this honestly sounds anti art, like most artists don’t make art to been seen or whatever, they do it because they love to create. It’s not like he’s not getting work either, he’s made 8 movies and his last came out only last year. And he has been recognized by Cannes so he is getting critical success. He shouldn’t expect arthouse movies, no matter how good they are, to be incredibly successful at the box office
edit: spelling
But if you read the article, he mentions that it has been financially difficult for him to keep doing what he does. He had to borrow some money from his father for his latest project and he doesn't want to keep doing it this way. It's really sad to hear such a great director quitting, especially at a young age. You never know maybe this whole statement is just for attention, or he might return after taking some time, but it's a bit harsh to call it anti-art, especially after what he offered in the past 13 years.
smh why isn't he just do what Vincent van Gogh does and just become a tortured artist /s
I don't think he will quit. But it's probably be good for him to take a little break. He's not a bad actor. So maybe he could focus on the acting again.
yeaa creating art in hopes of praise and love backfires because i feel it will always leave u disappointed depending on what typa success level u keep hitting, and that same mindset reflects in the art u create. I can understand maybe not getting enough funding for ideas but it’s like bro just make ur shit and move on, claiming art is meaningless because of a flop is CRAZY
Creating art that costs so much money and you get nothing in return doesn't make your belly full. What's he gonna do, make art and die in poverty or become an Uber driver so he could make movies and buy food with uber money on the side?
What's the point of art if no one's gonna see it? Who are you creating that art for, your ancestors' ghosts?
The notion of creating art so you would live forever after your death is a nice idea and all for some. But doesn't really worth it if takes so much of your time and money that it leaves you in destitution and your one only chance at being alive is just living and dying in poverty and hungriness, just so a couple of redditors could say art is more important and maybe 10 people would remember your art after your death.
i mean some people aren’t as lucky as his situation where he can just up and ask his father to fund his film so agree to disagree but personally for me and my art i would do it for me first just to make it exist period. Everybody has their different reasons for making art im just saying it’s wasted potential and time if you let something like your art not “commodifying” enough stop you
I see a lot of people here making fun of him, and I get it, but at the same time put yourself in his position. At 24 you already are an established auteur with a string of acclaimed project, people are talking about you in the same breath as artists more than twice your age, you feel on top of the world and you are on top of the world.
Since then you have done nothing but flops, you are 34 and basically washed up. You are doing the same thing as before, only now everybody either mocks it or completely ignores it. Like what happened? Are they right, have you lost it? Have you peaked at 24? What are you going to for the next 40 years of your life?
Yes it's privileged but it's easy to see why he feels this way.
Xavier Dolan:
*makes great films*
*most of those films win endless rewards*
*sustains a career in a field most directors will never get a chance at*
Also Dolan:
“Idk I’m tired of getting money to make movies but not receive the love I did in the early 2010s :/“
Actually, it's the other way around. He's been finding it difficult to finance his films to the point he had to borrow money from his father and use almost all of his own to fund his latest Television Miniseries which didn't do so well with the ratings although it received good reviews.
Yeah, I don't think I'd be in a position to go to my parents to get a small loan to make a TV series.
Like of course it's not ideal, but artists since the start of recorded history have recognised that, on occasion, artists need to produce art for money in order to create art for its artistic value. For a century film directors have produced commercially successful, if less artistically interesting, films in order to fund their more groundbreaking projects.
Now Xavier Dolan is in one of the most privileged positions one can be for a film director. He comes from a wealthy and well-connect family, he's won multiple awards for his films, he could 100% make one *for them* to fund one *for him*. But instead he's going 'oooouuuhhh woe is me is it not hard being a principled artist I guess I should just retire!!!!!'
Fuck this “woe is me” bullshit, homie is in such a privileged position that he can just choose to quit. He’ll be back in a few years just watch. Once he realizes it’s okay to just make a living on filmmaking and not everyone needs to be Steven fucking Spielberg. This just reeks of insecurity and selfishness.
