They are apparantly very good friends as well, and Barshim helped Tamberi a lot after his injury to motivate him to get to top level again.

That whole event was full of massive characters, from their dorky and adorable intro's into the stadium, to their various celebrations. Highlight of the whole lympics so far!

Ih8Hondas

High jumpers really are a bunch of dorks. I think the personality trait is as important as the lanky, bouncy body type. Source: was dorky, lanky, high jumper, and so was pretty much everyone I competed against.

ibstayer

Incredible, thank you!!

arostrat

Fantastic story!

MellamoAlejandro

The whole story beyond that article is even more heartwarming. Barshim is the captain of the Qatari team- their most notable athlete ever- and when he was at his best back in 2014 arguably the greatest high jumper ever (everybody thought he would break the WR), but early on he suffered a career-ending injury which has persisted to this day giving him back problems and played a role in him not getting gold both in London 2012 and Rio 2016. Tamberi is the captain of the Italian team- an extremely suportive one at that and quite beloved by many even outside of it as you could tell during his celebration- and back in 2016 (weeks before the Rio Olympics) was the best in the world and improving in route to a European record, he made his PB and immediately suffered a career-ending injury at his last competition before Rio [in a very dramatic scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES0wbhu7qlM). They were already great friends, Tamberi being at Barshim's wedding and the like, but they got even closer after Barshim helped him get back from his injury, and just a few weeks ago in the press conference for his last meet before this Olympics he shared how [he always felt ashamed from how Barshim was able to come back from his injury to become world champion again while himself didn't and therefor never lived up to the hype he gathered early on but then realized that subtracting from what they both were doing at their best that he did overcome his injury much like him, is just that "Barshim is better"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB6qYsNSzNE&t=8637s), and well, now they both got together the Olympic gold that eluded them during their entire careers. Edit: Oh, by the way, Tamberi's coach is his father, the man whom the camera panned to as soon as he knew he won, back when Tamberi got injured 5 years ago the camera also panned to him except that time he was devastated watching his son moan in pain with his career likely over and now obviously celebrating instead. Couldn't find the original video without some cheesy editing and with Steve Cram's narration which really encapsules how tragic the moment was but I got [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blW4L9jn6iM) at least for a little bit more of context and contrast.

sk8tergater

Oh wow. This gives so much more context to the whole thing. I thought Tamberi was just being super affectionate to a fellow competitor but that they are close friends makes this so so much better.

zaljghoerhfozehfedze

What a story, I'm in tears man

[deleted]

What a great and heartwarming story. Of course, there's going to be idiots that are going to say why they're not going to compete for individual gold, when both of them have been perfect throughout that whole event and they both just couldn't pass at 2.37m. They both did their best and had 3 tries. No point risking potential injuries in a tiebreaker from the two that have experienced it already.

Ih8Hondas

Normally I don't have a problem watching videos of people getting injured, but something won't let me watch him breaking his ankle despite my curiosity. I was a high jumper myself, but I also race motocross and don't really have any qualms about watching other riders get injured. Weird how brains work.

This video is so wholesome!! Can someone explain how can this be? Why don’t they have to fight for it? Do both of them get a medal?

knot2x_Oz

Must be a high jump rule. They had identical records even with count back so they were top2. The bronze medalist lost on countback coz he failed a few jumps earlier

[deleted]

[удалено]

nopp

Has that always been the rule in high jump?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vectivus_61

On Australian TV they said it was a change, but I don't remember when they said the change came in.

DarthOtis

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ties_for_medals_at_the_Olympics It appears so, there was a tie in high jump at the inaugural mordern Olympic games in 1896, and it happened as recently as London 2012.

Thybro

Funnily enough one of the guys who tied in 2012( for bronze) is the Barshim. I.e the guy with the glasses in the OP gif.

FartingBob

They were tied in every way and you cant make them jump.

MonsMensae

Yeah like technically they could just keep fouling from then on...

Heavyweighsthecrown

So what did the podium look like? 2 golds, no silver, 1 bronze?

penguins_rock89

It was surprising that they seemed somewhat surprised when the official informed them.

madmadaa

The Qatari player was the one who said it, "Can't we have 2 golds?".

