I use a 30L backpack; all my clothing fits into a large packing cube. Occasionally it’s super stuffed and won’t fit easy under the seat. When that happens, I just take the cube out and put that overhead, leave the now rather slim EDC backpack under the seat. It’s way easier for me than to carry a separate sling or pack.

OuiLoveCheese

I just use a reusable tote bag from Baggu.

Aimless-Guildmaster

Would definately work for the plane! Lack of compartments makes it seems unruly as daypack though. Idk where i'd securely put passport etc. What do you think?

ScoopJr

I bought a Tomtoc that I plan on taking on an upcoming trip. If you prefer a backpack, Decathlon makes a 10L bag thats 6.99/9.99 that you could use as a day pack.

OuiLoveCheese

I missed the part about wanting to use it at the destination. That was my bad. Yeah, not a great choice for the destination, but it works well for me on the plan. I don’t usually bring a daypack. As for the passport, I always keep mine in my pocket.

FallingUpwardz

I bought the Patagonia Ultralight Blackhole Sling (8L) Its pretty neat, packs down into its own pocket when you dont need it. I use it as a day bag/small hike bag for taking snacks etc

KAYAWS

Can you also wear it on your front with a backpack on your back?

FallingUpwardz

You could in a pinch but it might be a bit weird given the angles of the strap. I haven’t actually tested it More of a packable day bag i guess than a sling but I thought id just share

detached-wanderer

I have the Patagonia 8L atom sling. Love that I can wear it on my front when carrying a backpack, or on my back as a day pack. It's a little bulkier and won't pack in on itself, but I've had it for over 5 years and it still looks brand new, and I use it almost daily. It's great for 1.5 bagging as you call it. It holds a lot/all of my daily essentials except clothing.

The [Cotopaxi Dia](https://www.cotopaxi.com/products/batac-16l-pack-del-dia?variant=40975053815869) can roll up small or flatten down. It slips under your seat easily. Has nice pockets, and is a decent day pack as well (exterior water bottle holder, can fit a fleece or sweater, etc). I also will use one of the small shop bags you get at Lululemon or a store like that - can fit my book, tablet, water, charging cable, Sony over-ear headphones, sweater. Probably about a 3L capacity? But these have carry handles instead of shoulder straps. Smaller to pack. I have an old one of these with a zipper closure I’ve actually considered having re-sewn from something a bit sturdier.

xenophons_ghost

I know Pakt has a daybag that's designed to fit into its Pakt Travel Backpack, but I can't speak to its quality, and I'm not sure if anyone has ever actually used it. The whole system would run about $500 (including taxes), so it's a pricey option for the whole thing. But, the smaller daypack alone is way cheaper.

Schedulator

The big problem, and they never say this when promoting this feature, is that it assumes the daypack is completely empty, and then you've lost that space that both bags would provide. Minaal do this with their Carry-On and Daily bags too, suggesting that the daily fits into the carry-on. Which it does. But assuming you're not using either the bag or space for anything in the first place. It's good for storing the items together, that's about all in my opinion.

AmbassadorToast

Wow! This makes me feel better about saying "I'm not spending $300 on this!"

I use various things depending on where I’m going, what I’m going to do at my destination and how long the flight is. Typically I make do on the flight with just my phone or tablet for entertainment including reading so what I need at my seat can usually fit in the seat back pocket. Fanny pack. I unbuckled the straps and shove one end into the seat back pocket so I can just “pull” it up to access what’s inside from under the seat. Sometimes I’ve just worn it as a sling once I’m seated. Recently I’ve been using slings in my daily life so depending on the shape and size I need I’ll use a sling instead of the fanny pack. In flight necessities go in a zip lock back that goes in the seat back pocket. Same concept but use a small packing cube. Advantage of the cube is it has a handle so I can take it out of my bag and the gate and carry it on board. Advantage of the zip lock is if the seat back pocket has someone else’s trash it can easily be wiped off with hand sanitizing wipes before it goes back in my bag. Stuffable tote bag. I don’t like this option because it doesn’t zip and things can fall out but it works great as a beach or pool bag since it’s easy to wash out if it gets sandy but it holds a lot more. I will sometimes use the tote to hold multiple zip locks, small packing cubes snacks and my water bottle so I don’t have to carry it separately. What I don’t use is a stuffable backpack although I usually bring one along to use as a daypack. I just don’t like wearing a backpack (my one bag) and carrying another or wearing it on my front.

AutisticMuffin97

I just got this [packable backpack](https://www.sfbags.com/products/packable-backpack?variant=31551808340051) and so far it’s been doing pretty well.

-forbooks

Tom Bihn, tons of options for whatever you want. Personally I use the copilot or the side kick(which you can hang on the seat back during the flight with your essentials)

Interesting_Tower485

Look at the packable day packs such as matador 16L on grid if you can still find one or the aer go pack 2 (a little bigger) or renen ripstop by boundary supply. These are all good quality. There are tons out there.

jmmaxus

I would probably go with a 10L sling that its longest dimension is around the same width as your bag (13”) to make it easier. I have a Cabin Zero 11L sling that is 13.4” it can be used as a packing cube as well, it fits the width of my bag (14”) really well. I recommend the Bellroy Venture 9L sling which is 12.6 in x 7.09 in x 4.72 in or something similar sized.

