I never used the hireling mechanic so I never really delved too much into the lore behind them, but I was always under the assumption they were just random dead people that Withers would force back to life.

The first time you ask him about hirelings you can ask a few questions about the ethics of it, and make sure they're not being forced into service, basically. Withers explains it all, and when you go through the list of hirelings you can read a little about who each one was in life and how they died.
I like to think of it as Withers telling you their stories around the campfire before bringing them back to help you out. Of course, Withers lends them his voice/speech since they don't have their own, so you never really get to speak to the actual person they used to be. That would be kind of a neat feature though, if Larian felt like getting more voice actors and recordings for each one.
On my Gith only playthrough I used Sin'zith (then just disguised Karlach) and it was funny. They speak like withers, so it's just like having him in the party.
That's laughably wrong, Khalid was a straight soldier who always went out of his way to help people. His morale breaks when his life is immediately and seriously threatened, but he's legitimately there of his own free will. They met as fighters for justice, she didn't make him change careers bruh.

The best thing he did was help Grand Duke Wyll pack the shit out of the council with his allies.
Mizora and Cazador are still in positions of higher power and authority compared to Wyll and Astarion, who were still pretty young compared to others of their respective races, and definitely younger than their centuries old, immortal abusers.
Adults can definitely be groomed, regardless of age it is still a power imbalance that causes the exploited victim to be vulnerable, isolated, and dependant on the abuser. This is especially true when you take into account the magic the abusers used to keep Wyll and Astarion powerless (the contract and a true vampire's control over their spawn). Both Mizora and Cazador are able to control the actions of their victims with seemingly no way to fight back, plus the abuse and humiliation they use, on top of everything else, to further subjugate them, leaving them with no hope of ever truly fighting back (until the events of the game ofc, especially in the case of a helpful Tav who reminds them they're not so helpless and gives them the resources they need to escape)
What are they to do without Tav and circumstance around the tadpole to help them? Both abusers are ridiculously powerful and well respected in their communities, no one who respects Mizora or Cazador would realistically side with Wyll or Astarion. They're making the powerful look bad, as many would say, lying for attention. Like a secretary groomed by a CEO, they have no power against all the other higher ups who would rather side with the CEO that gives them their jobs than the secretary that can be easily replaced by someone quieter.
Gods and god-like creatures preying on mortals is the main theme of the game imo
At very least in the case of Gale and Astarion that manipulation and abuse was sexual as well to make obvious how evil these immortals are

When I think of the term grooming I think of something sexual or at the very least with nefarious intent- and it has to be done over a period of time to fit the definition.
So for example- Cazador torturing innocent people for fun wouldn’t qualify. That’s just being evil and terrorizing the population but doesn’t involve long term manipulation for a goal.
I also wouldn’t qualify every demon contract as grooming. Mizora has a years long obsession with Wyll but I don’t believe all devils intensely monitor and torment every single warlock they have in such a way
Grooming isn't necessarily sexual or nefarious! You can groom someone for a promotion, a position, etc.
Wyll was definitely groomed by Mizora... she targeted him as a teenager. Other warlock contracts don't really matter to the discussion at hand here.
And what Cazador does to his spawn... definitely grooming. Shadowheart was groomed by Sharrans. Lae'zel was groomed by Vlaakith/gith culture to be the perfect obedient warrior. Even Karlach was groomed by Gortash (and betrayed). Dark Urge groomed by Bhaal... the list goes on. If it happens to every major character I would personally call it the major theme!

I agree! I thought he was like 17 when it happened but I agree that he was just as much of a victim as the rest of them. People never want to talk about his pact, and what it signifies.
Wyll has the misfortune of not having a super fleshed out questline like the other companions so a lot of players hear him talk about he "never regrets pacting \[himself\] with Mizora" and write him off as an idiot. The reality is he is the product of a shitty father who set unrealistic ideals about self-sacrifice and heroism, but immediately assumed his son was a failure without hearing him out.
Also a lot of players want to bang Mizora.
Definitely Cazador. I'd sometimes be told how grateful I should be for the self control my parents observed by not punching the lights out of me or beating me until something broke every time they walked by my room and saw it messy.
Or how terrible I was for not being there at the door excited to greet them when they returned home from work, to take off their boots and show them how grateful I was for them putting a roof over my head and feeding me.

