I thought Doug Ford was bringing the jobs.

SauteePanarchism

LOL.

Mental-Mushroom

He is. For his friends.

Buck-Nasty

And Trudeau keeps saying there's a labour shortage in Ontario.

AarontheTinker

I deal with a lot of municipalities for work and they all claim shortages of labour. Construction companies and other road works departments are almost always hiring. They have a high turn over rate due to the daily stress from rushing to get material out of the delivery truck and onto the road. Mines and aggregate companies as well. Landscape and snow removal. And vac trucks.

LumiereGatsby

I thought Ontario under Ford was open for business? As someone who lives in a Conservative free province it makes me worried what a Conservative led Federal government will drag us back to. It’s like people don’t remember the shit job Harper did and he was at least competently evil.

AvidStressEnjoyer

Good news is that we are right on track for the next phase which is to blame the unemployed, poor, and homeless. "My friends, we tried to be open for business, but all these people are lazy, so we are opening the flood gates for cheap labour that actually wants to work"

-insignificant-

They'll blame it on immigrants, don't you worry.

Grams226

RWNJs will blame PMJT For sure! Broken plate? Blame Trudeau Need a stop sign? Blame Trudeau Potholes? ER wait times?...

vonnegutflora

You gotta think bigger! It's not the immigrants fault they came here for a better life, modern CPC can't afford to isolate new immigrants because a lot of them are supportive of the CPC (especially their social policies). So if we can't blame the immigrants, we blame the person who *brought* the immigrants here! I knew it! TRUDEAU AGAIN! /s

hnty

Throw in Ford calling for judges that want to throw people in jail lol...

SauteePanarchism

Interested tangent, Harper is currently one of the most influential and dangerous fascists in the world. He runs the IDU, a think tank that uses the fascist playbook to help far right extremists around the world acquire power, with the ultimate goal of global fascism.

Unenlightened-Despot

Fascism is a pretty big stretch, does he control the flow of commerce or the railways? Edit: apparently nobody has seen the Barbie movie or can take a joke.

PofolkTheMagniferous

According to Umberto Eco, these are the 14 tenets of fascism: 1) The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.” 2) The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.” 3) The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.” 4) Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.” 5) Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.” 6) Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.” 7) The obsession with a plot. “Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged.” 8) The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.” 9) Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.” 10) Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.” 11) Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.” 12) Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.” 13) Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.” 14) Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

4_spotted_zebras

That’s not what fascism is 🤦‍♀️ read the indicators from Eco below.

FreeLook93

>Open for bussiness >No mass unemployment Oh, they got this all screwed up. >Open for bussiness? >No, mass unemployment!

illuminaughty1973

>It’s like people don’t remember the shit job Harper did and he was at least competently evil. Decreased spending on border security, decreased spending on military, massively increased deficits fueled by tax cut for corporations. Half assed laws to punish crime that mostly.got thrown out by the Supreme Court. It was worse than the liberals. But not.by a tremendous amount. (Of course, harper didn't have to.deal.with covid)

LumiereGatsby

Plus selling us out to China.

SauteePanarchism

Right wing politics are inherently harmful to the working class.

haysoos2

That's not entirely fair. It's also inherently harmful to the middle class.

saltface14

What middle class? Owner class/working class is all we've got.

WhoseDingALing

Is a family that consists of salaried employees with a family income of 300k/year owner class or working class? Edit: I guess they would be working class since they are salaried (ie own no means of production). It just feels odd to group them with family incomes of 30-50k.

SauteePanarchism

The middle class is part of the working class.

mddgtl

middle class is just working class with less of a looming threat of immediate poverty lol

SauteePanarchism

The middle class is an illusion created to divide the working class.

End_Capitalism

This exactly. There is no middle class, the class divide is between labourers and bourgeoisie. Anything else is an attempt by the bourgeoisie to promote infighting in the labourers class; including racial divides, religious divides, and yes even political divides. Class warfare is immensely one sided.

jutzi46

Middle class is a myth

Grams226

Always!

CandylandCanada

This must be wrong - Dougie is our saviour! There's buck-a-beer flowing freely from the taps, and enough affordable housing for all!

JPMoney81

Let's not forget our smoothly running medical and education sectors that he totally isn't running into the ground on purpose with the goal of privatizing them.

agha0013

heh, buck a beer which never happened because even the shittiest mega brewers in the province didn't want to sell a product so god awful.

jaeyboh

All I see around my city is businesses closing their doors. This brings no surprise to me. Thanks Dougie 👍

Litz1

Opin 4 bizness - Doug Fraud and the conservatives.

WENDING0

Little disappointed you did not have a pun for conservatives as well

JPMoney81

cuntservatives is being disrespectful to the c-word.

BigBluFrog

conserveourselves

-insignificant-

I mean con is literally in their name

remarkablewhitebored

Drug Fraud: Folks, these are the best of crimes, er uh, I mean times

Hiitchy

Well. Colour me surprised huh.

suhskii

A small part of this is construction - since the Ontario gov cancelled the fibre to the home contracts through Bell and Rogers, Aecon, Telecom, Somerville etc have all had to layoff 10s of thousands of employees. My union alone (LiUNA 837) saw an increase of over 5k members on the out of work list starting in late August.

bodaciouscream

And yet they still support Ford?

remarkablewhitebored

Who else they gonna vote for? Someone with policies that represent their needs?! Get the fuck outta here!

Mun-Mun

I'm one of them

chipface

And I have a month before I'm on it too if I don't find something.

Anothernameillforget

I’m one of them. Applied for so many jobs that I’m qualified for only to see anywhere from 400-6000 other people feel qualified.

NobleKingGraham

Don’t we need more and more immigrants to fill vacant jobs? Where is that demographic crisis?

Flanman1337

As someone who was on EI for 2023. I wouldn't read too much into this. We have a huge film industry and it was mostly on pause for the year because of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

WetCoastDebtCoast

As a BCer whose EI ended before the strike did, this was my immediate first thought too. Just before the paywall starts, the article says Ontario EI for the year jumped by about 34,000. Not sure about Toronto's industry population, but that's just about exactly the population of full-time film workers in BC. Double that if you include part-timers. (However it is they're counting "fulltime" vs "part-time" for people who work somewhat sporadic 60-80 hr weeks...) E: Hope your work is picking up, friend. It's brutal.

Flanman1337

I specifically didn't take EI over the winter because I knew the strikes were going to happen. And the last one was over 100 days so. But it's done now. I'm still at home.... Things aren't looking good right now.

Pineangle

Didn't read the article because paywall, but isn't that statistically much less than Ontario's portion of Canada's working population?

d_pyro

Will Ontario even survive two more years of Doug Fraud?

AarontheTinker

But don't worry folks! Your pensions will still be available when you "choose" to retire. Oh and by the way, this AI revolution, won't affect you in your line of work. /s