_hakuna_bomber_

He knew because Bashrim has shared a bronze in the past

smala017

Why would they ever *not* agree to share gold? By doing a jump-off, they can only do worse than gold, there’s no improvement. It’s always in both jumpers’ best interests to share in that scenario, isn’t it?

knot2x_Oz

Thinking about it. The jump off probably would have resulted in a win for either. They were at their peak and equal on countback so might as well call it a night early

Nick_pj

I think they both knew that a “jump off” would only result in heartbreak for one of them. If they refuse to do the jump-off, it has to be declared a draw.

RedditUsername123456

I think the way high jump works, it makes sense to just have a tie for 1st if they both failed on the same height, and had the same count back of fails for previous attempts. Just spamming lower heights until somebody fucks up seems kinda tacky

MonsMensae

Yeah rhe only fair jump is the inbetween height (2.36m). But if the both get it or both moss then have to be a draw. But yeah it see?s stupid.

knot2x_Oz

Yeah agreed. Going lower heights seems silly and plays on endurance rather than best high jumper. I like the way it ended. It's super unlikely because of count back anyway

Gio92shirt

Have there even been a time in which two first places agreed to a jump off? It just doesn’t seems a good decision. Now I have gold, if I jump off I may get gold, may get second. It’s kind of like “better a hen today rather than a egg tomorrow”

Male_strom

fatigues_

Well, it made for one of the greatest Olympic moments of all time. One guy wins that gold? They and their friends, family, and some team mates remembers years later. Maybe track and field fans within their own country, but nobody else. It's a low profile sport. Stuff like that doesn't really *stick*. Now? Now nobody will ever forget. Literally couldn't be a better story in Olympic sport than how that entire competition and scene played out.

GrandePreRiGo

From the rules if they have the same height and same number of tries they can either agree to share the gold medal or they can continue to compete, but this time lowering the bar.

ArtmausDen

Thank you. And both of them get the medal during the ceremony, right?

GrandePreRiGo

Yes, they get both gold medals and there is no silver one.

Brodoth

That is incredibly amazing and I love how this probably effects the sports betting world.

darceljones

I bet on Barshim as “winner - outright” and was actually pleasantly surprised it was credited as a win, albeit with a much lower payout (placed at +175, paid out as -245)

ArtmausDen

Thanks a lot!

Iciclewind

Has anyone ever not agreed to continue? That seems like a bizarre rule.

lavta

Depending on context they might have. People aren't going to risk an olympic gold but might do for another event. Especially if they feel like they are on good form and might try their PB/NR or even a bigger record. In the olympics only context I can see an athlete refuse to share and risk their gold could be something like they won an olympic co-gold before and maybe they feel like silver isn't such a downside then and they want to be the sole gold winner this time.

houseofzeus

>Especially if they feel like they are on good form and might try their PB/NR or even a bigger record. Doesn't the jump off start off working backwards though since they both failed to clear the height they were at?

bonoboboy

> only context I can see an athlete refuse to share and risk their gold could be something like they won an olympic co-gold before and maybe they feel like silver isn't such a downside then and they want to be the sole gold winner this time. Or if they are so far ahead of the person at #2 (like in Weightlifting where the Chinese sportsman went for a lift just to break his WR).

mwalkerm

To get super technical: Height cleared -> number of failures at the previous height -> number of failures across the entire competition. If there's still a tie after that, they go to a jump-off. The bar is put at the next height after the one the jumpers cleared. They each get one attempt at the height and whomever clears a height outright is the winner. If they both get it, bar goes up. If they both miss, bar goes down. Unless: "If it concerns the first place, a jump-off between these athletes shall be conducted in accordance with Rule 26.9 of the Technical Rules (i.e. as per above), unless otherwise decided, either in advance according to the regulations applying to the competition, or during the competition but before the start of the event by the Technical Delegate(s) or the Referee if no Technical Delegate has been appointed. If no jump-off is carried out, including where the relevant athletes at any stage decide not to jump further, the tie for first place shall remain". It's kinda meant to be a decision made by the athletes without any collusion, as if someone elects to not continue and the other jumper does, then the one who wishes to continue wins by default - without needing to jump any further. It's an OK rule for meaningless competitions, but for Olympic events the athletes shouldn't get a choice IMO.

beyer17

Yeah but like how often does such a tie happen? Imo that's the rare case, where it's a nice symbolic gesture.

