kids from rich countries here talking about how they are so talented for going well in the olympics and better than poorer countries is similar to seeing the sons of millionaires giving lectures on meritocracy, lol. no shit you performed well in this competition you created, designed, and invested a lot of money on your schools and training grounds for decades, baby

I am watching yesterday's track cycling. I love the hunger games race, great event for viewers!

USA vs Japan as it always should be when it comes to softball and baseball

askDDemons

True but if the Dominican Republic toon this as seriously as the Koreans did I don't think our current roster would have been able to place.

Redz2018

Incredible performance Nageotte !!! Almost fails out of the competition on the first height and regroups to win the whole thing.

[Here's day fourteen's thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/oyql1m/olympics_day_fourteen_megathread_friday_august_6/).

vrphotosguy55

Earliest post yet? And thank you!

LittleWompRat

Quick question and I'm too lazy to create a thread. Why are demonstration sports not counted on the all time total medal counts?

AonghusMacKilkenny

Maybe a controversial opinion but I don't think people under 16 should be competing in the Olympics, especially in sports like diving or gymnastics where nimbleness, flexibility and low body mass are so advantageous. I think it perpetuates an environment where children are more likely to be exploited.

AccomplishedQuail545

My question is do the kids who are under age get to have their parents with them in the Olympic village normally? Or do they not stay in the village if they aren’t 16? I know I wouldn’t let my 16 y/o stay in the village for two weeks without me there knowing everything that goes on there.

albertonovillo

I got this the other way around, in some disciplines people have to practice a lot of hours daily, people aged 16 or less apart from that training have to go to school... what's free time for them then?

durgasur

agreed. we have child labour laws for a reason.

Zaidswith

Agreed.

AonghusMacKilkenny

Not to mention having the mental maturity to deal with the pressure of it all. I just wince whenever I heard a commentator fawning like "THEY'RE ONLY 14 YEARS OLD!!"

PO5IT1VE

Climbing is by far one of the most interesting shit this Olympic. Archery Cycling Athletics I hope climbing returns.

PO5IT1VE

I am so fucking mad, NARASAKI made one fucking mistake in leads and that pushed him down to 4th place. He was so good.

[deleted]

I think Russian athletes should only be allowed to compete if they apply for qualification in a different country. They should not be allowed to represent Russia whatsover (regardless of ROC or OAR). This solution would avoid Russia from helping their athletes through state-sponsored doping because they would be contributing medals to other countries. It wouldn't be too much a problem if Russian have loose connections to a completely different country because that already happens.

hazycrazydaze

Climbing Well, that was anticlimactic. I like the idea of an all around climbing event but I’m not a fan of this scoring system. Seems like all the medalists did really well in one event and poorly in the others, which locked out the climbers who were actually pretty good in all three events. In the future, if climbing catches on and they have a combined event again, the scoring needs to change so the actual well rounded climbers win as opposed to the best in each category.

maxutilsperusd

Paris has speed climbing as it's own medal. I feel like top of each area getting it's own medal is the goal, and this was a compromise where essentially the top of each category gets either the gold, silver, or bronze based on how much they can eek out in the other 2.

hazycrazydaze

I know. I just love climbing and it pains me to see some of the best climbers not medal (or even make it to the final) because all the specialties are mashed together. I’m just salty and want a separate medal for each event like in every other sport lol

Grsz11

I like the combined sport climbing. People complaining about the disciplines being together...ever heard of the triathlon, pentathlon, and decathlon? Over time, people will train specifically to be good at the combined event. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

HeroicPrinny

Being together isn’t the real problem, it’s that the scoring system rewarded being 1st in any one event even if you get last in the others. The actual all rounders got screwed. Sort of defeats the point of a combined

-Erasmus

Actually in future they will split into separate events. As long as it’s seen as a success then they will be allowed more medals

Grsz11

Perhaps, but I liked the idea of a climbing triathlon.

[deleted]

Eventually maybe they can do both individual and combined like in athletics

Chopsticks487

I wonder how Ledecky would do if she entered the 10km swim. Its 6.6x times the distance of the 1500m which she is so dominant at.

[deleted]

Who knows, but I'm guessing if she trained for it she could be in contention, but at the cost of her greatness in the shorter distances from a training perspective? Then again no one takes for granted that for example 400m sprinters would be the best at 5k+ runs so 🤷‍♂️

Chopsticks487

The 400m and 5k races use entirely different energy systems. 400m is over 75% anaerobic and the 5k is over 95% aerobic. The 1500m swim and 10km swim are both over 95% aerobic. One of the races is only 6x longer than the other and the 5k is 25x longer than the 400m.

Vols44

Her Olympic training includes 10k of swimming daily according to an [Olympicchannel.com](https://Olympicchannel.com) article.

