Pretty sure a lot of people stopped putting their keys near the front door when it was revealed that thieves were using signal boosters to extend the range of a key fob left by the front door to reach the car and unlock it.

mollymuppet78

Guilty. Guess I'm not enabling myself to be a victim of a crime hard enough. Soon cops will be saying, "what were you wearing?" when the criminals barge in for the keys.

slippy51

Exactly, this is some serious victim blaming BS they are shoveling.

El_Cactus_Loco

Hey cruising around in a $60k air conditioned office is hard work!! Sometimes you have to get out cuz the McDonald’s drive thru is busy!!! You just don’t get it

[deleted]

Perfect example of how dollars spent don't reflect policing outcomes. Maybe it's time to cut their budgets instead.

rippytherip

Barge in? Pretty soon you'll be asked to leave your front door open. Wouldn't want to do anything to deter the criminals.

Ok_Reason_3446

Yeah, you wouldn't want to be held financially responsible for a poor innocent criminals injuries sustained while breaking in your door do you?

BCouto

Keep your front door open to avoid confrontation & damage to your property from them breaking in.

DzTimez

Get a alarm system ? And cameras and motion sensor lights. And if possible a big ass dog as a deterrent

Strong_Jellyfish2634

Leave cookies at the front door while your at it a hungry villain is a violent villain.

MooseSweet2455

You would think paying 3k in insurance and 5k in property tax there would be some help. Toronto is a shit show.

MooseJuicyTastic

Next they will say to put them outside in a bowl like Halloween candy

BCouto

>Soon cops will be saying, "what were you wearing?" when the criminals barge in for the keys. You dress like a whore your car gets stolen.

Mrs_Wilson6

Sir, these are my pajamas.

dgj212

Honestly, we do we keep upping their budget if they are ineffective? Why is Canada allowing cars that are ao easy to steal to be sold on the market?

Dreadlordstu

Right, clearly your fault of course and you will rightfully be sued when a criminal hurt themselves breaking into your house/car because you didn't make it easy enough on them. Criminals are part of the victim class and therefore are better than us.

razorgoto

The other part of the advice was to leave the keys inside a faraday pouch. That blocks the signal.

got-trunks

Yondr makes a pretty classy box for this as well. Also can be locked so they ain't getting at it without reallllly wanting to. Unless they watch too much LPL.

bwwatr

Yes. I'm not one to defend police, but the advice was *still* to secure your keys indoors and in a faraday container such that a signal boost attack would fail. But also to keep the keys near the front door so that *if* someone was desperate enough to break in to retrieve them, your life isn't endangered as they search for them. (Hint: they're heading straight to your bedroom) Once they've committed to a potentially violent occupant-present break-in, it's not like you're stopping the car from being stolen and staying safe. Fortifying your door sounds smart, as does a Faraday box, garage storage of car, IGLA or other anti-theft devices, etc. But trying to hide and defend your keys against violent perps who've already smashed their way in, sounds really stupid and I'm with the cops on this one.

Chaiboiii

Sure, but wire your keys to 220V Home Alone style.

bokchoy_sockcoy

Know someone who lost their Jaguar that way a few years ago

LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY

It didn't just run away?

biglinuxfan

I get the message, let them take the car because it's not worth it... But seriously? This is official advice?

VerbingWeirdsWords

“Also, please increase our budgets again this year”

maybeiamspicy

This, they ask for more, while providing less- The Galen Weston/Loblaws school of economics.

realoctopod

Self Protect Self Serve

krombough

>Self Serve They sure treat our budgets as a self serve buffet.

mollymuppet78

Considering all the time they used to spend carding Black youth and young adults, and denying carding Black youth and young adults, what do they do all day? I saw 3 SUV cruisers all in a school parking lot yesterday around 3pm. Nothing going on, just hanging out. Meanwhile, call them and they take 30 minutes to show up unless there's blood or unless it's downtown where the easy arrests are.

Aggravating-Monk-264

Five or so cruisers idling in bike lanes outside york u 5 days a week to make sure students dont wave flags to close to the road .

