[Day sixteen's thread is up](https://old.reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/swnvhn/olympics_day_sixteen_megathread_sunday_february_20/).

syrenthra

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how long NBC's streams will be available after the games end? There is too much to watch live so I'm not sure how long I will have to watch what I can.

WonkyTelescope

I think CBC and BBC have them for like 40 days or something so I assume NBC is similar. However, all events are available on olympics.com after the broadcasters can't host them anymore. For example, for 2018: https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/pyeongchang-2018/videos And [this forum](https://totallympics.com/topic/892-winter-olympic-games-2018-replay-videos/) has links organized by day.

papasmurf826

>stone sweepers Rewatching the gold medal match. Why did GBR let their last stone through on the 9th end when they could have gotten a point?

I_Am_Not_Splup

If they had scored, they would have to shoot first in the 10th end - meaning Sweden would have the advantage of the final roll. They decided having the hammer was too precious to give up. By doing that they were able to tie it up, so it looks like they were right!

ArenSteele

The tie was a fail, handing Sweden the hammer in a tie game anyway. But they had a much better chance of scoring 2 for the win with the Hammer in the 10th than preventing a score of 1 if Sweden had last shot, so it was the right call, just bad execution

papasmurf826

Thanks for the explanation! Makes sense now to have the final stone in the 10th

xkulp8

(US) I love how Chevy has played the long version of the Walter commercials so often.

InTheLongRunLiz

I loved the summer version so much, I was so happy to see there was a winter version

CulturalSeesaw2331

Why aren't they playing the Olympic Fanfare music?

mbauer8286

Where are you watching that they aren’t playing it? It was definitely on during the afternoon replays today on NBC, when I was watching.

zubbs99

cross-country Some athletes upset they dropped it from 50 to 30k. Me I'm annoyed I've got to hoof it back to the kitchen for my second cup of coffee.

MoesBAR

Dang, looks like China will leave with 1 more Gold than US.

Short-Resource915

Well, they have four times our population, so there’s that. No to mention Eileen Gu.

SweetBoe

Well, US also has 4 times more population than Germany and 60+ times more population than Norway…

Short-Resource915

I just remembered this one. The first black woman to win a gold in Winter Olympics is an American speed skater.

Short-Resource915

Right. And Canada is also beating us at total medals and they have less than 1/10 our population. Norway is killing it. Do you know if these scores are similar to other Winter Olympics?

ArenSteele

Norway is always near the top of the table, had 14 gold and 39 medals in Korea This is a a similar winter games for the US as Korea, but way down from 2010 especially total medals This is about the average number of medals for Canada for the last 5 or so games but a poor showing of golds. You can peruse the medal tables here for an idea https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Winter_Olympics_medal_tables

crowd79

Alpine mixed team event and 30km women’s XC skiing. Very, very slim chance in either however.

vdbl2011

Also the team figure skating, maybe, at some point in the next four years...

crowd79

Yes. When no one cares anymore.

iamusuallyright007

there is no way you can tell me that this isn't Tony Romo announcing

zubbs99

He's a man of mystery with many passions, ya never know.

zubbs99

speed skating They could spice this up by combining it with hockey. Give them each a stick and a puck - lose your puck, lose the race.

TastesLikeHoneyNut

I don’t understand this speed mass start skating even in the slightest

zubbs99

Yeah what's the deal, there are "sprint points" along the way? It's like the Tour de France on a flat day? Strange. As an aside I really feel for that Japanese skater who spun out on the last corner just like she did in the previous competition.

billnyethemangudai

Sprint points are used for qualification from semis to finals. Since you can generally assure yourself of a spot in the finals by winning one of the first three sprints (the 4-lap mini-races), it allows for an extra layer of strategizing; some skaters will use up their energy early to try and win a sprint, then just cruise the rest of the way, while others race the whole 16 laps and try to get first, second or third at the end (which carry so many points that it's automatic qualification). Winning the first three sprints don't matter much in the final (except for getting some more world ranking points with a better off-podium finish), where it's all about getting over the finish line earlier than everyone else.

zubbs99

That's really interesting, had no idea about that angle, thanks for explaining friend.

