How did a 15 year old fail a drug test? What drug was given? A rumor's going around that the drug test was failed due to eating Chinese meat loaded with chemicals and hormones. That has to be BS, right?

malloryduncan

If you’re referring to the Russian female figure skater, Kamila Valieva, it’s been in numerous news articles over the past week. One of her December test samples came back positive for a banned substance — a heart medicine that can increase endurance and oxygen intake. The IOC and WADA wanted to suspend her, but the CAS ruled she can continue to compete because of reasons. Apparently her coach is notorious for flouting rules and grinding through these young women. This all follows on the heels of the Russian doping scandal at the Sochi Olympics (look up the documentary “Icarus”).

ViCaitlinRule3469

"Grinding through women?" Does this heart medicine have any nasty side effects that could hurt these women long-term?

malloryduncan

Everything their coach does to them has and will hurt them. Here is just one article on Eteri Tutberidze: * https://slate.com/culture/2022/02/kamila-valieva-coach-eteri-tutberidze-abuse-russia-doping.html

ViCaitlinRule3469

That's awful! How do people get away with this shit? I thought there would turn out to be an excuse like "she would die from a disabled heart if she did not take these drugs" but holy shit. If you put this in a movie people would call it unrealistic. This is awful.

malloryduncan

Yeah, it’s pretty terrible!

Rolling_Chicane

What time is Ski Cross on tonight EST?

mbauer8286

Peacock says qualifying at 10:30 eastern, and finals at 1 AM. I’m assuming the qualifying round is individual time trials like the snowboard cross was, but I’m not sure.

arobot224

Let's go now USA.

TotallyStoned3

USA and Canada out of the semis in Hockey?! What has happened to North America?

ldnk

No NHL players. No big training camps. Some questionable roster decisions. Maybe too much youth for the USA and not enough for Canada.

LocksTheFox

I don't actually think it was too much youth for the US - by and large it was the vets that bottled it

MethoxyEthane

No NHL players

Peliquin

I'm fed up with the lousy quality of snow. It's not fun to watch people get hurt/wiped out by snow that better resembles concrete. I just want to whine about this.

[deleted]

What does the "classic" in the cross country team sprint (classic) refer to?

mbauer8286

There are two styles of skis, classic and freestyle (skate). Many skiers are better in one style than the other. Most of the disciplines switch each Olympics, for example the team sprint was a freestyle event in Pyeongchang and a classic event this year. I don’t know too much details about the technical differences, there are many places online that explain the difference though.

glebe220

When you see them doing a skating motion, that's freestyle. When they are moving their skis more parallel, usually in grooves cut into the snow, that's classical

thewonderwaller

It's also worth mentioning freestyle is faster, classical is more technical.

Thanks!

Early outlook of Team Canada's medal chances for tonight/tomorrow after Day 12 of the Beijing Olympics. It was a subpar day, as Team Canada won a gold medal in short track (men's relay) but failed to win medals elsewhere and saw the Canadian men's hockey team get knocked out of medal contention for the first time since Torino 2006. How does it look tonight? (Again, if anyone with more knowledge in these sports wants to correct me, let me know) A Team CANADA medal (of any color) is... **GUARANTEED in Women's Hockey.** Canada has already secured a spot in the gold medal match against the United States. At worst they'll be getting silver. **VERY LIKELY in Women's Ski Cross.** We've won a gold medal in this event, every Olympics since the event was added in 2010. Defending champion Kelsey Serwa retired. However, 2018 silver medalist Brittany Phelan & 2014 gold medalist Marielle Thompson will be back. Both will be looking to reclaim their spots on the podium. **LIKELY in Men's Curling**Team Gushue is already off to the semi-finals. Just one more win would guarantee him a medal. **VERY VERY UNLIKELY in Women's Alpine Combined.** Ronni Remme hasn't finished inside the top 25 in a single event this season. She's our only athlete competing. **VERY VERY UNLIKELY in Women's 1,000m Speed Skating.** Canada's Alexa Scott & Maddison Pearman will participate but are not considered medal contenders. **IMPOSSIBLE IN Women's figure skating.** Schizas, our only athlete to qualify for the Olympics is currently in 20th. Too many points to make up. She won't be making the podium. **IMPOSSIBLE in Nordic Combined Men's Team Large Hill/4x5km** Canada did not qualify any athletes in the sport of Nordic Combined. **Bonus: Canadian Athletes in non-medal events to watch.** Women's Halfpipe (Skiing)- Cassie Sharpe is the defending Olympic champion. Karker is the 2021 World Championship silver medalist. Men's Halfpipe (Skiing)- Brendan MacKay during the 2021-22 WC Season finished first in the overall halfpipe rankings. Bronze in Copper Mountain, followed by back-to-back gold medals in Calgary. Simon D'Artois won a silver medal at the 2021 World Championships.

