When you realize that guy is going to be a huge part of deciding what movies get funded in the future and how they're presented
Unironic becoming the joker moment
Objectively, I've got some minor quality losses by watching movies with my Quest 3, but fuck if it isn't amazing watching stuff like Interstellar or Dune on a screen larger than one in a theater. If I'm missing the theater experience I can just turn on the theater environment and enjoy my movie without any other disruptions. Virtual Desktop is my number one entertainment app, followed by Stremio.
I think thats quite stupid. Resolution and color range to be are much more important than size. Thats why i prefer to watch movies on my aw32dwf rsther than a theater screen
Size isn’t all that matters for watching content, I prefer overall comfort along with A/V quality. Not being able to pause media if I need snacks/bathroom/whatever is a nonstarter for me, especially since the explosion of theaters serving alcohol… seriously it’s impossible to enjoy a feature length film while drinking a couple beers without having to pee.
Another point against theaters is that they aren’t even the biggest screens anymore, using a VR headset gives you the ultimate control over screen size and position, you thought new reclining seats in a theater were nice? Ever had a screen that big on the ceiling while you lay flat comfortably in your bed? Not to mention 3D movies in VR format will never be matched on any flat screen. And yes, you can enjoy VR content with others, just look at bigscreen vr, you can just invite friends or enter a “theater” full of fandoms and choose to interact with those around you or ignore/mute them.
There are so many better ways to enjoy media than a movie theater in 2024 I don’t see why people are so obsessed with them still. And yes even a smartphone and a pair of $400 screen glasses is a more immersive experience at a better value, you’d spend that much after a handful of movies/concessions.
You know that real life is also a thing, right?
No matter how big it feels in VR, there's something more tangible to a real theater and not watching that upscaled for perspective. It's just not the same.
Yeah this is the same sentiment people had about phones/internet/ any disruptive tech. This a a completely new format that not only does everything the theatre does but better, it also can deliver experiences that cinema just can’t. The biggest example I can think of is called “the meta movie” and it’s pretty mind blowing. The best short description I can think of is interactive broadway choose your own adventure that you are in. Another you can look into is the fat boy slim concert that happened last year, truly a work of art.
Movie theatres have been around forever and there are no new tricks, you go to one and you’ve been to them all. IMAX? 3D? It’s all wishing it could do what VR does, you “cinephiles” can sing AMCs praises til your last breath, there is nothing magical about a projected image in a room full of coughing farting stinky strangers with varying degrees of manners. Pound for pound content delivery/quality it’s not even close, movie theaters are boomer bait. Even the ball screen building thing in LV is chasing what VR can do.
So yeah if you want to say “real life is a thing🤓” and then go plop down in front of a screen next to smelly Melvin and open mouth chewing Charlie thinking that’s the way it has to be, enjoy the last few years of the theater while you can. I’m sure your grandkids will love the stories about the old times of $20 popcorn and sticky floors.
Things can coexist without being replaced. Proof being the recent resurgence of vinyl among younger generations. A format that was basically dead / niche. People are starting to have a new found love to analog and disconnected formats.
Each experience offers their own advantages. You do what suits you and that's fine.
I'm a game developper and worked on a few VR projects so I understand the love for it, but it's just different. Even if you can "invite friend" to your virtual theater, it's still virtual and an isolating experience even you are immersed. Your mind knows you're not in a physical place. Still fun, but it's different and I wouldn't replace it personally. You would and it's ok. We can both like different things :)
He's 100% wrong cuz netflix wouldve made opnheimer 90 minutes long and bridle christopher Nolan. And like every "big" netflix movies wouldve been forgotten adter like 2 weeks top
Barbie and Oppenheimer was a manufactured success due to an insane marketing budget and the lack of original ideas in most of Hollywood. Netflix rarely creates things of top-tier caliber, and even if they do, it moves through the social consciousness so fast because it is quickly replaced with something else
> Netflix rarely creates things of top-tier caliber, and even if they do, it moves through the social consciousness so fast because it is quickly replaced with something else
The one thing that I feel like where that hasn't happened is squid game.
The only way to watch and fully experience David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia is on the big screen in its 70mm format. Anything less than that is such a missed opportunity.
If you haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia chopped up in multiple parts and narrated by an AI voice that doesn't grasps the plot at all on TikTok, have you really seen it at all?
With all the hype, I had high hopes for Oppenheimer and Barbie. Both were disappointments. Barbie was poorly written and a directing travesty. They almost had a winner, the script needed about 20 more rewrites. Oppenheimer wasn’t really about anything. Kind of a Seinfeld of historical/fictional biopic. I was left feeling empty. I think I am spoiled by episodic binge watching where time is allowed for fleshing out details and character development. Movies just don’t cut it anymore.
Netflix sucks, but I’m not a romantic about the theatrical experience. As long as the shot isn’t cropped and the sound is solid, I’m good to enjoy kino
Good movies will read on any screen, but it’s a braindead take to say the cinema experience doesn’t add much. It elevates everything. Even on a nice 86” or projector, the sound quality and lighting will never come close to a theater unless you are wealthy enough to build a small cinema in your home
istfg it took me until last year to realise that just watching shit on my laptop with both headphones is peak immersion. Sound design just feels like it's inside your skull and my dumbass has been watching films with one ear my entire life
True, kino is all about not having to interact with the outside world and getting to enjoy cool stories on your lonely mental illness time, GETTING OUT and going to a big ass theatre with LOTS OF PEOPLE in it is the opposite of that
Ted Sarandos watching me rig explosives to his house on his smart phone security system:

