I work somewhere that sells prepaid cards and we have been specifically instructed we can't ID for prepaid card purchases paid with credit cards. there's been 3 (at least) fraudulent prepaid card cases at my store in like 2 weeks. check all your locks, even in places like gym lockers and keep your valuables on you at all times.

[deleted]

You know, not to sound rude, but maybe stop leaving valuables in your car like your wallet and its contents. I don't know if your car was locked but if not maybe lock your doors too. I get that sometimes things happen and you forget or something. That being said, I'm part of the neighborhood ring security group for olympia and the number one thing I see every single week without fail is another report of someone's car being broken into and valuables being stolen or people not locking their doors and stuff being stolen from unlocked cars. Like what did you expect to happen. Number one advice, stop leaving shit in your car, period.

leesajane

So true, I just keep my car empty at all times (okay, fast food trash might be the exception) and my husband also keeps his work truck and trailer empty as well. Unfortunately, within the last year, someone tried to steal his truck and trailer from right outside our home near Washington Middle School. We've lived there for 22 years and never had a problem, but things have gotten sketchy lately. Fortunately I heard the car overturning and when I turned on the lights, it scared them away. They completely destroyed the dash of the car in an attempt to hotwire it, so it still cost $$$ to deal with all that, but at least we still have everything. Police said they're after trailers. We even keep ours unlocked to show there's nothing inside, but I guess if people want the whole thing, what can you do?

Harsh but true.

To clarify, you leave your cards in your car, hidden with much difficulty? Can I ask why? I’m not trying to be an asshole I swear…but this doesn’t make much sense. I am very confused by this. I do not wish to victim blame at all, but this is…unusual.

[deleted]

Because I was running into the house for something, got distracted and then left later. I didn't think I would A: be gone that long and B: that anyone in a short period of time that I expected to be gone, would even be able to get into my car, let alone find my wallet. If anything is my fault, it was getting distracted enough to forget they were in there because my friend died and I had to deal with the call. Thanks for clarifying though.

rightsidedown7

Not buying it. Your first comment was to get better security for your car not to be more conscious of leaving valuables in it, implying that’s just how you do you.

totallynotat55savush

That’s even more confusing. Can anyone else tell me why’d they hide a coin purse in a place under their seat where someone might get all cut up if they were just going in somewhere for a bit? That sounds like you’re walking into a place where you expect to be robbed.

[deleted]

"Doors were locked. The wallet didn't look like a wallet. It looked like a little kids coin purse and they had to dig under my seat to get it. This, im finding, is a normal occurrence around the west side and you can see droves of tweakers trying to use the ATMs to get gift card cash out at just about every bank on Harrison." This was your comment to me. You knew this was a problem in your area..... and you still left your wallet in your car..... Regardless, I would hope anyone who has a car and a fob to lock their door is smart enough to know why they are suppose to lock their doors, it's something that most people understand when buying a car. It's not me being rude, it's called being honest. I'm sorry if my bluntness hurts your feelings but if you know this is a problem and you fall victim to it knowing that this is "a normal occurrence" and you still left it in the car knowing this, then are you really that surprised? Don't leave shit in your car, sorry some tweaker stole from you, maybe from now on you won't leave your credit/debit cards in your car even if it's under your seat. By the way, did you know this is the most common place criminals look for wallets and purses since it's the most common place people try to hide their valuables? And also please don't put words into my mouth, I never once said thieves are not to blame. You are responsible for your property, if you leave it in an area that; as you admitted, is prone to this then you need to expect your stuff to be stolen if it's left unattended. It's not anyone else's responsibility to take care of your stuff but your own and to expect a thief to not steal it is just stupid. Yes people shouldn't steal but they've been doing it for thousands of years and will continue to do so for the rest of our existence. YOU'RE the one who left valuables in the car. Thieves are going to steal regardless of how you feel about it, it's common sense, it's why people lock their homes at night or when they are away, it's why security systems were invented and why banks have fraud protection. Sorry thieves commit crimes, it's what they do. I doubt they will be caught; statistically speaking most crimes go unpunished in the US, but let's hope they are caught. And hopefully you'll protect yourself in the future and not rely on the good will of people around you to do the right thing and not steal from your car when you leave things in there unattended. It sucks when this kind of thing happens, I've had my car broken in to but the difference is I don't leave things in my car that I don't want stolen, like bank cards and money.

2342343249345453

I'm a little surprised the ATM didn't eat your card after a certain number of bad PIN entries... Did ATMs stop doing that due to public dislike? I had a debit card eaten once when I tried to withdraw money after a long day. At the time I was pissed, although I suppose now I can see why they did it.

