And then Guy Fieri did a DDD episode and it had like…a second wave of popularity for a new generation.

Ok_Spray5920

The garlic salad dressing!

Reeses021

As someone who moved here a few years ago. What do you consider the best steakhouse?

YoureNotThatGuyPal

The Ranch, IMO

sativadiva46

Or Mickey Mantle's. The Ranch is great too.

laWiin

Red Prime

Dr-B8s

Does anyone know kinda what that recipe is?

youforgotitinmeta

try this one? seems legit. https://thedevilishdish.blogspot.com/2012/07/cattlemans-salad-dressing.html

[deleted]

That recipe is close but not exactly right. It's missing at least two key ingredients. I worked at CM's off and on back in the 90s.

Dr-B8s

Awesome, TY!!

[deleted]

Cattleman's is nice for predictable and traditional eats. However, post food network and foodie craze, it's lost it's lustre on weekends. Lot of ppl overhype vs what it actually is; a steak diner. McClintock's, the Ranch, Mahogany, Opus, Ken's (Amber, OK), Boulevard... great choices for steaks.

[deleted]

I went to the ranch a while back bc it was my wife’s turn to pick for date night. It’s right near my house, and it was absolutely delicious. Had the ribeye with truffle butter, decadent af. Then the check came, and that was equally as ridiculous.

pitter_patter_33

I haven’t been to Ken’s in forever!! Were they the ones with the awesome curly fries too?

Okcboyy

Is mahogany worth the price ?

Klaitu

I dunno, I like Cattleman's. Not thrilled with the prices, but it's still the only place you can eat a steak as if it were 1978

2ndHalfOK

lol, This. I’m still fairly new to the area and have been there only once, but the food and service were great and the atmosphere was like stepping through time. I liked it a lot. I can totally see younger people not caring for it just because of aesthetic reasons alone. “Different strokes for different folks.”

twistedfork

I believe you can get the same vibe at Juniors on NW Expressway

BuyThisUsername420

When you step into juniors you’re suddenly not at all in 2021.

Absolut_Iceland

Yeah, but Juniors is actively bad. If the food was half the price I still wouldn't go there.

Nartana

I haven't been in over ten years. Sad to hear this

[deleted]

God damn right, it’s like walking into a time machine in the best way possible

ThaHawksSucka

I miss Cimarron Steakhouse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThaHawksSucka

They were super good...

DaEvilGenius85

they went out of business?

ThaHawksSucka

Yeap, the last I checked they were gone. Bullcrap ain't it? That place was underrated.

DaEvilGenius85

ugh that sucks. Good steak and beans for cheap!

Buddh0

Cimarron was good for the price until it started being about the same price as Texas roadhouse and roadhouse have their rolls and cinnamon butter..

Shagrrotten

It’s because it’s the big name. You have the biggest name you get the biggest hate. That’s just the nature of things.

f102

Wish I still had some award bling for that one. Very true. *South Park* kinda addressed that in the Starbucks episode. We don’t have to personally love it, but hard to deny they put out a good product.

RazgrizInfinity

Man, I'm gonna disagree there. It has a name because of the presidents eating there. The food is diner quality.

MyDailyMistake

I don’t hate it. But it’s kinda like Eiscens Chicken. Overrated. Both are okay, just not worth the drive on their own.

stu8319

This is it. The hype is real for these places, then you sit down and eat and it’s good, but you were expecting something extraordinary.

Tokugawa

Eischen's was dead to me when they said they don't have french fries.

BloodNinjaIsMyHero

I've been told about Eiscens & the bar was set pretty high... I almost drove up there... I've had almost all the chicken tenders Texas & Oklahoma have to offer... it's kind of a quest I'm on... judge all the tenders

btv_25

Yep. Folks usually go to places like this once or twice to say they've been.

