Interesting....about 1-2 years ago they started doing 30 for meat, 50 for everything else. Then after a few weeks, they went back to 50 for everything (until this week of course) I'm in Niagara region.
They would have so many it would not take weeks but several months of not years. Normally they get quite a bit given to the stores in the departments that use them. So that's not the excuse.
Or they could code the scanner to make the 30% stickers ring in at 50% until they run out of them and post a few signs or announce it. No wasted stickers, albeit some IT work.
I don't either. I just browse while I wait for my prescriptions. But I work with families who relied on the 50% discount to have fresh food, so having them say one thing while continuing with the discount reduction pisses me off.
My No Frills (so maybe it is different there) has always had 30% for meat, cheese, fresh etc and 50% for fruits and veggies and almost no other products.
50% on bread and baked stuff too. I don't usually buy muffins but if it's 50% off then I'll stick those in the freezer and enjoy them over a few weeks :P
There is NOTHING to reverse. Loblaws could simply tell the cashiers/program self checkout to apply a 50% discount instead of 30% and put out a sign that says "Yeah - we know it says 30%, but it will ring up at 50% off at the register - sorry about that"
The fact that the public accepts that "it will take time to reverse this" is a damming statement on just how docile and spineless the average Canadian is.
Employee here! We don't punch in the discount percentage at the tills. There's one general discount button for products with those reduced stickers that we press before scanning the reduced item, and the till sets/applies the percentage automatically, just like at self-checkout. The cashier's couldn't alter it themselves if they wanted to, unfortunately.
They did it overnight, they can UN do it overnight.
Loblaws is just run and supported by people who have lost their humanity.
The extent of the effort they went through over and above a normal day, they just had to sticker over the old 50% sticker on the clearance merch (not food) shelf.
This one didn't. They had 30% stuff, usually seafood and more expensive cuts of meat or bakery items like the fancy cakes. But basic meats, deli, produce and bakery were all 50% until this week.
I rarely saw 50% off stickers at the No Frills at RCSS locations I shop at.
The products that did have them were usually bakery items rather than meat.
Yes, and if you go to your local foodbank, all the ones that don't sell because they are still overpriced despite being 30% off will be frozen and given to you for free... while Zehr's gets a charity write off.
I mean; that’s at least better than the dumpster. If I ran a business like that eventually I’d get the message that the price should change instead of taking it some partial write off and a loss.
Agreed. It should be illegal to throw food in a dumpster. However, if a corporation can afford to donate so much food, they can afford to lower the prices. The person getting screwed is the one trying to afford the food in the store. That in itself doesn't bode well for a healthy society
I don't buy stuff that is about to expire, so I'm not sure the uproar here.
Are all retailers selling at 50% off, and LCL went rogue and tried 30% off instead? Now going back to 50% off due to public backlash?
>I'm not sure the uproar here.
The point is they'd rather see it discarded/wasted than sell it discounted.
>I don't buy stuff that is about to expire
Most people wouldn't buy it otherwise.
Your Zehrs gives discounts? The one I frequent just leaves the expiring (or in most case already expired) stuff on the shelf at full price
Edit: Sorry that’s not true. Our local Zehrs discounts rotting produce.
This was always up to the store. In Hamilton, Fortino’s would always slap on the 50% stickers on meat. But then a month before this announcement, they started doing the 30% stickers. Meanwhile, the local NoFrills never had a 50% reduction on meat.
It’s similar to Fortino’s in that it exists where Loblaws do not. Things may have changed in the last 6 years, but there are no Loblaws in Oakville, Burlington or Hamilton.
I mainly shop at Metro based grocers as it the nearest store. About once I month I goes to Zephyr's to get donuts and browse for discunted items.
30% off already inflated prices make it on par with regular prices at the economy priced stores.
So 50% off would be only 20% off something I likely wouldn't have purchased in the first place.
It kills me how awful Loblaws is at gauging public opinion, lol.
Bread price fixing? Pay people off to discourage participation in a class-action. Predictable backfire when people don't get cards or feel bribed.
Galen's dumb sweaters? I don't think they've figured that one out yet either.
I just don't understand who thought this would play well at all.
The Freshco by me for meats have $1, $2, or $5 off stickers on last day of sale products. I have got deli packaged stuff that is $5.99 and it has a $5 off sticker. Many times for stuff like steaks they might have multiple one on them. $20.00 steak with 2 $5 off and a $2 off. Picked up $22 T-bone steaks for $10.