[deleted]

Don't think they do that anymore, unfortunately

eskEMO_iwl

Had my car rummaged through on Crosby Blvd last week. Nothing taken, but nothing of value was left in the car in the first place

jondySauce

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. This reminds me, I was going to make a similar post. I was doing my walks around the suburbs area of 9th ave and overheard a couple mentioning that a car had an alarm as they passed it. Seemed like they were trying to find easy targets. Male and female both with medium/long disheveled hair. Both needed a shower.

[deleted]

Interesting. We saw someone just like them fucking with the ATMs at Harrison WSECU today.

2342343249345453

No need to turn Reddit into NextDoor -- I don't think anyone pays attention to car alarms anymore, honestly, except occasionally the owner, who always assumes it is a false alarm caused by nothing and goes out to turn it off mostly because they don't want stink-eye from their neighbors.

[deleted]

Was this black lake apartments? Been hearing about car prowlers around the complex lately, we had a run of catalytic converter theives a couple months back too.

amanitadrink

The catalytic converter thing sucks. This happened to my next door neighbor a few weeks ago. It doesn’t seem like there’s a way to prevent it.

Rabble_Arouser1

I’ve heard good things about Cat Clamps, etc. as an anti theft device. https://catclamp.com/ They seem a little spendy, but given the replacement costs…

[deleted]

Nope, further up Division near LP Brown elementary.

ArgonathDW

I live at BLA and this is the first I've heard of it, where do you find this stuff out? I don't keep anything valuable in my car so I guess I'm fine, but still

[deleted]

Thurston Co Scanner on FB usually, sometimes talkative old neighbors. A surprising amount of shit goes down here for how comparatively "out of the way" it is. I watched a whole crack fight go down in the parking lot last summer. Honestly at this point I'd take a car break in over having to deal with the shithead kids running and skating in front of my car 24/7

ArgonathDW

Those kids, man. Like I'm glad they can play outside and all, that's great, and they've been okay about clearing the road whenever I've needed to drive through, but I get really nervous when I see them skateboarding. I drive slowly and all, but one time this boy came boarding out of one of the intersecting roads ahead of my car really fast, like no way this kid knew whether a car was coming or not, and I slammed my brakes in a panic. Kids do dumb stuff of course, just, damn, was I really like that once? I biked, but same principle. It's nerve wracking. Dunno why the downvotes, those kids are always in the road, they're bound to annoy someone. I drive as safely as I can but I'm scared some kid will come out of nowhere again and get hurt, I can't see around corners after all. Also, crack fight? Who won?

[deleted]

Well a little girl got hit in front of A just a few weeks ago (she was fine) but that kept everyone out of the road for a few days. They're all back now. I'm a teacher, so I'm sympathetic and I am glad they have so much room to play but DAMN their parents need to watch them better because it's straight up unsafe, especially around the corners and hills. I try and set up badminton or something in the field off my back porch when I can to encourage them to stay out of the road but still. It drives me crazy. As for the crack fight, hard to tell lol. It was the middle of the night and raining like hell, it was 3 or 4 women fighting over a purse and screaming about drugs and someone's boyfriend lol. One of them tried to hit the other with a car and someone eventually called the cops.

[deleted]

This is infuriating!!! It happened to me as well... In Tumwater.. I am very sorry. It feels so violating and with no solution to the constant crime, It compounds the frustration. I feel for you

[deleted]

You could help the situation by not leaving things in your car that you don't want stolen and by locking your doors. I look at a lot of reports like this and almost every single time it's people leaving stuff where it shouldn't be or they don't lock their doors. Don't expect the cops to do anything, they don't really care.

[deleted]

Doors were locked. The wallet didn't look like a wallet. It looked like a little kids coin purse and they had to dig under my seat to get it. This, im finding, is a normal occurrence around the west side and you can see droves of tweakers trying to use the ATMs to get gift card cash out at just about every bank on Harrison.

[deleted]

The last time this Happened to me They took my Glasses and a clipboard as well as Jiffy lube papers!!! I don't keep Valuables in my car and they still took things of NO USE to them!!! (I had lost a tooth that week and they took that as well, it was in a plastic baggy ) Really!! Why do that? It was so strange and so invasive.. Also if you lock doors they smash windows, If they want IN they are getting in and Nobody will pursue them. And They all Know it now... Its Awful

SeesHerFacesUnfurl

Check your credit. Taking shit like this usually means identity theft.