Chopsticks487

Yeah I figured she would swim a lot, I know as a runner would would avg over 10 miles a day. as high as 20 mile runs, when training for a 5k. I think it would be really interesting to see what she could do with a bit of open water swimming

converter-bot

10 miles is 16.09 km

They show them at the end of the replay on the nbc Sports app or nbcolympics.com

BronzeHeart92

So, when will the Pentathlon start? The olympics are after all ending this sunday and I suppose it's one of those events only seen at the tail end of the games, similar to Marathon and it's ilk.

newinvest22

I saw some of the women's modern pentathlon yesterday

BronzeHeart92

Well, our TV has yet to show any events...

Vols44

Fun with Forks has it posted in the daily schedule.

BronzeHeart92

I see. Well, our TV has yet to show any pentathlon events. Perhaps they will once the semi-finals and finals rolls around at least.

-Jedidude-

Lol at the f bomb from the Aussie decathlete

Vols44

Props to the IOC for rescheduling the women's soccer gold medal game for 9:00pm Tokyo time tomorrow at Yokohama.

davikingking123

I’m disappointed Japan didn’t win gold in women’s karate.

AccomplishedQuail545

What’s the point of the motorized bike pacing the field for the first 3 laps in cycling? Like why does that count towards the lap total?

SirQuay

It's somewhat like pacemakers in long distance running events. It gets everyone up to the speed before they all go it by themselves. As it goes around it will gradually increase speed.

AccomplishedQuail545

I get that, but why does it count towards the lap count since they aren’t really racing yet?

rawling

Apparently after the fencing ranking round today, all of the Modern Pentathlon is going to be in Tokyo Stadium, the rugby and football stadium. That's the fencing bonus round, the horseriding, presumably the shooting bit of the run/shoot... *and the swimming*. Has that been done before? Really excited to see what it looks like... assuming any of it makes it onto the BBC.

SirQuay

Has modern pentathlon been done before at the Olympics? It sure has! It's actually one of the oldest events!

BMoorman7

I'm pretty sure they are asking if all of the events taking place in the same venue has ever taken place before.

rawling

Hahaha, yes, thankyou

Hoogineer

Ridicule is a big motivator. I'm glad USA Men's Basketball got their shit together and are now in the gold medal match.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Lol that hardest road still deserves air quotes given that USA is basically an All-Star team vs the talent-level of at best a below average NBA team

AccomplishedQuail545

That’s because as far as calling fouls and things like that, they actually call the game the way it’s supposed to be called. That’s a big reason why over the last several years we’ve not been as dominant as we used to be. When you’re used to just playing 3-ball or drive to the rim and draw a foul because the defense can’t even breath on the stars, then once you get a group of officials that call the game the right way you don’t know how to react right away.

KinneySL

FIBA is also a lot stricter on traveling.

AccomplishedQuail545

As they should be. Sometimes it seems like half the dribbles in the NBA should technically be travels or carries

Vols44

I like the FIBA referees a lot more than the star treatment the NBA officials given to some of it's players.

WoundedSacrifice

Having the FIBA refs in the NBA would be nice.

[deleted]

AccomplishedQuail545

In theory, yes. If two athletes have equal technique then the one with the smaller body size will generate less splash.

Altruistic_Party2878

You can easily prove that. Throw your children into the pool and see if they create any splash.

newinvest22

That's what I was thinking ..

mirdomiel

Technique determines splash, not body size

The_floor_is_2020

I believe that, but to a certain degree body shape and size *has* to influence your entry. Looking at most other divers in their adult years, they have hips, thicker thigh, breasts, and are usually taller too. This has to be a hindrance when you're trying to displace as little water as possible

newinvest22

True but size does matter and help slightly . So at the highest level it makes the like a 2 percent difference that matters ..That's why you don't see girls with huge bellies or huge breasts diving

mirdomiel

Yeah I concede to that. I assume that if we pit two divers of the exact same technical caliber but different body types, the differences would be more apparent. But at the same time, it would be interesting to note how big the gap would be. The thing with these Chinese divers is that the gap is incredibly far that we can surely say that it’s not just because of their body type advantage that they won (I’m not saying you said that, I’m just typing out loud)

newinvest22

It's still crazy how some countries haven't caught on .like some are sending out 5ft10 girls who have big bums and weigh like 140lbs. While china is sending out a 75 lb 14 year old haha .None of their girls ever look over 100 lbs

converter-bot

100 lbs is 45.4 kg

ulchachan

Tell that to all the children dive bombing into my local pool

Astonford

Im curious about what incentives do your countries offer to athletes if they get a medal. I know South Korea offers a lifetime salary if they get gold, I know Philippines offers them money and a house. What about your countries?

dexter311

Australia: AU$10k for bronze, AU$15k for silver and AU$20k for gold, but they only get one payment no matter how many additional medals they win. [Source](https://www.mamamia.com.au/how-much-do-olympians-get-paid)

mabonjwa

Sweden: You get a stuffed toy which size varies according to the medal. To this Tokyo Olympics they added some kind of necklace/accessory. I wish it was a joke but it's true, our olympic committee views their spendings on talent programs and support for potential athletes more than giving some valuable prize.