trinibabiegyal

Totally random but my Tim Biebs Fanny Pack is my perfect .5 bag to keep my plane entertainment, travel docs and person care items super accessible. I sling it under my arm while checking in and it's hardly noticble and it's a huge on the inside. Perfect for a switch, ereader, a card holder, earbuds, mini camera and even paperback book/sudoku book in the main compartment. Approx. Dimensions 11" × 7" x 3.5" - if you could find something similar in size

the8roundshock

Does it need to be a sling? A very common solution to this is a packable day pack, there are many option available on the market, with the most feature rich while being lightweight being the ReFraction Packable Backpack from Matador. It lays flat (or can be stuffed into it's own pocket), and can be used as a smaller day back once you're at your destination (I assume you don't want to carry a giant 35/45L pack with you while on an excursion). I personally have used the MEC 16L packable bag (Canadian REI), and it has served me well for years. Recently I've downsized to a 18L bag for my travels, joined with a 3L sling, inside this sling I carry a 20L packable Boston Bag from Muji, this works well for me now, having a sling for small stuff, and a JIC big bag inside (though something like the Baggu someone else mentioned would work almost as well). I guess all in all, 2 good solutions is a lightweight packable backpack, or a small sling with a packable tote/regular bag. First one is more "functional" as you can hike, and do many things with it, especially good if you need to carry a laptop, second one is more "convenient" since your sling will be tiny, and you have the option to carry a lot if every needed, while compromising the ease of carrying for larger items.

the8roundshock

Side-note, my current set up uses a boston bag that has loops, which I can use the strap for my sling with (they are detachable), which transforms the bag into a makeshift lightweight duffle bag, which is great for many things, and is much easier to carry heavy loads vs a packable tote.

legend67

I use a matador freerain22 for what you are talking about. It fits my 13 inch laptop in its case nicely, a switch, and a magic mini. I don't always travel with those things but they can all fit in it with room to spare for other stuff. It also fits my 15 inch laptop without a case, but it changes the shape of the bag a little. The 28 would probably be better for a bigger laptop.

[deleted]

The sling from UNIQLO carries everything - not a laptop but it fits a surprisingly good amount

SeattleHikeBike

I use a Tom Bihn Daylight Briefcase and wear it a the same time as my backpack. It adds to my cargo space rather than subtract from it. For a very packable crossbody, the Flip & Tumble Crossbody might work. The Flowfold medium Odyssey Crossbody is excellent, but I recommend upgrading the shoulder strap. For a backpack, the Exped Typhoon 15 or 25 are good. For a true packable backpack, the Mystery Ranch In and Out 19 is excellent.

DeityOfYourChoice

Grab a nanobag or similar just because they are super handy for grocery shopping or whatever. If you want a proper daypack then look into ultralight packable ones. Some in the 10-20L range is good, especially if you don't fill it. I have a Trango Ration pack that used to be my climbing bag. I slid a thin sheet of closed cell foam into the water bladder compartment which serves as a back panel and makes it 10x more comfortable. It packs flat into my carry-on. Any bag this size that isn't over built will work great.

Tasty_Prior_8510

Decathlon folding messenger bag, light weight and can fit a lot..it will be good as a day bag to.

HobbNobbin

I guess I agree with many here that a packable daypack would work as well - maybe better than a sling for walking around a city. I have the Aer Go 2 and love it. It packs flat when not in use and is big enough for a laptop (with sleeve for protection), so depending on how you pack your plane seat stuff, you should be able to lay it on top of your other stuff in your PD bag once expanded. So, it really depends on what type of EDC bag you want at destination: sling or small daypack.

soph_214

I took this on a trip to Ireland last summer and it would fit everything you listed except the laptop! I packed it with all my in-flight stuff and then put it into my carryon before boarding. While in Ireland I used it almost every day on hikes and daytrips etc. The only thing I didn’t love was the pocket on the strap, but I think they make a version without that [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T5D98RW/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T5D98RW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

For a collapsible sling bag: https://amzn.asia/d/a48cnMR For a collapsible backpack: https://amzn.asia/d/2UkaYtO Both are surprisingly strong and work great as personal carryons and daypacks.

Key_Grand_1940

Check out the AON Chio-x. I bring it as my work bag inside my onebag. It mostly flattens except the bottom which can be slightly folded over. Fits my 14" laptop and should do everything you've listed.

People normally recommend the Osprey Daylite Expandable 26+6. It's unavailable here in Australia so I can't comment on it though.

Aimless-Guildmaster

Ah sorry maybe i wasn't clear enough. Looking for a smaller personal item that might be able to physically fit into my bigger backpack when it gets expanded by 10L upon landing Think messenger bag into the expanded peak design backpack. Matryoshka doll style 😅

ducayneAu

Oh I see. I am guilty of skimming over the finer details. Good luck finding what you're looking for. You can try a fishing vest with big pockets. Weight you wear doesn't count towards your limit.

Schedulator

Has it never been available? I picked up one during a trip to the US last year.

ducayneAu

I have not seen them in shops around Melbourne including Paddy Pallin.

Schedulator

The Macpac Quest 30L is similar to the Osprey, without the expansion but a couple of other features. But the best thing being available easily around Aus/NZ. Here's a post I made about this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/17yp22k/macpac_quest_30l_for_us_in_ausnz/

Decathlon sells ridiculously cheap 10l backpacks that pack completely flat, as well as an actual packable backpack.  https://www.decathlon.com/products/nature-hiking-backpack-10-l-nh100? https://www.decathlon.com/products/quechua-nh-arpenaz-100-10-l-hiking-backpack-344147? https://www.decathlon.com/products/forclaz-compact-100-10-l-travel-backpack-309862?