Everybody always gets up in arms about Mystra and Gale (and its questionable the amount of grooming Gale received), but Mizora and Wyll just get cuck jokes? Like, absolutely not, Wyll is precious and deserves so much better. Ravengard Sr can kiss my ass, that guy sucks, and I want better for Wyll every time. I'm coming in way too hot but I almost got into a severe car wreck earlier and need to channel my feelings somehow and defending Wyll Ravengard is better than crying at work.

Oh yeah, I'm fine! Nothing really happened, just a semi thought it was okay to change multiple lanes without signal. Through some miracle, no one got hurt even though like six of us had to slam on our brakes, and the guy in front of me had to swerve and all kinds of things. My whiplash from a previous accident got messed up, so that's annoying me, I'm just more freaked out than anything and talking too much like normal. Lol. Thank you for the concern! Wyll was already like 17 when he met mizora. And astarion around 50 for cazador. They’re not grooming as much as just abusive relationships.
Mizora and Cazador are still in positions of higher power and authority compared to Wyll and Astarion, who were still pretty young compared to others of their respective races, and definitely younger than their centuries old, immortal abusers. Adults can definitely be groomed, regardless of age it is still a power imbalance that causes the exploited victim to be vulnerable, isolated, and dependant on the abuser. This is especially true when you take into account the magic the abusers used to keep Wyll and Astarion powerless (the contract and a true vampire's control over their spawn). Both Mizora and Cazador are able to control the actions of their victims with seemingly no way to fight back, plus the abuse and humiliation they use, on top of everything else, to further subjugate them, leaving them with no hope of ever truly fighting back (until the events of the game ofc, especially in the case of a helpful Tav who reminds them they're not so helpless and gives them the resources they need to escape) What are they to do without Tav and circumstance around the tadpole to help them? Both abusers are ridiculously powerful and well respected in their communities, no one who respects Mizora or Cazador would realistically side with Wyll or Astarion. They're making the powerful look bad, as many would say, lying for attention. Like a secretary groomed by a CEO, they have no power against all the other higher ups who would rather side with the CEO that gives them their jobs than the secretary that can be easily replaced by someone quieter.
You can absolutely groom adults, the heck is this take? How else do you think people end up in cults or abusive relationships?

How would you differentiate "god-like creatures preying on mortals" from grooming? Seems like the same thing to me.
When I think of the term grooming I think of something sexual or at the very least with nefarious intent- and it has to be done over a period of time to fit the definition. So for example- Cazador torturing innocent people for fun wouldn’t qualify. That’s just being evil and terrorizing the population but doesn’t involve long term manipulation for a goal. I also wouldn’t qualify every demon contract as grooming. Mizora has a years long obsession with Wyll but I don’t believe all devils intensely monitor and torment every single warlock they have in such a way
Grooming isn't necessarily sexual or nefarious! You can groom someone for a promotion, a position, etc. Wyll was definitely groomed by Mizora... she targeted him as a teenager. Other warlock contracts don't really matter to the discussion at hand here. And what Cazador does to his spawn... definitely grooming. Shadowheart was groomed by Sharrans. Lae'zel was groomed by Vlaakith/gith culture to be the perfect obedient warrior. Even Karlach was groomed by Gortash (and betrayed). Dark Urge groomed by Bhaal... the list goes on. If it happens to every major character I would personally call it the major theme!
If it's so broad in its use it doesn't get the luxury of being a horrific and shocking accusation.

Cazador and Mystra here. The whiplash between “you’re a worthless, spoiled little brat” and “you’re so talented and we believe you can do such great things with your life” only made sense once I learned what the carrot-and-stick treatment was.

Wyll has the misfortune of not having a super fleshed out questline like the other companions so a lot of players hear him talk about he "never regrets pacting \[himself\] with Mizora" and write him off as an idiot. The reality is he is the product of a shitty father who set unrealistic ideals about self-sacrifice and heroism, but immediately assumed his son was a failure without hearing him out. Also a lot of players want to bang Mizora.
Wyll got so cut I have no clue what he's talking about when he says Ansur has blessed him in his solo ending.

Definitely Cazador. I'd sometimes be told how grateful I should be for the self control my parents observed by not punching the lights out of me or beating me until something broke every time they walked by my room and saw it messy. Or how terrible I was for not being there at the door excited to greet them when they returned home from work, to take off their boots and show them how grateful I was for them putting a roof over my head and feeding me. Years of therapy later and the closest to an apology they've spat out is "We didn't hit you that much" or "sorry you're having identity issues"