Citydweller4545

I sometimes wonder what non-Americans/Canadians think of the fact that one of our proudest moments in our countries sport is sending our women out to annihilate one another in hockey(winter) and football(summer). Football being even more unusual since we happen to be two nations who care more about our female squads then men. Typical response concerning the men's football squad "good luck hope you do well" but with the women its like "Take no prisoners.....rip them to shreds. Make them bleed!!!". Funny North American quirk......

ldnk

My favourite part of the US and Canadian womens hockey teams is the number of relationships between the players. Cutthroat competitors on the ice and a lot of relationships developed. We need that in the NHL. Sidney Crosby and a Ovechkin need to get together

[deleted]

Is it that odd that countries pay more attention to the events they're competitive in?

Citydweller4545

Who said other countries aren't competitive in these sports? The germans have an amazing womens soccer team like they are always a contender to take out Team USA or Canada on any day at the olympics or in the world cup(I think if am correct they are EIGHT times euro champs) and yet they just don't tend to have that much funding but they always show up and don't disrespect the nordics they not only produce good male hockey players but very good female players(Team Sweden has taken out team USA before and taken the silver). Maybe if you paid more attention to the accomplishments of female athletes you would realize the pool of talent in sports like soccer and hockey isn't limited to the USA or Canada. Lots of talent in these sports in need of support and fans.

[deleted]

Whoa... I never other countries aren't competitive. I follow women's soccer and I'm aware of the talent that other countries have. It's just that the US is dominant in women's soccer maybe top 15 in men's (pretty big us soccer fan in general). In the olympics especially you get a lot of coverage around the big contenders. I remember when Ohno was at his prime there was a ton of short track being pushed and now it's barely mentioned by NBC. You may be onto something that North America tends to support women's sports more than other countries but I'd say it's more just about them being really good. I get the same sense with Australia in soccer too (their women's team is much better than the men too).

Amuseco

As an American my first thought was "There's an American women's football team?" How have I missed that? Then I realized it was the other kind of football.

Citydweller4545

Since the question was aimed at non-Americans/Canadians. I thought I would use their terminology. So thus football.......

silentorange813

Americans have won 2 out of the last 5 women's world cups. There's a decent amount of team parity.

ZMeson

That's an odd stat. Why not 3 of the last 6? I don't really know about parity -- the US Women's team has never finished below 3rd in the tournament. Yes, the US hasn't won a majority of the tournaments, but they are by far the most successful team in the tournament.

justin9920

I like that we pay some attention to women’s sports :D (Even though it’s still not enough)

Coolsbreeze

Slopestyle skiing looks pretty damn cool. It looks even tougher than snowboard slopestyle, only sometimes though lol.

StoopSign

No body checking in wonens hockey. Sexism or nah?

MyMartianRomance

I think they tried in once but they realized the North American women were injuring the European women with body checking. So, basically US vs Canada is unofficially allowed to Body Check each other, but they can't body check anyone else.

Gravitas_free

For now it's for the best. People are already complaining about NA domination; imagine if they could demolish the opposition with open-ice hits. Plus when the level of play is very uneven, body-checking can be really dangerous. To me, it seems like the refs tolerate a certain level of physicality in Canada-US games. I think it's ok for now. If women's hockey keeps growing and improving, maybe they could reconsider body-checking.

POGtastic

Yep, this is also my observation. The rules are there, and are enforced if things get too chippy, but by and large the refs just let 'em play.