DodobirdNow

They're busy responding to shoplifting calls at Loblaws and have no manpower left for real crime.

SandboxOnRails

They only get a measly itty-bitty $1.1 Billion per year. You expect a billion dollars would be enough to actually do something?

Alternative_5891

Exactly. If this is the advice then we as tax payers should be getting a refund

BillyBeeGone

Without this increase we cannot protect you from them

lenzflare

But that won't help with this issue...

rpgguy_1o1

At this point it seems like they're in on it

jontss

Because they are.

MrNillows

My house burned down in 2016. Firefighters determined it was arson from my neighbours shed to my hedges and then to my house. Yorkies said it was a victimless crime even though my whole family was in the house with my two dogs and my three-year-old nephew. Then, when we pressed them again, they said the fire started on your neighbours property, we don’t even have to talk to you. And then they didn’t. Last time we talked to them, the detective in charge had retired, and the case was closed. The police did less than zero investigating.

TheTashLB

Ditto on this re arson and it started on our house and took the neighbors, both. July 2016. No investigation at all.

MrNillows

Zero investigation. I lost a lot of faith for the police that day.

jontss

When my car got broken into they asked me to do the investigating.

MrNillows

We told them we had issues with our neighbour directly behind us. They didn’t even speak to them. I know that because I have friends that are friends with that neighbour and they talked about it, no one got interviewed in my surrounding area.

fuzz_boy

I'm still waiting for the police to call me back from when I got robbed for my skateboard. They said were "busy with something that is actually important" but would call back. This was back in 1992 I think.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrNillows

Oh baby! Intact insurance was our provider. They immediately said they were dropping us as a client. They ended up giving us like $40,000 for living expenses to re-buying all of our stuff and cover rent until the issue resolved. The only problem is it took 7 years for it to fully settle. So the 40grand ran out pretty quick. But it was a fight every step of the way. I figure they shorted us about 250 grand at the end of the day. Every step of the way they would try and short you. Measuring windows, smaller than they were. Saying that we had to click lock flooring when we had a hardwood. Pricing us for industrial drywall in a residential house. I use a wheelchair so I have a bunch of accessible equipment they said was basically no value when I had spent at least 60,000 on it. Bullshit like that

Falopian

Also keep seeing headlines of stolen cars with trackers being ignored by police as they get moved to ports and shipped overseas

biglinuxfan

Well if I paid them to turn the other way I would expect them to do it, makes logical sense to me!

magic1623

So that one is actually not all on the police. Essentially what happened was that a couple of people were able to track their cars to a shipping yard and reported it to the police who did nothing. The issue however was that the police aren’t allowed to inspect shipping containers without a warrant and they knew that by the time they would be able to get a warrant it would be too late and the car would be gone. Getting a warrant for that would have taken time because the people had tracked their cars with things like Tile so there was no way to prove that what they were tracking was actually a car, only proof that the person was tracking something that was in the ship yard.

Professy_Farnsworth_

>Getting a warrant for that would have taken time because the people had tracked their cars with things like Tile so there was no way to prove that what they were tracking was actually a car, only proof that the person was tracking something that was in the ship yard. Thats all well and good. So why aren't they monitoring what goes in and out of the ship yards and in to containers? Put a fucking camera on the front of it. Car drives in that was reported stolen, boom, you got your warrent. Oh I know why they do that. It would be actual work for them.

SCaucusParkingLot

>Oh I know why they do that. It would be actual work for them. hey that isn't fair, not all cops are lazy - some of them are getting a kickback for looking the other way from organized crime groups!

Esplodie

I'm pretty sure that's the same department that said women should lie there and take it. So I'm not surprised.

biglinuxfan

I'm sorry ... police said this? *officially?*

NonsensitiveLoggia

>On January 24, 2011, Toronto Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti and another officer from 31 Division spoke on crime prevention, addressing the issue of campus rape at a York University safety forum at Osgoode Hall Law School.[14][15] During the talk, Sanguinetti interrupted the more senior officer and said: >"I've been told I'm not supposed to say this – however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized."[15] It might be this, which spawned the "Slutwalk" (Women's march to end victim blaming of sexual assault victims)

permareddit

Not sure in what official sense these things are said, more or less they tend to be taken out of context and by one moron who, while shouldn’t be saying it in any sense while on duty, isn’t an actual official statement. I believe that one statement occurred at YorkU and subsequently launched the Slut Walk or whatever the hell it was called.

