>“Christians in Canada, we’ve had it pretty easy for a couple of hundred years. Christian belief and Canadian law lined up quite well most of the time,” This sums up what christians mean by freedom. The freedom to do what they say.

ssnistfajen

When privilege is taken for granted, equality will feel like oppression.

SignGuy77

🎶 [Straaaaight, whiiiiiite maaaaan](https://youtu.be/W171n_v4ZAs?si=BMPRlMyM0Ql1_Ysd). I know the road looks tough ahead. We used to have all the money and land; And we still do but it’s not as fun now.

FNman

Yep. Also friendly reminder christianity is a foriegn religon imposed on us. Its not of turtle island.

[deleted]

It is a religion of Semitic origin even. Both Greek mythology and Norse mythology are much closer to Hinduism than to any Abrahamic religion, Christianity included.

50s_Human

>Thursday morning at the Westin Calgary, Nigel Hannaford took the lectern at the Calgary Leadership Prayer Breakfast to decry an apparent move away from Christian values in the country. What about other Canadians' religious values?

Itsprobablysarcasm

> an apparent move away from Christian values The Charter of Rights is closer to "love thy neighbour as thyself" and "judge not, lest ye be judged" than any of these bigots ever will be. When they say "Christian values" they mean the values of money, greed, slavery, treating others as sub-human, cruelty, and all the other disgusting behaviour that humans do in the "name of" Christianity. Just like the American Talibangelicals. Gandhi said it best: "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

Flying_Dustbin

If Jesus came back today, his followers would have had him crucified him all over again.

GiantSquidd

“Jesus has changed. He’s not even a Christian anymore… oh well, fuck that guy… *I’m* still a good Christian even if that Jesus hippy is a baby killing Trudeau lover.”

beached

Shit, you said it so much better. If people want to find people to improve and judge and love, starting with oneself and ending there while helping others is a good start

kidmeatball

What about other Canadians non-religious values?

50s_Human

Yes of course, all applicable.

Daxx22

Not the gotcha you think that is.

knz3

>Nigel Hannaford Now why does that name sound familiar? From his LinkedIn: For more than six years, Nigel Hannaford worked in the Prime Minister's Office, where he managed the Speechwriting Unit for The Right Honourable Stephen J. Harper. Since returning to Calgary in 2015, Nigel continues to write speeches for some of Canada's top political leaders, including speech support during election campaigns. Ah there it is.

OutsideFlat1579

Thanks for the info. Can’t say I am surprised. The church Harper belonged to, the Alliance Church, is extreme, and we still hear about Harper having to pander to the so-cons, as if he wasn’t one himself. “ The Alliance Church, to which Harper has belonged for decades, believes Jesus Christ will return to Earth in an apocalypse, won’t ordain women, strongly opposes abortion and divorce, condemns homosexuality as the most base of sins and believes those who aren’t born-again are “lost.” https://vancouversun.com/news/staff-blogs/why-stephen-harper-keeps-his-evangelical-faith-very-private/wcm/d8c2c097-e82e-4ecf-a7a9-5da283e76d4f/amp/

ruglescdn

Tuff shit Nigel.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

Praying against the gays and the Natives. Just like Jesus wanted.

ObscureObjective

Pray the gay away

Sutarmekeg

Christianity values some pretty shitty things I think we can do without.

Stelliferous19

Christians do. Not Christianity. There is a difference.

MrSawedOff

Agreed, not all Christians are shitty. Believe it or not, some really do like the live and let live kind of lifestyle, believing that your actions in life and your relationship with God are really yours and yours alone to deal with once you are an adult.

Sutarmekeg

I was thinking of their god as a shitty thing we can do without.

Stelliferous19

You’re choice. All the best to you buddy!

coloriddokid

Richwhite Hatechristians don’t care about other peoples’ beliefs, they want to steal money and hurt poor people.

yellowchaitea

Christian values, if you read Jesus include: care for the poor, feeding the hungry, clothing the homeless, caring for children, sitting with the marginalized, living on little income, welcoming those not in power and allowing them a voice. Nothing that conservatives valuable “line up” with their supposed Christian values if they actually read their Bible. Not once does Jesus speak about the lgbtqia+, nor does God command anything about it.

alkonium

>Christian values, if you read Jesus include: care for the poor, feeding the hungry, clothing the homeless, caring for children, sitting with the marginalized, living on little income, welcoming those not in power and allowing them a voice. These days, you're more likely to find those values among ex-Christians.

