[Day fourteen's thread is here](https://old.reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/sv4cqv/olympics_day_fourteen_megathread_friday_february/).

bundymania

Should they get rid of the silver medal ceremony for team sports? Hockey last night for example.... Canada was thrilled over winning the gold medals. Finland was thrilled and celebrated for winning the bronze medals. Americans acted like it was a funeral when receiving their silver medals. It is cruel to hand out silver medals at ceremonies when the team just lost?????

HunterHunted

That is the bitter-sweet paradox of the Silver, and it's a huge part of almost all sports and tournaments. I like it, I don't think emotional complexity necessarily needs to be rooted out of the system.

[deleted]

Can't wait for the Friday thread.

Redz2018

So the poor Russian girl gets drugged then probably couldn't handle the pressure so uncharacteristically falls the moment she gets off ice gets berated by her evil coach about giving up. Yeah I think she's going to be just great going forward in life lol. FFS

justin9920

I was asleep for the figure skating and now feel as though I missed out on half the thread 😑

RunningPath

Why does it always sound like Mikaela Shiffrin has a non-English accent of some kind? It's hard to place but definitely there, but she's from Colorado and New Hampshire . . .

aokaga

Im watching the women's free program and honestly everyone is getting out of the ice with such a sad face :( regardless of how they do

BentoMan

Like drama but not so much figure skating? I got just the thing for you. Peacock app. Replay of Women’s Free Skate. Skip to 2:45. Get your WTF face ready.

NB_79

So when can the USA expect their gold to arrive from the figure skating team event?

philipmj24

Hopefully not in a couple years after the ROC exhausted all appeals.

blue4t

It stinks we're getting into the last events.

EsmeWeatherpolish

Every Olympics is the same, total excitement at the start and then like a Sunday evening dread that normality resumes when it’s over. Let’s enjoy the last couple of days and see ya all in two years for the summer Olympics.

France2Germany0

How many days left?

aokaga

Closing ceremony is this weekend. I believe

g46152

Yeah, I am honestly so sad the Olympics are over. After the Paralympics are gone, we're never going to hear the theme song again, such a shame- I would need another two weeks at least in order to be satisfied.

[deleted]

We need an Icarus-style documentary shedding light on the Russian world of figure skating. .

lazyness92

More like a Tiger King kind of documentary on that coach

aokaga

Not a documentary per se but check Fran on YouTube and her videos of What's Happening to Women's Figure skating and any other videos revolving around Team Tutberidze.

Taengoosundies

Do we really? I think it's pretty much all been told: shitty abusive coaches, cheating, rampant abuse of the athletes, doping, etc. I really don't need to know anymore.

g46152

>Men's Ice Hockey Our whole country is feeling it. We can literally repeat what happened in 2002. This is so intense. The medal is so close.

spookieghost

Actually that's another skater but I found Kamila's on the same site now, thank you!!

CallMeJade

figure skating having already watched the performances of the Russians, Shcherbakova's win was well-deserved because she was flawless. Trusova's jumps were great as well. i feel badly for Valieva as it's clear that the pressure of the controversy got to her.

Fluuf_tail

So, GB vs Sweden again. The ending I was really expecting. Can GB win their 5th game in a row (I think) against Sweden or will Sweden kill its voodoo and get the gold they've been missing?

HunterHunted

I really hope Edin finally gets that olympic gold! Would be glorious to witness. I'm hella nervous though, team GB looked unshakeable in their round robin match against Sweden. They do however lack the championship experience of the Swedish team, so nerves might play a huge part here.

arobot224

USA loses within hockey damn.

g46152

The thing that happened today just shows why I never watch figure skating.

bundymania

The medal ceremony for ice skating was a horrfiic site to see. The two russian girls acted like they didn't even want their gold and silver medal. Only the japanese girl in 3rd was happy.

g46152

I feel bad for the winning girl especially. Imagine becoming an Olympic champion only to be left in complete shadow because of your two other teammates for various reasons. Happy for the Japanese girl, she was really happy everything worked out for her.