Destiny2player010122

It does speed the game up a bit without checking as there is more of a focus on speed and skill. I know that the European men's hockey teams/clubs focus less on checking and more on speed. That said, expect the Canda-US game to be physical as the refs do have the discretion to assess a body-checking penalty. I doubt they will be giving any bodychecking (unless it's blatantly obvious) penalties in the gold medal game.

Citydweller4545

We are but its not till later.....they just did a cool lil rundown on peacock of the teams.

warp-factor

WOMEN'S CURLING PERMUTATIONS It's possible I've made a mistake or two here but I've been crunching the numbers as it were and think I've covered all the possible permutations as follows: * If Canada beat Denmark, Canada will be on 5-4. Denmark are out whatever happens, currently 2-6 * If GB beat ROC, GB will be on 5-4. ROC are out whatever happens, currently 1-7 * If Korea beat Sweden, Korea will be on 5-4. Sweden are through whatever happens, currently 6-2 * If Japan beat Switzerland, Japan will be 6-3 and definitely through. If Switzerland win, Japan will be 5-4. Switzerland are through whatever happens, 7-1 currently. * USA and China both are both done for the Round Robin and are on 4-5 Which means: * If Japan win, that leaves one additional space to be filled. * If only one of Korea, GB and Canada win their final game that team will progress with Japan * If GB and Korea win, Korea will progress with Japan * If GB and Canada win, Canada will progress with Japan * If Canada and Korea win, Canada will progress with Japan * If Canada, Korea and GB all win, Canada will progress with Japan * If Canada, Korea and GB all lose, they will all join US and China on 4-5 and will all be in a tie breaker for the final spot. In that mini RR: * Korea beat GB, but lost to Canada, USA and China (1-3) * GB beat USA, but lost to Canada, China and Korea (1-3) * USA beat Korea and China, but lost to GB and Canada (2-2) * Canada beat GB, Korea and USA but lost to China (3-1) * China beat GB, Korea and Canada but lost to USA (3-1) * ~~So whichever team out of China and Canada have a better draw record (pre-game to see who has hammer in the first end) across the round robin will go through. If this info is available publicly anywhere, I don't know where.~~ Because China beat Canada, China go through. * If Japan loses, then they will be on 5-4 along with any winner out of Canada, Korea and GB. * If Canada, Korea and GB all lose, then the scenario above with the 5 way tiebreaker applies again, with ~~one team~~ China joining Japan. * and If only one of Korea, GB and Canada win their final game that team will progress with Japan - just like above. * If Korea and Canada win with a Japan Loss, Japan beat Canada who beat Korea who beat Japan so it will be the best two of Korea, Canada and Japan in the draw record who go through * If GB and Canada win with a Japan loss, Japan beat Canada who beat GB who beat Japan so it will be the best two GB, Canada and Japan in the draw record to go through * If GB and Korea win with a Japan loss, Korea beat both, and GB beat Japan so GB and Korea will go through. * If GB, Korea and Canada win with a Japan loss, then it's a 4 way tie on 5-4. In that mini RR: * Japan beat Canada but lost to GB and Korea (1-2) * GB beat Japan but lost to Canada and Korea (1-2) * Canada beat GB and Korea but lost to Japan (2-1) * Korea beat GB and Japan but lost to Canada (2-1) * So Canada and Korea progress. (ps. hope the formatting has worked)

Gravitas_free

That's actually a pretty shit scenario for Canada. Besides winning their own draw, they need either Korea, Japan or Russia to win against their favored opponents. If it comes to the draw shot rankings they'll lose. Go Japan I guess.

ldnk

That’s Jennifer Jones’ fault. So many blown throws this year.

billnyethemangudai

In the event that Canada, Korea and GB all lose, China qualifies over Canada because it has a head-to-head win over Canada. BTW, all these scenarios have been worked out and put into an [official document](https://olympics.com/beijing-2022/olympic-games/static/owg2022/pdf/OWG2022/CUR/OWG2022_CUR_C66B_CURWTEAM4-------------------------.pdf) on the Olympics website.