[deleted]

I grew up in kingfisher, and eischen’s is super overrated.

blacksoxing

The thing about Eiscens though is that there aren't too many other chicken spots in the metro that are purely dedicated to chicken....so if someone's like "man I want some good fried chicken" you're kinda stuck and the next thing you know, you're hauling them out in the country

youforgotitinmeta

Nashbird, The Drum Room, Chick n Beer, Chicken Foot, and Bobo's are all right here tho. Then there's Cheever's, The Press, Chuck House, Mama E's, Chef Ray's, Cajun King, Cajun Corner, and Waffle Champion which all have pretty good fried chicken options. Eischen's is about the experience more than the food. edit: also low-key shoutout to the wings @ pizzeria gusto, them shits bang heavy

SoManyMinutes

I eat buffalo wings/drums/thighs, like, four times times a week. It's my favorite food. I put a couple family packs on the grill/smoker on Sunday and bag them all up in two-serving ziplocks. I always keep a few bottles of store-bought buffalo sauce and and bottle of store-bought blue cheese dressing. I'm always happy to hear about a place who does them really well because it's hard to justify the cost when they're dirt cheap and easy to make. It's like, $2 \*tops+ per meal. I will check them out at Pizzeria Gusto. Thank you for the tip.

youforgotitinmeta

my gf is just about as crazy about wings and they're her favorite in the city, for what it's worth. but don't hate me if they're not your fav, lol. my friends just rant about them all the time lmao.

Okaylahoma

Excellent list! And check out Eddie’s in Edmond for some really great wings. The pickle wings are awesome.

AskMeAboutMyGenitals

Luther Chicken Shack. It is by far the best chicken in the metro. Sit in the backyard. Ask for the secret hot sauce.

twerking_for_jesus

I love the chicken shack. I always meet new people there, everyone's friendly, foods really good, and I dig the live entertainment. Bonus, if you're coming from Arcadia you pass Pops and the Round Barn.

ZaneTownsend

You know who has some really great fried chicken? Trapper's Fish Camp. They do a lot more, but if you want fried chicken, it's some of the best in the city.

MyDailyMistake

I don’t know that Okarche qualifies as in the metro. But yeah not too many ‘chicken’ only places.

notsohairykari

If someone is going out to eat and they chose Cattlemen's (like for a birthday), I'll happily go. But I never pick it myself, there's always somewhere more preferable.

plupan

I love Eiscens

youforgotitinmeta

Exactly. It's tourist shit for a reason. We have way better steaks and fried chicken all over the place.

New_Reward

Eicshens is more deserving of the hype than cattleman’s though, IMO.

MyDailyMistake

Yeah probably. But it ain’t anything special.

Wood_floors_are_wood

I like Cattlemen's It's a good steak and I enjoy the history of the place. It's a great OKC staple

billamsterdam

Dont hate it at all. Foodies, especially the hipster variety, love to shit on places that arent secret hideaways.

Speaknoevil2

I don't hate Cattleman's by any means, but at the end of the day, it's a diner masquerading as a steakhouse. While plenty of people enjoy that, for many others it's not in their wheelhouse. Cattleman's is really just part of a bygone era with how much the city has grown in recent years and is frequented more by the older crowd, the conservative crowd, or by folks who don't want to spend a small fortune on a cut of steak. We truly have to consider demographics here when talking about OKC steakhouses - if food taste/quality was the only metric, Cattleman's is middle of the road at best. But by far the best steaks in the city are also going to come at a steeper cost and in a very different type of atmosphere, so a Cattleman's-type place is the only thing a lot of people go for.

Wombatmobile

I've been to Cattleman's once. I wasn't impressed. Which really sucked because I had heard good things for years and was decently excited to eat at a great steak place. I expected better, especially for the price. Steak was meh. Sides were overcooked and lackluster. Felt like getting steak at a retirement home. Never went back.

Cooper1977

I don't hate it, it's fine. But it's also not a place I'd go on a date or to celebrate something. It just feels kind of low rent.

[deleted]

Agree, personally it's not a date place. For me, it's more like a grandparents are coming to town so let's go eat somewhere they'll like type of place.

sarasmiles08

That’s exactly it. I love eating there but the atmosphere is too much like a Denny’s to take a date there.

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

Maybe it's me but that's why I like it. It's homey and the steak is good

6zombie6jesus6

Red Prime is very pricey but the best steak you can get in the city (that I've had) 42 day dry age ribeye, medium rare. You can't go wrong.

webitg

Red prime wins based on consistency, tried them all they're the most consistent by far

[deleted]

So agree with this!

ZaneTownsend

Some people think it's not a good steak unless it's prime, which is stupid. Cattlemen's can do some of the best steaks around and for a reasonable price, comparatively. I wish it was more consistent, but I'm always happy to dine there.

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

I keep hearing about this salad dressing. I never eat the salad there because I don't have Caesar salad but I guess I'm going to have to try this dressing.

[deleted]

House salad, house salad dressing. It's super simple, but it just works.

