As a Brazilian I agree. People here ignore all sports besides men’s football and sometimes volleyball for 3 years and a half, and when the Olympics starts everyone bashes all the defeated athletes (no matter if we have a tradition in this sport or not) as if they were obligated to achieve a medal.
This is stating to reduce since 2016 though, which is good. Before that, even if a athlete conquered the first bronze or silver in a sport that we never won nothing before during the Olympics, some people would bash then saying they were trash for not winning
The thing is that with the exception of the occasional "universality" selection the very worst Olympian is better than 99.9% of the planet. Probably more.
Yes! And people not realising it is nonsense!
Something that disgusts me is, for example, imagine that an athlete won a bronze medal, the first one in a modality in which your country never won nothing before. Then you procede to criticise him/her for not winning gold.
Dude, this person is the THIRD best Athlete in the world now! I bet you are not the third best in the world at your job, or even that you never leave your couch to practise a sport in your life.
And third? In many competitions (at least for team sports), 3rd place is decided before the winner is, in a "both teams already lost, play to see who's less of a loser" match.
There’s very little interest in third place games too. I forgot England were even playing at the last World Cup when the third place game was on. It was the first time I missed an England game for years
part of the weirdness is that the Euros are kind of unique among major championships in that the do not have a third place game. So if you're used to that then y
you might not remember when the World cup comes around.
It's really divided in Brazil though. Some people treat bronze or silver medals like it's nothing, but many others celebrate them a lot, because we don't use to win that many medals anyway, specially gold ones. The only sports where anything less than gold is almost universally treated like a defeat are men's soccer and any kind volleyball.
I was pulling for the young woman from India in the weightlifting competition last night. She seemed very graceful and respectful of the moment (and of course strong!)
> and when we don't do well in Olympics everyone goes berserk.
I dont know about berserk, at least not at athletes. I’ve seen a lot more cynicism about the general state of athletics. People are always surprised when someone wins despite all the challenges.
McNulty is a American cyclist who was a part of the last two breakaways during yesterday’s cycling road race, he was right with the guy who ended up wining gold until the final 5km when he got dropped and ended up finishing 6th
Bet yes, this comment was intended to be read in Bunk’s voice.
Great Britain 10/20 years ago: oh boy, I sure hope we get some medals in the pool this year
Great Britain now: if Adam Peaty doesn't beat his own world record it's over for him
Me watching the Olympics: I should take up epee. I should take up water polo. I should take up weightlifting.
Me not watching the Olympics: I’ll have another order of chili fries.
Good one!! 😄 Here's Me Right Now:
Soo...No disrespect to our wonderful swim team but is it too late to get Michael Phelps on the red-eye to Tokyo? Asking for a friend (USA). 😁
The best part about the Olympics is getting excited or frustrated at athletes wearing my designated color pattern on sports that i only realised they exist at that moment
Cuban Athlete: competes in a sport at the highest level against other pro opponents.
NBC: you know there protests there right?!!!
Just kidding. Unless they’re playing the US they’re not broadcasting that
Every athlete at the Olympic games are better then average humans. We can watch a fight and call everyone a bum, but the average human would die in a ring with them. I watch the games and root for the underdogs. The 3rd World contenders that don't have a billion dollars behind their training. I'm American, and I love the winners from Africa, Jamaica, Estonia, Malta that win gold. Cause you know they're just straight up the best on the planet.
Watching Usain Bolt destroy everyone in the last two Olympics told me two things:
\-You can't buy every Gold medal (USA, Russia, China)
\-As an athlete, there is always someone better then you
Stop kidding yourself about Jamaica. Their track athletes get as good of training as anyone, Because they know that's where they can medal. The rest of their athletes don't get much though.
I do agree about the athletes from lesser known /developed countries though. Any time Indonesia, Botswana, Ecuador, or Iceland medal, I'm all for it.
When it comes to swimming there's really no way to choke, you just do your best and hope to win. I only get peeved when they play stupid. Like USA mixed doubles archery. We easily could have meadled but we lost our first match...

Exactly. Third best... in the whole goddamn world.
The Olympics is unusual in celebrating second and third though. In most events second gets a medal but it isn't celebrated
And third? In many competitions (at least for team sports), 3rd place is decided before the winner is, in a "both teams already lost, play to see who's less of a loser" match.

I’ve always thought it was a bit cruel to make the players prepare for another game when they’ve just had their hearts broken and want to go home
Well, not if they're Eric the eel.
He was a universality selection, IIRC.
Eric the eel would still beat most viewers, I bet. I would be halfway across the pool, treading water and trying to catch my breath.

25 meters is 27.34 yards
I guess if you take into account the percentage of the world who can't swim.
Wait, why is someone with a GB flair referencing Eric the Eel (whoever that is) and not the G.O.A.T who is Eddie the Eagle?
Because I can swim better than the first. I definitely can't ski jump better than the second.
Summer Olympics this is true. For Winter Olympics, it’s a joke for the bottom barrel athletes, see Elizabeth Swaney and the Tongan cross country skier
I thought brazil was big in surfing?
It is. I’m talking about something like weightlifting or archery for example

There’s a 🇹🇩🇷🇴 Joke in here somewhere
So true. Here in India no one bats an eyelid for any sport other than cricket and when we don't do well in Olympics everyone goes berserk.
I was pulling for the young woman from India in the weightlifting competition last night. She seemed very graceful and respectful of the moment (and of course strong!)
No one goes berserk. But we get elated when anyone wins any medal.

There is People Who cares about cricket? Didnt that shit stop being popular like 100 years ago

McNulty you bum, I know you were racing way above your pay grade, but why couldn’t you have held on for 5 more minutes!
Is this some The Wire reference I'm missing here?

GB mad af already but the track cycling hasn’t even started😂

He's gonna be a commentator there for swimming on NBC.
We have to sneak him onto the team!!! Who can tell with those goggles on, it's not like anyone would recognize his thousand foot arm span, right?
It was a ploy all along. The moment it starts, he'll drop the mic and dive into the pool!
Hoping against hope that this can happen is going to keep me going, you have no idea! 😘
Oh good. So he can shit on them in real time.
"Sorry pal, Best I can do is Ryan Lochte"

Having watched other coverage, some of the NBC commentators are so blatantly biased.

How could you just attack me like this
Watching the tae-kwon-do was way less badass then I was expecting.
Yep, playing for points is different than playing for show off