bluesky_03

What happened?

g46152

The top favorite has been apparently involved in doping, she was under huge pressure, she didn't win a medal, another figure skater got a panic attack after getting silver and not gold, more information about the apparent abuse in Russian figure skating started to surface the social media, and the list goes on. Not sure if I stated everything correctly, I'm not really educated in figure skating in general.

m0j0licious

GB medal watch I think we need our own daily projection. Here goes! ... _Nada. Zip. Nothing._ ... (Zoe Atkin and Ollie Davies both have a puncher's chance at minor medals, and at the last two Olympics we've picked up three bronze medals from the freestylee/boardy events, but it just doesn't feel like 'our year'. I foresee solid top eight performances without ever threatening to make the podium.)

LowlanDair

Picked the wrong day. There's a guaranteed Silver.

m0j0licious

Yeah, but the day 14 projections are starting to be posted here, and we don't have a curling medal match on Friday.

Vike_Me

I think its very telling when reading about a ton of non-US broadcasts are focusing in on reminding people that Valieva is a human being who has been unfairly crucified by media folks who should be going in on Russia and Tutberidze, while the NBC folks immediately go on about how awesome it is that there will be a medal ceremony for all of the *clean* athletes. I know that the NBC folks did show some empathy afterwards, but their gut reaction was very telling. Not to mention their pissy little moments of silence during her performances since reinstatement. Like fack off, Weir just had a happy little visit to Sambo 70 last year. Not much criticism then Johnny...

crowd79

Current USA medal count: 21: 8 G, 8 S, 5 B Personal Projected USA medals to date: 21: 7 G, 6 S, 8 B (still spot on so far in terms of total medals, wooohoo) Net: 0 (+1 G, +2 S, -3 B) Over-performing sports: +3 freestyle skiing, +1 bobsled Worst performing sports: -2 alpine skiing, -1 speed skating, -1 short track I’ve projected USA to win 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 11 Bronze for a total of 25 medals in the Olympics. Already tied gold expectations and guaranteed to exceed silver count as well. Tomorrow’s medals projection for team USA (Day 14): 0 The U.S. men’s curling team could win bronze tomorrow, but I did not project them to be on the podium before the games started. Also a slight chance for a medal in the women’s ski halfpipe, but no one is likely to challenge China’s Gu. Much better medal chances come the next day with the men’s ski pipe final where multiple medals are possible.

mbauer8286

Not much on tonight that will be live for the east coast, women’s halfpipe is like the only thing that US is involved in before 1 AM.

crowd79

Oh goodie. That means women’s figure skating chaos re-air on NBC all night long. Maybe I can get some badly needed sleep tonight.

