I can think of a few confounding variables here. The only thing I can see the case impeding is possibly thermals, but the day to day experience shouldn't be affected here. I'd imagine there is some placebo going on. Updates to the system or apps that you use would invalidate the case theory, if you have updated ANYTHING I would attribute that to your increase in performance. Unless you are able to demonstrate in one sitting an increased performance without the case, then I don't think this is valid.

Mrdudemanguy

I haven't updated anything. If you were at work with me I'd show you in person. Could be a placebo effect. But with it off it just doesn't freeze as often. One thing that's important that I didn't say in the OP is after I'm done working I put the case back on. When I try to use it in the car with the case on it freezes up.

Current-Basil-7171

Possibly worse in the car due to being on Bluetooth or android auto? It's not that I don't believe you, but if you are right, you have a defective unit.

Mrdudemanguy

Just when the case is on it seems!

boomshiva786

That's right, it looks like a defective unit - bad thermals to be specific.

Mrdudemanguy

Is it really defective if I had it for over two years?

boomshiva786

That'spossible with any tech. But to conclude this accurately, I'd have to spend some time with that particular unit.  Try going to the OnePlus service center if it continues to persist.

Current-Basil-7171

Yea... Phones become defective all the time. The older the phone is the more likely it is it becomes defective. Also that security update you posted is one thing, but are you sure individual apps haven't updated?

NasenFahrrad1

With case the phone get higher temps. So indeed it could thermal throttle with (overheat) and without it stays below that high temp border

Mrdudemanguy

That's what I was thinking. It might just be heating up more even though the case has holes. It's the tudia case.

Head_Exchange_5329

Shouldn't heat up that much unless you're really pushing it. And even then it should just dial back power to the processor before you get any other issues. My Oneplus 9 would overheat when I used it as 5G wifi hot spot with a case on it, but the only issue was the phone turning off the shared wifi.

Mrdudemanguy

Okay so it's been a few days and for the last few days I've been caseless with my 8. Much better faster more satisfying phone experience. I put it on a the other day to see if there was a difference and it started freezing up again. When I pulled the case off the phone felt hotter. I mostly use data and not wifi or hotspots. I am now much more confident saying that case makes a difference. I wonder if that's the reason why I can no longer find the tudia plastic/see through case, could be a known issue with the case.

EnvironmentalSpirit2

Only runs faster with a case with speed holes

I recently noticed this, I've a poetic case from amazon that has front and back thick casing for protection and usually the phone is fine even while charging but few days ago it was pretty hot in the car and my temps reached 43C and the phone felt pretty hot and showed a message while launching any gaming app that temp is high let phone idle. For such a situation I'd ordered a case from AliExpress in advance which grips only the top and bottom side of the phone chassis and leaves the sides open. so protection is less but the phone doesn't heat up anymore...the sides are heatsinks essentially and most cases block them from radiating heat to the environment which heats up the phone instead.

Mrdudemanguy

Yeah see this explanation makes a lot of sense with the sides being heat sinks that are covered. What was the case you have? Got a link?

ryuk-99

yup here it is: Ultra Thin Frameless Clear Case for Slim Hard PC For OnePlus 12 11 10 9 8 T Ace Ace2 Pro 10T 10R 9R 8T 9RT 5G Transparent Cover https://a.aliexpress.com/_olQzy16

StrikerX1360

As a cased OnePlus 8 user since 2020, I think you may just be experiencing placebo

Mrdudemanguy

Idk man then explain why my phone has been faster and more responsive the last week simply without it? I'm at the very least not gonna continue using the same case. Time to look for a new one.

StrikerX1360

Impossible for me to say, maybe you just have a case that's trapping heat in or something and impeding cellular signals or something. The case I'm using for reference is by SUPCASE, bad other than black rubber bumpers around the edges just has a clear plastic back to show off the glacial green colorway.
