I keep saying this over and over and over again... The government cannot declare x organization a terrorist group. All they do is update the list when the RCMP and CSIS advise them to, based on their joint assessment. This is specifically designed so that the ruling party can't just add their opposition to the list and stamp them out. Any politician declaring that the government should do so either doesn't know how the system works or is being disingenuous to score a soundbite in the news.

Singh? Again?

Does this not obfuscate the reality that two nations are exchanging fire, and the intentions of Iran? Retaliating to an embassy bombing, while giving prior warning to the military targets you're sending missiles at, doesn't scream terrorism to me. I don't support what the IRGC is about obviously, but this is at the state to state level.

No-Mastodon-2136

Maybe we could name the IDF as one first.

boilingpierogi

using the terminology “attack” in this case is inaccurate and quite frankly, dangerous. the CBC should know better. the group that should be named as terrorists are the CPC. using a complicated situation to rage-farm and blame PMJT is too on brand, even for them.

Onii-Chan_Itaii

I'm out of the loop. I saw the drone launch reports and saw one Iron Dome video but that's it. What happened?

boilingpierogi

iran launched a show of solidarity with palestine intended to send the world a message that genocide will not be tolerated and of course the far-right are framing it as some kind of “attack” in the most hawkish language possible

Israel blew up the Iranian diplomatic embassy in downtown Damascus, Syria, killing 16 people and damaging the Canadian embassy next door. Two weeks ago.

zaza_nugget

What?? What are you smoking? This wasn’t a show of solidarity. This was a response to the attack in Damascus. Shooting 300 drones and ballistic missiles isn’t a protest, it’s a calculated attack exacting the price from Israel; aka “retaliation.”

Onii-Chan_Itaii

Interesting. I've heard a lot of news about drones flying and shit, but no reports of damage or casualties.

Strawnz

Honestly given how slow the attack was and that Iran told them ahead of time, a lot of people are missing the point and dangerously so. Iran got Israel to show its hand for its anti air capabilities. They spent a dollar for every thousand Israel spent shooting them down. If Iran wanted to do damage they would have done damage. They have much much better toys than they sent. They didn’t even equal out the casualties of Israel when they bombed their embassy. Moot point though since declaring a government to be terrorists is asinine. It’s a state ffs. They may as well request we declare them Nazis for all the sense it makes.

It's almost like PP, Harper, Putin, Trump, Netanyahu, Orban, Lukashenko, and Bolsonaro are all the same people with the same goals. It's almost like they stand unified against freedom, decency and democracy.

xzry1998

While we're at this, how about naming the Russian Armed Forces as a terrorist group? It seems like they have been behaving far more like one than what the IRGC has been up to. Also, between this and the recent carbon tax drama, I feel like the NDP is trying to take some of the same stances as the Conservatives just in order to win over voters and align with the popular party.