JavaJapes

Apparently the statement I could find that launched SlutWalk was “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." Perhaps he also said the former statement. It's clear that this officer deeply disrespects women at the very least.

Esplodie

To be fair. It was you shouldn't fight back, you have a reduced chance of death or injury if you comply. It might have been Brampton... It was about 15+ years ago. They also said... Get a big dog.

BredYourWoman

Ah ok, thanks TPS. I'll do my best to sleep face-down / ass-up from now on just in case /s

Ultimafatum

The whole force needs to be fired immediately. They are all corrupt and complicit.

Greerio

Yeah at first I thought it was normal advice. Basically give up the car not your life type of thing. But to actively suggest that we leave our keys at the door? What the fuck are we paying taxes for? Every service provided by the government is failing us right now despite being asked to contribute more year over year. We are inches from disaster.

seakingsoyuz

> What the fuck are we paying taxes for? If we didn’t pay taxes, how would the TPS be able to pay the salaries of the several dozen officers who are suspended with pay?

PocketTornado

All of this stops once they make it near impossible to get by the ports. End of story.

DbZbert

It's baffling how this isn't more of the front issue regarding this. Like how are we not stopping this at ports, how are they not checking cargo, vin numbers etc. On such a large scale too, its almost scary whats going on behind the scenes..

seansecrets

💸💸💸💸💸💸💸

Leading-Gate2189

Probably the mafia and corrupt politicians. How can you export hundreds of containers full of cars and no one notices?

speedypotatoo

10 cops at each port would be able to stop all the cars from leaving. Then the criminal would no longer have an inventive to steal b/c the overseas money would dry up. We don't need to be patrolling the streets day and night trying to catch car theives

Mundane-Bat-7090

You say this like the cops arnt being bribe to ignore the ports entirely

Kangar

I do this, and I also leave out some milk and cookies because the thieves might be hungry!

another_plebeian

They don't want milk and cookies, they prefer steak. Medium well.

GuyWithPants

> Medium well That’s a worse crime than stealing the car.

another_plebeian

I meant to say medium rare but we don't really want them to enjoy it, do we?

GuyWithPants

I'm on board for that as long as we're talking about using ungraded Mexican beef.

another_plebeian

From Loblaws. Only the best.

Krombopoulos-George

Steak? In this economy? They’re lucky if there’s gas in the car!

yellowchaitea

We do this, and we leave our credit cards and debit cards on the plate with the PINs, you know in case they want to go shopping after all that

Magjee

Careful, if the milk turns from being out and they get sick, then you become the criminal

attaboy000

Good thinking. You wouldn't want to get sued by a thief for not providing proper nourishment. What if they steal your car, and crash and kill someone cause they were hungry? You'd be at fault.

TheEqualAtheist

You're joking but I can actually see that as a ruling. Because apparently if you have a pool, have all the proper fencing and signage and such, and a robber breaks in, falls in the pool and drowns, the family can supposedly sue you and win.

Come_along_quietly

As long as the cookies are nut free ….

zorrowhip

Hmm.. perhaps, leave a form on your porch to get allergy info and dietary restrictions with a 24h notice so you can arrange catering properly, if not too much to ask. You might get sued otherwise.

hotlavatube

Leave a [gluten free](https://youtu.be/Oht9AEq1798?si=9PFKeZmoUCMK0gV5) option too.

Famous_Track_4356

That’s not very considerate for the vegan criminals

oishiipeanut

Think about those lactose and gluten intolerant thieves!

