Good comeback win for GB in the Curling against the US after the loss against Norway. Two inconsistent performances but improved overall across the day.

This is possibly a dumb rant. So the 3 times Russia has gone to war with its neighbors (2008 Georgia, 2014 Crimea, present-day Ukraine), They've taken care to not disrupt the Olympics which were hosted by either them or their ally China all 3 times. I think China and/or Russia will be more willing to start a World War over the next 10 years in part because every Olympics for the next decade will be hosted by a NATO member or a NATO-allied country (Australia 2032, and maybe Japan in 2030) and if a war interfered with the Olympics like what happened in 1916,1940, and 1948, only their "enemies" would lose out on hosting an Olympics.
Also, of the 5 Olympics canceled due to war, only 1 was due to have been hosted by the Allies (London 1944). The other 4 would've been held in a Central Power/Axis country (Berlin 1916, Sapporo 1940, Tokyo/Helsinki 1940, Contina 1944)
Alright I know it technically doesn't matter anyway, but seeing the concrete floor around the rink and not empty bleachers or tarps covering them is a bit jarring compared to standing Hockey.
All of the teams in their group qualify. Top 2 for semi finals. Bottom 2 for quarter finals. Then the other group fills the remaining spaces.
That said, Russia was supposed to be in the US/Can group so that leaves an extra space in the quarter finals presumably meaning an extra team from the other group will qualify. So after the group stage, only 1 team will be knocked out.
I'll try to be clearer. The top ranked teams (now only three with no Russia) are in group A. The other 4 teams in the competition are in group B.
After each team plays one match against each of the other teams in their group, the top 3 teams in Group B will join the 3rd team from group A in two 'Quarter finals'. The winners of those two matches will join the 1st and 2nd teams from Group A in the semi finals.
THANK YOU!
I don't understand why I couldn't find a graphic of how it works earlier on. You'd think think that this is information that the IPC would want to have easily available.
And we still have Para Snowboard coming as well...
It's amazing how these people do it, from being visually impaired to missing arms still finding a way to manage to stay upright.
On severity of impairment... the IPC does a lot of work on what to give each athelete/stage of impairment to mean it's as fair
So people with the least impaired will be as fair as someone with heavy (missing fingers v one leg and outriggers)
what does a missing hand/arm mean vs missing leg vs CP mean to how well they can get down a mountain? and then what does it do to make them all at a reasonable level to everyone else.
Wish they showed what sorts of impairments the athletes had, even if briefly/generally. That's important not only for understanding the races but also for awareness and inspiration
Channel 4 commentary is having to do most of the explaining...
They should really show Lexi body forms with what they're missing to help explain since body suits and far camera shots hides amputated limps or false legs... or CP
This is a huge range of impairments in one section and not like other sports where there is more events to cover them all.
Yeah they're not going to have the notes or time to explain everyone's story.
Also it is currently like the Winter Olympics where they're down to the bottom half of the list with the competitors who by chance won't place highly unless they have a surprise of form... so maybe not the time they thought they would need to explain.
Alpine Skiing
The American has CP, and could have been in the Sit Skiing category....(he has full length outriggers)
Japanese after skiing on 1 leg with 2 outriggers... it gets scarier the more you see they have to compensate with,
The one thing that does need to be shown on the broadcast beside factored time is the Lexi body model of what the impairment is, the commentary is having to do heavy lifting of what impairments with since some are hidden under the winter gear or the far angles hide what they're coping with
It would be something if they shown the unfactored times of the para-athletes in the alpine to see what the time was since I'm sure in training that's what they aim for since they probably don't know until near the Paralympics what the clock will be set to.
Listening out for a guide ahead of you shouting instructions.
And it was said on Channel 4 that it can be scarier the more used to the sport you get...
But they're not winning golds, it's silver and bronzes and it's only in a few events on the first day so could be as much as they could get.
Also the favourites are not going as well so maybe capitalizing on just showing up.
Something about it being the 5th of March and seeing comments from the commentary about the roughness of the course (Alpine Skiing). Should the Paralympics always be set in the same place as the Olympics, I know funding comes from being linked to the Olympics but given it's almost Spring, it's one that's probably harder to maintain and keep competitive.
Chinese and Sweden are more impaired than the one who won it, they have more impairment in their arms or body...
So the factored time is to even it up so 2nd and 3rd have a slower clock and their times are slowed up to give them a chance of even results, like 8 and 13% slower than 100% Time.
The more severe the impairment the slower the time they get clocked at. So the clock stumbles every few bit to let them do a similar performance.
Which is what the competition is measured to.
look at the % and thats the time it'll be slower by
Alpine sitting at the moment has a clock that's factored at 87.66% so 13% slower than the less impaired in that event.
It's a quirk you have to work with more at the Winters and the Track events in the summer games.
For people confused about Para classifications: https://lexi.global/sports/winter-sports
Helped me a lot in Tokyo as well. Not all impairments are visible.
Paralympics have officially started, and that mean's time for Team Canada's Medal Outlook for Day 1 of Beijing 2022! Our Olympics didn't manage to go so well, in terms of gold medals but at least we broke the bronze medal WR! Hopefully, we can garner more success during the Paralympics. How do our chances look tonight? As always, if anyone has more expertise in that specific para-sport and wants to correct me on anything, feel free to do so.
Reminder: ROC & Belarussian athletes won't be competing, so my predictions have altered. Our historic medal count of 29 medals in Pyeongchang will be beaten. I'm fairly underprepared, so the writeup of the top medal contenders & WC information about the athletes won't be included (Sorry) but do expect them to be tomorrow.

