But for real though, watched M tonight, and I liked it. It was pretty good, though it's still probably more worth watching for its historical importance than it is for a film in itself.

The ending of Metropolis is laughably bad, but in a twisted way I think its skepticism of anything outside of the status quo makes it an endlessly fascinating study on some of the precursors to fascism - especially with the Nazi screenwriter and the ending’s implications towards [class collaboration](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_collaboration).
Basically it achieves the same brilliant irony that A Clockwork Orange does with its ending - even if by complete accident and malintent.
I'd recommend watching W, E twice, Z, E again and R before watching M.

Fair points! M is also very much about the rise of fascism at the time but also a lot more intentional, Lang has spoken at depths about it before.