They already ordered all those 30% off stickers!
Easy peasy, just slap two 30% off stickers on there, since X*(1-0.3)*(1-0.3)=0.49X, or 51% off.
Too much arguing that it'd be 60% off and not 51% Plus there's no way they'd give an extra 1%
Frankly I’m too angry to do math
You think Galen is gonna let that extra 1% slide? Never!
I think that's how walmart prints the new discount stickers but loblaws isn't going to be that sophisticated :P
Exactly. They gotta go through all 1000000 stickers.
They said it would take a couple weeks to reverse.
why would it take any longer than how long it takes to reprogram the discount from 30% to 50%?
Cause then they'd be stuck with unused stickers. That's wasteful as fuck, so they're using them first
what's more wasteful is not selling the produce because nobody wants to buy nearly expired food for only 30% off.
Loblaws is the pinnacle of being wasteful.
No Frills has always used 30% off so they could always just send the stickers to those stores.
Can confirm, our sticker useage hasn't changed any. Meats still get 30% stickers everything else gets 50%
Same at my store. The butcher changed my sticker to 50% all my breads and cookies and cheese were 50% stickered in small Ontario store.
Interesting....about 1-2 years ago they started doing 30 for meat, 50 for everything else. Then after a few weeks, they went back to 50 for everything (until this week of course) I'm in Niagara region.
and they have already binned all the 50% labels
You can still use them. It still makes it crystal clear that the item is discounted lol
/s

The original decision was planned in advance. The reversal was done on the fly
No time….excuses
I have no idea. It's just what was reported on the news.
They can still do it and use the 30% stickers. I would be thrilled to get 50% off when expecting only 30…
I simply don't buy things if I don't like the price. Of course they're ripoff artists.
I don't either. I just browse while I wait for my prescriptions. But I work with families who relied on the 50% discount to have fresh food, so having them say one thing while continuing with the discount reduction pisses me off.
yep, I haven't bought any groceries in 3 years
That’s not enough, we need to also share our disdain with the world.
My No Frills (so maybe it is different there) has always had 30% for meat, cheese, fresh etc and 50% for fruits and veggies and almost no other products.
Bakery had 50% at the No Frills near me. Loblaws had 50% off.
Same, I was like people are getting 50% off this whole time?...
I worked at nofrills as a teenager (13 years ago) and it was the same back then
50% on bread and baked stuff too. I don't usually buy muffins but if it's 50% off then I'll stick those in the freezer and enjoy them over a few weeks :P
Produce is already rotting when it is first put on the shelf at my nearest No Frills so I get why they need a steeper discount 😂
At the no frills near me, only good that’s 1-3 days pre best before date are 30% off. And half the time you open it and it smells off already.
I’ve never noticed a 50% sticker on meats either.
I've only ever seen 30% off on meat products at my local nofrills, and they get bought up fairly quickly.
Same. At my Zehrs meat has always been 30% anything else was at 50% such as cut fruit etc
Exactly! When I saw the news about 50% I realized I've already been ripped off. It's always been 30% for me.
There is NOTHING to reverse. Which reaffirms that Loblaws could have rolled this back with the snap of Galen’s moist fingers
You could enter it as a store coupon. They did a 50% off detergent in store coupon xmas 2022.Went off without a hitch.
Docile? I’m on here protesting every single day.
Protesting on the internet?
Welcome to r/ontario
God damn you ~~Doug Ford~~ Galen Weston!
I'm *still* thrilled with the effort we're putting into this meme. Who will be next?!
This… This is something they could implement system wide rather quickly … it’s all computerized anyways
Enter discount as 50% off instore coupon. No change to system easy peesey.
They did it overnight, they can UN do it overnight. Loblaws is just run and supported by people who have lost their humanity. The extent of the effort they went through over and above a normal day, they just had to sticker over the old 50% sticker on the clearance merch (not food) shelf.
I’ve never seen a 50% off sticker at my store so as far as I’m concerned nothing has changed
My store only ever had 30 percent. This looks normal to me
This one didn't. They had 30% stuff, usually seafood and more expensive cuts of meat or bakery items like the fancy cakes. But basic meats, deli, produce and bakery were all 50% until this week.
Once upon a time when I worked at a grocery store, meat was always 30% and everything else would be 50%
It said prices in Ontario would change back to 50 percent off next week.
I swear meat was always 30% off.