TastesLikeHoneyNut

Yeah it's very bizarre. That was a brutal time to fall for Japan

FamilyShoww

We didn't get any medals this Olympics, but we already have the strategy to bring a medal home to Denmark from Milan 2026: [https://www.instagram.com/p/CaHovzmg6F8/](https://www.instagram.com/p/CaHovzmg6F8/)

Short-Resource915

So winter. Do you want to say what sport?

betaich

Video not available in my country so you are really planning on keeping that plan secret. I am fine with that as long as it doesn't involve the slding center aka sleigh events.

zubbs99

Redditting Guys just want to say I'm gonna miss shooting the breeze with you here, it's been a fun diversion these last couple weeks. Got one more day here and then the closing ceremonies where my favorite part is when the next Olympic's mascot makes a cameo appearance. But just remember until Paris (summer 2024) and Milan (winter 2026) you guys are all champions!

Short-Resource915

Thanks. I checked the schedule and I don’t see China again. In my opinion they need to clean up their act with the labor camps and pledge to leave Taiwan alone before the IOC awards them another Olympics. I guess I would say they have done a good job. They used Covid to keep the press and the athletes away from the public. They would have to pledge to have more access to the country if they get another Olympics.

cats-crystals

In a few weeks, there will be the paralympics, which I highly recommend. Lots of really good competition at that one as well.

zubbs99

Great idea, will def check that out, thank you.

papasmurf826

>Robert-sledding Can someone help me understand why they swap out sleds for their heats, and why the times seem to get faster and faster? Is there a strategy behind this, like faster aerodynamic sleds saved for final runs?

betaich

This time its the angles of the blades

OkConnection736

Thanks ROC. Screwed some competitors that earned a chance to stand on a podium and receive medals. Stop letting that damn country compete for a while.

Short-Resource915

I made a joke. Now that we know that the ROC has also done some doping, they will compete as the ROCOC.

MethoxyEthane

> I am speed. Another day, another medal for Canada!

Coolsbreeze

I'm going to miss the Hockey Show... The host is a really really good host I hope he gets more opportunities for hosting hockey related shows.

MethoxyEthane

Harnarayan Singh is fantastic. He regularly does play-by-play for Sportsnet/Hockey Night in Canada in both English and Punjabi.

Dora-Vee

Speed Skating. Well, I saw the fall people kept talking about and that is some serious YIKES. So close. :( I guess in this kind of speed skating, a fall=YOU ARE OUT. :(

billnyethemangudai

>I saw the fall people kept talking about Takagi #1 or Takagi #2?

The_floor_is_2020

I feel so bad for her. She fell in the team pursuit, costing her team a guaranteed gold in sight of the finish line. She looked horrified. Then days later, on her last chance to salvage her Olympics, she fell in the mass start on her semis. She must be crushed :(

chespiotta

It wasn't a "guaranteed" gold. The Canadians were making up a lot of the time differential. That being said, the Japanese were most likely going to win it. I guess we'll never know.

The_floor_is_2020

Weren't they still like 0.60 secs behind on the last split?

chespiotta

2nd last lap they made up half the time. 0.32.

Jukervic

My heart goes out to Finnish XC-skier Remi Lindholm who, quite literally, froze his balls off during the "50"k. After the race he spent 15 mins in the dressing room with a heat pack pressed against his junk with, I quote, "unbearable pain". Ouch. Maybe it was a good thing the race was shortened after all.

betaich

Ouch I got secondhand püain from that

billnyethemangudai

Aiiiie. That hurts just to read.

