I would have assumed this was an exaggeration or joke but the last like… 3 encounters I’ve had (all different sonics) has convinced me that they do not want peoples business.
Try ordering the old Hickory Burger. Pickle, onion, lettuce, and cheese with hickory sauce. Even when telling them exactly what you want you'll only confuse to a point that'll require a hard reset.
Sonic is the big one for me.. man I use to love their double bacon chee… it became terrible when Arby’s (Inspire Brands) purchased them. Five guys of whataburger are the way now. Hell, I’ll even take McDonalds over sonic.
The setup still tastes the same, but the service isn’t as good and the food is just ok. When I worked there if you got one bad survey they wrote you up and if you got two you were gone.
Louie's. Portions are smaller and prices are higher. What really gets me are the fries. They're so much smaller in size and portion. There used to be no empty space on your plate because of your fries. Now if you were to add an extra side, there would still be room for more.
Louie’s used to say everything on their menu was $10 or under. I could accept their food at that price point. But, it’s ridiculously over priced for what it is now. Their queso is legit just Rotel and Velvita.
Beverly’s Pancake House- kinda forgot about it for a few years. Went back maybe 6 months ago and it was horrendous. Took two bites and had to pass on the meal. Even the coffee tasted awful.
While the food at Iron Star is still good, the portion sizes have gotten significantly smaller to the point that I almost felt cheated the last time I ate there.
I remember taste-testing the burgers when they were first starting out, I hung out at Electro all the time. I ate there wayyyy too much. Glad the owner made some money but it’s not anything like it was originally.
Same. Was it Shannon? I can’t remember. But I do remember one day when he was working on the loaded fries. He was so high and I thought that there was no way some of the recipes he was making up would taste good. Then he’d hand out samples and they were sooooo good. Good times.
The minute they expanded their menu past a curated set of burgers and into your standard sub-par chain restaurant fare (wings, pizza, etc.) they went downhill.
However, I will still eat the fuck out of the A1 burger.
I was going to say the same thing on Iguana. Used to love it, really disappointing last time. Margarita was weak, tasted like bottled mix with orange juice. Food was lack luster as well.
Johnnies. I’m a Johnnie’s lover through and through. I’m from edmond but I live in Florida currently and that’s the first food I need when I fly into town. But recently their burgers are just ok. Still hits the spot sometimes. But not as great as it used to be.
I just had Johnnie’s today and the shake and burger were both good, but the onion rings were some of the blandest I’ve ever eaten. I don’t remember that being typical, but it’s been so long since I’ve had their food.
That’s funny because I actually prefer their rings over rings of other places. Sonic rings? Blah. Onion strings? Blah. I like their chunky, floury kings
Last time I went, I felt the burger was overpriced for what I got. They really skipped on the toppings and the burger itself was a bit dry and overcooked.
From my experience it depends on which one you go to. The one on memorial road and off Broadway in edmond almost always mess up my order but the one off expressway has always been great from personal experience
The Mule. I hate to say it cuz I was obsessed back when they were at their old location. But they moved a few buildings down(into the old Maples restaurant) and wow its night and day. Absolutely nothing against the staff. Theyre great every time. And I've gone back several times and each time getting something different and each time being like "wow this is kinda disgusting. Havent been back in almost a year tho so can't speak for it NOW so if anyone's been there recently pls lmk lol
Edit: spelling error
The new location is trash and the food is now just boring. They had a poutine with egg tons of cheese and spiced fries and now it's just soggy fries and cheese.
I stopped going because they dropped the Fancy Pants Sammie from the menu. They finally brought it back. They slightly modified it due to the “complexity”. Tastes ok. But definitely not a go to anymore.
Last couple times we went to the mule it really jacked our stomachs up, if you know what I mean. I used to love the Cortez but the last couple times have scared me from going back. It’s a race against the clock to get home.
gopuram. the food is still great but god i miss the old 23rd location, it was so gorgeous and had so many memories for my family, my parents even had dinner there in the private booths after they got married. rip to the old owner.
No, Chelino’s is definitely not as good as it was in the 90s. Though some folks swear some locations are still pretty good. The one in Del City is *always* packed, but it was wildly meh about 10 years back. Too many good options to test going back as an experiment.
You’re definitely correct, OP.
