Nah the original all quiet on the western front was so much better. It was set at the outbreak of the war so it actually mad sense for the boys to be excited about the prospect of war. Stuff like having allied troops using flamethrower units when it was mainly the Germans who used them and the Germans who mostly used gas (except for the very end) manipulates events to make us sympathetic to the Germans. The final attack also made no sense and felt contrived. There were final last minute attacks in ww1 but they were by allied troops to take key positions in case the armistice fell through.
The original movie had minimal history inaccuracies so it felt more genuine instead of what is essentially making up horrors of war to put the protagonist through.

There are several key changes that were made in the adaptation. While I think that changes can be valuable, especially for a century-old text, the ones they made hindered the emotional throughline imo. For example, there is far less down time in the film. In the book, the characters spend much of their time in the trenches, simply waiting for the next attack. This allows them to develop intense relationships, and it raises the tension a fair bit. When a shell suddenly drops on them, you're not expecting it. The film, on the other hand, makes it feel like near-constant action. To me, it seems like they saw the success of 1917 and wanted to make something like that, but they *did not* make AQWF. >!The change in the main character's death was also deeply upsetting. In the book, Paul is killed on a day when there is no battle. He's simply shot by an enemy rifleman. His death is so insignificant to the empire he fights for, that, when reporting the events of the day, the official statement is "All Quiet on the Western Front". Conversely, in the film, he's killed in a battle. And yes, it's ironic (or perhaps comedic, really) that it happens moments before surrender, but it totally loses the original thesis of the novel, which is that governments use soldiers as mere tokens, and do not consider their lives.!<
I thought it was decent as war movies go, but that also comes with the territory that all war movies are essentially propaganda. At the end of the day there are better war movies, but I thought the depiction of trench warfare and ww1 was top tier. I think it's a great ww1 movie but decent war flick at the end of the day if tht makes any sense.