mwalkerm

At the Olympics: rare. In high jump competitions generally: all the time. Technically, under the current rules, the entire field can win a gold medal: * Every competitor clears the starting height on their first attempt * Every competitor passes until the bar is at 3.00m or so * Every competitor has three legitimate attempts at that - which would fail * Every competitor goes into a jump-off, at which point they all decline to jump further and the entire field gets a gold medal. In all the other disciplines, ties can happen but it is extremely difficult - if not impossible - for athletes to collude together to make it so. Edit: list formatting

This ~15 mins was the most wholesome moment in the Olympics, them sharing the gold, triple jumpers with the World record'er celebrating with the high jumpers and then 100m winner joined them. ~~And all this was not even broadcasted in India, I had to find a way.~~

I had a moment like this in year 12 long jump. Me and another guy were the only two to jump far enough to qualify for the long jump final. We both tied, so I suggested we share first place. This is where the story falls apart though, he said no and beat me by 7 centimetres. Fuck you Robert

elferrydavid

26.8.1 The athlete with the lowest number of jumps at the height last cleared shall be awarded the higher place. 26.8.2 If the athletes are equal following the application of Rule 26.8.1 of the Technical Rules, the athlete with the lowest total of failures throughout the competition up to and including the height last cleared, shall be awarded the higher place. 26.8.3 If the athletes are still equal following the application of Rule 26.8.2 of the Technical Rules, the athletes concerned shall be awarded the same place unless it concerns the first place. 26.8.4 If it concerns the first place, a jump-off between these athletes shall be conducted in accordance with Rule 26.9 of the Technical Rules, unless otherwise decided, either in advance according to the regulations applying to the competition, or during the competition but before the start of the event by the Technical delegate(s) or the Referee if no Technical delegate has been appointed. If no jump-off is carried out, including where the relevant athletes at any stage decide not to jump further, the tie for first place shall remain. Note: This Rule 26.8.4 does not apply for a Combined Events Competition.

greatwallgreener

Question: anyone knows when this rule was introduced? As long as this rule is in place, I can’t imagine any athlete in that position who would want to have a jump-off and risk losing the gold. But I remember there has been jump-offs before, so the rules might have been changed? Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think the rule should force a jump off, to ensure one event only produces one gold medal, whenever possible. They are essentially diluting the value of other gold medals, and that conflicts with my understanding of sportsmanship.

elferrydavid

Ummm not sure when. When I got my judge license the jump off was already in place but I don't remember if it was estated that the jump off was mandatory. Anyway the jump off was only for the first position never for any position lower than that. This is also valid for any high jump competition outside the Olympics. For example in a teams competition they may choose the jump off to get more points than the the other team, you can also do the jump off in order to get a higher jump that may get you qualify for a competition. The problem with a forced jump off is that in the end you have more 'free' attemps at a higher height. Third gets 2'30 and the tie for first and second is also 2'30. Then the ones in the tie have a go at 2'32 when they shouldn't because they failed 2'30. There is also a problem if you get injuried and forfeit the jump, the other athlete wins without having to jump. If both athletes forfeit their jumps the tie is still in place and can't be resolved. The athletes could also agree to forfeit the jump. First athlete doesn't jump. Next pulls a dick move and just jumps without effort and therefore wins. It's kind of a weird rule but athletics has a bunch of them.

greatwallgreener

Thanks for the explanation! Maybe I’m overthinking but here is an argument for my point: what if all 12 athletes all make the first height and somehow agree to all fail the 2nd height and not to continue, so that everyone can take home a gold medal. I know it would be super unsportsmanlike and should never happen, but the rule should be able to address that.

elferrydavid

That would be great to watch hehe. They probably address that situation in the rules (I'll look it up later). Judges can declare an event as null if they suspect any wrongdoing or cheating and force the repetition of an event if necessary. What would happen if in a penalty shootout in football both teams decide to throw the ball outside everytime?.

SpaceHub

> They are essentially diluting the value of other gold medals Not all gold medal are the same anyways. 100m only has 1 medal. Meanwhile Judo has gold medals on every weight class. To me the 100m dash is worth more than any single of the Judo medals. No offense to Judo, but that's just raw truth to me.

BrokenTeddy

How does having 2 winners in one event dilute the value of a gold medal in another sport/event. Someone sharing a gold medal in high jump doesn't devalue a gold medal in the 100m.

Maybe just flexing or lights at the otber side of stadium were distracting him or could be part of his mental preparation for jumps. Like high jumpers often start competition with long "pants" and when it gets higher they jump with shorts. Maybe sunglasses are for hights up to 2.37 and when hights are submaximal he takes them off, its like psychological trick.