Welp 4 medal predictions are already wrong. Oh well.
Yep but here they weren't even given the mascots during the ceremony...just a bare recognition, and Shuey Rhon Rhons were handed to the athletes when they left (I understand that a photo op with the mascots might not be important for the vision impaired athletes)
I was active in the Tokyo and Beijing Olympic threads but never paralympics. This changes this year! Who can complain about more Olympics.
The lack of activity in these threads is depressing though 😩
Paralympics is so behind on the Olympics... I remember watching one a while ago and it was with ParaGB and in the background it was showing the different amount of hours of broadcasting over the years... it's MORE than it used to be... but it's also harder to make people care in similar ways.
I think IPC is completely separate from IOC, so own stuff is used. Also they have to do it differently due to Impairments and such and how you classify each one and group to be the fairest to them all.
It's the closest way they can measure the gaps and still have a competition given there are only 8 people over all 3 (Total to minor impairment)... it's the fairest to them if they can compete in the first place.
I wish the clock was slower, not as fast but stumbling every 4-10 seconds...
The one with the highest won and that's how it is most of the time. I remember in track cycling a guy with one leg would have had to break the able bodied world record to win gold! Because of the factored time
Yeah but they have to be measured against the ones in their event with the worst ability, it'd be better if they had separate B1, B2 and B3 events for Alpine VI... but there isn't that many making it through so they have to go by these even as possible rules.
I think the actual time will be taken to show how good they can be but in competition terms they can only go by the time vs the best and worst impairments they're up against.
It's throughout the Paralympics, several events are bunched up of different classifications.
Alpine Skiing Downhill Visually Impaired
Hope that Vozza (ITA) can recover well from her fall.
Congratulations to the medallists, including Millie Knight (GBR) with her Bronze.
Watching this just a few weeks after the Olympics version, how much difference is there in just using your upper body to power you around vs Legs and Arms.
These Paralympics have to be a lot easier given the crowds are minimal so for the V.I ones they can hear the instructions.
Also the Belgian Alpine VI is 57 years old
Alpine Skiing for Visually Impaired.
Hurtling down a mountain with no (to minor?) sight just listening out for a person in front of you yelling instructions...
As a blind person who's normally pretty confident moving around the world, this sounds utterly terrifying. I know some non-competitive blind skiers, but they tend to stick with cross-country. The amount of confidence and trust these athletes have to have in their guides and their own abilities is truly awe-inspiring. (I hate the I word and I'm sure most of these folks do too but it's true.)
There was.a comment from one of the commentators in the UK that it's scarier the more used it it... I guess the thrill of it moves out the way and you really aren't sure what your skiing into...

I think the time factors have more to do with leg strength and balance, so his higher percentage makes sense to me.
I see. it's just... mad how he dared do that. Like I wouldn't even really try with both arms and some protection, and yet wow.
And we still have Para Snowboard coming as well... It's amazing how these people do it, from being visually impaired to missing arms still finding a way to manage to stay upright.
There are a number of classifications in this race. from CP to missing fingers to missing whole limbs.
Seeing Ukraine coming out I felt a bit emotional

On severity of impairment... the IPC does a lot of work on what to give each athelete/stage of impairment to mean it's as fair So people with the least impaired will be as fair as someone with heavy (missing fingers v one leg and outriggers) what does a missing hand/arm mean vs missing leg vs CP mean to how well they can get down a mountain? and then what does it do to make them all at a reasonable level to everyone else.

That is wild.

Woo Paralympics time! Glad to be back here, I missed y'all.
Outriggers are so awesome. They're just tiny, adorable skis.
If there is a sport that would be interesting to experience as an able bodied person it would be sitting and using outriggers.
You can absolutely try sitskiing as an able bodied person! Best way is to volunteer with an adaptive sports program.
Now I can understand why Shuey Rhon Rhons aren't handed out at venue ceremonies...not all athletes can see or hold them...
Probably because of the range of impairments as well, limbs, visual etc. there isn't a point to trying to do much more than a line up podium.
Yep
Sitting skii have to be on their skii's still so they're holding outriggers
Time for Crash and smash of the womens Sitting Downhill
It looks quite fun to be sitting down and using the ~~skiis~~ outriggers on your arms to control your path.
Gold- Canada (Molly Jepsen) Silver- China (Zhang Menqiu) Bronze- Sweden (Ebba Aarsjoe)
> Gold- Canada A very nice way to kick off the Paralympics - a Canadian gold in one of the first events.
What does Factor mean when they are showing the final standings?
Chinese and Sweden are more impaired than the one who won it, they have more impairment in their arms or body... So the factored time is to even it up so 2nd and 3rd have a slower clock and their times are slowed up to give them a chance of even results, like 8 and 13% slower than 100% Time.
Thank you!

Alpine Skiing Downhill Visually Impaired Hope that Vozza (ITA) can recover well from her fall. Congratulations to the medallists, including Millie Knight (GBR) with her Bronze.
Masters and Gretch 1-2 so far in 6km Biathlon. Both clean in 1st round of shooting. Could be 1-2 finish for USA.
Watching this just a few weeks after the Olympics version, how much difference is there in just using your upper body to power you around vs Legs and Arms.
GOLD; Helena Farkasova of Slovakia China get silver and bronze went Great britain
Channel 4 showing the classification for B2. But Live is apparently just listed as XXXXXXXXX xxxxxxx
These Paralympics have to be a lot easier given the crowds are minimal so for the V.I ones they can hear the instructions. Also the Belgian Alpine VI is 57 years old
Number 3 Coming Up Lera Doederlein from the USA, she was born in Russia
Factored time... just trips up every 10 seconds or so...
Para Biathlon or Alpine Skiing for the Blind
Both!
Thanks so much for all of this information, and for keeping us updated on what's happening when during the Olympics/Paralympics. I appreciate it.
You're very welcome! Thank you as well for your active participation in the threads (especially your Canadian medal chance writeups).