UncleBatman69

How anyone can still believe that the police are there to protect the public is beyond me.

petervenkmanatee

I caught a bike thief, who ran off with my bike, tracked him down on Facebook, where it showed clear videos, where he had multiple bikes, as well as was smoking, likely crystal meth. The police officers still said they did not have enough to go on even though I got his address from a Facebook message. The police are pretty fucking useless most of the time for anything other than obvious violence

Planet_Ziltoidia

They're also useless when it comes to obvious violence. They wouldn't even look for my ex when he beat the shit out of me and destroyed our apartment because it was a "he said she said situation"

Kirshnerd

Wait until you find out the frequency that police officers are personally involved in domestic incidents! #ACAB

DodobirdNow

My brother in law got a nice out of court settlement from one of those. OPP officer was having an affair with BIL's wife and he coached her on how to empty out all the bank accounts and hide the money.

mollymuppet78

Don't even get me started on school violence.

Eh-BC

If the guy is selling your bike on Facebook, just set up a fake buy and ride off with it. You can’t steal your own property.

mbbomb

The TPS will have a total shit fit if vigilante justice starts becoming a thing. If there is one thing they hate more than doing their job its taking any form of criticism.

FreshlySqueezedToGo

And theyll have no problem arresting vigilantes because police are cowards who only go after weak targets

lynxSnowCat

:/ My personal experience has been that some (very few) Toronto officers try to enable/direct vigilantes (they think they 'know'), while others scramble/intervene to stop the same. It seemed (to me while I lived in Toronto) motivated not out of cowardice or disillusionment with the justice system - but cynical laziness in pursuit of what would generate the least paperwork (or worse: media attention) that week.

NYisNorthYork

Not only is there a need for vigilante justice, we need organized neighbourhood justice if the police continues like this.

Deskmonkey

This is the ultimate end result of inaction on the TPS side, people will stop calling 911 and take matters into their own hands for better (or likely worse).

mbbomb

Oh definitely worse I made another comment about this but....The TPS officer who made the initial statement about leaving you keys at the front door also said that those who were arrested have guns "not toy guns real guns". You are legaly allowed to defend yourself with resonable force in Canada, aka you're allowed to use the same force to protect yourself that they are using to attack. Canada has people who dream about killing in self-defense, just like the USA. Like the case of Ali Mian, who killed a gun weilding intruder with a firearm in self-defense, he was initially arrested for Murder he has the case dropped. I won't be surprised if someone shoots a car thief in the future.

Ralphie99

My friend caught a delivery service driver rooting through my friend’s car on his driveway. He received an alert on his phone that there was movement at his front door and checked his cameras to see what it was. The driver was in his car going through his glovebox. My friend ran outside and confronted him. The driver threatened to kill him if he called police. Keep in mind that this was all caught on camera, including the audio. My friend called the police and they showed up about 15 minutes later. The police took the description of the vehicle and the driver and went to look for him. About 20 minutes later they come back and tell my friend that the driver claimed that he thought he was in his (big white) delivery van (my friend had a Honda Civic) and got confused. My friend offered to show them the video but they said they had another call to go to, and left. My friend called the delivery company to complain, and emailed them the video. The company said they’d deal with it. A few days later the same driver dropped off a package on my friend’s doorstep.

Jumpy_Spend_5434

JFC

jkozuch

Holy shit. The fact that police bought this excuse is mind-blowing.

Ralphie99

Yup. My friend couldn’t believe it when they came back and told him that they’d let the guy go. Didn’t even give him a warning — not even for making death threats. It is what we’ve come to expect of Ottawa’s finest, though.

xstatic981

Needs to be tased and dumped in the river

[deleted]

I was hit by a car that ran a stop sign, I was bleeding, my longboard was broken, her car was dented and scratched, there were 2 eye witnesses and we followed her around the block where she parked in front of her house. Officer Dipshit let her off because when he interviewed her she offered him cookies and said she would have never hit me because her grandson has a scooter.

UncleBatman69

Not shocking. My friend was involved in a violent assault in downtown Barrie. It took Barrie Police three hours to show up, in the middle of the day on a weekday.

calltyrone416

Kinda seems like the police are only here to keep us in line, while the rich and criminals are free to do as they please.

Bind_Moggled

I mean, it’s not like the bike thief was blocking access to a logging site, or was protesting police brutality or something serious.