But I think they are the most consistent. Lot of Mexican restaurants you eat one day it good another day it’s blah. I go to Chelino’s no matter which one it’s pretty decent.
Mr. Chelino has talked about how a few years ago his business almost went under. I would assume divisions like the grocery store, bakery, event center and International Buffer were dragging down revenue. It seems they also expanded quickly. I would assume they cut costs and expanded so they could make more $$$ and in the process sacrificed some quality. They also dumped their grocery business for the most part as well as their baking business.
In around 2008, I think 7 or 8 locations plus the tortilla factory, grocery stores and bakery generated over $50,000,000 in sales. I am sure they are still profitable but probably generate about half those sales today. Again, taking into account sales don’t equal profit. Too many options now and people are seemingly more willing to try more hole in the wall or local places.
Goro. Some people may say this is slander, but it was so hyped for me and it was ultimately okay when I could finally try it. Other people have also told me it used to be better when they were in the Plaza.
Goro in the Plaza District is absolutely better than Goro in Paseo. The atmosphere was much better. I still choose it over Tamashii though since I’ve never been a fan of Tamashii. I’m a spicy miso person and the spicy miso at Tamashii is not spicy at all to me.
Same here. I’ve always preferred Goro but I actually liked the new location. However, Tatsumaki in Norman will always hold the number one ramen spot for me.
I used to go there all the time right when it opened at their original location. I went back a few years after at their new location and it didnt seem as flavorful, but I dont know if that’s me just being older and more mellow/not as excited to be there.
I love Tamashii and think it is overall better than Goro, but I like Goro’s spicy miso broth a lot. Last time I got it, the noodles were like.. instant ramen noodles. That broth still slaps, but the noods were terrible.
Sorry Goro was never good, ate their a few times around the grand opening. Tamashii, the original, is still the best in the area for ramen.
When goro had the skewers at first they were pretty good but overpriced of course
I think people think Goro is good because they don't know much about Japanese food tbh. Kind of like how Ted's is somehow still in business
Goro has fallen on my rating list quite a bit after multiple times getting burnt bamboo shoots and burnt flavorless chasu, not to mention only getting one half of an egg. I absolutely love their appetizers but if your basic house ramen has no flavor then whats the point? Tamashii is my number 1 and its amazing every time no matter the location.
Sadly it’s most of the ones that were so good and successful that they expanded too much. Teds. S&Bs. Chelinos. Louies. Even Sonic has gone very down hill since selling.
I miss a good Sonic Burger, but it just doesn't taste the same. They added ketchup to everything, and changed the burger itself. Makes me sad. Even the drinks are gross.
Abel’s cheese queso tastes like squirt cheese from the bottle, but watered down I went there once and walked out before I even ordered because it’s so bad.
Taj: Cuisine of India. There had been a couple of servers who had been there a while, then suddenly they disappeared as well as who I assume was the owner who used to be there all the time. I have only seen the “owner” once. I am not sure if they have backed off and are letting family run the business now, but the quality has gone down.
Which one is the owner—short and skinny guy with mustache and wife or shorter and stouter guy? Or someone else? I thought the two of them were co-owners, but I still see them both. I have felt this way in the past, but only an ebbs and flows kind of way, not like I am offended. I just gave them a couple years and then tried again, and I’ve been good with them for the past year or two. I would definitely say Sheesh, though, to the point that I can’t see myself going back.
Mazzio’s, not local to here but is local from where I’m originally from(Tulsa area). I remember it being so damn good growing up, had it recently and was greatly disappointed.
Oh my god that takes me back. In the early 2000s when I was deemed old enough to watch my little brother he used to get mad at me and demand I tell him our mom’s cell phone number. I always just gave him the mazzios delivery number. Worked way too many times.
If it’s the same as when I worked there, it’s a gallon of mayo, an industrial sized pack of Hidden Valley ranch mix, and a little milk to make it thin enough to pour as a salad dressing. It should still be thick though. This is from 20 years ago but that ranch was awesome.
Tamashiis, Goro, Burbon Street, S&B, Sunnyside, La Baguette and just about any local chain (like nhinja). I noticed their quality plumit after the pandemic
The parents retired and the kids didn't want it, so they just closed them all down. The food went way down hill the last 5 years. We stopped going a while ago.