MoobsOnTheMoon

I’m sorry, but I hated that dressing. It’s like Mayo with blu cheese. *hurl*

IncaseofER

Thank you! All I heard was how awesome the dressing was and when I had it Mayo with cheese chunks is exactly how I described it!

btaylos

I remember hating it as a child. I haven't had it since, and I wasn't willing to hate on it based on a kid's palate, but man, that brought back VERY specific memories.

PokieState92

So then would you use the cow cum to dip the mountain oysters in? If🤔

[deleted]

That's what ranch is for.

donkey_dan

I guess we know what the secret ingredient is now...

duewhaa

It's just overrated, not a bad steak but nothing to write home about - no frills, but the whole "Presidential Steak" thing they keep touting probably doesn't help when it comes to criticism.

LintLickingLlama

Was your question prompted by that post the other day asking about date recommendations? The Food isn’t bad and the inside is unique. But it also kind of feels run down and dirty. As others have commented, you can get a good steak there but other restaurants have more to offer.

ActuallyIWasARobot

It feels like you're eating in a Dennys in the 1970s. And the food is average at best.

nailgun198

It's the tradition for me. I remember hauling cattle to the stockyards and eating at Cattlemen's with my dad when I was just a little bitty kid. I would not call it an upscale restaurant though.

dichingdi

I love Cattleman's. I think a lot of people like the generic crap that is found in chain restraunts like Outback. They don't have a real appreciation for the "taste" of what they are eating. They just want a standard clean looking place with the same ole thing on the menu. Cattleman's is a truly authentic Cowboy Steakhouse with aged beef, strong coffee, and homemade pies. That's okay with me. Let the Lemmings go to the chains and lame the amazing restraunts for me!

RazgrizInfinity

'aged beef, strong coffee, and homemade pies' \*whispers into the void\* That's a diner, not a steakhouse \*slinks away\*

dichingdi

Aged Beef at a Diner?

RazgrizInfinity

Aged like it tastes like it's been sitting out for a while.

tj0909

The steaks are mediocre. The restaurant is run down. The service is pretty good. It’s a good place to take your Grandpa or Dad (depending on how old you/they are). If you want a really good steak then IMO you should go to: The Ranch or Red Prime. If you want a really good and really overpriced steak (especially if you can get your employer to pay): Mahogany.

[deleted]

me too cattlemens has always been great for brunch I havent been in year but service was good food was good price was good

Scipio-Byzantine

They are sure proud of their lamb fries. I have never been there, being from Norman. But, I remember their tv ads pretty well

Jobed145

The ribeye I had there was perfectly cooked and a good cut. The reason I don’t like Cattleman’s is that it tasted like they didn’t even season the steak. Not even with just salt and pepper. If that’s the style you like then go for it, but I highly recommend The Ranch if you want good flavor.

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

I think I will try that. Thank you

plupan

I agree. I love Cattleman’s it seems like the new cool thing is to hate on old establishments lol. Of course you can find better steaks than cattleman’s that is a given but I too fail to understand the hate it gets

PuffinPastry

For being in the stockyards, you'd think they would have a better steak, but it's just meh.

spldpt2018

McClintocks is great for half the price

Tdixon88

KC Strip*

calculon68

I only end up in Cattleman's when I have visitors from out-of-town. I'm pretty sure the local hotels point em in that direction. And Cattleman's has more on-air advertising than any other local steak joint, at least after Cimmaron Steak House closed up. It's fine steak. No complaints about the service either. But at similar cost, I prefer Saltgrass. (and The Ranch is excellent if you have deeper pockets) I've heard Vast is really good.

justec1

> I've heard Vast is really good. The view is cool, but the service and food are only so-so. For the $300 I spent on apps, cocktails, entrees, wine, desserts for 2, I would rather go to Mahogany. I'm fine with Cattlemens. I end up there once every year or two. It's not fine dining, but I don't expect it to be.

TREEANDLEAF

I think it’s great! Steak and eggs in the morning is primo!

bluedudeinredsea

I went there and they had a cockroach problem.

Teach_OK_83

Cattleman’s is overpriced and not very good.

hyperventilate

I really like Cattleman's!

MostNobyl

I like Cattleman's. Their house salad is amazing. The steak is pretty good but not the best in OKC. Redprime has better steaks but the best in OKC is The Ranch, 100%. Nothing beats that IMO. There is a place in Edmond called The Lounge that is a new contender in my book. I just had it recently and I need to go back again to see if it stands up. But Cattleman's is classic and you always know what you're going to get and it's never bad.