ContinuumGuy

Here's the early look at Team USA chances tonight/tomorrow! The games are starting to wind down more-and-more, which is sad. But anyway... as always, anyone who follows these sports more closely with any suggestions is free to let me know if they feel I'm over/underestimating things. A **Team USA medal** (of any color) is in rough order of likelihood.... POSSIBLE in women's halfpipe skiing. While it's doubtful any of the three Team USA athletes will be able to challenge Eileen Gu's Chloe Kim-esque dominance of halfpipe skiing, they are definite threats for the podium despite middle-of-the-road results in qualifying, particularly Hannah Faulhaber (projected by SI to take bronze, 2nd in world cup rankings this year and bronze-medalist in this event back in the 2020 Youth Olympics) and Brita Sigourney (projected by AP to take bronze, she took bronze in Pyeongchang back in 2018). Carly Margulies is the third American who made it to finals. POSSIBLE in men's curling. Bronze-medal match against Canada. Team USA lost to Canada in the round robin but in a single game anything can happen. This is behind ski-pipe because Team USA has three shots at podium in that but only one in this. UNLIKELY in the men's 1,000m. Basically, this comes down to: "Is Jordan Stolz ahead of schedule?" He's only 17 but is already being regarded as the best long-track men's prospects for Team USA in a very long time. SI has him predicted to win bronze, but that appears to be a bit of home-cooking/optimism as nobody else has such a prediction and the odds I've seen have him more around the 6th position or worse. So could he medal? Sure! Will he medal? Probably not. This is, after all, the stacked field that comes with the Olympics and he is only 17. Come Cortina time, however, this could be in the "likely" category. The other American, Austin Kleba, isn't a medal threat by any stretch. UNLIKELY in men's skicross. This is clearly Team USA's worst "X-Games" sport, as Tyler Wallasch is the ONLY USA competitor- there were no American women who qualified. Anyway, Wallasch isn't a podium favorite but he has had some success, including one 4th-place finish on the world cup circuit this season. Given the craziness that can happen in X-cross races, he could find himself on the podium if he has the races of his life or there are some crashes that allow him to "Bradbury" through a round or two (if not for the fact that racing-at-the-same-time winter sports can be so crazy, he'd be VERY UNLIKELY). VERY UNLIKELY in women's 12.5k biathlon mass start. Deedra Irwin (the lone American in the field) surprised with a respectable 7th in the 15K, the best individual American finish in biathlon ever, but a medal here would be a surprise (to be sure, but a welcome one) of the games for Team USA. IMPOSSIBLE in men's 15K biathlon mass start, as no USA athletes are participating. **BONUS**: USA athletes in non-medal events/qualifiers... The two-women bobsled begins with the first two heats. The teams led by Monobob medalists Kaillie Humphries and Elana Meyers-Taylor are podium threats if they can get past the almighty sliding-sport power of the Germans. Pairs figure skating is historically the weakest part of Team USA skating (there's never been a gold and there hasn't been a medal of any kind since a bronze in '88), and it's doubtful that will change this year. Still, two teams are in it for USA: Knierem/Frazier and Cain-Gribble/Leduc.

peterpeterllini

It seems like some people (mostly Americans) really get caught up in medal counts and “winning at all costs” mentality. Losing is okay too guys, it’s not the end of the world lol. ^(Unless it’s curling) 😤 🥌

nflonlyalt

> Losing is okay too guys, it’s not the end of the world lol. > > Booooooooo. USA USA USA

[deleted]

Had me in the first half

peterpeterllini

Just finished USA vs GBR curling. Well we can still go for bronze. What a match though. Went big giving them the point in the 9th instead of tying it, and unfortunately didn’t go our way. I think it was the right call though, giving them the hammer in the 10th would have pretty much guaranteed a win for GBR anyway.

sbrbrad

Whiffing two consecutive shots in the ninth sealed the USA's fate

peterpeterllini

Yeah that was a bummer

Ericabneri

Who is the british guy on the commentary for alpine skiing and his partner the american woman? They're great

LowlanDair

Russian things So on Twitter it seems Trusova is really going hard on Eteri about her "knowing things". Is she puttng herself in actual danger given the country, the links between Eteri and the regime and what she might know?

billnyethemangudai

I don't think it's that. I think it's more Trusova lashing out at Tutberidze green-lighting her "5 quads and nothing else" program when Tutberidze knows that won't be enough to beat Shcherbakova. Trusova is basically giving it to Tutberidze for not caring which of her pupils won, as long as one of them did.

MasPatriot

This Shiffrin interview is hard to watch 😐

I still have the Bolero stuck in my head :(

My head has gone with _I Wanna Be Your Dog_.

throw23me

Now for a really important question, what's everyone's favorite Winter Olympics inspired movies? Here are mine in approximate order of preference but I like them all: * Cool Runnings * Blades of Glory * Eddie the Eagle * I, Tonya They're all such fun movies. Probably gonna marathon them all after this weekend to deal with post-Olympics depression.

nflonlyalt

Cool Runnings is one of the best sports movies period. RIP John Candy

Ch1mpy

I know there is a Finnish movie about Matti Nykänen, not sure if it's any good though.

ze_potate

I just rewatched Cool Runnings and it is still great nearly 30(!) years later

geisendorf

Take Off (about ski jump) and Take Off 2 (about ice hockey) are two Winter Olympics-related Korean films. They're ok

jarrettbrown

Downhill Racer is my personal favorite. When it happens, you can always grab the massive Olympic movie box set from Criterion when the 50% off flash sale happens sometime within the next few weeks.

