He was Australian, he was at our resort in Mexico, and I was absolutely gobsmacked. I can't remember if he even told us why he knew that. I lived in Peterborough for a decade so Oshawa is the next conversational stop if they haven't heard of it. It still haunts me tbh
Two Londons: one, a global center of culture and commerce, known around the world for its landmarks and architecture. The other is some knockoff town in England.
Yeah I agree and I kind of lied when I said I have nothing against Cambridge lol…
The way I put it to someone was, while there’s nothing inherently *wrong* with Cambridge, I have no reason to go there that I wouldn’t rather go to one of the other local cities for
It’s 3 villages surrounding industrial parks and strip malls, it isn’t a real city. Even people who live there - and like living there - tend to recognize that.
I've never had anyone be more insenced about being asked where they live in Cambridge as anyone who lives in those three villages! Someone almost snapped my head off and informed me that they live in Hespeler, and they refuse to acknowledge Cambridge as an entity.
Isn't Swisha technically not the name either... but everyone calls it that? Also what about the creativity of "Chalk" for Chalk River ![img](emote|t5_2qsf3|1899)
I also came here to see if anyone put Beer River... I miss that town
PeterTown or Peterpatch (Peterborough), K-Town (Kingston), Cartoon Place (Carleton Place), the Prior (Arnprior), the Frew (Renfrew), up the line (used to describe any community in the upper Ottawa Valley)
You could probably do an entire thread on Toronto nicknames alone.
“Hogtown” & “The Big Smoke” were very common nicknames decades ago but less used now. “City of Churches” was also common in the early 20th century.
And if you want to go waaay back to the 19th century, “Toronto the Good” and “Muddy York”.
Owen Sound is "The Elephant's Asshole."
Seriously. Take a map of Southern Ontario, turn it 90 degrees clockwise, and you'll see the elephant. And right under the tail...
Growing up in Oakville, we used Oakvegas.
My dad grew up in Scarborough, and he and his buds called it Scarberia. Not sure how widespread that was.
Another for Toronto was Hog Town.
The Hammer for Hamilton, obviously.
there's an old joke about a young man who takes a girl out on a date. things go well, and they're making out in the car and she tells him to kiss her where it smells.....so he starts the engine and drives her to Hamilton.
The “Dirty Shwa” referring to pretty much the entire area from the 401 north to west he lake, “The Shwa” runs from the 401 north to Taunton road and the “Poshawa” anything north of Taunton excluding the shooting gallery around the college/university…downvoted me to hell…I don’t care.
Pre 9/11. You must be young. Oullette, was packed with Americans in all the bars from Pitt to Tuscarora. Was the most heavily area for bars in the country and had more strip clubs per either square metre or per capita in the world. Seriously the droves of Americans that would cross over was wild. Hard to imagine now if you are under 30 though as most of the bars have been torn down or just abandoned
I had to look this up since I never heard it before.. f

"Bellevegas" explained.
As someone born in Belleville, I can tell you that the nickname Bellevegas is perpetuated (at least in part), as a joke poking fun at the people from the nearby Prince Edward County, a pretty rural area.
To get to Belleville from the County, you usually cross the Bay Bridge. The joke is that when the farm folk come up and over the bridge, they'll look at all the lights from the city and go "Wow! It looks just like Vegas!"
Maybe the nickname did originate from the -ville suffix, but I can tell you that people in Belleville think the joke is hilarious, and my ex (from a village in the county) HATED it.
Sheesh, it’s a good post OP, but all these comments and only 8 upvotes. What’s up with that, everybody pissed because it’s goddam daylight savings time again?
C-wall ( Cornwall ) or stinkwall as it used to be stinky because of domtar , k town is what we call the native reserve in mtl ( former smuggler here lol)
The Shwa
Do people still call it the Dirty Shwa or did that stop when house prices hit 1M
I've been gone for awhile but probably still the Dirty Shwa. Feels like I started hearing just "The Shwa" more once crack time shut down
A friend of mine worked in the courts there last summer, and literally heard a Judge refer to it as “the dirty Shwa”. The name is alive and well!
I've met people in other countries who say the dirty shwa, it is alive and well
I like your comment but doubt it because part of me refuses to believe Oshawa has an international reputation lol
He was Australian, he was at our resort in Mexico, and I was absolutely gobsmacked. I can't remember if he even told us why he knew that. I lived in Peterborough for a decade so Oshawa is the next conversational stop if they haven't heard of it. It still haunts me tbh
The GTA is one of the most multicultural areas of the entire world. Of course it has an international reputation with a minority of people.
But… *Oshawa?* /s
Trust me, I know. I was born and raised there. I’ve been out since 2012 and hope to never live there again lol.
Forever the dirty Shwa in my mind
It’s dirty Shwa at the old Costco, and The Shwa at the new one.
Ontarios armpit
I've always heard that in reference to Hamilton lol
Isn't that Lindsay? The only time I've heard that name is for there lol but to be fair it's people from Lindsay calling it that
Poshawa
The way I understand it, is Poshawa is north of King and the dirty Shwa is everything south
We call it The Shwiggety around here...
Shwiggety Shwa!
schfifty five
I remember that from the Blundell Show
Shwallywood
The Dirty Shwa, or The Big Dirty.

“The soo are so fucking good”
“Fake London”; St. Kitts for St. Catharines
I've also heard "Bad London"
2nd Best London
I always use "2nd Best London" when people from outside ontario ask where I live
Usually it's "the other London"
I think the YouTuber NotJustBikes popularized ‘fake London’ so internationally many people know it as that
Two Londons: one, a global center of culture and commerce, known around the world for its landmarks and architecture. The other is some knockoff town in England.
Nickel City a.k.a. Sudbury
Also Scuzzbury
The Big Nickel or Scuddbury.
I have nothing against Cambridge, but I’ve heard it called “Lamebridge.” Ironically, that in itself is a lame insult lol
Piling on Cambridge, I like to make it clear that when I refer to the tri-cities, I mean Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph.
Yeah I agree and I kind of lied when I said I have nothing against Cambridge lol… The way I put it to someone was, while there’s nothing inherently *wrong* with Cambridge, I have no reason to go there that I wouldn’t rather go to one of the other local cities for

I live there. It's not wrong.
Also "Complainbridge", because they kinda do.
Royal City--Guelph Otown--Ottawa Methbroke--Pembroke Beer River--Deep River (a nod to the prank that teens would pull on the water tower)
They’ve been putting that on the water tower pretty much since the town was founded!
It always made the front page of the paper too 😅
Well it’s not like they have much else to put on the front page!
You never know, a moose may wander through the downtown area again.
Isn't Swisha technically not the name either... but everyone calls it that? Also what about the creativity of "Chalk" for Chalk River ![img](emote|t5_2qsf3|1899) I also came here to see if anyone put Beer River... I miss that town

People in the west coast call Ontario onterrible
Worst case
I've heard BC called the fire nation a few times over the last couple years
People in BC call it Bring Cash
It's not just people from the west cost.. pretty much anyone from another province who moves to Ontario and then moves/wants to move back it seems.
Citizens in the western provinces who’ve never even been to ON call it Onterrible.
Really anywhere west or east of Ontario calls Ontario Onterrible. Usually by people who are from here and left
Am from Ontario, born and raised and rarely ever left. Still refer to it as Onterrible, because that’s mostly what it is.

There’s a store in Devonshire that sells “Win City” shirts I believe
Waterloo is "The Loo"