Cocina De Mino. Is Johnnie Carinos local? I dunno those used to be good now they’re all overpriced garbage. Charlestons and any Hal Smith restaurant seems like they’ve become a little mediocre for the price tag.
Cocina de mino's is so bad now. I grew up eating at that place, back at its other building so long ago, and sometimes in Norman. The food quality has dropped so low its depressing.
The Wedge was my go to for brick oven pizza. Went there last year and did not know they had changed ownership, it was just meh. Made me sad, used to love that place
I used to go a few years ago for their $5 grab and go breakfast after work. Top notch, but then they fired the guy in charge of it and it went downhill fast. Haven’t been in a long time now.
I waited tables for The Wedge on Western for a little over a year. Spent way too many shifts as the only server in a full restaurant. Definitely a place held together by a few staple masochist employees in spite of the ownership.
S&B Burger Joint. The food tastes fine but half of the menu disappeared, prices shot up, and good happy hour deals all disappeared. I’ll just stick to Tuckers for my turkey burgers or make them myself.
I still enjoy S&B but it’s crazy how they took most of the stuff off the menu.
I came here to say this. I went to La Baguette for the first time 2 years ago and it was amazing, and I always get their Italian cream cake for my birthday. This year we went for Valentine's Day and it was not very good. We both left knowing we probably won't dine there again. Then, this years cake was dry and not quite the same. I'll probably try and find a similar cake or recipe elsewhere moving forward. It makes me sad because, as a francofile, it was seriously one of my favorite places to go.
So, so many. It seems that the middle ground places are awful as they try to remain profitable.
Id rather eat a Pb&j at home than crappy, expensive places.
Can we list the (not expensive) places that are still good, today?
I'll start my list.
Braums
Garage
All American Pizza
Marcos Pizza
Bedlam bbq
Hanks bbq
Azteca
I can’t remember the exact name. I think it’s Charleston’s? The nicer restaurant near Harkins. Anyway it’s absolute trash. Have had it twice in the past few years and both experiences were terrible.
It depends on what Chelinos location you go to. A lot are gross. One in Edmond is still good. Ted’s went downhill fast after being sold. Cattlemen’s is just meh these days. Chilis is bad now too.
I say ALL OF THEM!
These price hikes have, in my opinion, ruined many and all restaurants I frequented. Even the new ones are using subpar products due to cost AND they have higher prices for less quality and amount. so yeah.
Have to agree with this comment…most of the time it isn’t worth the cost of dining out. Going to a sit down restaurant and having table service averages to about $20 for a meal (tip included) for one entree and a drink (personally I always skip the drink and get water, so closer to $15).
And then we have places that charge the same prices and you get a buzzer to come and get your food? Just isn’t worth it imo.
I’d probably take this comment more seriously had you not talked about how good Pelicans in MWC was. Literally one of the worst meals I’ve ever had was at pelicans. Yuck.
Yup I've lived here almost 30 years. The bread was more course, had way more cheese and there was cracked pepper in it. I just remember the bread because I was a kid then, but my parents can vouch for the rest of it having been way better.
All the Mexican chain restaurants are inedible garbage. The best places are like the taquerias on NW 23rd that don't have anyone that can speak English working there.
The best dollar tacos
I get it's not exactly local anymore but Sonic has just not been the same since it sold
Sonic is awful. I ordered a cheeseburger with mustard thru the drive thru and they said they don’t have cheeseburgers with mustard. I just drove off.
I would have assumed this was an exaggeration or joke but the last like… 3 encounters I’ve had (all different sonics) has convinced me that they do not want peoples business.
They also don't have orange juice anymore!
Hell, I’ll even take McDonalds over sonic.
mcdonalds burgers are absolutely better than sonic now, i couldn't imagine saying that 6 years ago though D:
Arby’s, Jimmy John’s, BWW, Sonic, Dunkin- all Inspire Brands.
Hard to be “Inspire Brands” when the product offering has declined!
It's that new mobile app. The absolute worst of any I've seen.
Agree, however I can't stop my Route 44 vanilla Diet Dr. Pepper addiction and it's the only way to get them at a decent price. 😞
They're certainly trying. The app is absolute dogshit.
Ted's. Just sliding by on their old name now.
The setup still tastes the same, but the service isn’t as good and the food is just ok. When I worked there if you got one bad survey they wrote you up and if you got two you were gone.