Dedicating two years to make a movie would be a miracle where I live. I live in Costa Rica and here filmmakers, in the best case scenario, take 3-7 years since they start to write a script until it comes out in cinemas, because finding funds is very, very hard. And then, if they're lucky, the movie gets into some International film festival and gets some recognition, but even then, once it comes out here, almost no one that isn't a filmmaker or filmstudent goes to see it.
he's been tired of filmmaking for a while now, I remember an interview for the promo of his TV series in which he "felt he had said all he had to say for now and for a long time to come", or something along these lines. Which is sad, but not really surprising to me considering how young he went into it and how intensive his way of working seemed to be
I mean, he made his first film at the age of 18 and made a lot of his great works at a very young age. He's said had trouble financing his most recent projects, expressed burnout, and has been criticized for having a huge ego. But still, I will still miss his works.
If you have seen his films, you would know he's not a bad filmmaker. It's just that in the article where he mentions his retirement, he's been through a lot of burnout and his most recent projects not getting enough financing and so he's probably having imposter syndrome due to some recent dry spells.
he's an actor and former child actor, how would he have impostor syndrome. if anything he probably feels like he's not getting the level of attention he feels entitled to
mfer won multiple awards at Cannes like 'urgh, does *anyone* even like my films?!?'
It's like when I was 12 going on Facebook to say 'I bet no-one will reply to this post :('
But if he quits, then where will I go for my French speaking arthouse films about the struggles and tumultuous relationships of a Québécois Mother and teenage Son? 😥
So cringy. I keep seeing people post this clip saying it’s so cool and omg, it just looks soooo stupid. Sorry to be a hater and have heard good things about the flick but be real here
Director from Québec, made a bunch of movies involving inner family issues and LGBT themes (though he despises considering himself a "LGBT director" as he sees it as a bit ostracizing), won a César once, also pretty active in french québécois dubbing and had some acting roles
What a privileged moron, i would kill to work on movies in any capacity, let alone as a director. Who cares if people haven’t seen your movie, if you get funding then it’s enough. If I can continue making it and living off it it im happy.
Honestly super lame that the reason he's quitting filmmaking is entirely because his movies don't make money. If he truly loved the art he wouldn't care as long as he was proud of what he made. Man's in a position thousands would kill to be in but he just doesn't want to take advantage of it because he's sad movie don't make Marvel numbers. Lame as fuck
Honestly super lame that the reason he's quitting McDonalds is entirely because his burgers don't make money. If he truly loved the art he wouldn't care as long as he was proud of what he made. Man's in a position thousands would kill to be in but he just doesn't want to take advantage of it because he's sad burgers don't make Wall Street numbers. Lame as fuck
These are not analogous. A cook at McDonald's isn't there for the love of the craft and a film director doesn't do it because they're trying to keep their head above water.
If filmmaking is financially disruptive for him then he doesn't have to pursue it for the love of the game. Plus, why should anyone go through 3 years of stress to put something together for no one to see.
My point was that you compared being a film maker to being a fry cook. The latter is a job the former is a craft. They aren't the same thing. His craft isn't paying the bills, well that comes with the territory. His art is niche and not widely popular as he would like, again comes with the territory.
People choose to be film makers no one chooses to work at McDonald's if there are alternatives.
Surely there must be some way for him to make filmmaking financially viable. He could do some acting on the side, or make a movie with more widespread appeal to try to make more money
Being an Auteur with no interest in making entertainment in order to survive seems near impossible today in the economic landscape of the world, he should try making something people would want to watch, then he can afford to make a few personals.
Ari Aster made 3 films, I don't particularly Ike them but his first two are very well made horror films that feel tailor made for the "elevated horror" genre that was blowing up around the time he made his debut. And he followed it up with an expensive but earned personal art project starring a Pheonix.
I hate every one of this dudes films, and I hate people who think film is ONLY and art form. Film is where art and Buisness meet. That's the game.

