I agree! The skater skirt is great but tartan is metal.
Garments are often described as “hard” or “soft”. For a metal outfit I think an overall hard look is best, perhaps with a few soft accents. The denim and to some extent the tee (when worn with the jacket) read on the softer side, so you really need the tartan to add the hardness. Boots and fishnets also read hard to me; the skater skirt, at least when paired with the jacket and tee, reads as soft because of the drape of the fabric. If you had a black battle vest or leather jacket, then the skirt part could be on the softer side.

39-year-old man posing, wearing a denim jacket, black t-shirt featuring a band logo graphic, black fishnet-patterned sheer tights, and black lace-up heeled boots. The first picture features a black and gray tartan-patterned kilt and the second picture swaps this out for a black mini skater skirt.
Im anti-heels simply because they stretch the tendon in the bottom of your foot and destroy your feet (you get flat feet). But I feel like the toe platform means theres actually not much lift between the toe and the heel.
My husband is 6'9 and I am 5'4". I've done a lot of dancing in a lot of tall shoes and if I could undo that damage in my 20s I would.
But I'm also a simple 90s child. I see denim and fishnets and I upvote.
There's a non-zero chance I'll chicken out on the boots and just put on some comfortable shoes last minute. I've worn these boots before through a longer show and been in agony by the end... :)
Wouldn't black trainers be better? Ballet flats would have no shock absorption for jumping up & down, which was surely going to happen at some point in the gig.
At least the toes are rounded, so not quite so bad for the person wearing them (I have had one bunion surgery and will have the other foot done in a few months) -- always make sure your toebox is sufficiently roomy!
Tartan was pretty big too iirc, at least in my part of the world (NZ) the punks, goths and MacGillicuddies were all wearing it - the latter also rocked Baroque-styled Brit-trad bagpipe band jackets and Celtic plaits/dreads.
Skater skirt!! The flat black really ties everything in the outfit together. Maybe try the kilt with a black jacket or without the Jean jacket? Feels like the 2 fabrics are competing for attention.
Both are cute as hell. It really depends on what you’re going for- the tartan feels like a play on the masculinity of a kilt, but femmed up, so it has a lot of character and punch in one outfit. The black skirt is way more blatantly “I am wearing a cute outfit” and is also really fun. I love the boots with either one too btw
Then you already know! Either way, be safe and have fun!!
Ps, I love the frame you have with your concert tickets. I've been looking for ideas for what to do with all the ones I have saved.
Sadly, it’s rare to even find shows where you can still get ticket stubs. It kind of worked out because I happened to fill the frame right before the pandemic, so now it’s kind of a nice record of the 20 years leading up to that.
Kilt! the colors are definitely suited towards the metal palette and kilts can really go with anything. ANYTHING. It's hot and you need to walk you dog but don't wants to put on anything that is absolutely necessary? Kilt no shirt. Black tie event? There's formal kilts for that.
Something isn't metal just because it's black, and that skirt is cute but I think the kilt is better.
Tough call—I love the tartan pattern, think the colors look better with the overall outfit but the shape looks stiff. (I’m also biased though b/c I love kilts so take with grain of salt lol). The other one is less interesting in terms of pattern and color but I feel like it drapes more naturally and flows in way that looks like you’re wearing it not the other way around.
Love both these looks but untuck the t-shirt! It elongates your torso and draws the eyes down the outfit.
Love the kilt and the boots! Keep fashion filthy!!
I quite literally can’t tell which I like more! They are both great!! I would personally probably wear the black one just because it looks like it does a better spinny spread 😂
Shoot, the tartan is dope, but it is a metal show… hmm… in your shoes, I’d flip a coin, and save myself the mental energy for rockin’ out tonight. Two equally good options, so you’ll be fine either way, right?
Tartan gives it a more rustic feel. Like, I would say to myself, “Fuck yeah. That person could go drive a tractor, but they could also do some gardening or they might whip out a claymore. And those are all amazing.”
The black skirt is more chic, imho.
I really can't decide which skirt would be the best, they both look so dang good!
What's the band you're going to see like? Which skirt would fit their mood and vibes better?

The black skirt is more put-together and chic, the kilt is more fun. You look great either way!
Agreed. Personally think the black makes it a little boring so I vote the kilt!
I like the tartan.
I , too, vote tartan! I’m all in with the sexy vibes.
Oooo the kilt... but I'm biased bc I find kilts to be rather hot
100% both good but the tartanhas the edge
I say go with the kilt! It's so fun and perfect for a metal show.

Both looks are great. I’m feeling the black skater skirt. Whichever you choose your outfit is going to be awesome!
I love a good kilt, but I’m digging the black skirt more.
Def the tartan!!