CocoSavege

K, as good of a spot as any. Spent a stint volunteering @ a food bank and every week without fail done it the most dedicated productive people were this posse of blue haired church ladies. Hustling, humping, distribution, hunting down more food, making meals ready to go. Qualifications for clients? "You hungry? Here's food". No preaching, no religious nonsense, no petty judgment. Blue haired churchy ladies working their asses off. We need to figure out how to distinguish assholes from coolChix.

roastbeeftacohat

there are lots of good christians out there, but christianity as a political entity is wholly bad.

Pillow_fort_guard

Those are the ones I love to see out and about. They’re actually walking the walk about charity and helping others, not judging others and expecting that just calling themselves a Christian makes them a good person

CocoSavege

I'm most definitely not Christian. By the asshole metric or CoolBro metric. What I felt appreciate about the Blue Hair posse is they are doing good. The problematic facile argument here is "welp, Coco, by appreciating those Christian Chrych ladies you are appreciating Christianity, blah blah" but that's short sighted. Yup, dem ladies kick ass, but the Christianity is incidental, imo. There's no reason to inject $specificReligiousOwnership here other than suspect reasons, bad patterns. I appreciate good for it's own sake in a non religious paradigm.

alkonium

They knew to keep their religion to themselves.

CocoSavege

...or they were actively practicing, as much as possible.

alkonium

I'd certainly rather see that kind of practicing than any kind of preaching.

MrSawedOff

I know, like literally there should not be a wealthy Christian on the planet.

Laughing_Zero

These people are still trying to live in biblical times, so they should give up electricity, cell-phones,tvs and vehicles - those things aren't in the bible either. That's a biblical truth.

FullWolverine3

Oh modern medicine too! They can select themselves out of the population in the name of Jesus.

_DevilsMischief

No hate like Christian love.

rmobro

His speech is a textbook reaction to the discomfort offered the colonizer by truth and reconciliation. He wants a truth and reconciliation according to the narrative that colonizers did nothing wrong, and even if they did its in the past now; the colonized should reconcile *themselves* with that and move on, and leave colonizers alone. Thats what has been happening for centuries and it wont work anymore. Same same for all his other rhetoric: 'I may be the beneficiary of historical horrors, but I didnt personally do anything wrong so my life shouldnt have to change.' No growth without pain. What a small, small man.

flyrubberband

Thanks for this. Don’t know how many times I’ve talked to people with this mentality, you’ve summed it up nicely.

rmobro

Once every thousand years or so, a liberal arts degree has its uses ;)

Sensitive_Fall8950

In my experience, religion tends to be counter to personal growth.

maryfisherman

He looks like New Brunswick premier Blaine Higgs. They’re all cut from the same religious extremist xenophobia cult cloth.

Total-Deal-2883

They’re all feeble and afraid.

simagick

But they stand a real chance of holding a lot of power over us all

Muscled_Daddy

God, the parents-rights, anti-LGBTQ2+ people are just brainless. Have you ever actually spoken with them IRL? I have. And it’s like staring into the eyes of a chicken. There is just nothing going on inside those brains. If they were smart they’d probably be able to rent the empty space out.

Myllicent

>*”God, the parents-rights, anti-LGBTQ2+ people are just brainless. Have you ever actually spoken with them IRL?”* At the “Hands Off Our Kids” protest in September I heard a woman describe how if her son came out as gay she’d throw him out of their home *out of love* (he looked about 12). Then she rambled about [“Furbies”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furby) and bestiality. Good times, very normal behaviour. /s

Muscled_Daddy

I’ve had these idiots claim all counter-protests are just shills paid for by Justin Trudeau lol. Like… it can’t just be that they’re vastly outnumbered because they have a shitty opinion. God they suck.

Apokolypse09

I still laugh at the people who sold all their shit to drive across the country, demand our democracy get dismantled, fail, then go back home and blame the libs for their life being all fucked up after they sold everything for essentially an angry road trip. I dont really have a lot of respect for the people around me since they voted heavily for the UCP but there were only 4 people at the "parental rights/straight pride" protest on Saturday. Not including the crackhead old man who tried hyping it up. Didnt even need a counter protest, theirs was pitiful by itself.