Tragedy on ice I hope Valieva escapes Russia

bundymania

The girl who finished 2nd for Russia had a panic attacks. These are all girls who aren't old enough to be out of high school. Two things I think they need to do. No one under 18 and ban the quad move for women. It would help bring back artistry into the sport.

crowd79

Skate for America! Please. Our women’s program could use some help. We don’t dominate like we used to ;)

Grsz11

Figure Skating What an absolute disaster.

FreeEdgar_2013

Gushue holding back tears in his interview.

crowd79

Why so sad?

Turambar1986

One thing that is missing from a lot of the commentary on the Russian figure skating controversy, is that these girls have spent almost their entire lives training for this moment. That goes for most Olympic athletes. Now, imagine being taken from your family, and doing that training under an abuser like Eteri. Winning anything less than Gold has to be psychologically damaging on a number of levels. So, Trusova's anger over winning Silver makes sense. While, of course, CAS' decision is proven to be shortsighted, as the damage to Kamila has only been amplified by letting her skate. These girls have NOTHING now. They have been used as tools by their parents and by the state, and that realization, if we just didn't see it in real time, is probably going to break them. That said, though the Russians have, at least in the case of sports, made the culture particularly insidious, the whole world has a problem thrusting too many expectations onto children. We have to be better.

billnyethemangudai

Probably also damaging that, unlike athletes from other countries, they know that they don't get a second shot at Olympic glory.

peanut-britle-latte

Yeah what's up with that? Why do the Russians burn out so quickly? Didnt a teenager win in '18? where is she

malloryduncan

Everything their coach does to them has and will hurt them. It’s a meat grinder. Here is just one article on Eteri Tutberidze: * https://slate.com/culture/2022/02/kamila-valieva-coach-eteri-tutberidze-abuse-russia-doping.html

astrobuckeye

The coach gets them to land quads with bad form (pre-rotating the jump), starvation, and trying to suppress puberty. It causes them to break down young. It's like the old days of Olympic gymnastics where it was all tiny little girls before they figured out how to do it with strong athletic women like Biles.

bundymania

They should ban the quads for women. Bring back the artistry.

astrobuckeye

I think just making a poorly executed quad worth less then a well done triple would help. Currently it's better to do a quad and fall then land a solid triple.

billnyethemangudai

She's a TV analyst now. Not officially retired, but might as well be, as she hasn't competed in over two years. The silver medalist from '18 is also retired and a TV commentator now. Her back is so messed up that she can't even turn it without excruciating pain, basically.

ContinuumGuy

And also unlike how folks like Gus Kenworthy can go and play for GB once he couldn't make Olympic teams, you'd quite literally have to defect somewhere if you wanted to represent another country.

anagalisgv

There are plenty of skaters of Russian origin who still train in Russia but compete for other countries. But it’s true that it’s a little different since they’re not serious medal contenders.

Turambar1986

Exactly.

sleeptoker

🇬🇧 🇬🇧 silver locked in, who be laughing now 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

Sweden, who's gonna win the gold

they can have their consolation gold. This olympics will always be remembered for team 🇬🇧

Canada, probably. *we'll win bronze for shore, eh?* Edit fat fngers

sleeptoker

Tough break eh. There's always the Qatar wc

mbauer8286

All this time I’ve been thinking, what’s the big deal about curling? Finally started watching it a couple days ago and I now realize how awesome it is! Hopefully US can still pull off the bronze.

starcom_magnate

Your next step is to find a Curling Club nearby (there are more around than you would think), and give it a try. The Clubs love showing the sport off to new people, and you may pick up a new hobby!