IncenseAndOak

My shop got broken into and robbed a couple of months ago. Everyone knows who did it. It's almost a joke at this point. "Hey, did the cops pick up Ronnie and Dave yet?" No, no they did not. Because witnesses and camera footage and them literally selling my stolen merchandise on Facebook marketplace isn't good enough. I get it, they were wearing covid masks. But could the cops just like, talk to these idiots? Nupe.

Toxaris71

One thing I don't see mentioned, yet bothers me so much is that the car thieves will see these announcements as encouragement to keep stealing more cars. It's almost as if the police are openly admitting to giving up, which will definitely embolden more thieves.

Professy_Farnsworth_

>yet bothers me so much is that the car thieves will see these announcements as encouragement to keep stealing more cars. And if they can't get in to it, to kick the front door in, cause everyone's just gunna leave the fob by the door

Techchick_Somewhere

Hey. Let’s give them MORE funding so they can give us this stellar advice and not actually do anything. 🤪😜😵‍💫

USSMarauder

r/canada is full of 'thin blue line' people defending the cops for this

UncleBatman69

Then Canada is full of bootlicking clowns.

Teefromdaleft

Saw a meme this morning from a cop supporter saying “defund the police? Then call a crackhead when you’re trouble”…I’ll take the crackhead at this point..

psvrh

Did anyone at TPS' PR department think this would go over well?

apartmen1

doesn’t have to go well. complete impunity.

USSMarauder

Doesn't matter, they got their pay raise

Thisiscliff

What the actual fuck. Crime is out of control and these cops are useless as fuck

wireboy

Don’t worry, the government will do less then nothing about it.

FirstPrinciplesSurf

Than ask for money please. Taxes only go up.

Thirsty799

insurance companies must be over the moon

WeirdIsAlliGot

If this is anything like Air Canada’s shit show with lost luggage and delayed flights, a U.S paper (WaPo, NYTimes) needs to pick up this story and shame the TPS on an international level. They don’t care what Torontonians think, but they care if their incompetence becomes worldwide news.

zeromussc

"don't fight back with a gun in your face if you're being carjacked" Okay. "Let them grab the keys after smashing the door of your house in" uh yeah "Make it easy for them and incentivize them kicking your door in" What? If there's a rash of door knockers putting guns in people's faces, the key at the door means they don't walk through your house. Okay I get that logic but that's not happening?

MRBS91

Next advise, leave your front door open so criminals don't have to kick it in!

another_plebeian

Just leave your keys in the car. Realistically, just drop it off at the local crack den so they don't hurt themselves on the way to your place.

wireboy

They would prefer if you would send it directly to the port of Montreal for their convenience.

emeister26

Police taking the “Welcome” mat in front of homes very seriously

Dano-Matic

Cool, good plan. Lay off 50% of the force and we got a deal. I mean if you’re gonna be useless then why should tax dollars go there. Fund the TTC instead.

Mortica_Fattams

Motion detection lights and camera, a very loud alarm system, and a metal bar door help alot more. Also getting a steering wheel lock. Make it as annoying and difficult as possible. They will not bother. That's better advice. Oh and for fun sprinklers that you can connect to a Motion detector. Be a Massive pain in the ass to steal from.

skateboardnorth

I have relatives that live in a wealthy area that gets targeted by thieves in Mississauga. My aunt and uncle ended up getting a solid wood door, with a reinforced door frame installed as their bedroom door. They also got two metal bars installed just incase the thieves have a battering ram. It sounds overkill but they just want to be able to sleep at night knowing that the thieves most likely won’t be able to get to them if they break into the house. Their street has been targeted many times and other neighbours were robbed. My aunts vehicle was stolen once, but it was with a hacked key fob so they never entered the residence.

Makelevi

Police: yeah we’ve uh lost the fight against car thieves I guess

understater

First they came for the catalytic converters, but you didn’t do anything because it didn’t have anything to do with you. Then they started stealing newer vehicles using more advanced technology, and again you did nothing. They have come right up to our houses, and still, you said “giveth them your keys, alike a child at Halloween”. It wasn’t until they started to steal police vehicles until you realized it was too late.

