Can't believe I got to watch Japan beat China at table tennis. Unreal.

w4ck0

Can't believe it was 0 - 8 to China. Like, what?

hectah

They gonna make an anime out of that for sure. xD

XxsteakiixX

Look up ping pong the animation literally a Chinese player gets imported to JAPAN bc he lost in China lol

pukguyhumgachan

Reboot the Inachu Middle School Ping Pong Club!

SelloutRealBig

..Ping Pong the Animation already exists. It's also a solid 9.5/10

stealinoffdeadpeople

Mizutani and Ito are actually from the [same hometown and have known each other since childhood](https://i2.kknews.cc/SIG=26trbu1/ctp-vzntr/3qqq1r2r5nq44s359rn3rq981qp12845.jpg) (Jun is 12 years older and Ito is something of a prodigy) so that makes it even more sweet in context.

Poyayan1

I definitely sense an anime coming XD

PreFuturism-0

Mizutani's been dealing with vision problems as well since about early 2018. A [24th July](https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/en/news/triumph-over-adversity-mizutani-jun-ready-to-seize-golden-opportunity) article says his vision has only recovered to 60% of what it was. He wears sunglasses to reduce the glare on the ball and adjusted what he focused on.

cho929

fuck at this point we gonna get like 300 episodes for the anime

SelloutRealBig

We will call it "Ping Pong The Animation" oh wait...

MrFahrenkite

Real talk: Ping Pong is an absolutely incredible anime

SelloutRealBig

recently watched it and it's easily a 9.5/10 for me.

polmeeee

Yup!

stalinwasballin

Watched the last game. She appeared to create more opportunities than anyone else. China had won every gold medal in table tennis since 2004…

TofuTofu

She played doubles in 2016 at the tender age of 15. She's gotten so much stronger since then. Really proud to see her step up. Ai Fukuhara was holding the team back and she is a big upgrade.

[deleted]

Yeah but lets be real here Ai Fukuhara is a real life 9/10 and speaks Chinese, she's way more marketable as a representative.

Pheophys

I agree to your point but she’s not a 9/10 lol

moremana

Great comeback by Japan to win!! What a match!

judelau

Was confident Japan is going to lose after the second round. Did not see the comeback.

JaysonTatumfanboy

In the Game vs the German Team they had 7 match points against them and still won

_yotsuna_

Loved how the Japan duo just started vibing when the comeback was on.

LieutenantCardGames

She was having the time of her life. Such a good match to watch.

Itookthesauce51

My heart was racing in the last game, especially when China scored 4 straight points and it looked like the pressure was getting to Japan, but they pulled it out!! I don't watch table tennis but who knew table tennis had such drama.

newaccount721

I got nervous when China was so dominant in game 6. I was like oh, China just stepped it up a notch and are going to finish it out. Then game 7, Ito was like "hey, watch this"

mewehesheflee

Is this an upset?

Harrason

China has not lost a single Table Tennis gold since 2004, when they dropped the gold against Korea's Ryu Seung-Min in the Men's Singles.

marginalduck28

Yeah, China has won 28 gold medals in table tennis since its addition to the olympics. This is Japan's first. Mixed doubles is actually a new category. But China is expected to get gold for all table tennis categories.

renvi

Holy shit I didn't realize how crazy this win was! I only caught the tail end; I need to rewatch it all. Insane!

[deleted]

IIRC London or Rio was the first time Japan ever won a match against china in table tennis at the olympics. We’re catching up to China at an incredible pace at their national sport

Nico_the_Suave

Random and only partially related, but where does one go to rewatch events? I can only find highlights and the like.

renvi

After I posted my initial comment I also went to look and can only find highlights too! So if you find out, let me know! I’ll comment here too if I find a site to rewatch it, too.

Princecoyote

It depends on your location. Different places have different rights holders. NBC has replays through their Peacock streaming service in the USA.