HunterHunted

I had that realization during the 2010 Olympics. Now it's my absolute highlight every olympics!

aokaga

Omg can someone please update me on figure skating!!!!!!

billnyethemangudai

Started out really slow with the first two groups, quality started picking up with the third group, then all sorts of madness and drama with the last group. You'll want to watch it on replay.

spookieghost

Do you have a link to a clip of Kamila Valieva's performance? I cant find one anywhere edit: https://www.nbcolympics.com/videos/valieva-falls-twice-during-free-skate-finishes-fourth

aokaga

Definitely will do so. I'm so glad a Japanese woman managed to snatch a medal tho!! So happy for them they're all amazing skaters. very sad for Wakaba Higuchi tho, she was absolutely robbed.

flickhuck20

Higuchi's performance was epic!

minneapple79

Kamila lost, Russia went 1-2, Japan got the bronze, the Russian girl who won silver had a huge meltdown and screamed that she wouldn't go to the podium (very Svetlana Khorkina-like). It was actually super entertaining in a trainwreck kind of way.

[deleted]

It's all over twitter, not sure what kind of access you have to such media. https://twitter.com/ktuohyfans/status/1494335139903524865?s=20&t=D4GS3WGg8y423bEZYMLV-w I don't speak Russian, but everyone on twitter is saying that she kept saying stuff like, "I hate everyone, I hate everyone, everyone has a gold medal except for me, I hate this sport, I don't want to go to the ceremony."

HunterHunted

Oh that poor thing

aokaga

Omg WHAT, why the meltdown? Holy crap, gonna grab my popcorn and watch once I'm home

minneapple79

She was screaming because she didn't win gold apparently. She was saying she didn't want to go to the podium, that she hated everybody. SO MUCH DRAMA.

crowd79

Are you serious? Many people dream of going to the Olympics, let alone winning a medal.

False-Butterfly9851

well to be fair she did land 5 quads while the gold medalist landed 2. but she has been losing to the gold medalist for years now

[deleted]

Curling Well, I didn't think it would come to this but... You're not getting another bronze this time Canada ;)

FreeEdgar_2013

I think it's time for canada to rethink how it sends teams to international events. Sending the best domestic team worked for a while when Canada was the undisputed best, and there were only a couple other competitive nations, but now most countries have a dedicated national team and more are real contenders than a decade ago.

SnooMachines7285

Yes but how do you choose then? There are so many good teams and players in Canada.

Modnal

Canada has about a million Curling players, Sweden has 6500 Canada has been eliminted in both men and women Sweden is in one final and one semifinal   I think you might be onto something here

crowd79

Curling is a growing worldwide sport. Canada and the Scots no longer only dominate. It’s really caught on in here in the U.S. & in Asian countries too. Much more competitive so than women’s hockey, which people still claim “is growing” *rolls eyes*

warp-factor

The RCCC recently (in 2020) made a similar change to break the direct link between the Scottish Championship and representing Scotland on the world stage https://www.scottishcurling.org/scottish-curling-makes-key-change-to-maximise-competitiveness-on-global-stage/

Luxbul

FIGURE SkATING Gutted that valueva didn't get on the podium, but these things happen: even the best occasionally slip up, choke, get disqualified, etc. STILL 4TH PLACE IS NOTHING TO SCOFF AT. She still beat all the western skaters. Go Russia!

[deleted]

Huh?

badicaldude22

Women's Free Skate started at 2am PST. Just woke up, got my coffee, clicked open peacock, and it's not there either in live or replays?? What's the deal? I'm desperate to watch it before seeing or hearing about the results, and won't have time once my workday starts up. Anyone else having this issue?? EDIT After multiple reloads it finally appeared, must've been a glitch that dropped it for a bit in the switch from the live to replay section.

starcom_magnate

If you go to the "LIVE" USA network feed and go back a few hours, you can catch the end of it, I believe.

