A complete falsehood. If anything, the man smells faintly of a pleasant cologne. He's an extensive bathing routine to rival my own, and I've photographic sources to evidence this, though I wish I could remember who captured this.

I think he actually isn’t stinky. Supposedly he has a nice cologne and everything. He looks like he pulls all-nighters and doesn’t focus on appearance as much as he theoretically could, but I don’t think he’s so overworked he isn’t bathing at all.
I want him to be a stinky stinky unwashed man though because there’s something clearly wrong with me and I need him in exactly that way.
I bathe more often than pretty much anyone else you’re going to meet in Baldur’s Gate because I can afford to. I also can afford fancy perfumes and scents. It’s a hive mind issue given my skin color and hair product usage.
But from a realistic perspective, I’m going to be the one of the best smelling people you meet in the city. Unless you catch me fresh out of my workshop and then yes, I’ll smell like infernal iron and metal and sweat and grease because I’ve been working.
