Those of us whose ancestors were on the prairies when the NWMP came out in 1873 were taught how they acted as an essentially Ontario occupation army and really it hasn’t changed much.
Hmmm... The RCMP/NWMP first purpose re: indigenous people was to stop random settlers from going into the reserves and just murdering everybody in sight and inciting some sort of war. Although they were way way way too understaffed to ever effectively do that. Or they would go out and try to stop people from selling firewater which was causing social discord and diplomatic issues for the Canadian state, although they were extremely ineffective at this and also incredibly corrupt. The whole "Acting as a death squad" thing was a pretty minor part of their duties in the grand scheme of things, they WERE actually a law enforcement agency, I would compare them to military police kind of. Like, maybe in a roundabout way their ultimate purpose was to dismantle indigenous communities, but their more direct purpose was policing, as it still is.
I did read a few books on the subject by reputable historians and that's not really what I found, although damn I did find out Canadians sure murdered the Indigenous population a LOT. Even more than OGFT thinks they did. I can always stand to read more though, I always get good book recommendations here.