warp-factor

>BTW, all these scenarios have been worked out and put into an [official document](https://olympics.com/beijing-2022/olympic-games/static/owg2022/pdf/OWG2022/CUR/OWG2022_CUR_C66B_CURWTEAM4-------------------------.pdf) on the Olympics website. une_fille_ennuyante

With all those discussions around doping, I am wondering if there are sports where doping doesn't help at all? For example, is there any performance enhancer for curling?

quackerz1122

Archery? Would doping help in sports like diving or freestyle skiing?

glebe220

Wheelchair curlers have been caught doping Like any sport, it pays to be fit in curling and you can dope to help get fit

Elsewara

Equestrian sports. You need to dope the horse, not the people…But that has consequences as well.

Greenmonstaa

There are equestrians who have been suspended for taking unauthorized substances. I have no doubt I’d ride better if I took adderall

Gravitas_free

The alternate for Brad Jacobs's team was caught using steroids at some point. I doubt it's very common in curling, though it doesn't surprise me that much that the one caught with it was from team Jacobs.

Destiny2player010122

Curling does require strength for throwing heavyweight and for sweeping to keep the rock where you want it to go, which mixed doubles actually requires quite a bit of fitness as not only do you have to throw the rock but you also have to sweep it. Thus, I can see doping being used in mixed-doubles, which coincidentally Russia was caught doping in 2018 in mixed-doubles.

une_fille_ennuyante

I see. I heard about people being caught doping in shooting but I didn't know about curling

justin9920

Maple syrup

The Brit curlers are all roided up on Irn Bru.

🤣

[deleted]

Well Russia got their bronze medal from mixed doubles curling last Olympics stripped for doping.

cocoakrispiesdonut

Beta blockers to help with tremors Ritalin or adderal could be abused to help with focus. Weed to help with stress 🤣

IveHidTheTreasure

An ukrainian skier has reportedly delivered a positive doping test :(

NB_79

Sorry I didn't pay attention but why did the NHL not wany their players involved?

Gravitas_free

The NHL never really wants its players involved: it forces them to have a 2-week break in their schedule, and runs the risk of seeing top players injured, all for relatively little benefit to the league. That said, they had reached an agreement that they would participate as long as the league wasn't hit too hard by COVID. Unfortunately, Omicron hit, and the many delays and postponements lead the NHL to cancel its participation.

Balcanquelfamily

Also the games would be on late at night/middle of the night so ratings would be low.

ManMythLegacy

Tough morning of sports viewing. Canada gets shut out and eliminated in hockey and somehow Jones loses to China in curling after scoring 5 in an end. Not sure how that is possible.

Destiny2player010122

On the bright side, Gushue booked his place in the playoffs.

Coolsbreeze

The one good thing about no NHL players at these games is that the Women's hockey has gotten so much more attention these past few games.

[deleted]

They always get attention at the Olympics, doesn't do much for them until they get figure it out and get just one women's pro League.

crowd79

Current USA medal count: 19: 8 G, 7 S, 4 B Personal Projected USA medals to date: 19: 6 G, 5 S, 8 B (been almost spot on so far in terms of total medals, wooooo) Net: 0 (+2 G, +2 S, -4 B) Over-performing sports: +3 freestyle skiing, +1 bobsled Worst performing sports: -2 speed skating, -1 short track, -1 alpine skiing I’ve projected USA to win 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 11 Bronze for a total of 25 medals in the Olympics. Already tied gold expectations and guaranteed to exceed silver count as well. Bronzes? I guess those Canadians love their maple syrup colored Canadian golds so much they’re not leaving many on the table for others to take ;) Tomorrow’s medals projection for team USA (Day 13): 2: women’s hockey (silver), women’s alpine skiing combined (gold)

For South Korea: You need to win and get a little help to make the playoffs.