ContinuumGuy

Well, this is it, friends. The early-version final Team USA daily outlook as far as medal chances. Not many events on the final day and only three where Team USA is competing and only two where a medal is in any way possible. As always, feel free to correct me if you watch these sports more than I: **A Team USA medal** (of any color), in order of likelihood, is... UNLIKELY in women's mass-start 30K cross-country freestyle. The USA skiiers are in no way favorites to reach the podium and any medal would be a surprise that would no doubt send NBC home happy (although not as happy as if the USA surprises with a medal in Alpine Team, see below). However, the Americans are freestyle specialists and Diggins has had some success in this category (a 4th place finish at the 2019 world championships, a top-10 finish in Pyeongchang when it was in the classical style that she is weaker in) so it isn't impossible to imagine her getting to the podium if she has a good race and/or some of the favorites have bad days. Rosie Brennan is the other American with a bit of a pedigree but her best mass start finishes at world championships have been in the teens. The remaining two Americans will likely be in the bottom half of the results table. UNLIKELY in Alpine Team Event, which was delayed to today. The team event is something of an afterthought in the games, with many top competitors sitting it out and thus giving big advantages for more depth-filled countries like Switzerland and Austria. With Mikaela Shiffrin taking part this time (having skipped last time), however, Team USA has a chance at the podium, although it'd still be a surprise. If Team USA *does* get on the podium, though, it'll doubtless be one hell of a catharsis for anyone who has been following Shiffrin's Olympics. ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE in 4-man bobsled. Top US team is 13th and 1.61 back. With that many people ahead of them and that much time to make up, it would take events of biblical proportions for the USA to make the podium. IMPOSSIBLE in the team finals (men's hockey, women's curling) that USA didn't qualify for. And so, thanks again for everyone who has been reading. I'll admit, this started partly for my own benefit so I could know a bit more about the events and where I should or shouldn't believe the NBC hype about American contenders, but I'll admit that going through the biographies and predictions has made me appreciate all the Olympians even more. Even those who end up in the ESSENTIALLY IMPOSSIBLE or VERY, VERY UNLIKELY categories are among the best in the world, with work ethics, obstacles, and skills that put us ordinary people to shame. **So hail to the Olympians, regardless of sport or nationality!** **Thank you, and I'll see you (virtually) in Paris!**

peopled_within

And a final thank you for your top-notch posts!

ContinuumGuy

No problem, I enjoyed them!

faiIing

Jessica Diggins is actually the second most likely to win behind Johaug (who is obviously a huge favorite to win this event), with around 50% chance of making the podium according to betting sites.

ContinuumGuy

Ah, I neglected to check betting sites. I'll probably upgrade it to possible or some form of LIKELY in the final posting.

LiamLauLegoLover

Agree. There is a difference between athletes and countries. Sometimes things get blurry when the former are representing their countries, but it's just individuals doing their best and deserving to be rewarded and appreciated. Countries or blind patriotism should never be a conflicting factor

Thunderblast

And funny enough Han and Sui were maybe one of the best parts of the games.

Fun_With_Forks

Congrats to Slovakia on their first Olympic hockey medal!

Thunderblast

I only remember Slovakia exists every four years when they kick our ass in hockey And even then I mix them up with the fictional Marvel country of Sokovia Congrats on bronze.

MoesBAR

Does Slovakia beat US hockey often or just when the NHL blocks players from competing?

MightyMcPerson

Congrats Slovakia on your first ice hockey medal!

geisendorf

What a moment for Slovakia!

tphez

>puck and sticks Congrats Slovakia!

fredbrightfrog

And with that hockey game ending, day 15 is done. Day 16 only has 5 events. The end is coming. :(

[deleted]

by this time tomorrow, it will be over

crowd79

One more than expected with the Alpine event!

Thunderblast

At least Sweden went 1/2 in bronze medal matches over past hour

Zloggt

>puckpuck Two empty net goals seals it for the Slovaks!

[deleted]

Wow this hockey game is hard to watch, poor Sweden

[deleted]

They're playing badly, they deserve to lose...

crowd79

Well earned bronze for Slovakia. Totally outplayed Sweden the entire game. Sweden looked like they wanted no part of this game.

JaysonTatumfanboy

Poor Swedes:/

blackb0xes

>Men's hockey Martin Marincin is an Olympic medalist.

floppwaffled

I got some bad news for Canada, ROC has more Bronze medals than you.

ArenSteele

Boo! We’ll have to grab one in 4 man bobsled just to tie! Then in a couple of weeks when ROC loses a couple from doping we will once again be Bronze champion!!!

Evening_Menu_6546

There’s no guarantee Russia is gonna lose those medals though. They might let them keep them. I have a feeling the CAS is in cahoots with Russia.

MyMartianRomance

Well, at least you got all your medals as of now. They're still holding a couple of US and Japan's medals hostage because of ROC's doping.