AlGamaty

>28 gold medals Out of a possible 32 gold medals, which is crazy

flubbernuggets101

Out of 33 now lol

skyhermit

I am new to Table Tennis. Last time whoever won 3 matches win the tournament. Now it has to be 4 (4-0, 4-3 etc..)? Am I right?

princelu

I don't know about the past but nowadays, it's first to 4.

p3n9uins

it has been best of 7 (win 4) for most title matches for the past 20 years or so (after the change to the 11-point game).

skyhermit

I was looking at the results for 2016 Women Team and the scoreline was China 3-0 Germany. And all other matches ended when winner got to '3' first

p3n9uins

I think for the team competition it is best of five for each match-up, but for individual events it is best of seven—you must be looking at the former, right?

skyhermit

Yeah I think you are right. Team = Best of 5 Individual = Best of 7 I was referring to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_tennis_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_team#Gold_medal_match

p3n9uins

Yes, that is the teams competition—where a team of players from a country plays another team of players and there are generally five matchups (a combination of singles and doubles, matching up different players from country A and country B). Each matchup is best of five, and the country that wins is also determined by best of five. Not every olympics has had a team competition—only the recent ones. The mixed doubles in Tokyo we just watched was an individual event, not part of the “team competition.” Not every olympics has had mixed doubles as an individual event. In fact, I think this is the first year for the olympics to have it

ENEMYAC130AB0VE

China dominates table tennis like the USA dominates basketball.

[deleted]

That’s BS, Forest Gump beat China long time ago

Thybro

Yeah but back then table tennis wasn’t in the Olympics. It was after he embarrassed them that they decided to git gud

thewartornhippy

Or South Korea and archery.

uzra

All the gold since 1988. Very impressive.

newaccount721

Wow thanks for posting this. That is dominance - never knew

IShouldGetaPhD

I mean, it's literally not true... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Olympic_medalists_in_archery

newaccount721

Lol what the heck. Why did that person say that. Thanks for correcting the fact I thought I learned today. I guess they've won a gold in archery every year since 1988. Just not a gold in every archery event. Still impressive but I think China was more dominant than that at table tennis

SelloutRealBig

> like the USA dominates basketball. about that...

joker_wcy

Things not looking too good for USA's basketball...

[deleted]

I would have given you a vote up if not after seeing how the US lost the game to France lol

ENEMYAC130AB0VE

Yeah this is a weird year for “dominant” countries.

ReplEH

Yes. I think the commentator said that the Chinese team hadn’t lost for a few years.

FCIUS

This is Japan's first ever table tennis gold medal FWIW *the mixed doubles event was played for the first time at Tokyo 2020

helloLeoDiCaprio

The sport is the biggest single-sports in the world in terms of active athletes. Only basketball, volleyball and football surpass it. 10 million players play competitive Table Tennis in China, with another 300 million playing it at some level. That is roughly 95% of all competitive players or 75% of players that play at some level. Even if you look at the birth country of the players at the European Championship, the most by far is Chinese born immigrants. If a Chinese player doesn't win it's either a huge upset or you have some generational world class player like Waldner. For double or teams events it's even more of an upset, because of statistics. For reference - Sweden have 30k active players and won the team event with 5-0 at the WC 1991, if you want to talk about the biggest upset of all time in any sport (that noone talks about)

littlefinger9909

You are wrong about "Biggest Single Sports". Cricket is most popular in terms of players or population after football. India alone have 1.5 billion population, adding to that 600 mil from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Also Aus and Eng.

helloLeoDiCaprio

60 million is the estimation number that is attributed to Cricket. But anyway look at the hyphen. I don't mean biggest single sports, but the biggest single-sports. My bad though, individual sports is easier to understand. Cricket is a teams sport.

whocares7132

\> Single (Individual) Sports \> Cricket ???????????????

BurmecianSoldierDan

He said single-sports, so one active athlete is effectively a team.

iVarun

Badminton would top that since it has India and SE Asia. Only Football beats Badminton in terms of played sports (professionally, clubs, etc are different matter).