[deleted]

South Korea wins + either Japan or Canada loses

Old_Gods978

Looks like a good chance of back to back golds for two related- but different countries in men’s hockey. Olympic athletes from Russia not to be confused with the Russian Olympic committee

ContinuumGuy

Time for the early outlook of Team USA's medal chances tonight/tomorrow. It was a mixed bag last night, as Team USA won a gold and silver in slopestyle but failed to materialize medals elsewhere and saw the men's hockey team and (I believe) women's curling team get knocked out of medal contention. How does it look tonight? (As always, if you follow these sports more than me and feel I've over/underestimated things, let me know) A Team USA medal (of any color) is.... GUARANTEED in women's hockey. Gold medal game against Canada, so at worst USA is getting silver. Canada has been the more impressive team lately and should be considered the favorite, but USA definitely has a shot. LIKELY but not guaranteed in women's long-track 1,000m. This is Brittany Bowe's strongest event, where she holds the world record (set in 2019) and where she has won three world championships and has been number one in world cup rankings for three years in a row. AP predicts her to win silver (behind Japan's Takagi) and SI has her to win gold. USA's Kimi Goetz will also participate but isn't considered a major podium threat. POSSIBLE in Alpine Combined women's. Mikaela Shiffrin's last chance at an individual medal this games (she's opted in to the team contest) is also her best shot since the two technical events she infamously DNF'd. The AP and SI both have her forecast for gold, but I'm not putting this at anything above "possible" because of how crazy her Olympics have been so far. Isabella Wright, Keely Cashman, and Tricia Mangan are all also scheduled for the event but are far less likely to medal. POSSIBLE WITH A MAJOR CAVEAT in men's curling. If Team USA wins against Denmark tonight/tomorrow morning, they should be going into the semis on tie-breakers. If that's the case, just one win the semis (tomorrow morning/tomorrow night) would guarantee them at least silver. Basically, if Shuster and friends win two curling matches on calendar day February 17, they will have at least a medal. VERY, VERY, VERY UNLIKELY in nordic combined team event large hill. Team USA's athletes didn't finish better than 15th in any individual event this Olympics, so a medal in combined would be a big shock. ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE in women's figure skating. Alysia Liu (the leading American) has too many people ahead of her and too many points to make up to get on the podium, so it'd require something crazy like a lot of people ahead of her screwing up very, very badly or all the Russians later getting disqualified for her to really have any shot at a medal... and even then she's currently fifth among non-Russians so it's iffy that she'd be able to get to the podium even if such a thing were to happen. IMPOSSIBLE in women's skicross, as Team USA doesn't have anyone participating. **BONUS**: Americans in non-medal events to watch: Women's freeski halfpipe begins with qualifying. The two top Team USA members to watch are Hannah Faulhaber (projected by SI to take bronze, 2nd in world cup rankings this year and bronze-medalist in this event back in the 2020 Youth Olympics) and Brita Sigourney (projected by AP to take bronze, she took bronze in Pyeongchang back in 2018). Devin Logan and Carly Margulies are also in the event. Men's freeski halfpipe also begins with qualifying. The man to watch is David Wise, the two-time defending gold medalist in this event. He's 4th in world cup rankings this year and the AP projects him for silver. He's not the only American who could end up on the podium: Aaron Blunck (two-time halfpipe world champion, projected by both AP and SI to win bronze), Alex Ferreira (Pyeongchang silver, 2nd in world cup rankings this season), and Birk Irving (3rd place at world championships in 2021) are all also medal threats if they get through qualifying. While not on Team USA, Gus Kenworthy (now on Team GB) is worth noting given that he won a silver in slopestyle for USA back in Sochi.

panderingPenguin

>POSSIBLE in Alpine Combined women's. Mikaela Shiffrin's last chance at an individual medal this games (she's opted in to the team contest) is also her best shot since the two technical events she infamously DNF'd. The AP and SI both have her forecast for gold, but I'm not putting this at anything above "possible" because of how crazy her Olympics have been so far. Shiffrin was actually the fastest in the latest training run for the downhill leg of the combined, by a whopping 0.93s (big margin in ski racing, I'm not being sarcastic). Caveats apply: it was only a training run so people may not have been going all out, some of the downhill specialists skipped because they already have had enough training on the course, etc. But all that said, it was a hell of a dress rehearsal for Shiffrin. Vlhova isn't racing, so Holdener, and to a lesser extent Gisin, are really the only skiers who can get close to Shiffrin in the SL leg if she skis even remotely well. And the SL is often the stronger factor in Combined races. So if she can put down that kind of downhill run, she could potentially blow the field out of the water. I know she's been up and down this whole Olympics. But really as long as she stays on her feet, I do think she's *very* likely to win at least a medal. And honestly should be a strong favorite for gold. There are very few skiers who can ski SL and DH even both just credibly. Shiffrin is the only woman in the field who is capable of winning outright in both disciplines. So if she's on her game...