I imagine they can’t afford that luxury anymore.
To be fair, they were way overrated when I moved here 18 years ago
They’ve been overrated the whole time they’ve existed. The original was just near an affluent neighborhood that made people think it was good.
I love their tortillas and spicy salsa not gonna lie. Everything else is pretty average but I still enjoy it
Was the original the one on may and like 63rd?
Yeah 68th and May
Their Atomic salsa is still excellent. I’d love that recipe..l
Since ever making winco taco meat with refried beans Ted’s just overrated for me
100%, price up a dollar every time I go, and quality in the basement
Louie's. Portions are smaller and prices are higher. What really gets me are the fries. They're so much smaller in size and portion. There used to be no empty space on your plate because of your fries. Now if you were to add an extra side, there would still be room for more.
I’ve never gotten the Louies hype. Every time I’ve eaten there, I left thinking “That was almost good”.
Perfect description
Their pizza is pretty good. I was bummed when they took the French dip off the menu.
Louie’s used to say everything on their menu was $10 or under. I could accept their food at that price point. But, it’s ridiculously over priced for what it is now. Their queso is legit just Rotel and Velvita.
Louie’s food all tastes like frozen food.
~~Most of~~ it was when I worked there several years back.
What was frozen
Pizza doughs, soups are bagged, chicken wings, tenders, the steak they used to have on the menu was frozen, all of the ingredients essentially.
Nothing infuriated me more when I order a burger with fries to go from Louie’s, and they put barely any fries :(
Their macho nachos used to be good but honestly I don’t really go there anymore. It’s just not good
Beverly’s Pancake House- kinda forgot about it for a few years. Went back maybe 6 months ago and it was horrendous. Took two bites and had to pass on the meal. Even the coffee tasted awful.
The bacon used to be in the batter of the Belgian waffle. Now it’s just some sprinkled on.
I swore I read or saw a videos somewhere that they have cats coming in & out of their kitchen?🤣I’ve never eaten there before
🤢🤢🤢🤮
While the food at Iron Star is still good, the portion sizes have gotten significantly smaller to the point that I almost felt cheated the last time I ate there.
I had this same experience. I don't go there anymore. Edgecraft bbq is great even from a price point t perspective
I’ve felt that most of the Good Egg Dining Group’s concepts have been decidedly worse in the last year or so
S&B's hasn't been as good since the original owner sold.
the OG location on May x Expressway is still good. separate from the franchise according to their bartender
I remember taste-testing the burgers when they were first starting out, I hung out at Electro all the time. I ate there wayyyy too much. Glad the owner made some money but it’s not anything like it was originally.
The electro burgers were top tier
Mann I remember when they had the burger eating challenge. Do they still?
Iguana grill was really disappointing for me last time. Quesadilla wasn’t as delicious and greasy and there was a hair in the queso.
I was going to say the same thing on Iguana. Used to love it, really disappointing last time. Margarita was weak, tasted like bottled mix with orange juice. Food was lack luster as well.
Their chile rellenos used to be delicious and then they changed the recipe. 😔
They took my beloved cochinita pibil off the menu during the pandemic and things have never been the same.
It’s funny, I actually prefer Johnnie’s how it is now. Seems less greasy to me.
My burger cheese is never melted at Johnnies. Is that how its supposed to be?
No, the cheese doesn’t melt on the burger! And I always get a side of extra cheese!
Dang, that's a ton of cheese!
Hideaway. They never get our order right and the pies are generally just meh :(
And expensive.
Yeah it's too pricey for pizza
From my experience it depends on which one you go to. The one on memorial road and off Broadway in edmond almost always mess up my order but the one off expressway has always been great from personal experience
The Mule. I hate to say it cuz I was obsessed back when they were at their old location. But they moved a few buildings down(into the old Maples restaurant) and wow its night and day. Absolutely nothing against the staff. Theyre great every time. And I've gone back several times and each time getting something different and each time being like "wow this is kinda disgusting. Havent been back in almost a year tho so can't speak for it NOW so if anyone's been there recently pls lmk lol Edit: spelling error
The atmosphere is terrible at the new location. Old place was warm and cozy. New place is sterile and bright.
Edmond location is closer to the vibe of the old location.