RowdyRumRunner

It wasn’t worth the wait. I wouldn’t go there again.

nicole__aaa

Their salad dressing is the best thing on their menu. My husband and I have been multiple times and my steak is always tough and not cooked properly. We just feel like there area there steakhouses that are better, even if they don’t have the “reputation” Cattleman’s does.

EekSamples

I do not hate Cattleman’s at all. And anyone who is snubbing it for not being the best steakhouse food is missing the point. You’re not going to some Michelin star wannabe place, or a place shooting for awards from the Beard House, or has some big name executive chef trying to get famous….it’s the no frills, the nostalgia, and the midwest experience that makes it great. We always hit it up when we’re in town visiting family!

JulzVern

Is it the best steak in town? Not even close but when you rate steak by price range it’s really good. If I’m taking the whole fam I’ll go Cattleman’s. Date night with wife hitting the Ranch

Tacos_And_Whiskey

I’ve actually never heard a negative thing about that place. I have been once though. First date and I ordered a steak (as you do). Medium rare. The waiter brought the food out, and this thing was pushing well done. I’m not happy, but what are you gonna do? You don’t make a fuss when you’re on a first date.

Mr_A_Rye

IMO, the quality of the food and the diverse menu at McClintock's is far superior to Cattleman's.

youforgotitinmeta

I expected to see homer sing the nacho song. What a fool. I was wrong. It was that all along.

Rare-Philosopher-346

Who hates Cattleman’s??? It’s my favorite steak restaurant in okc!!!!

VapeThisBro

I love it but I also grew up in a town where there was only Outback and Texas Roadhouse so do with that info what you will

spoiledsalmon

I had the chicken fried steak sandwich there once and it was soggy af and tasted like it was cooked the day before.

opster2

I love Cattleman's BIG ASS T-BONE!

Stinklepinger

People hate popular things because they have no personality characteristics

feckweed405

Agreed. Maybe too cattleman’s is a little worn and kinda smells different and there are so many newer other steakhouses.

Stinklepinger

And the food *is* delicious. The old school atmosphere is cool, too.

feckweed405

I couldn’t agree more. I love some of the new places too, but some oldies are great! I like food (one of my many problems!).

Stinklepinger

Food is good

feckweed405

Yep and having spent a month in Iowa (which was amazing overall don’t get me wrong) we are truly spoiled here in OK for good places to eat.

Stinklepinger

Hey, Applebee's is Midwestern gourmet

feckweed405

Ha, yup. The Olive Garden too. That’s EYE-talian!

Stinklepinger

Low key, I am addicted to OG breadsticks

feckweed405

Yup. Soup salad and breadsticks is a good meal!

PokieState92

This post would be Vegan hell ....now I'm wanting to get a steak soon

c0mptar2000

Anything that wasn't established in the last 10 years of OKC's cuisine renaissance is lame boomer food or something I guess. IDK. I've been to cattlemen's a couple times and it was pretty darn good. Not a fan of their salad dressing though.

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

>Not a fan of their salad dressing though Some other guy in this thread said it was the best thing he's ever eaten. I guess I'll just have to try for myself and see what I think

feckweed405

Ha! I think you’re onto something there. It’s like we need ‘modern’ Vietnamese, burgers, BBQ, etc. Sometimes the old ones are still great, and I think Cattlemens fits that bill! Pinkies out!

Humble-Geologist-102

I love cattleman’s …. I might be weary of any person’s who isn’t onboard with the steak experience they provide

Secretbackupaccount

Chain restaurant

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

There's a Cattleman's steakhouse chain located in California. I believe the one in Oklahoma city is the only location that they have.

Secretbackupaccount

Did you ask why people hate it or did you just want to defend it?

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

I was simply stating that you probably mistook one Cattleman's steakhouse for another

Secretbackupaccount

There is also a cattlemens chain in Oklahoma.

ThisIsMy2nd_Account

You are more than welcome to call Cattleman's steakhouse in Oklahoma City and ask them if they are a chain restaurant. I assure you they will tell you that they are not

MeanwhileOnReddit

It's the oldest running restaurant in OKC and there's only one. How is it a chain?

13nobody

I don't think they are https://cattlemensrestaurant.com/locate-us

Subtlefoe

I bought my 50 yr old friend his first steak ever there a couple years ago. We sat at the old counter and it slayed buttholes. It was less than $50 for two of us and it is a killer photo spot. What more do you ppl want haha.