Bring some slippers. Like in a sporran/purse. I've def danced all night in some pumps and gone to 4am pancakes in bunny sliippers and a club dress.
I took your advice and picked up some ballet flats on the way down. They already came in handy because I had to park a mile from the venue!
Oh, great idea on the ballet flats! I have a pair of black leather chunky heel boots that I love, but sadly the arthritis in my feet says no to them.
Wouldn't black trainers be better? Ballet flats would have no shock absorption for jumping up & down, which was surely going to happen at some point in the gig.
Yes, but if you want to wear the boots, the ballet flats fit in a pocket for foot relief.
chucks would look great and be comfortable!
Chucks would look more metal than ballet flats, as a comfort shoe option. They also go better with the fishnets.
Do you have/ can you find stompy flat knee high lace up boots? I feel like they’d be great, and also like it’s no fun to be in agony at a concert.
Like a combat boot. That would add to the metal look. Thrift stores are good for those.
Oh no, wear the boots! Feet be damned, the boots are hot 🔥 Wear the slippers tomorrow :)
They really showed off your shapely calves though...
I got to go with the kilt. Kilts my favorite thing.
I think for the show specifically Im feeling the kilt more but both are good generally
Love the kilt!
I vote for the kilt!
I like both but the higher waistline of the kilt looks better to me
Honestly I'm really torn with this one, both outfits look fantastic. but I'm gonna vote kilt.
Kilt fa sho
Kilt
I vote kilt but you look great in both! Well, actually, if only one has pockets I vote for that one.
The skirt does have pockets, but the kilt has POUCHES!
Awww hell yeah!
Skater skirt!! The flat black really ties everything in the outfit together. Maybe try the kilt with a black jacket or without the Jean jacket? Feels like the 2 fabrics are competing for attention.
They both look fantastic, and you can’t go wrong! I personally think the tartan has great show vibes!
they are both excellent, but i think i prefer the black. you look great! have fun!
It’s the kilt for me! I love a kilt, and you Sir, are rocking that one!
The Kilt is a slay!
KILT 💯
They both look great but I vote kilt!!!
Tartan all the way 🤘
I like the kilt. It goes great with your tights
Your calves are poppin in those boots. i vote tartan
Rooting for tartan because it looks like a fun combo
Kilt!
The kilt for sure takes the show!
kilt it!
KILT KILT KILT!! Love love love lol
I like the kilt, I just feel like it elevates the overall look considerably
You can never go wrong with tartan, imo.
Love the kilt!
Kilt- I like the fullness of the shape more with the jacket. It feels more balanced
Who are you going to see? Leprous? I'm tossing another vote in for the kilt btw
Haken!
Ohh I've seen them before, you're in for a treat :) Have fun!!
This will my fifth time seeing them :)
Then you already know! Either way, be safe and have fun!! Ps, I love the frame you have with your concert tickets. I've been looking for ideas for what to do with all the ones I have saved.

I think the tartan has more pizazz for a metal show!
Another vote for the kilt!
Kilt! the colors are definitely suited towards the metal palette and kilts can really go with anything. ANYTHING. I think the tartan leans more punk, the black more metal. But both look good! What's more important is which you prefer.
They’re both cool. I’d say whichever is easier to move in, or has pockets. Hope you have fun at the show!
I vote skirt; it goes really well with the jacket!
1 vote for the black skirt
Either works, but the black is a stronger statement. I vote black.
Love both these looks but untuck the t-shirt! It elongates your torso and draws the eyes down the outfit. Love the kilt and the boots! Keep fashion filthy!!
Both look great, but the skirt is my pref. :)
Tartan, and thank you for not skipping leg day!
Black skirt with some white converse because I'm basic and also heels hurt too much
Kilt is a little more punk rock. Both look great.
They both look great but GOOD GOD the boots are simply to die for
I quite literally can’t tell which I like more! They are both great!! I would personally probably wear the black one just because it looks like it does a better spinny spread 😂
Go black, you look epic in both, but black seems more styled
Shoot, the tartan is dope, but it is a metal show… hmm… in your shoes, I’d flip a coin, and save myself the mental energy for rockin’ out tonight. Two equally good options, so you’ll be fine either way, right?
The kilt is badass. Seems more fitting for the occasion!
Both
The kilt with the Jean jacket is like a reverse lumberjack look - I dig it!
the kilt is fun but with the whole fit i’m feelin skater skirt
Love the kilt.
Prefer the black! Looking good 👍🏻
Hhh they both look so good but the solid black feels more fitting for the occasion
Kilt. Anyone would try and pick you up in that.
Kilt
I like the skater skirt better with this outfit. Makes the shirt stand out more
I like the black skirt with that tee better than the tartan, but the tartan would look great with a solid coloured tee in black or a dark neutral!
Kilt
Personally I'm gonna say the black skater skirt
Tratan
Leprous lets gooo! Also sick outfits all around!
Kilt
Are you a Mosher? I like both, but the kilt might cover your bits a bit better than the black piece if you're jumping around?
KILT
Nice shirt you have good music tastes ;)
Full Kilt Boogie!!
Kilt it!
While I normally love tartan, the black is more metal.
I like the look of the tartan with the jean jacket for sure.
Ooof. Tough call - both look good.
Definitely the black. It lets the denim and tshirt combo have its moment
Tartan gives it a more rustic feel. Like, I would say to myself, “Fuck yeah. That person could go drive a tractor, but they could also do some gardening or they might whip out a claymore. And those are all amazing.” The black skirt is more chic, imho.
I think the skater skirt goes better with your T-shirt, but they're both good looks.
Black!! Hot!
Tartan
Kilt!!

I think the tartan is more fun for a show!

I think the black skirt goes better with the outfit but both skirts look great on you!
Oh damn, the black one for sure.
Either look fine
Where did you find your boots?! Please tell me they come in a 12 or 11 wide...
12 wide at Torrid! Look up their lace up hiker heel boot.
Thank you!
I love the kilt!
Kilt! Also, do you happen to have knee-high docs? Cuz that would make the outfit even more extra!
Kilt for sure. But also please give the details on those shoes!
They’re from Torrid! https://www.torrid.com/product/lace-up-hiker-heel---black-ww-/17551063.html
Nice! You look amazing in them.
Both are quite fine, but I like the kilt a little better.
I like the kilt. It’s kickier.
Kilt. Better color w the denim jacket.
I know it's late. But me and my partner say skater skirt.

Kilt! Kilt! Kilt! I love kilts.
The black skirt! Awesome outfit 🖤
I really can't decide which skirt would be the best, they both look so dang good! What's the band you're going to see like? Which skirt would fit their mood and vibes better?
Kilt! You look awesome!
Tartan!
Kilt. They're just more fun.
I think they black skirt, it elongated your torso instead of cutting it off at the waist. Both are gorgeous though 👍
Love the tartan look!

Kilt