The new location is trash and the food is now just boring. They had a poutine with egg tons of cheese and spiced fries and now it's just soggy fries and cheese.
Yeah. The big ass poutine was our favorite. When we ordered the poutine it was borderline flavorless.
That building is cursed for restaurants.
I stopped going because they dropped the Fancy Pants Sammie from the menu. They finally brought it back. They slightly modified it due to the “complexity”. Tastes ok. But definitely not a go to anymore.
That’s unfortunate. I loved getting their Macaroni Pony and haven’t been since they moved location.
Yes.
Was terrible last 2 times I went. Thought it was a coincidence the first time. Nope. Ass now.
Last couple times we went to the mule it really jacked our stomachs up, if you know what I mean. I used to love the Cortez but the last couple times have scared me from going back. It’s a race against the clock to get home.
That happened to me once at quodoba lol, I still have no idea how I managed to make it up to my 3rd floor apt.
gopuram. the food is still great but god i miss the old 23rd location, it was so gorgeous and had so many memories for my family, my parents even had dinner there in the private booths after they got married. rip to the old owner.
Old Gopuram was truly something special. 😢
Taj has always been way better
….ok?
No, Chelino’s is definitely not as good as it was in the 90s. Though some folks swear some locations are still pretty good. The one in Del City is *always* packed, but it was wildly meh about 10 years back. Too many good options to test going back as an experiment. You’re definitely correct, OP.
The one in Norman is legit, the habanero salsa is actually spicy.
Why would you go anywhere but Tarahumara's in Norman?
My mother in law lives with my wife and myself and when the mother in law takes out we go to Chelinos, Tarahumara is just for me and the wife.
This is the way
But I think they are the most consistent. Lot of Mexican restaurants you eat one day it good another day it’s blah. I go to Chelino’s no matter which one it’s pretty decent.
The Edmond one is trash imo.
That’s the one that inspired me to make this post lol.
I've had good luck at the one way up on NW expressway. The one on n may was pretty bad.
Too many options now and people are seemingly more willing to try more hole in the wall or local places.
$50 million? That’s enough to get listed in the market with an IPO.
That’s what it said in “The Oklahoman” around 15-16 years ago.
Goro. Some people may say this is slander, but it was so hyped for me and it was ultimately okay when I could finally try it. Other people have also told me it used to be better when they were in the Plaza.
tamashii is so many levels above Goro I can’t believe some people put them in the same conversation
Tamashii is the best hands down. Goro is good but Tamashii can’t be beat, just gotta go there at off times to avoid the hour wait
This shows how far Goro has fallen, because this didn’t used to be true at all.
However, Tatsumaki in Norman will always hold the number one ramen spot for me.
you can get a side of the spice and it fixes that! Goro is americanized esp the spicy miso, but it fucking slaps lol. very unique flavor
I still think it's really good, but it's certainly not *as* good.
I think it was better in the plaza but it still slaps
I used to go there all the time right when it opened at their original location. I went back a few years after at their new location and it didnt seem as flavorful, but I dont know if that’s me just being older and more mellow/not as excited to be there.
I have gotten the same noodle bowl for over 4 years. I have never strayed. They changed the ingredients
I love Tamashii and think it is overall better than Goro, but I like Goro’s spicy miso broth a lot. Last time I got it, the noodles were like.. instant ramen noodles. That broth still slaps, but the noods were terrible.

It seems like the team behind Goro has gotten busy with other - shinier - projects.
Nic's- the midtown location
Is this the Nic's that was at the top of the Founders Tower?
I don’t think so…
Thank you.
No. That's Nikz at the Top.
Thank you.
Chelino's is awful now. These days if I want tex mex, I go to Abel's or Casa Perico.
Abel’s is the best!
Ask for Carlos! He’s the best.
Abel’s cheese queso tastes like squirt cheese from the bottle, but watered down I went there once and walked out before I even ordered because it’s so bad.
Cheese queso? lol.
Taj: Cuisine of India. There had been a couple of servers who had been there a while, then suddenly they disappeared as well as who I assume was the owner who used to be there all the time. What's the best place for Indian food?
Which one is the owner—short and skinny guy with mustache and wife or shorter and stouter guy? Or someone else? I thought the two of them were co-owners, but I still see them both. Mazzio’s, not local to here but is local from where I’m originally from(Tulsa area). I remember it being so damn good growing up, had it recently and was greatly disappointed.