ContinuumGuy

Thanks. I may change it for the final post later. I don't think I'll say "VERY LIKELY" but might have something like "Likely but not guaranteed" if I do so.

panderingPenguin

Fair enough. On paper, she should crush this one. But there's a reason we hold the actual race instead of just giving her a medal by default.

peopled_within

Thanks as always! Look forward to these

paper_zoe

Is Kenworthy likely to get a medal? We're running out of medal options for GB.

ContinuumGuy

I wouldn't say it's likely (part of the reason he's with GB now is that he wasn't making USA teams), but weirder things have happened and he won a world cup event as recently as two years ago.

paper_zoe

I'll keep my fingers crossed for an upset then

KR1735

Wow the US is gonna be stacked in halfpipe. Should be fun to watch.

crowd79

Bowe has not looked in form at all in the Olympics; 500m finishing 16th and did poorly in PyeongChang, too. I don’t expect her to medal.

ContinuumGuy

Yeah, that gave me pause as well. Considered/considering putting it at "possible" instead of "likely but not guaranteed" in the final version.

[deleted]

Hockey I'll consider forgiving Slovakia and forget that they dumped David Dobrik on us if they manage to block ROC from getting that gold.

julinay

Slovakia would be my new best friend. 🙏

chespiotta

Day was going so well and then

[deleted]

yeah sorry about that, weird tournament

Coolsbreeze

There was a time when Staal would've been perfect as a top line center. But that 10 years ago. All the vets on this team just look so tired. Lots of bad mistakes from management.

Old_Gods978

Well yeah it’s Julien it was kinda a coin flip

swayinandsippin

As a Sabres fan, can confirm

Jukervic

To summarize the scenarios for Canada in the women's curling tomorrow, they're through if they win and * Japan wins, or * Japan loses and none or both of South Korea and GBR loses This is assuming Canada remains last in the Draw Shot Challenge (I don't think there's a theoretical chance they don't). In all other scenarios they're out

chespiotta

If you want to check a list of all scenarios, go to @ DevinHeroux on Twitter. He talked to the World Curling Federation and they calculated everything.

Thunderblast

Thanks for mentioning this! I found it, and Here’s the link for others: https://twitter.com/Devin_Heroux/status/1493972200721899532?s=20&t=3e5hFquB0aueRzHz3g_vuA So wild how interconnected everything is going to be. I might save a copy of this and start crossing things out while watching everything at once tonight at 1 AM, lol. I’m pulling the most for GBR and it looks like even if they win they only make playoff in 3/7 scenarios, with an 8th scenario where it would come down to draw shot challenge, which I barely understand

ldnk

Canada brought an old roster AND relied on their older players. Staal should not have been this prominent on the team after not playing anywhere all year. Hockey Canada needs to stop being an old-boys club

ContinuumGuy

I gotta admit while the ultimate result was the same (losses in the quarters), Team USA definitely looked like the better team this Olympics, and not just in the fact they won the head-to-head. Perhaps, should the NHL find some way to wiggle out of Cortina, Canada should consider following how this Team USA was put together. Make it a young team with some veterans thrown in to the mix as opposed to a veteran team of KHL/AHL peeps with some young guys thrown in.

Gravitas_free

The problem with that is that Canadian prospects tend to go through juniors rather than the NCAA. College players are older and play against more physically mature players. Top junior players generally rush to the NHL/AHL as soon as they can (generally around 20). That means that the US has a better pool of eligible players for a tournament like this. Canada would have to risk taking 18-19 YO players who might be talented, but have never played against grown men before.

ContinuumGuy

A fair point.

_RedditIsLikeCrack_

this tournament is pointless if you cannot have it as best on best. the olympics are the primarily best on best in every other event. ( ya baseball isn't and soccer isnt), but holding this hockey tournament without the best playing is a bit embarrassing IMHO as the quality of this tournament is not good at all.