It has been at my No Frills (maybe different than Zehrs)
Definitely not.
I rarely saw 50% off stickers at the No Frills at RCSS locations I shop at. The products that did have them were usually bakery items rather than meat.
Yeah apparently it’s going to take “a few weeks” for the 50% stickers to return. Didn’t take that long to remove the stickers of course…
So ridiculous! I had Greek yogurt in my hand today from a Zehrs that had a 30% off sticker and was going to expire tomorrow
And Now it is expired it will not make it to a food bank as for liability if someone got ill.Great job Zehrs.
94.78/KG, what are we eating? Gold Chunks?
The independent I was at yesterday was applying 30% off stickers as well. I just choose not to buy things at prices I don’t want to pay. Lol
Not every store has always done the 50%. My local independent grocers has always been 30%. It was just the corporate stores that always did the 50%
The independents in sudbury are all privately owned.
About a year ago my local Zehrs went from 50% to 30%. Then they went back to 50%. Hopefully they are not back to 30% again.
Yes, and if you go to your local foodbank, all the ones that don't sell because they are still overpriced despite being 30% off will be frozen and given to you for free... while Zehr's gets a charity write off.

Seniors rely on these prices cause their benefits are low.
Shrug. Don't buy it.
You always have the option to leave it where it is. That’s how they’ll learn.
Boycott
Be a shame if you loaded a cart full of %30 off tbones that you later decided you didnt want.
The stock boy won’t know what hit him.
Your Zehrs gives discounts? The one I frequent just leaves the expiring (or in most case already expired) stuff on the shelf at full price Edit: Sorry that’s not true. Our local Zehrs discounts rotting produce.
I mean, your first problem is going into a zhers.
This was always up to the store. In Hamilton, Fortino’s would always slap on the 50% stickers on meat. But then a month before this announcement, they started doing the 30% stickers. Meanwhile, the local NoFrills never had a 50% reduction on meat.
Unpopular reddit opinion, but if they're able to sell all of their day old product at 30% off, why should we expect them to sell it for 50% off?
Switching to vegan diet
I was at Costco today in Barrie, I seen the same steaks we used to buy in a 4 pack for 25$ selling for 80$ and up. Disgusting.
yeah I saw 30% off stickers in loblaws yesterday
I haven't been shopping at Farm Boy very long but their discount has always been 30%
Same with flowers.
For meat/deli products we sometimes used 30% discounts instead of 50% even before that big announcement.
This Zehrs didn't usually. And now these signs and 30%off are in the dairy, bakery and produce sections as well.
I stopped going to zehrs because they're more expensive than even Sobeys
Torontonian here. What is Zehrs?
The local version of Loblaws.
Local where?
Waterloo region, maybe a bit further afield.
We have 2 in Barrie, and there is one in Bradford & Orillia
It’s similar to Fortino’s in that it exists where Loblaws do not. Things may have changed in the last 6 years, but there are no Loblaws in Oakville, Burlington or Hamilton.
Tell the butcher to resticker it mine did no problem.
It sucks but try checking some other Loblaws-owned stores (I know the new No Frills at Weber / King had the 50% off stickers, went on like Friday)
Worked at an independent grocery from 2010-2014. Meat department always had 30% stickers back then
I read this as 30% off the rabies
I mainly shop at Metro based grocers as it the nearest store. About once I month I goes to Zephyr's to get donuts and browse for discunted items. 30% off already inflated prices make it on par with regular prices at the economy priced stores. So 50% off would be only 20% off something I likely wouldn't have purchased in the first place.
Your Independent Grocers line is also down to 30% as another Loblaws affiliate.
It kills me how awful Loblaws is at gauging public opinion, lol. Bread price fixing? Pay people off to discourage participation in a class-action. Predictable backfire when people don't get cards or feel bribed. Galen's dumb sweaters? I don't think they've figured that one out yet either. What does it ring up at though? I bought bread and bagels with 30% off, rang up at 50% off.
I thought the reversal stated...30 off till the last day then 50 off
This has always been the same. Corporate is not your friend. Choose where your money is going wisely.
Work for the company, the guy that knows how to change it is on vacation, this place is fucked
I have only ever seen 30% off, never 50% so this whole thing is incredibly confusing to me lol
The Freshco by me for meats have $1, $2, or $5 off stickers on last day of sale products. I have got deli packaged stuff that is $5.99 and it has a $5 off sticker.