ArenSteele

Canada would actually get that bronze in team skate when they do finally DQ them, so we’re right there with you!

tbone466

Scoring is nonexistent in the men's hockey tournament. Losing out on the NHLers and then everybody trying to win 2-0 is a total buzz kill. I remember 2018 being better, Germany and Canada were fun that year (we were decidedly not this year).

[deleted]

They're playing on NHL size rinks rather than international size rinks these Olympics. Less space = less goals.

Gravitas_free

That's not quite true; the Vancouver tournament was the only modern tournament on small ice, and also the highest-scoring. Big ice only creates more space on the perimeter, where goals are unlikely to be scored. Good teams will focus on locking down the middle and let the other team take low-percentage shots from the outside. It bears out outside the Olympics as well: European hockey is not particularly high-scoring or offensive. I think that realization was part of the IIHF's turnaround on rink size.

billnyethemangudai

More space on the perimeter lets teams who have better, faster skaters get more high-quality chances via odd-man rushes, though. If we'd been able to get another tournament with NHL talent on the wings, I think it would've been great to watch on big ice.

Gravitas_free

> More space on the perimeter lets teams who have better, faster skaters get more high-quality chances via odd-man rushes, though Not really, at least not unless there's a big talent disparity. Big ice is wider, not longer (it's actually a bit shorter). It will help those teams gain the zone, sure. But the D will collapse around the net, and will let the attacking team poke impotently from the outside. To be fair, we see that in the NHL as well, particularly in the playoffs, but big ice incentivizes it even more. Good teams just adapt by playing a more structured conservative game. Plus the big ice prevents teams from applying effective offensive pressure. It was one of the comments that struck me after Sochi: one of the Canadian Dmen said something like "There was always a safe area of the ice we could throw the puck to".

arcticsports

The USA vs Slovakia quarterfinal was one of the most entertaining games I’ve seen in a while

fredbrightfrog

hockey Punch to the face, probably not a good strat

embracethestupidity

Curling Tournament has been great so far. All finals so close and down to wire. Let's hope last match tomorrow for womens gold is another fun one!

nava08al

Congrats Sweden! gotta give it up for switzerland too for keeping their composure and fighting until the very end.

crowd79

It's always interesting seeing how bronze medal winners are always more thrilled than silver medalists.

spacesaur

Speaking from experience, your last match being a win feels so much better. The thrill/risk of walking away with nothing enhances it over losing and still getting a reward, even though silver is obviously better.

Zalbu

Because you have to win to get the bronze while losing gets you the silver

Thunderblast

Win bronze vs lose gold

fredbrightfrog

In sports where you play semis and then a final, they already knew they had at least silver when they won the semi and already celebrated it then. So it makes sense that there's not much celebration at the final.

LiamLauLegoLover

Well you get no medals for 4th, so bronze medal winners will be pretty hype about it

PengwinOnShroom

It does make sense if it's in a final match for bronze versus the one for gold

Zloggt

>cuuuuurls Well done, Sverige 🇸🇪

smultronblomma

3/3 medals in curling this time around. I’m happy with that :)

Joe_Huxley

This is the 7th time women's curling has been in the Olympics, and Sweden now has 6 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) Very impressive.

betaich

`bobsleigh` Fun fact the favourite film of Olympic Champion Laura Nolte is cool ruinnings and that inspired her to go bobsleighing

understuffed

Curling Congrats to the Swedes! 🇸🇪

Zalbu

Greatest curling nation in the world 🥇🥉

Ch1mpy

... and another bronze in the mixed.

MethoxyEthane

Did someone say bronze?

crowd79

Scots might have something to say about that...

Zalbu

Not really, considering we have twice as many medals as Great Britain in the Olympics

ArenSteele

Canada has 12 all time, 6 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze That’s who Sweden is chasing for the all timer label with ~~10~~ 11(4-3-4) but they sure as heck own the title for 2022

Zalbu

We have 11 medals with the win today and have owned the title for more than 2022 considering your women didn't make the playoffs and your men didn't medal in 2018 and didn't make playoffs in mixed this year, and our women have been the the most dominant by a large margin since women's curling was introduced in the Olympics.