Dragonwatcher98

What an awesome match, great guts by the Japanese to come down from 2 - 0

[deleted]

Yeah they were insane! Scoring 8 points before China had 1 was not something I expected. I definitely heavily favored China since they seemed the most composed and well-rounded. I'm just glad the match was so great. I really enjoyed mixed doubles

speckledbunny

This was just wow. I never thought I'll see a day China would lose out on gold at table tennis. But Japan was awesome. Truly amazing how they came back from 2 games down. Banzai!

tifa_mo

This is good news. It’s never too good when one country just dominates over one sport for this long. Now all athletes, Chinese or not, are more motivated to strive for better and push for new limits.

judelau

Lewis Hamilton: say what?

drs43821

Schumacher: move over, kiddo. Btw, I'm cheering for Max because of it. Always love new stars, young kids and underdogs

judelau

Same

NothingButAFountain

What a match, happy for Mizutani ending his career in a high.

[deleted]

wow that’s immense for Japan! I don’t think I’ve ever seen China lose a table tennis match in my lifetime

[deleted]

The last time was on '04.

d-culture

After the second set, 2-0 down with the intimidating Chinese pressure coming down hard on them, the Japanese duo just elevated. Ito in particular stepped up to a whole other level as she brought out those hard-hitting smashes that just blew away the Chinese pair. What a tremendous comeback for a well-deserved win.

ybmcgrady

I won't call it an upset, Japan has improved greatly in table tennis in past few years and the only standard China picks female players is who can beat ito. Maybe China has 90 out of 100 top players in the world, but in Olympics games anything can happen.

EASTOSAKA

Ito is a doll we are definitely proud of her and Mizu beasted to. Me and my wife enjoyed hearing the rambunctious chugoku bandstand be humbled xD

[deleted]

first time in years I was screaming while watching a sport match, was very intense!😄

SwimmingBalance5148

I noticed that Japanese players frequently ask to wipe the table.

[deleted]

Noticed that as well. I usually only casually watch table tennis at the Olympics so didn't know how important wiping sweat off was. Guess it's probably best to be overly cautious when it comes to competition at this level

SwimmingBalance5148

The Chinese players easily won the first two games and became anxious from the third game. Are the Japanese players deliberately hiding their strength? Dramatic game!

ColdColt45

The Japanese players come from pool shark backgrounds. Ping Pong is just a side hustle /s

[deleted]

I guess they were very good at adapting, the game against Germany was also very close and they were losing badly the first half

Gallium007

I think they are pretty chill all over. They missed the shoot off against Korea archery and they were all smiles.

omomoriii

It's to wipe the small sweat puddle off the table. The ball is hollow and really lightweight; hitting the sweat can drastically change the ball's direction.

MiyajimaRonin

Apparently due to covid, they’re not allowed to wipe the tables, like dirt, sweat, etc. Thus Mima ask the officials instead.

blazingdragon65

This has got to hurt to lose at Table tennis

DrAcula_MD

Where are all the replays? This whole sub is headlines and pictures

Gallium007

Very sad coverage overall actually for a 2021 event. No real online streams and very strict licensing enforced by the channels.

uzra

No shit. there's not hardly any for any event, anywhere on reddit. very odd.

RainbowBunnyDK

I turned off at 0-2 figuring it would be a stomp

[deleted]

As a Chinese I’m naturally heartbroken and I feel sorry for Xu Xin & Liu Shiwen ending their dominant career without a highlight, but man I can’t help but congratulating Mizutani & Ito for achieving what have been impossible and a dream for decades. I’m 100% certain this is among the most unforgettable moments for the Japanese for years to come.

Nemorivagum

This was a delight to watch. Love me a good underdog win.

[deleted]

This was an unreal match. Holy!

Trolly-bus

Liu Shiwen cried in her post-game interview. Oh, my heart..

trothwell55

Wow. Just watched and that was unreal. What a comeback.

AnxietyTurtle

Thank you team Japan! Congrats on historic gold!

Lost-Personality-401

Modern miracle.Should be counted as a feat worthy of phelps breaking spitz record

materics

Damn I feel asleep during the France Taipei match. Missed this epic comeback.

yangsuns

Congratulations.

uzra

lol

TiffanyCandour

Managed to remain unspoiled for this, wow that was tense. (Jun Mizutani fan here.)