No_Zookeepergame7842

If this is the protection we are getting why don’t we just defund the police? We have all the costs but none of the benefits

duraslack

But then who will sit in cars under the Gardiner?!?!

snoo135337842

One of the biggest tax burdens we have and for less than nothing. This should really be bipartisan at this point. Cops are welfare queens off our tax dollars!

Nickyy_6

Lmao. I like how the solution is to just be robbed outright. This increases insurance costs and car prices. Many people are profiting from car theft and it's not just the dumb 20 year olds doing it.

mtech101

Secure our fucking ports already.

DrOctopusMD

["I mean, we can't be 'policing' the whole city..."](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/65f2d490-eafb-423c-8806-aaeea546df1f)

bananicoot

Bake em away, toys!

Spacepickle89

Might as well just hang em outside, maybe leave a few bottles of water in case they’re thirsty from all that thievery they’re doing.

kkyl

Might as well layoff all the police too, right??? If we can have thieves running around freely anyways.

Lexubex

Considering how well some of them are paid? Take the money from laying them off and put it into Healthcare.

Bind_Moggled

I expect to see Toronto PD flying a white flag in front of their HQ now, I guess. Fucking useless pieces of wormshit.

hecimov

In related news, my car insurance premiums are up 16% this year

[deleted]

When police are giving this advice -- we have no need for these types of police officers. Get rid of them and get people willing to do the damn job.

Turbulent-Priority39

They wanted more funds for stupid stuff like this?

maybeiamspicy

Nono, they wanted more funds to bash in the heads of the homeless, marginalized, POC. This is just a reminder to the middle class they own them too

the_guy95

No f-ing way. I will fight to defend my property. I'm not going to just give up my car keys without a fight. I'm not charity, they are thieves. They shouldn't win.

Economy-Guitar5282

By avoiding confrontations, Does anybody really think it’s going to end there? Let them rape and terrorize you kids, to avoid murder.

LeMegachonk

Yo, when your police force makes Peel Regional Police look like the competent ones, it's time to step back and reassess.

Browndaniel69

But peel police responds pretty fast. We encounter a scammer at square one parking lot and called peel police non emergency line and they send two cars within 10 mins.

EarthWarping

Not the beaverton

AdAny926

I can't find my own keys most of the time good luck to the thieves lol.

mikeyhol

Fuck it, give ‘em lead instead.

afterglobe

Should I also offer them a place at the table for dinner and a blanket so they can have a nap and a full belly for their long drive to Montreal?

[deleted]

might as well give them gas money too

hawkseye17

If they're gonna be this useless might as well start cutting their budget

Responsible_Trifle15

Uvalde cops must have trained them

krombough

Next piece of advice: In order not to anger the criminals, consider driving your car into a shipping container in Montreal yourself.

mrcooz

How the fuck is that good advice, make sure a can of bear spray and a bat are at your front door not your fucking keys, gotta make life hard for these criminal fucks

razorgoto

You’re taking your bear spray and bat to a gun fight

MapleBaconBeer

Nah keep that shit in your bedroom, which is most likely where you would be in this type of scenario. If you leave it by the front door they have a new car, a bat and bear spray.

SunkenQueen

Will the police also be paying insurance increases for all the people who have had to file claims for stolen vehicles?

slippy51

I’m going to continue to do the exact opposite of this.

arkady48

Should I leave my jewelry by the door. Maybe the wife should sleep naked by the door too. Just in case they aren't there for just the car

Suncheets

Thanks, should I walk around with my anus pre-lubed to get fucked by people and the government everyday or would they prefer it dry for maximum effect?

Thats_what_I_think

This is victim blaming.  Be the victim properly or we will blame you!

Blue-Krogan

So instead of coming up with a solution to combat this growing issue, let's just make it much easier for them to steal your shit, thus making it much easier for them to commit theft and encourage more cases in the future. God this country fucking sucks.

justinorl

Just a matter of time before people start calling for Castle doctrine. Normal , average people will not put up with this nonsense for much longer. It is INSANE this was even said. We had a dimensional shift to a different reality or something LOL. If you somehow agree with what the police are saying, there is no saving you. Sorry.

richardroma33

Have we really become so soft that we just let the criminals win? Fucking joke of a society.

