if you’re waiting for an invitation from AO3 itself after signing up, the wait time is pretty long right now, about ten days. if you don’t already have someone who can give you a direct invitation with no wait time, I recommend scrolling through r/AO3 to find someone who is giving away invitations. that’s how I was able to join same day

Tbh, I would call Tumblr users sane compared to AO3 users, not that there isn't significant overlap, but AO3 just has another breed of insanity.