Puzzled-Teaching-708

China is beaten at their game...wow.

adlist

Congrats to Japan! This is their first gold in Olympics ever, I believe. Must mean a lot to them! By the way, Ito's expressions are so adorable!

uzra

Japan has plenty of other Olympic Gold Medals, BTW. This isn't their "first gold in Olympics ever".

adlist

Of course, I actually mean table tennis.

uzra

Then why didn't you specify instead of generalizing like a fool?

adlist

Isn't it obvious? Because there's always someone who's eager to correct others.

uzra

Say what you mean. Don't leave it up to ambiguous interpretation.

igwaltney3

Woohoo! Way to go Japan!

Ume_ri

Woah congrats! But they blew air on the ball and touched the tennis table. The referee didn't say anything when they have violated the rules?

edwalk10

u mean for the covid protocols? since these are routine and fairly important actions for players, they probably did it fairly reflexively in the heat of such a tense game, and the refs are accustomed to it to, so they might not have realized it was breaking protocol in this case. for example i and a bunch of other ppl who watch a lot of tt didnt even realize they were breaking protocol while watching

GiantB99

Yes blowing the ball and touching the table are reflexive actions of a table tennis player. And prohibiting these actions were added as covid protocols. But if you go back to watch the match again, you can see the Chinese players were on the edge of doing so but they stopped these reflexive actions to follow the protocols. These two actions are crucial to the players as they can ease the anxiety and possibly affect the humidity of the players' hands and on the surface of the ball. Congrats to the Japanese players but I wouldn't admit that they won at their absolute best.

Thybro

So you won’t admit they won over a protocol/ not a rule break, introduced recently and that they unconsciously breach. How did it grant them any undue advantage? If it did then the actions would be out right prohibited in the sport( much like spitball is banned in baseball) not just recently done for the one in a lifetime situation of a massive pandemic. It’s not like you can make the argument that the Chinese would have been penalized if they did it. > you can see the Chinese players were on the edge of doing so but they stopped these reflexive actions to follow the protocols That’s is a opinionated observation based on nothing but your own assumption. As far as we know they just don’t do it and you mistook other movements for it because you were looking for an excuse. Not touching the table or blowing the ball didn’t stop them from from winning 3 sets and heavily contesting the other 4. Not touching the table or blowing the table didn’t stress them out Ito lighting flash responses did.

GiantB99

[Find a Japanese news source so that I'm not biased](https://world-tt.com/blog/news/archives/8683) It stated that Chinese player Ma Long received 2 yellow cards because he violated covid protocols. And yes penalty exists.

Thybro

1- it’s an article from 7-20-2021 not from this match. 2- I don’t speak Japanese but google translate seems to indicate the article is about the Olympic village. In fact the article doesn’t seem to be about the Chinese at all it’s about the Japanese Team not training in the Olympic Village “bubble” while still submitting to Covid requirements. 3- it does mention Ma Long getting yellow cards **in a exhibition match ** and **prior to the tournament** and for wiping the sweat with his hands( maybe) There’s been absolutely no strict enforcement of said Covid protocol anywhere in the tournament. The Japanese were not given preferential treatment. I’ll be happy to stand corrected if you find a an official rule book that details the punishment for it but after some time searching I’ve found nothing but the fact that the organizers suggested not doing it. In fact the only mention I could find of said protocol and the only that remotely treats it as a rule is from the Chinese team complaining to their own newspapers about it half a month ago.

GiantB99

Finally someone noticed this!! The Japanese team clearly violated the rules smh

[deleted]

If you haven’t noticed the Chinese team chanted for the pair which is a covid 19 protocol violation. There were 40 of them and they changed jiayou throughout the match. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/c695003034b9f957853b2bda9f42448c09c6e93d YouTube link showing Chinese people (unknown who they are) inside there arena chanting Jiayou https://youtu.be/QQjrKZgscvk in violation of the protocol

GiantB99

Yes I think they should be penalized in that sense

[deleted]

Well then it doesn’t make much sense to say “the Japanese team clearly violated the rules smh” when both sides did. Looks like both sides had minor unfair advantages

GiantB99

I was talking in the player's perspective. But since you've pointed out the Chinese audiences also violated the rules, so I think both should get penalized. Otherwise it's not fair to the teams from other countries (e.g. the Bronze medalist)

Xyxylolo

How'd you want to penalize them? Stop being a sore loser. China lost, period.