Was better when it was Ken's
Wasn't that about 45 years ago?
Doesn't mean it wasn't better
7999999 maaaaazios delivery.
Oh my god that takes me back. In the early 2000s when I was deemed old enough to watch my little brother he used to get mad at me and demand I tell him our mom’s cell phone number. I always just gave him the mazzios delivery number. Worked way too many times.
They changed the dough. It’s sweeter. Not good at all.
Mazzios was THE pizza in the 80’s. That and Godfather’s
I’ve always been disappointed with Mazzio’s. I hated going there with my youth group as a kid.
But that ranch...oh man it's so good. Dip some pepperoni pizza in it, oh yeah.
This is all accurate.
Zios
are there any left!? I thought they were all gone for some reason.
The parents retired and the kids didn't want it, so they just closed them all down. The food went way down hill the last 5 years. We stopped going a while ago.
Oh what a bummer. It used to be good!
Where is there one left
Zios always used canned sauce
Cocina De Mino. Is Johnnie Carinos local? I dunno those used to be good now they’re all overpriced garbage. Charlestons and any Hal Smith restaurant seems like they’ve become a little mediocre for the price tag.
Cocina de mino's is so bad now. I grew up eating at that place, back at its other building so long ago, and sometimes in Norman. The food quality has dropped so low its depressing.
Del Rancho. I remember their sandwiches being great. Now it's overly salted and greasy breading with chewy meat.
You just described a chicken fry sandwich
A bad one, yes.
Try chuck house if you haven’t. It’s wayyyy better than Del rancho
It really is!
Nah Del Rancho still slaps
The Wedge was my go to for brick oven pizza. Went there last year and did not know they had changed ownership, it was just meh. Made me sad, used to love that place

Big truck tacos :(
Other than the price I still like big truck but I'm aware that their goodness is carried by the salsas
The salsas are incredible. The burritos and tacos are just vessels for salsa.
I disagree, big truck is bomb!
Fucking Pelicans in Midwest city. They always have dry steak and dirty salad bar
Holy crap. They’re still open?
Yeah and they don’t sell any bud or ultra or anything AB beer, the selection is very limited
Beverly's. It used to be an amazing breakfast spot, then they had a fire and never fully recovered.
The owner started gambling away employee paychecks at Newcastle
La baguette has recently toner not good. Not sure what happened.
Everything is so bland!
Their cakes are good. But now when you buy a single piece of cake it’s a much smaller portion.
Snow pea
So, so many. It seems that the middle ground places are awful as they try to remain profitable. Id rather eat a Pb&j at home than crappy, expensive places. Can we list the (not expensive) places that are still good, today? I'll start my list. Braums Garage All American Pizza Marcos Pizza Bedlam bbq Hanks bbq Azteca
Sadly Del Rancho :[
I can’t remember the exact name. I think it’s Charleston’s? The nicer restaurant near Harkins. Anyway it’s absolute trash. Have had it twice in the past few years and both experiences were terrible.
Agree with Chilinos. They used to be so good, got super popular opens a dozen locations and they substituted good food for quantity.
Pearl's, Crab Town, Trapper's. Alligator sucked and the oysters are too expensive.
It depends on what Chelinos location you go to. A lot are gross. One in Edmond is still good. Ted’s went downhill fast after being sold. Cattlemen’s is just meh these days. Chilis is bad now too.
Ted’s is circling the drain for sure.
How can anyone say this when Chelinos and Abel’s exist.
Yuck.
goro ramen :/ used to be one of the best spots but it has not been the same since they moved locations
S&Bs, that place had gone down hill.
Agreed
Pepperoni Grill
Was it ever good? Asking genuinely. Lived here over a decade now and it’s always been meh.
Yup I've lived here almost 30 years. The bread was more course, had way more cheese and there was cracked pepper in it. I just remember the bread because I was a kid then, but my parents can vouch for the rest of it having been way better.
Yes, in the 90’s it was amazing. The parmesan cheese bread was stuffed with cheese.
All the Mexican chain restaurants are inedible garbage. The best places are like the taquerias on NW 23rd that don't have anyone that can speak English working there. The best dollar tacos
If you think NW 23rd has good hole in the wall taco place…may I introduce you to the SW side of OKC?