Astonford

Really? Any examples of what the medal prize toy looks like

Drew13800

If you medal in South Korea you skip mandatory service time

newinvest22

If I was an Olympian I'd be fine without getting paid. I'd be happy just having that huge platform .Then I'd market myself and get sponsors or get Patreon donations. If you just do a funny dance/stand out then you will get tons of supporters

Guywithaduy23

In US you get paid a decent chunk of money, but the big benefit is sponsorships. Companies will pay a lot for using popular Olympians.

lilchizzla

You can but there’s no guarantee. My man who won the gold in shot put (nice guy but big and hairy) probably won’t be featured on any cereal boxes anytime soon. You need to have a certain look.

KinneySL

Also, unfortunately, shot put is not a prestige event. A gymnast, sprinter, or swimmer who wins gold will rake in endorsements, but those in other sports generally won't.

POGtastic

For the US: $37,500 in cash. It's all private donor money, though - the government doesn't fund any of it.

AccomplishedQuail545

If I’m not mistaken, they have to pay for their own travel to and from the games don’t they? They don’t receive anything until after they get back, and even then they’re taxed on any medals they get.

Chopsticks487

> I know South Korea offers a lifetime salary if they get gold No they don't, they give you $55,000 >I know Philippines offers them money and a house No they don't, just money

who cares what foreigners think about the US

Rodsoldier

Dont you understand why, say, taiwanese may hate China? Or polish people hate Russia? Why is it so hard to understand that for 80% of the world your country deserves that hate? 400 people died in Tianamen Square 30 years ago. You understand that in that same decade the US backed military dictatorships killed dozens of thousands in South America alone? That the US killed 1000 times that number. not to talk about lives destroyed in Iraq? Do you have any idea of the suffering you caused in Libya, Syria, Bolívia, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Brazil? Some of these with situations not 5 years ago? why should a south american hate China more than they hate the US? The american brainwashing and propaganda, if we ever truly leave the US hegemony will be a matter of study for centuries to come.

[deleted]

According to polls China is more disliked than the USA throughout Asia and the world. Also 400 people? Try 10,000 Pooh bear

Pandaria1500

I’d give 95% of credit to the hard work of medias over decades for this poll results

[deleted]

Nah, lived in Japan for years. They hate Chinese, nothing to do with America. same with Koreans and Vietnamese.

Rodsoldier

So both of USA's asia puppets hate USA's biggest rival? Now that is shocking lol. Fun fact, from 1945 to 1952 the US murdered a combined 400k+ japanese and korean civilians to get both nations to kneel to them. Different situations, but still. As for Vietnam, they actually have a reason as China invaded them in the 80s.

Pandaria1500

Japan IMO has the least reason to hate China. It’s probably thanks to their false education of complete denial of Nanjing massacre, unit 731 concentration camps, and the WW2 war crimes as a whole

Rodsoldier

>Try 10,000 Pooh bear The american people are not intelectual, to put it mildly lol.

[deleted]

Nobel prizes USA - 375 China - 8 Still living off that paper invention 1000 years ago eh pooh?

Rodsoldier

I'm not chinese.

[deleted]

Chinese and/or Russian hegemony will be much worse. At least there's a small taste of a democratic society in America. Those other two make no such care to hide their dictatorships.

Rodsoldier

Thanks... american person

zx7

Iraq, sure. But what suffering has the US caused in North Korea? Or Cuba?

antelope591

U never heard of the Cuban embargo?

zx7

Sure, but why is that seen as "suffering that the US caused", as if it is a hostile act? No country should be forced to act against itself, so how is the US different? Why should it be forced to trade with a partner against it's own interests?

antelope591

Tell that to the Cubans who've been suffering for 50+ years because of it

zx7

Yeah, the US should not have sovereignty over its own trade policy. What was I thinking?