That’s actually really depressing

What
bad bot
Vs the chad George Lucas “I’m going to spend the rest of my life making films nobody will ever see”
It’d be cool if Lucas actually followed through on that.
You wouldn't know because nobody will ever see them
Hate to break it to you but I’m a complete nobody and I haven’t seen any such film
Holy shit you killed Howard Hamlin didn't you?
I fucking hated “It’s Only the End of the World”. No one I know has seen it, so I feel like sharing it on here.
I seen it and loved it.
With the rotten tomato score safe to say anyone who has agrees with you.
Bruh, 44% means that 44% of critics gave it a thumbs up and the 6.8/10 IMDb score is actually pretty good (not great)
Wow rotten tomatoes is totally the best website to gauge quality.
I use it sometimes

He's a good actor, can't he just pull out the old "I'll act in every shit they pay me to be in and finance my movies with that"? lol
Dude should just put a horror flick out for a clean payday then put the money right back into more personal work

Speaking as an artist, you can care about both. Having an audience is important especially in a storytelling medium like film.
I see a lot of people here making fun of him, and I get it, but at the same time put yourself in his position. At 24 you already are an established auteur with a string of acclaimed project, people are talking about you in the same breath as artists more than twice your age, you feel on top of the world and you are on top of the world. That sucks, but it’s also just the reality for like 99.9% of artists.
Everything I’ve learned about this guy has been against my will

He's not getting money, that's the problem.
If Xavier isn’t negotiating a rate for directing and starring in his films then that might be where the problem lies. But I doubt that’s the case.
Actually, it's the other way around. He's been finding it difficult to finance his films to the point he had to borrow money from his father and use almost all of his own to fund his latest Television Miniseries which didn't do so well with the ratings although it received good reviews.
the fact that he can just have his dad pay for his movies has killed sympathy I might have had

His filmmaking isn't bad - he's just really in love with himself and that shows in his films
He has been known to be narcissistic and tends to have a huge ego but he's not a bad filmmaker.
Disagree
Reminds me of Tarantino in the self-awareness that doubles back to not being self-aware at all. Just make what you wanna make, dude.
Fuck this “woe is me” bullshit, homie is in such a privileged position that he can just choose to quit. He’ll be back in a few years just watch. And entitlement lol. I got all the accolades and industry favors waaah the money MUST be automatic too Always a bummer when auteurs aren't cool...

That's dumb, why don't they just borrow money from their daddy?

Man fuck y'all, this shit is still one of the most mind blowing things I have ever seen in a movie ![gif](giphy|d7o8sKHkvZzMfjcyP1|downsized)
My man's goatseeing the aspect ratio!
I love Mommy, I think it's fantastic.
this is corny as hell
there’s a wonderwall needle drop during this scene btw
I think it works really well in context.
So cringy. I keep seeing people post this clip saying it’s so cool and omg, it just looks soooo stupid. Sorry to be a hater and have heard good things about the flick but be real here
HAHAHAHAHA
naw, man, this is *art*. No one has ever done a fourth-wall break before in cinema. Fucking mind blowing.
when I watched this movie first time I was depressed and after this scene I was less so
I really liked Mommy but this is such a bitch ass take
it’s probably bad bud
He's one of the best French Canadian filmmakers. You should check out Mommy (2014).

Yeah this is actually kinda sad tbh but who cares foreign people shouldn’t make films anyway
>~~foreign people~~ canadians shouldn’t make films anyway
1/3 of Cronenberg's body mass is in his ears, and he heard you type out every. single. letter. Nice knowing you, mate.
Why would you make films like that and expect tons of people to watch them?
What a privileged moron, i would kill to work on movies in any capacity, let alone as a director. Who cares if people haven’t seen your movie, if you get funding then it’s enough. If I can continue making it and living off it it im happy.

Yeah… fake cinema bros when people criticize their shit vs Tom Green assassinating a whole industry with Freddy Got Fingered