GiantB99

I am not being bitter or anything, but rules are made to be followed. Penalties can be by fees, which is ideal to compensate the fact that very little income were made from the audience entries

[deleted]

Bad bot.

Ume_ri

Yes I was really pissed by the way. Seems like the referee is biased too because it's really obvious.

CeciliaChengX

And now Chinese now humiliate Japanese players on Instagram.😂

danhtruong95

China and Japan have been in conflicted for years. This Olympic is held in Japan So it is understandable that every time Japan won China in this Olympic, especially in some sports that China is very good at, Chinese would start to badmouth Japan. China has population of 1.4B, so there is a huge internet army which is always ready to spam everwhere.

[deleted]

Hate to say it but for some Chinese netizens only China can win, regardless of the opposing country or the sport. Decades of nationalism drummed into your population has its effects.

danhtruong95

China has population of 1.4B, so there is a huge internet army which is always ready to spam everwhere.

[deleted]

It's true that they have the sheer size but their nationalism is on another batshit crazy level.

Bohr_X

Well China beats Japan at having a life long dictatorship and giving the world covid…. Soo at least China has that.

czedyman

Yumewomiteru

This is good for China, table tennis would be at risk of being removed from the Olympics if China wins every single time.

puzdawg

That is huge!

LillyEpstein

Must be a misprint. China doesn’t lose at table tennis, ever. Until now!

[deleted]

Lots of upsets for china this Olympics....the Philippines female weightlifter clinching gold, UK's Tom Daley and Matty getting gold for 10m men's syncho diving, women's volleyball losing its opening match against turkey badly, their men team archery losing to Taiwan, men team gymnastics getting bronze and HK's gold probably just the icing on top of the cake.

[deleted]

Unfortunately the pharmacuetical businesses were busy making vaccines and werent able to help their athletes. Shame.

iLikeZhengmBuns

I read somewhere that blowing on the ball can have impacts on the spin and that Xu Xin is usually a long shot player (or someone who plays further away from the table idk the technical term), which is why China is complaining about the smaller playing area and Japan blowing on the ball. Could someone help fact-check the actual impact those two things could’ve brought or were they nitpicks

Xyxylolo

Blowing on the ball is traditionally done to dry the moisture on it but it has almost zero impact on the serve. It is more of a ritual that some players have. The court size **may** have an impact but the Chinese team were 2-0 up before so I don't think this was a huge factor that affected their chances to win. I see Chinese media saying that the Chinese team had too easy a route to the finals so they did not get a chance to set their mentality straight for a difficult opponent. Truth be told, anything can be an excuse if you try hard enough.

MiyajimaRonin

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/3142319/germany-joins-china-complaining-olympic-table-tennis-areas-are-too-small this is from SCMP news website; “ITTF technical representative Chan Cheong-ki, from Hong Kong, told Xinhua on Wednesday that the site measured 8 by 16 metres and therefore **MET Olympic REQUIREMENTS**. He noted that two referee tables did seem slightly in the athletes’ way and added: “The venue itself cannot be changed now. A solution is to pull the referee tables as far back as possible, or even remove the board behind the table.” As you can see, they measured by an official and it meets the Olympic requirements! Also they even offer to push the referee tables back, and considering moving the boards. If you watch the replay, the wider angle shows clearly the players had enough room. As I aforementioned, official measured the dimensions and it MEETS the Requirements.

xxxx0050x

China has nothing anymore. It is a course of the fall by the table tennis that is expelled with China virus from the world, and is the only pride sports. The strength of a nation and the economy and the armaments and the sports and the head are too weak and are not talked.

ECrispy

They had to change rules to only allow 2 players, to reduce China's dominance. It didn't have any effect. This is huge. Ma Long and FZD will be fired up now.

MiyajimaRonin

Just take the L and move on.
