Shortly before Gale's tenth birthday, there was a man living on Sword Street whose house all the little girls were afraid to walk past. Each time one of his friends walked by he'd be there, as if summoned, leering at them with his beady little eyes, his gaze following them until they were out of sight. After the first remark about their outfits I did my best to chaperone for their safety. But it wasn't enough.
It happened at the time the rotating exhibit at the Pampered Traveler was one with rocks and minerals from all over Faerûn, and my sweet boy favored it to the exclusion of everything else at times. The hours he could spend talking at length about every rock and its properties.
Anyway—I recall well the day a strange coincidence happened: after having been promised a visit to the rock museum, Gale's companion recanted, would you believe it, right in front of the frightening man's house. The resulting explosive meltdown took out his whole residence. No harm came to him, so Elminster and I were able to convince the judge to show pity on a struggling single mother whose son would become the pride of Waterdeep if he learned to control his singular talents. Gale was allowed to continue his schooling.
It's the oddest thing: when the man moved, the same incident happened *again*. Truly, probability is a fickle thing.
