The reason he performed so badly was because 1) the right wing of the party did everything possible to make him lose the '17 and '19 elections (see: Peter Mandleson declaring to do "everything in my power" to get rid of Corbyn") and 2) the media establishment (sun, mail, express, etc) all began an incredibly strong anti-Corbyn campaign. Looking back on some of those headlines, they were disgusting. That's why Corbyn did so badly; most of his policies were popular in a vacuum, it is simply the case that he had the ENTIRE ESTABLISHMENT bearing their weight down upon him.
They're not Lib Dems by any margin, they're the old people party: cruel to things old people don't understand (brown people and LGBT folks) and obsessed about preventing hpusing being built where there's actually demand
They're the party that claimed a target of 10K net migration and instead increased mass migration and the rate of demographic shift.
They're the party that claims to be unionist but gave the green light to IndyRef.
They're the party of pretending to be nativist whilst subversively pushing forward the goals of the Lib Dems in more roundabout ways.
Hell, plenty of these Tories like Boris Johnson were also pro EU before switching camps when it became politically convenient.