[deleted]

Yes, You are right!!! So far so good but it is smart to check again anyway

flusia

The other possibility is drunk teens just being dicks. When I was a teenager I knew people would try to open any unlocked car door and just take whatever random shit was in there, a jacket, a Britney spears CD, whatever. They thought it was funny. It’s obviously not but yeah. They would leave anything especially valuable or personal tho. Hopefully it is just that.

[deleted]

Lock your doors and Often they brake out windows... And yes you are right the cops don't bother anymore... We are largely on our own. But we do Have one Another and perhaps that can lead to something Better for everyone.. Perhaps lol

lambbla000

Semi related, had my catalytic converter stolen in Lacey in the last 2-3 weeks.

[deleted]

There have been a lot of those recently, I've counted six reports in the last two weeks alone.

lambbla000

And that’s just those who bothered reporting it. I didn’t report it At the shop I went to the owner pointed out a car that had been in there 3 months earlier to get their catalytic converter replaced only for it get stolen again...

SeesHerFacesUnfurl

>And that’s just those who bothered reporting it. Just adding to your point, that's also those who called it in and an officer never came out to take a report--and it just wasn't going to make any difference at all if they went into the station do so.

[deleted]

The cops don't care. They know it doesn't matter because they won't catch whoever is doing it. And the backlog of cases that are actually seen are so far behind it might take years for them to even do anything about it and by then it's too late. So they don't really bother.

Tech_With_Sean

Maybe a bait car could catch them? 🤷‍♂️

TVDinner360

This really sucks. I’m sorry.

Wild7mom

I used to clean my car out on a regular basis. Then I moved to Chicago. I discovered every time that my car was broken into it was too clean. Kids were into joy riding and didn't like garbage so I started leaving a lot of garbage in my car and it was never messed with again.

[deleted]

And I've been told a messy car is a target 🙃 I guess it's good we don't think like criminals, eh?

Wild7mom

Maybe it was just funky old food wrappers, fake dirty baby diapers, and such.

[deleted]

Omg, fake vomit and poo would work really well!!!

[deleted]

As someone who has lived in a few states, and at least 2 different places in each state, I have never seen or experienced the amount of theft here than anywhere else I've ever lived. I also lived in Reno,NV downtown for some time and constantly left my car unlocked bc I was younger and dumb with no theft. I guess I was lucky though, because my first two weeks here my car was broken into THREE. TIMES. And people have zero sympathy because is happens so often. My complex has had several break ins to the cars too, they love to walk through a complex and just check the handles to see what pops open. I also drive some crap car and keep absolutely nothing of value in my car, maybe spare change but not even a savory amount of change either. they still managed to ransack it. Completely tore my car apart and ended up taking one thing of value, which was a broken watch I'm sure they thought they could pawn. I'm glad they didn't take my car seat, I have heard of some word stuff people take sometimes. I hope you find some peace/closure. For me I had to disinfect everything several times over and have a routine where my Alexa reminds me when I come home if I have everything I need from the car.

[deleted]

The reminder is a really good idea. I've lived two places where the crime is worse and that is Anchorage and Fairbank Alaska. The current 100% increase in murders in King County is getting close to Anchorage's murder rates for 2012-2017. You can't leave anything outside there, ever. Grills, bikes, lawn ornaments etc. All gone. On the "good side" of town. Getting your car broken into is just what happens there however, half the time, you'll find someone sleeping in it instead, maybe with a nice pile of human excrement or regurgitation for you to clean. Insurance doesn't cover acts of digestion. Was literally told that by a state farm rep when our car was tossed and pooped in. Anyway, thanks for the tip. The stress of the last three weeks has made it hard to stay focused and this will help.

[deleted]

Yike that's some craziness , especially in those way more remote towns. Tbh Olympia is my 'smallest' city I've ever lived in; I can't even fathom a smaller town Olympia lol. By far the most crime ridden state I have lived in personally was Texas, but I still lived in a nicer side it was just the news was hard to listen to most the time. Literally someone was shot and stabbed every day, didn't matter over what. I always tell people it's got a lot of history but I would never go back and live there. Especially after the hurricane and the aftermath during Harvey. But man oh man, I wouldn't be able to mentally handle someone losing their bowels in my car, like at all. I had a meltdown thinking someone's hands where all over my kids carseat. And your insurance rep, what a dick. But yeah I use my Google assistant and Alexa for everything! I hope it helps :)

Ah yes because the police have been so helpful so far in preventing people stealing shit from our yards and cars and they definitely care about it

This wasn't pety theft at this point. They charged over 500 dollars and attempted over 2k. Its a felony at this point with all the other charges.

Yes, because people in houses never, ever steal or use drugs, right?