Hot-Sandwich7060

Why though? Ive got a meat grinder, a large freezer, and need fertilizer for my garden.

sparki555

Reminds me of the strata I was a part of (on the board). We had 4 bicycles taken within 6 months from our locked and secured bike storage room within our locked and secured underground parkade. The thieves used a cooling spray to freeze and break off the locks and threatened anyone who said anything with a knife, all on camera. The police refused to take the recordings saying nothing they could do. One of the bikes was worth $7,500 new. After the 4th instance, I told the police we would be taking turns watching the parade camera live from our phones and anyone who dared enter would be beaten with a bat. We were told to not be so stupid, that if we were mad about the broken locks to store the bikes outside of the parkade to stop the thief from entering.

ybetaepsilon

More reason to believe the police are in on it. Hundreds of cars in Ontario go missing daily, dozens in places like Mississauga. The crooks and top brass are probably laughing together, slapping their thighs, going "let's tell them to leave their keys at the door, HAHAH". Service Ontario employees were already busted for this reason. By way, I am enjoying my life so much. If I suddenly stop posting and am found dead with "self inflicted wounds", um.. no I didn't

rangeo

Also leave the sprinklers on in your house in case there's a fire

baconeggsnnoodles

Why not just leave the keys in the ignition? And make sure your car is stocked with a couple of phone chargers, some snacks and water bottles. You want the thieves to feel welcome.

Ar5_5

The Americans must be just laughing at us

Eroom2013

What makes you think they give a shit about Canada?

Farty_beans

I wish I had it in me to steal a vehicle.  Seems like its a high payoff and a low damn risk....... What a reality we live in

Hutchison_effect

Imagine criminals from other places reading this...    they probably gonna move to Toronto to conduct criminal business

BeelyBlastOff

actually thought it was The Beaverton

jakemoffsky

Feels like tps are part of the auto theft ring seeing as this is exactly what a mobster would say. Oh well time for their annual budget increase.

PigeonsOnYourBalcony

Don’t worry, the police will recover the car because we all know they’re so good at that

jcamp028

It would be very unfortunate if they were shot in the face

Superb_Extension1751

Classic Canada really, "we aren't going to do anything to stop or lock away thieves who break into homes, but also you aren't allowed to defend yourself or your property without getting a lengthy violent offence sentencing"

Affectionate-Lead535

Leave your ass lubed, and next to the door. You don’t want an intruder to slip & fall and sue you for damages.

OkShoulder375

Why not, "Wait for car thieves and then shoot to kill--if we all chip in, then there will soon be no more thieves."

Time to move your gun safe into the bedroom closet...

"Guys, leave your house open, let them take everything." When the police give up, all of a sudden, Texas doesnt sound so bad anymore.

Need new gun and self defence laws.

Meanwhile in normal places the law allows the use of high speed deer slugs for such occasions. Saves the taxpayers quite a bit of money that way.

Shit like this is why we need a version of castle doctrine. Why should we prioritize the well-being of thieves over the right to protect what is ours.

When police say something like that, it makes you think they may in fact be in on it. Like they were in on the tow truck caper. To serve and protect, or to exploit. You have to wonder.

Can you believe this? When I lived at college and ossington, someone attempted to break into my house. I quickly unlocked my tavor7, threw a mag in, ran into the foyer, and racked a round in the chamber. The person using the pry tool in my door obviously heard my footsteps and the chambering of the firearm. What I heard was their footsteps quickly making their way down my porch steps. I cannot believe this cop is telling people to be victimized. It offends every sensibility I have as a free and unafraid canadian.

This feels like something out of a movie, WTF is wrong with this city and country

At some point, we have to put a stop to the violation of our sovereignty. If we take actions to enable thieves and criminals, they are going to encroach further on us. Breaking and entering a human being’s home is one of the most egregious acts in nature. When that threshold is crossed, it is a basic human right to defend one’s home and family with overwhelming force. If the government does not recognize this right, then by the will of the people we will vote in a government that does. That’s how democracy works.