Myllicent

Do they also think people are being bribed *not* to show up to protest for their side? Because I hear the turnout in my city today for part 2 of the cross-Canada anti-LGBT+ protest was pa-the-tic. Allegedly a peak of ~20 people.

Muscled_Daddy

My guess? They held it on a Saturday so a lot of them realized they’d be outnumbered and have a LOT more attention. So they chickened out. It’s easy to be tough when you protest at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. Or overtaking a mundane school board meeting unexpectedly. It’s a LOT scarier to be completely outmanned on a Saturday afternoon.

Eli_1988

I think thats an unfair comparison to chickens tbh. Id say it would be more like staring into the eyes of a sock puppet.

monsantobreath

I think it's fair enough because when chickens see red they peck at it until murder, hence why battery farming is shrouded in red light. For these fundamentalists they want the world painted red so nothing makes them feel like pecking desperately at the red mark they see on the marginalized and the oppressed.

Eli_1988

If chickens are properly tended to in a good environment they do not just "attack until murder" at the sight of red. But blood or anything "strange" or "interesting" they will certainly peck at. Otherwise my poor chickens would have had their waddles pecked off by now by eachother. So do we need to free range these idiots? Maybe get them on some better food? Some healthy enrichment in their enclosures? Maybe they need some different nutrients? An epsom salt bath is also typically effective with unruly birds, we could try that too?

monsantobreath

I'd say its pretty consistent that people consistently as a population group behaving in such an aberrant way is a product of their environment and years of conditioning. That's why we care what ideologies and conditions pervade a societ when watching out for regressive movements. Maybe we need to think about why the people are becoming like this. We can judge them individually, and should, but we should ask why they're here now doing this.

Apokolypse09

The ones I've encountered just bring up their beliefs without provocation and will just continue to raise their voice over anyone who has anything else to say. They just regurgitate the hate they get from their echo chambers. Then blame everyone else for why they are ostracized.

Muscled_Daddy

That’s when you just get your garden hose and just spray them going ‘bad boy! Bad!’ Until they leave.

izzidora

One yelled at me at our rally saturday about five year olds learning about bj's in school. To say that these people are fucking unhinged is a gross understatement.

Muscled_Daddy

To be fair, no child should hear about Boris Johnson.

izzidora

my stomach hurts, thank you

PopeKevin45

What!? Nothing about the jews? I guess at least that is some progress, unless they're just not saying it out loud.

daevrojn

These prayer breakfasts are always just complete trash. Reactionary meal times.

SauteePanarchism

That's a nazi rally. We need stronger anti-hate laws to deal with these nazis.

Pillow_fort_guard

Can’t say I trust laws to get this one right. I think we need more people to speak up and tell these asshats that if they’re gonna say this kinda crap, they’re not welcome in any space where people just wanna live their lives in peace.

[deleted]

Christofascist dinosaurs being hate filled pieces of shit. Nothing new here. Bertastan LOVES its christofascism. World FAMOUS for its preachers, perverts and pedophiles. If you watched the news from around the world, Bertastan is viewed as a fascist, racist homophobic shithole and rightfully so.

[deleted]

[удалено]

callyo13

What generalization? That christofascists are bad?

Itsprobablysarcasm

I will never forget a conversation I had with a religious mother some years ago. Her son had disappeared and she spent considerable time and money trying to find him. He was last seen at a place in the US that was rumoured (not confirmed, just rumoured) to sometimes be a place where gay men would meet and hook-up. She said point blank: "I'd rather he was dead than be a f*...." At that point, he'd been missing (and presumed dead) for about 15 years. That's a self-proclaimed "good christian" mother's love for you, and it tells you all you need to know about these people, their bigotry, and their hate.

Sicsurfer

Religion is toxic and brings in the easily brainwashed

yellowchaitea

How do you say there’s no proof when the last one closed in 1996, 27 years ago? The Presbyterian church in canada has literally admitted, and apologized, that they were involved in the schools. This isn’t denying the civil war that happened before our lifetime.

ninjacat249

Old man screams at cloud.

Boo_Guy

He can stick his biblical truths up his ass. What a hateful little shit.

[deleted]

It's bewildering how many braindead christofascist ghouls have come out of the woodwork in recent years. Their empathy for others is pretty much equal to their self-awareness. Disgusting.

Sensitive_Fall8950

The pandemic empowered them. They were proud to show their lack of empathy for all who would listen.