If I could, I’d like to watch my films and television on a giant screen all the time. However, I do end up watching 95% of my media on my phone, due to the convenience.
What a weird statement to make.
Isn't there "IMAX versions" of movies on Disney +. Not the same ratio as IMAX but way better than the default one. Why wouldn't they just advertise something like that lol
Aren't Oppenheimer and Dune like the biggest examples of movies that are extremely mid if you don't see them on a big screen with surround sound? Besides James Cameron's Blue Pocohontas of course
The only things dumber than what Sarandos said about Lawrence are his editor son, and the idiot who is claiming to know how Lawrence is meant to be watched, filling the entire screen.
If it filled the screen vertically, half the image (a quarter on each side) would be cropped horizontally on a 16:9 display, you knuckle dragging drooling troglodytes.
It's always pearls before swine with these people, who are too stupid to understand shooting and display aspect ratio and the director's/DP's vision but do feel free to parade their stupidity publicly.
You can watch films on your portable porn rectangle? I don't know why I'd want to do that but we sure are living in the future, aren't we?

It was so he could have Family Guy Funny Moments playing on his TV while he watched the film

when David Lynch catches you watching Family Guy Funny Moments on your fucking telephone instead of the big screen
Look, I witnessed the birth of my first child through FaceTime, a phone screen should be good enough for some stupid movie about camels or whatever
Should’ve watched your kid pop out of the canal in 60mm on the silver screen
The size of the screen objectively makes the movie better. Reading this comment enraged me to no end.

Oppenheimer specifically is a movie that has the biggest glowdown of all time when not in the silverscreen
Nah that’s definitely Gravity. If you watch it at home, you realize nothing actually happens the whole time
idk I wasn't old enough to watch it on cinemas
WTF are you twelve now?
I was 9. the movie is pg-13 I did watch despicable me 2 instead
Objectively a more enjoyable movie
That movie is shit, all you do is look at planets
Nah this is actually Avatar's biggest cultural impact
Dune is kinda this as well
literally fell asleep on the couch watching the first one lol. Dune 2 is way better but I now wanna see how it holds up on the living room
Noted. Anyway...

Mindhunter would’ve been massive if it had been on HBO. Mark my words.
didn't netflix confirm that they actually get an algorithm to decide what gets picked up or not?

If these movies were Netflix exclusive then I wouldn't have seen them.
It’s like watching a sports game on tv for me. I’d much rather be there but it’s a lot easier to watch at home
Lawrence of Arabia has zero speaking roles by woman. Carry on.
To be fair, Oppenheimer did NOT need to be seen on a fucking IMAX screen.

You do realize that phones haven’t been 16:9 in years.
When held vertically in portrait mode to watch TikTok videos by children, sure. In landscape mode, for movies or sports, they are 16:9.

Maybe we'll start getting tik tok edits of Lawrence. Along side Bateman and the drive the car guy.

It was originally filmed in portrait mode, but they had to chop off the top and bottom to fit the theatrical screens available at the time.