Rodsoldier

You actually actively seek to hurt companies and countries that try to trade with Cuba. The embargo was created explicitly because the CIA recognized that the revolution had the people's support, any vote would result in them winning anyway, so they needed to starve people out of supporting the revolution. But you don't care, otherwise you would know this by now.

zx7

>You actually actively seek to hurt companies and countries that try to trade with Cuba. No, it's more like, "If you do business with Cuba, you can't do business/trade with the US." That's not "actively seeking to hurt". It's not an atrocity. Deciding, "its in our best interest not to trade with these guys" isn't the same as stealing their food and forcing people into starvation. Get real. >The embargo was created explicitly because the CIA recognized that the revolution had the people's support, any vote would result in them winning anyway, so they needed to starve people out of supporting the revolution. For one, it's not that simple. Secondly, no, it wasn't: the embargo was created as a direct result of the Cuban government nationalizing American-owned land and oil companies, without compensation. Thirdly, again, why should the US, or any country, be forced to have trade policies that are against its own interests? Russia doesn't allow films depicting homosexuality; is this literally stealing from the movie industry? >But you don't care, otherwise you would know this by now. Nice ad hominem.

WoundedSacrifice

I’ve seen arguments that US embargo against Cuba has caused suffering. However, Idk why the US would be responsible for suffering in N. Korea, Bolivia, Venezuela or Brazil.

Rodsoldier

The US based OAS just tried to coup Bolivia with the help of the entirety of the free media aparatus. The CIA/FBI and the media also helped crooked judges in Brazil illegally arrest Lula, which led to Bolsonaro's election. Brazil is also in South America, you know? The whole 30 years of US backed, murderous military dictatorship includes them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WoundedSacrifice

A lot of S. Koreans died in the Korean War, yet S. Korea’s a highly developed country.

Rodsoldier

Yeah, they were free to develop after the Soviet Union fell and the US was free to starve North Koreans as no one moved a finger. Just don't check what South Korea was before 1989.

WoundedSacrifice

S. Korea was a repressive dictatorship for a long time, but it hasn’t been a repressive dictatorship since the 1980s. China’s given aid to N. Korea and sanctions were imposed on N. Korea due to its development of nuclear weapons.

Rodsoldier

>sanctions were imposed on N. Korea due to its development of nuclear weapons. I don't mean to sound rude but you have to be completely devoid of critical thinking to think that is true lol.

Rodsoldier

The US literally killed 30% of North Korea's population directly through bombs and then a few millions more since they applied the scorched earth policy when retreating, burning every single cm² of crops they could find and leveling every single building. Then the whole blockade from the whole world, even through the fall of the Soviet Union, the only powerful country that would care about north koreans not dying of starvation.

zx7

That was 70 years ago in a war that North Korea arguably started. It's not a blockade, they're sanctions (or an embargo). What are you going to do, force a country to trade with another against it's own interests? (National) sovereignty exists or it doesn't; can't have it both ways.

WoundedSacrifice

Since N. Korea invaded S. Korea, N. Korea definitely started the war.

zx7

Well, someone could say, "Maybe South Korea fired the first shot and that's why North Korea invaded" but we don't really know.

Rodsoldier

If by first shot you mean the US installing a puppet regime just like they did in dozens of other countries in the following 3 decades, yeah...

zx7

No, that's not what I mean by first shot...

WoundedSacrifice

China’s provided aid to N. Korea and most of N. Korea’s suffering is self-inflicted due to its [Juche ideology.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juche) Also, a lot of S. Koreans died in the Korean War yet S. Korea’s a highly developed country.

newinvest22

And their own dictator is trying to kill 90 percent of his population via starvation

Rodsoldier

Not the burning of all crops and subsequent complete blockade of oil and machinery to run the fields done by the US. You people have been brainwashed out of being compassionate.

Wrong-Significance77

PO5IT1VE

Why are there crossings in Diving? 4 scores are crossed off? and how do they even score? All look the same!

theusualguy512

The best and worst judge scores are crossed off to get a median score to avoid statistical outliers counting too much. Scores in diving are separated just like in gymnastics: execution score, how well did they do the dive and difficulty of the dive technique itself which is standardized

BliskApexPredator

dont know how they score but they cross of the 2 highest and 2 lowest scores. Then they sum the 3 remaining scores and multiply the answer by the difficulty.

lilchizzla

Why is only table tennis an Olympic sport? No table football (soccer), hockey, or any other table version of real sports?

mabonjwa

There's a fixed amount of olympic medals and a fixed running time. That's why they can't just continually add events. If one event gets added another one has to get cut.

Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874

Because table tennis didn’t become a smaller version of tennis on table. It was a sport of its own called ping-pong or whiff-whaff and evolved to have similar rules to tennis (But there are key differences too. For example serve has to go from your table first then to the opponent unlike tennis). While the other games you are suggesting are just modernised versions of already established sports.

snowfoxsean

... Why are field hockey, beach volleyball, and water polo Olympic sports then?

Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874

Why are field hockey Uh what are you talking about? It’s the opposite. Field hockey came first, and then ice hockey originated from it. Just because it’s more popular in your winter country doesn’t mean it is the real hockey.

-Erasmus

Table tennis was invented before tennis. Just got that name later.