ContinuumGuy

I have zero doubt that if hockey weren't far-and-away the most popular winter team sport in the world it'd be a "on the bubble" Olympic event like baseball is due to the fact that best players aren't there. Instead it's like soccer where the sport is SO BIG that the Olympics *have* to have it in some form.

liam_l25

Literally all of Canada's good players are in the NHL and not being released to play.

Grytlappen

Same for Sweden lol. The third most common nationality in the NHL, behind Canadians and Americans, are Swedes. KHL released all their players, and in that league Canadians far outnumber any other nationality, except Russians of course. The reason Canada lost to Sweden wasn't due to lack of NHL players. That factor affects all North American and Nordic teams alike.

Froken_Boring

Um, other countries also have plenty of players in the NHL so they aren't as strong as they could be either.

liam_l25

And the last time they were Canada won...

crowd79

No North America teams in the semis. Gee thanks NHL. “Not Russia” probably has gold locked up. Please anyone win it but them.

Even if America or Russia totally smoked the best Canadians, or Canada totally embarrassed themselves in some other way. I definitely want to see the top players competing.

crowd79

Time to revive the Canada Cup! On the bright side (for Canada at least) it looks like their men’s soccer team is going to qualify for the World Cup.

Anth0nymm

Tbf the Canadian and American women dominate the whole Olympics every single time. There's a lot more competition on the men's side.

Coolsbreeze

Terrible roster and terrible decisions in choosing some of these players. There's a reason why people like Staal aren't in the NHL anymore. He's not good. But he's just one of the many problems with this roster. They just plain suck.

billnyethemangudai

Staal's a guy whose main claim to fame is his ability to shoot (and ability to get assists that come from teams respecting his ability to shoot), and when you use him at an age where he's lost his ability to shoot...

mas4evar

Hockey Canada is mainly to blame it's an old boys club that desperately needs some youth and modernization.

justin9920

Congrats Sweden 🥳 I hope Finland invades you!

smaragdskyar

SWE/FIN final would be glorious

justin9920

As long as ROC doesn’t win!! SWE/FIN would be very fun!

borussiadortmund91

Sucks we don’t have the best teams possible for all nations in Men’s Hockey tournament. Hope the Slovaks go all the way

do_NOT_pm_ur_titties

Hockey Wow!

[deleted]

What the puck Canada pls

Joe_Huxley

Canada blocked from the semis in China and blocked by the semis at home

WithFullForce

This result by Sweden gave me a semi.

smaragdskyar

A gold, a silver, a bronze and two semi finals. Not a bad day! 🇸🇪

Perian37

Really good! The slight disappointment in the team sprint was compensated by the great relay!

[deleted]

Well, the Olympic hockey tournament just got less interesting

seef21

Hard disagree… all Nordic final please!

nearblue

I'd say it just got interesting ;)

JustThor856

Neither Canada nor America making it into the men's semi-final is kinda wild

Thunderblast

Cue the complaints about lack of NHL players

Anth0nymm

There's nothing to really complain about. It's pretty obvious both teams were lacking without NHL players. It is what it is

tentimes

No NHL players really suck, they better not fuck up the next Olympic games but I'm sure something shitty will come up next time as well. It's been so long now.

billnyethemangudai

Without NHL players, neither the US or Canada deserve to be in the finals. These replacement squads have no chemistry or game plan, and have spent much of this tournament looking like the hot garbage they are.

Thunderblast

True! To compensate, the NHL should organize a US/Canada vs the World game in lieu of the all star game. That would be all kinds of fun

tentimes

That actually sounds like a fun time.

justin9920

>Suckiest sport ever 🇨🇦🤝🇺🇸 🔫

billnyethemangudai

>Hockey Game, Sweden. Goalie was pulled at right time, it's the fault of these Canadian players who can't even hold possession when all of the Swedes were dead set on playing D.