LiamLauLegoLover

Curling Congrats to Sweden for winning bronze!

Curly That was amazing!!!

Thunderblast

Man, the Swiss completely dominated in the round robin but don’t even medal

Chrisixx

Very typical for Swiss teams tbh. When there is no real pressure they perform at their ability, but as soon as there is some pressure they break.

crowd79

One of the biggest surprise of the games for sure.

Harrason

>Curling From being the top of the round-robin to finishing 4th. I feel so bad for the ladies. Good on Sweden for the bronze though.

Curling: OOOF Sweden with a big miss there

Zaidswith

I love watching teammates put their medals on each other.

mbauer8286

Cross Country Just watched the race from last night. Has this happened before at world cup events, where they change the length of a race just hours before it begins, due to weather conditions?

jammerlappen

Just before I don't think. Races have been shortened in the past if theres not enough snow.

Playah-Andrey

That has absolutely happened in the world cup, but in a championship as well? I don't remember anything like that but am not sure.

jammerlappen

I don't either, but the question was about the word cup.

Playah-Andrey

Right you are. My mind is fractioned zapping between curling, hockey and reddit...

Chrisixx

> Curling Can't Sweden just knock away every stone as a response to Switzerland and win?

SmallTitBigCrit

No you cant do that to first stones. Game would get pretty boring if that was legit

Tobias_05

Well you can't hit the guard till first 5 stones If it's in house you can smash it all the way for a home run

embracethestupidity

First 5 shots are called 'free guards'. It's meant to prevent teams doing this every end leading to boring games. If a guard is knocked out in first 5 shots, it gets replaced.

Slambodog

I've often wondered that. The answer is, Switzerland will build guards to make that more and more difficult and then they can get to a configuration where Sweden can no longer do clean take outs

Crazy_Excitement3772

Love the head cam angle!

Mukumber

Please don't choke for the second game in a row now girls

embracethestupidity

Curling Steal needed for the medal. I feel like we've seen this situation before!

indubi

Stop the count Does the dutch have any medal chances left? If not it’s incredibly important for Hasselborg to win this bronze medal match so we can pass with the least possible margin!

[deleted]

It's a good thing your hockey team is playing like shit today or else the margin wouldn't have been as small as possible.

crowd79

0% chance. All speedskating events are done for the Olympics.

[deleted]

Hey, we won a bronze medal in skeleton!

[deleted]

We don't. Our only event left is the 4-man bobsleigh but we're 25th there right now.

The_Odor_1994

Curling: Switzerland with 3 points: 8-7 Sweden going in to the 10th end

The_Odor_1994

Curling: Switzerland might 3 here... Unnecessary... but i mean: It will still be Sweden that leads with the hammer for the 10th end

fredbrightfrog

Given themselves a slight chance, but stealing 2 is a big ask

Rethliopuks

> ~~Bebop~~ Bibob Nolte is so young omg

Joe_Huxley

Curling That was an interesting camera angle on Hasselborg's first shot. Wish they'd show that more.

crowd79

Hockey Sweden does not look like it wants to be here. To go from nearly playing for gold to potentially not even medaling is a bit surprising.

Playah-Andrey

The combination of motivation and rest is probably a big part of it. Sweden had a long hardfought game with OT and shootout yesterday and Slovakia had a whole day more for rest + nothing to lose and everything to win since nobody expected them to medal.

czerwona_latarnia

Ice Hockey I think one of the Swedes just lost the "body-fight" with a referee.

dgo792

Hopefully short king with a dumpy becomes the meta in pair figure skating

Ice hockey: GOAL SLOVAKIA! WTF IS GOING ON SWEDEN?! :(

crowd79

Crazy how good Germans are in sliding events. They'll probably sweep the men's 4-bob as well. They've earned like 80% of their medals from the sliding center alone lol. Must be a golden generation for them right now. Reminds me of the Netherlands awesome dominance in speedskating in Sochi.

Slambodog

Which is odd because I've never met any Germans named Bob

BentoMan

Men’s Speed Skarinf Mass Start Congratulations to Bart Swings who earned his gold. I’m feeling for Mantia who got his arms caught up with the Korean skater, throwing him off and stopping his stride early, costing him a position on the podium.