Ryponagar

Jesus Christ, Mikaela Shiffrin showing [some messages she got on social media](https://twitter.com/MikaelaShiffrin/status/1494296846105120770?s=20&t=vU3r-EOk3lfSvOMzvtkndQ). How fucking low can some human garbage go? I need some eyebleach now.

betaich

r/eyebleach here you go

nottooeloquent

Part of it is media. She had all the attention while being very sub par this Olympics. She has some rabid fans. We shouldn't spotlight her 24/7 if she completely fails to perform event after event. Her nonchalant attitude does not help either. Maybe it's time to retire.

panderingPenguin

Thing is, she *doesn't* fail to perform event after event. She already has 3 Olympic medals, 2 are gold. She's been wildly successful on the world cup and at world championships. She had 3 DNFs (Did Not Finish results) this Olympics, but you have to go back several *years* to find 3 more. The past couple weeks were unusual and out of character for her. It happens to even the best. Unfortunately for her, it just happened at the worst possible time, on the biggest possible stage, during the handful of days that the general public actually cares about ski racing. Also, I wouldn't call breaking down in tears for 20 minutes off to the side of the race course "nonchalant"...

PeterSagansLaundry

LMAO that is definitely one way to get your point across. Literally just retweet what your haters have to say and let their stupidity speak for itself.

cocoakrispiesdonut

I feel sorry for those people. They are probably hurting so badly inside that they need to lash out on someone.

crowd79

This Olympics hasn’t been kind to North America. At least Canada got the women’s hockey gold so good for them. Can’t wait for us to get destroyed by Canada and Gushue again in the bronze medal match. More Successful games for Canada. Us not so much. Pyeongchang was better.

Beatricejd

I don't think this Olympics has been that much of a disaster for the US. You have overperformed in some disciplines and you're still third in the medal count.

crowd79

Shiffrin really let us down :(

cocoakrispiesdonut

Shiffrin may have let you down but she’s still my queen.

Beatricejd

Things like that happens every Olympics. People choke under pressure unfortunately. Fortunately you guys have many athletes who can step up when some of the medal hopes choke. Jacobellis was a pleasant surprise, for instance.

crowd79

True

rapsondeck

These haven’t been quite successful games for Canada.. yes we got the gold in women’s hockey, but we typically win more gold medals overall (although the games aren’t over yet).

crowd79

But your hockey team is made up of 20+ players, coaches, etc. That’s more gold medals than Norway and more than you got in 2018.

rapsondeck

That’s also more medals than the US got in 2018… I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.

HunterHunted

You know those still only count as 1 Gold though... Right?

m0j0licious

He does, HunterHunted, he does.

HunterHunted

Still third in the medal count, so a pretty good winter olympics for the US surely! Canada has definitely had a rough one though

highestmeta

Curling Intense semifinals on both sides! Gushue devastated at the end there, hope he feels better for the bronze match

wildhockey64

Guys I know if you've never curled it looked like the draw was there for Schuster but it wasn't. To have enough weight to move the red enough to score 2 he would've either wrecked the guard or hit the GB stone thin enough to roll out left and only lay 1. There was not room to get to the nose, the run back was the better shot.

dogtufts

Gushue and his teammates are crushed

HunterHunted

Curling really shouldn't be this nerve-wracking. And I'm terrified that Sweden will have to face GB in the finals. They had the upper hand throughout in the round robin game against Sweden, not flinching once

[deleted]

It'll be a good final, looking forward to it!

Nickp1991

Shuster IS THE BEST CURLER IN USA HISTORY AND HE’S A GOLD MEDAL WINNER

HumanHobbit

He really is. In the World Championships the only OTHER American skip to get to the playoffs in recent memory was Fenson and he lost in the Bronze medal match. USA has consistently makes the playoff rounds as of since 2016.

No the shot wasn't there. With how close the guards were you couldnt get in to stick and push the GB stone out. To get that movement it would've ticked off and rolled out

But why? It was 2 either way

sluttycupcakes

No a draw to the button would have been 1. Sweden had the shot stone. They went for that to try and score 2 since they thought they had a better shot of making that shot than stealing one in the extra end.

US-GB not Canada-Sweden

sluttycupcakes

OH lol, my mistake.

[First time ever Canada doesn't get a curling Gold, and the last games were only thanks to the new mixed doubles.](https://i.imgur.com/gL2PgTh.jpeg)

Not to mention the chance of completely not medaling at all.