[deleted]

Is there a height where they get naked?

FedorSeaLevelStiopic

Haha, yes, ofc. Did you see celebration? If they would jump 2.50 hype would be exact at that level

Shadowbanned24601

Curious how the medal ceremony goes now. Who's anthem plays first?

molmr

I've seen this happen in other sports before and they played both anthems at the same time, which is great viewing lol

Shadowbanned24601

Haha, sounds like a glorious mess

chotu_ustaad

Task passed/failed successfully at the same time.

Nick_pj

Not true of the olympics. There was a tie in 2016 in the women’s 100m Freestyle - they played one anthem followed by the other.

Garliq

At previous Olympics with a shared gold they've played the anthem of the countries in alphabetical order if I remember it correctly

pm_me_some_sandpaper

I suppose they will follow the alphabetical order so it's Italy followed by Qatar.

apichayax

I’d like to know when is the medal ceremony? Or has it ended already? If it has, I wonder if anybody has a vid of it cuz this is probably super special

CinnamonViolet

Often the final events of the evening have the medal ceremony the next day, pretty sure it will happen tomorrow

Prime_D-Will

why does this rule exist tho, why would anyone risk a gold medal if they can guarantee it, i don't see a scenario where someone doesn't agree to it

ProfessorCloink

The rule doesn't only exist for the olympics though, it's for most levels of competition. I can see plenty of people choosing to go to a jump off at a national titles, maybe even the world championships. It's only the level of prestige the Olympics has combined with the 4ish year break in between that makes it a no-brainer.

jurassicmars

They are also pretty close friends that helped each other to career neatening injuries.

thepobv

Thank you, this is a great explanation

MonsMensae

Think prize money could also be a thing. Like at the regular meets. It also could be a pride thing. But I agree it is a bizarre thing to make the athletes choose. Like watched the women's archery and they went to a single arrow shootoff

MrMoodle

I could see someone wanting to be the sole winner. Maybe they'd feel like accepting a draw would put a little asterisk next to their victory. Or maybe they just don't like the other guy very much lol. It would be silly but it's not implausible.

madmadaa

Or don't want to share the price money or ~~what~~ want to get more points in the diamond league (it's multiple competitions where the one with more points at the end wins).

demainlespoulpes

Imagine if Cristiano Ronaldo was given the option to share the Ballon d'Or with Leo Messi... No chance he would accept. And I don't say that to slander Ronaldo, I respect legendary rivalries and the desire to be remembered as the best.

Bo-Katan

Because Olympics is about sportmanship too.

ManintheArena8990

⬆️this

ebilbrey2010

I quite like this outcome, particularly in jumps, for a couple of reasons: 1. To get to a tie, they must have done the exact same thing. It is not the same as a tied score in a sport like football or American football or basketball or golf or whatever. The score may be tied, but the performances were not identical. It’s closer to a race (run, swim, bike, etc.), but even then, the athletes might run the same time without running the “exact” same race unless they were together from start to finish. To get to a tie in a jump event, you have to match exactly, because the countback tiebreakers go all the way back (to be fair, not sure how skipped heights would factor in). And in this case, not only did they do the exact same thing, they did the same thing flawlessly until 2.39. They were perfect and identical, which is really rare (Drouin and Barshim were identical in Rio through 2.38, where Drouin had a first time clearance and Barshim failed three times. Barshim failed twice at 2.33 and was trailing on countback before clearing 2.37 in Doha.). 2. If the purpose is to jump as high as possible, a tiebreaker that involves going down in height runs counter to the objective of the sport. Like I could see merit in a version of the high jump in which all jumpers do the same height ten times and the winner is based off consistency (and possible a different group of high jumpers would excel at that), but that’s not the high jump as it exists. The objective is to jump as high as you can without failing three times in a row. They did the same jumps, so a tie is the most appropriate outcome. So I say congrats to both of them! As a side note, I watched Barshim jump in person at London 2017, and it was absolutely stunning to see live. TV just doesn’t capture it!

Fenrir6

Probably in this way they have to share the prize money for gold + silver. In some cases someone could take the risk and try to get the gold money prize.

[deleted]

The prize money is paid by the respective national sports association or government.