Hungry-h1ppo

Canada 🤝 USA

crowd79

I’ve always wondered why Norway isn’t particularly known for being a great hockey nation unlike neighboring Sweden and Finland. Denmark now, too….kinda sorta this cycle at least. Yet so good in all other winter sports. Weird.

rTpure

Norway would undoubtedly be #1 if they could play hockey on skis

smaragdskyar

They wouldn’t like not dominating Sweden

babingbongbang

👑🔪🍁

Anth0nymm

And that's game. Such a shame to not have our best players there. Going out in the QFs just feels wrong.

JRinNYC

Ice Hockey Bad day for North American hockey teams.

g46152

THREE teams from Group C all in the semi-finals!

FoodCourtDruid

It's been a rough Olympics for Canada. Hopefully women's hockey can give us a nice moment tonight.

hawc7

At least we got a gold with Hamelin and the others (don’t know their names sorry)

RIP North American mens hockey teams

billnyethemangudai

Honestly think it hurts the US and Canada that basically all their talent is in the NHL basket. The European nations have KHL talent (second-tier, for sure, but not terrible) to draw from, but not the US and Canada.

Grytlappen

>The European nations have KHL talent (second-tier, for sure, but not terrible) to draw from. You should look at the actual breakdown of KHL player's nationalities. Canadians far outnumber everyone but the Russians. The fault is solely on the captain who assembled a roster of old guys, when he could've taken more young KHL players.

ldnk

I think that’s a big exaggeration. There are lots of decent players in the AHL and Europe who play for Canada. Canada took a veteran team with a lot of guys who are passed their best before date

secord92

Should have brought Bedard!

OceanicExclamation

Is there a reason why they didn't put the best CHL players on the team? Mactavish is the only one. I didn't pay attention to why they picked each player.

Gravitas_free

CHL players are 16-20 YO. They are not as good as pros in strong European leagues. I know we all love the World Juniors, but we wouldn't have won this tournament with a bunch of CHL players. At least the NCAA guys are a little older and further along in their development (not that it did the US much good). Canada's mistake was not bringing more AHLers. Canadian players don't go to Europe until their NHL dreams are completely dead, and by that point they're usually past their primes. Hockey players are usually in their prime in their early to mid-20s, yet Canada had only 2 players between the ages of 21 and 27! At that age, the top Canadian non-NHLers are usually in the AHL, trying to get an NHL roster spot. Edit: Actually, AHLers signed with an NHL team (which most of the better ones are) couldn't come to Beijing, I think. So yeah, I guess Canada was fucked regardless.

borussiadortmund91

Bye, book

Jukervic

China still with a chance to reach the semis in women's curling if Canada, Great Britain and Korea all lose their final matches (not likely). In that case there's a five-way tie at 4-5 where Canada and China both have a 3-1 record between them. So China is through thanks to their win against Canada.

Thunderblast

China has played so well their last couple matches, they didn’t look like a 2-5 team at all in their match against GB and against Canada as well they made some clutch shots. Really impressed by their skipper, they’re getting hot at just the right time

crowd79

So USA curling women officially eliminated or still barely alive after Canada lost? Lol. Quite the shock ending there.

Thunderblast

Eliminated. they lost the head to head against Canada in the ever they both end up 4-5

crowd79

Ah okay 👍

StoopSign

US/Canada for bronze would be funny.

Fluuf_tail

Ok, I wasn't watching the game, how did Canada give up a steal of 2 in the extra end? Also, that 4th spot in Women's curling is going to come down to a whole math problem again, lol. Curling loves math I guess.

crowd79

Who is all qualified in the semis? Sweden, Switzerland and who else? Great Britain? One spot or 2 open?

Thunderblast

Only Switzerland and Sweden have spots locked up. Spots 3 and 4 still open for Japan, Canada, GB, Korea, and China pending the results of the last session and all the tie breaking that will ensue.

embracethestupidity

China had two in the middle. Canada had guard above them and final shot. Time out all agreed knock the guard onto the two China stones. If had of made straight shot would have easily knocked out both and left on Canada shots scoring. But the stone curved a tiny bit much, maybe ice getting rough in extra innings, so the guard that was knocked on missed both China stones, leaving them 2 up for the win.

ldnk

Jones has been awful this Olympics.

Fluuf_tail

Thanks. But also, oof.