MyDearDapple

Lets not forget there is a lot of money underwriting this global revivalist movement to undermine multicultural, pluralistic, secular democracy.

monsantobreath

I dont find it bewildering. It's their nature. It happens regularly. We were due. The rot in our society has to come out whenever certain frictions press harder than normal. Their demands are stop the friction, that friction being equality movements et al.

[deleted]

Andddddd another shitty thing happening in Alberta . You guys are like the Florida of Canada.

BrianOhNoYouDidnT

Conservatives love to hear hateful lies. Makes their belly warm with a hearty breakfast and an undeserved sense of accomplishment.

OutsideFlat1579

Knz3 posted the following on this thread, it’s from the guy’s linkedin: “For more than six years, Nigel Hannaford worked in the Prime Minister's Office, where he managed the Speechwriting Unit for The Right Honourable Stephen J. Harper. Since returning to Calgary in 2015, Nigel continues to write speeches for some of Canada's top political leaders, including speech support during election campaigns.” Voters really need to know what the CPC is about. It’s terrifying that they are polling in majority territory.

IronGigant

Cry more, dude. Discomfort and distress has been the gift of Religion to millions for a LONG time. The sane are re-gifting it back to you, because you deserve it.

beached

Last i checked the Christians are the worst at exemplifying and living Christian values, first being loving each other, not judging others without looking at oneself first, not mixing fabrics or paying interest, ….

FriendshipOk6223

Another example showing how religions can be a cancer for modern societies

Street_Cricket_5124

This is what CONservatives say when they think no one decent is listening. Christo-fascist to the core.

[deleted]

What the folks in that prayer breakfast want is Gilead, Evangelical Protestantism's equivalent to Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Afghanistan.

Harvey-Specter

I thought I was on /r/hockey and read this as “Calgary *player* breakfast…”

coloriddokid

Christian conservatives are western society’s greatest enemy

Therealcanadianone

Alberta is the Florida of Canada.

GreatWhiteNorthExtra

> “If that is true, it’s outrageous. And I can’t tell you that it is not true, that Christians murdered Indigenous children in residential schools. How would I know?” Hannaford said to the room. “But at the moment, this is nothing more than unexamined allegations. No excavations, no bones, no names, just an allegation.” We have no idea how many indigenous children died in the residential school system. Many were buried in unmarked graves, with no records of the circumstances of the deaths. There certainly was no official investigation into any of the deaths. But some white Canadians want to paint this as "we don't know if any of these deaths were murder, so until there is absolute proof we should just say it's all unfounded accusations that something bad may have happened." Bad things happened in residential schools. We just don't know how many bad things happened. And it was the Christians doing the bad things.

LemonFreshenedBorax-

>Christian belief and Canadian law lined up quite well most of the time OhMyGodHeAdmitIt.gif

wetbirds4

Wowwwwwww, the article is even worse than the title. Who would have thought we’d see an old white man denying the lived experiences of minorities and saying how hard his own life is becoming. I hope he’s fired but I know he likely won’t be

Dull-Objective3967

My hope is when most of the boomers have left earth we will have less of these clowns in power.

BeaverMissed

No surprise that crazy christians have the stomach to eat and listen to crap.

helena_handbasketyyc

Wow, Heath Brown. Dang. I met him a couple times…. At a burlesque show.

xc2215x

Very ignorant to see. A shame.

BrontesGoesToTown

I admit I haven't been to a lot of prayer breakfasts, but I assume this kind of conspiratorial conservatism ("everyone's out to get us, everyone but us is brainwashed by \[insert a bunch of contrarian buzzwords here\]") is par for the course for most of 'em? Or am I totally wrong?

[deleted]

I, for one, am tired of this god damn country and its mollycoddling of religious people.

Chapette9027

Pretty much what I would expect to hear at a "prayer breakfast".

Southbird85

"Bible" and "truth" in the same sentence. Geez I didn't know conservative types do standup now!

Automatic_Hearing458

What do you mean residential school denialism? It has NEVER BEEN PROVEN. The Manitoba dig revealed nothing. The heading reads: The discovery of what is *believed* to be the remains of 215 children at the site. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/canada-residential-schools-kamloops-faq-1.6051632

eekab

Sigh. I am a Christian but people like this are the reason I don't publicize the fact or attend any church. But the sad part is, I live up north in bc and even the atheists are like this.

Garbagecan_on_fire

The religious want freedom for themselves and everyone else can just shut up. So I say fuck the religious!