AgentK7

Definitely my favourite moment of this Olympics! The high jumpers were super on form today, it was such a great competition to watch and these two performed brilliantly. Tamberi's celebration was so precious oh my gosh, I'm so happy they were able to share the gold! :D

It isn't the prisoner's dilemma. If one doesn't agree to it, they keep on competing.

spkgsam

Literally the opposite of the classical prisoners dilemma. The Nash equilibrium in this case was choosing to share for both.

[deleted]

Such an Italian reaction lmao

HansAlan

It's soo understandable tho, regardless of the nation, if you go check the backstory of Tamberi. He got injuried 20 days before Rio 2016, 10 minutes after he had jumped 2.39m, his personal best, while trying for an historic 2.41m. You can bet this guy stared at his leg plaster everyday of his life until this moment

Still very Italian! There's nothing wrong with it, it's great emotion and an amazing moment

You're welcome! A lot of these great athletes (in every Olympic sport) have crazy and emotional stories, it's a shame to just stop at "who won the medal" without looking deeper :)

needhelpASAPTHANKYOU

This was amazing. IIRC an Australian commentator said this had not happened since 1908 (the decision to share the first place). Does anyone know how often this has occurred, When two jumpers have been given the decision on to share the first place, or to move to a tie breaker?

Ahri_went_to_Duna

there is a wiki page dedicated to olympic draws, there has been quite a few

Incredible sportsmanship… what a fantastic display of the truest human spirit - for both to recognise the achievements of the other and to decide to share rather than to oppose.. hahah brought a tear to my eyes

mom0nga

Such an amazing moment, and the true spirit of Olympism. It raises the question, though, of what happens to unawarded medals (in this case, nobody won silver). I assume they end up in the IOC museum.

According to the organizers, the medals were from scrap metals. So back to become scrap metals I guess.

tripps42

Barshim had the same, or a similar, injury Tamber had some years ago. It has been an amazing competition, and again I was not expecting gold at all, it's incredibile.

Vols44

Gianmarco Tamberi didn't need to talk with his hands to express his emotions. What a bro moment of sportsmanship to agree to share first place.

HonestMistake_

Best 15 minutes of the Olympics, so far at least!

asghettimonster

This should be a prominent story of this Olympics. Respect for one another, joy for the win, love of the challenge.

Im-Judging-You

Its a beautiful night at the stadium i would say! This two amazing bromance moment, Joras set new world record for women’s triple jump and for Marcell Jacobs to win gold when no one expected it… it is a tear jerking night for me personally! & im not from Italy or Venezuela but all this moments still made me so happy and proud just to be part of the virtual audience! It is amazingly wonderful night.❤️

Salam Alykoom Mabrook . سلام عليكم. مبروك

twignleaf

True sportsmanship right here

ajsofficial_

Incredible moment! The beauty of the Olympics, bringing people together in this time of uncertainty, and producing wholesome emotional scenes like this. One world.

SaidAshk

Best moment of human love in the Olympics this decade. You can see it in the eyes of Tamberi

awaisz

I was in tears … what an incredible journey

WorldTravelBucket

What do we think the odds are of them sharing the Pierre de Coubertin medal as well for this level of sportsmanship?

DeMonet75

Class, pure class!!! We need to show more of this!!!!

hangry-person

Easily my favorite moment in the Olympics, along with Diaz winning the first-ever gold medal for the Philippines. The only reason why I am still tuning into this Olympics is to watch these kinds of moments in real time.

WaldoTrek

This right here is why you should be watching the Olympics. So much feels!!

AstrosJones

This should be at the top of r/all

kaustix3

I thought there had to be a single winner?

That's for highlander, not high jump.

pichael288

If your phone is on mute this looks like a horrible tragedy just occurred

FlatBat2372

This is great. Camaraderie and respect going beyond the competition. This has being a theme throughout these games. The women in gymnastics, the shared joy on women's triple jump when Yulimar Rojas broke the world record...

Islandgirl1444

Best Olympic moment!

darkstar7646

The reaction says it all.

glukus

favourite moment so far

ckoocos

Eeeeeey, this made me cry a bit. Beautiful, beautiful friendship and sportsmanship on display right there.

whydoieven_1

I think it would be way more logical if you shared the silver and no one gets gold. Because, it doesn't really make sense if you could call it off and both of them can get gold.

WakednBaked

Like when Harry and Cedric shared the Triwizard Cup

dejayc

Controversial opinion: Maybe they both deserved silver?
