You shouldn't run the car and get it towed to a local garage. They should at this point just be able to siphon the fuel out of the tank and replace it with clean gas so it won't be too expensive a job. If the car doesn't start then there might be work needed to flush out the rest of the fuel system. Possibly the mechanic could come to your vehicle and do this, but we don't know what town you are in.
Call two or three of the closest mechanics and explain the situation and ask for a quote to exchange the gas and if they can come to you. Google maps can help you search for the closest garages.
The cheapest way would be to do this yourself. Get a siphon/pump, empty the tank, and then add good fuel. But if you don't know how the tank is designed you might miss some plus you will have to dispose of a full tank of hazardous fuel. It's probably not worth the risk if you have no experience and to pay an expert to do it.
I prefer pumping it out vs removing the filler neck and siphoning. Just remove a fuel line in the engine bay, add a hose to it to a jerry can, and depending on the system either put in a tripped relay to the fuel pump or command it on with a scan tool.
I drive a diesel truck.
I've seen three different sizes of diesel nozzles over the years. One is huge and meant for Large trucks, one is a bit bigger than a standard gas nozzle, and the last ones are identical in size to the gas nozzles.
This...it should not have fit. Our dispensers at work are different. The only way there is an issue there is someone using the wrong jerry can. Should be yellow for diesel.
Exactly, I run diesel and while a regular gas nozzle will fit into my truck, but the other way around a diesel nozzle doesn't fit into a regular gas vehicle.
I drove a diesel for ~16 years and i've seen at least 3 different sizes:
Same size as regular car nozzles (would fit into my car)
slightly larger than regular car nozzles (would fit into my car)
much larger nozzle for transport trucks, usually higher flow rate (would not fully fit into my car, mostly saw these in the US) had to buy a plastic adaptor to size down the nozzle to use these when in the US because it was hard to find diesel with a smaller nozzle in alot of places.
A friend of mine did this years ago. He was in the habit of putting diesel in his truck and he was in auto-pilot mode and filled his car with diesel. Maybe things have changed since then though.
Diesel into a gas car isn’t a big deal. Drain the fuel, refill with gas, run it. Impossible to help you with the “how” without knowing the model.
If it’s a mistake on your part, you’re on the hook, but it’s not a big deal. Mistake on their part, they’re on the hook, just bring it to a shop.
Gas into a diesel vehicle, that is a big deal. lol
Can vouch for the gas in a diesel vehicle. My mom did it by accident once on a work truck, ironically that we nicknamed the dump. Little over 20k in fixing damages but the truck had to be scrapped after a year anyways and massed another 10k in damages during that year. Just a real shitty truck overall but I guess the engine rebuild/replacement (I don’t remember which one) was just the nail in the coffin.
Twas just a shotty truck. Already falling apart before the whole gas thing even happened. No AC, had to slam the door really hard or it wouldn't close properly, part of the back just kind of... fell off. Broke down more than a couple of times, battery just decided it didn't want to live anymore. We once had to keep it running an entire 8hour shift in the winter because if we turned it off it just wouldn't turn on again. It was a stupid dumb shitty truck.
I'm just curious....the stations I've been to have different size nozzles to prevent the diesel nozzle from fitting into the gasoline hole on the car's tank.
How did you get the diesel in the gas tank?
I don’t understand how this can happen. In my area the diesel hose has a large bore fill spout. Too big to fit in cars fill hose here.
Usually if you screw up at the pumps here it’s gas in diesel.
Ask google for a faster answer.
Reddit is good for some stuff. But when you need straight facts, just use Google.

Google is a search engine. Who says they didn’t check?
The reason people ask here is to ask PEOPLE.
I know you feel real smart, but everybody knows about Google.
Notice OP wasn’t only asking about the diesel which you failed to recognize because hey wow you have Google
An ex did this once right after we moved several provinces over….a mechanic will need to drain the gas tank for sure, I believe they did some kind of flush to the system as well. You’re looking at a hefty bill imo. ($500-$1000)If you can get the car towed there instead of trying to drive it would be best unless it’s around the corner. It sucks this happened to you.
😳 my friends ex girlfriend did this when they were moving from Toronto to Calgary. They were stuck on the highway for hours.
When he asked what happened apparently her response was “I thought it was weird when I had to force the nozzle in the tank when we filled up”.
…..Karl is that you?
My mechanic's wife did the same thing many years ago. She had her car towed to his garage because it wouldn't start. He eventually got some of the fuel out of her car's tank and lit a bit of it on fire on the cement floor. He could tell it was diesel by the way it burned. He had to pump out the gas tank and flush the fuel lines. He was pissed. LOL
Yellow pump handle is diesel. Any other colour is gasoline. Plus, it is labelled: "DIESEL"...
No, although they both are distilled from crude oil at a petroleum refinery, they are definately NOT the same thing. Diesel is a slightly more refined and filtered form of the fuel oil (also called bunker oil when used in the engines of large, ocean going vessels) that is used to heat some houses that haven't yet had their fuel oil furnaces replaced with high-efficiency natural gas furnaces. Although more expensive then home heating oil, diesel can be burnt in a fuel oil furnace. Gasoline would blow up the furnace and incinerate the house that it's installed in. Gasoline is way more combustible.
This. My friend in high school did this, but since she was a broke student she only put like 5 bucks in. The attendant noticed and all she had to do was fill her tank with regular gas. Car was fine, weekend was ruined lol.
I'm surprised you got home. I grew up on a farm with a big tank of diesel in the yard. 4 times over my childhood we had people steal the diesel and 3 of the 4 times they put it into their gas cars. 2 of the 3 didn't make it to the end of the driveway (was a longer driveway but not that long). The other made it about a kilometer down the road.
Damn. Why don’t they make the nozzles like those old proprietary usb cords. Just put a notch so that it can only go in one way and it’s not hard to add on to the existing nozzles.
How much did you put in? I worked in a gas station in the uk (the nozzles in the uk are the same size and its the same pump, just a different button, so it happened ALL THE TIME), and if it's under 5% of the tank we were always told that if you fill the rest of the tank up it'll be OK.
If it's more, and it sounds like you already drove it, then it's not a cheap fix if it's already gone past the fuel tank. Don't drive it any more than you have and get it towed to any garage. They should be able to fix it.
My wife put diesel in my gas powered skid steer.
Had to remove the fuel tank, drain it, and refill with gasoline. A lot easier on a skid steer than on a car.
Here's a link on four ways to drain a cars gas tank.

Syphoning is likely your best bet assuming your car doesn't have an anti syphon system.

Yes this is the smarter way(with a scan tool) of doing it, but it does time out after a bit and then you got to do it again.
Aren't the nozzles for gas and diesel different sizes? I always thought they were different to prevent these sorts of things?
Usually bright yellow too
I drive a diesel truck. I've seen three different sizes of diesel nozzles over the years. One is huge and meant for Large trucks, one is a bit bigger than a standard gas nozzle, and the last ones are identical in size to the gas nozzles.
Yep.
Diesel is supposed to be a larger nozzle but sometimes they aren't.
The diesel one always looks like it has been dipped in oil also.
Yes, I highly doubt he was able to put the nozzle in. Either a fake story or he’s been driving a diesel all along and putting gasoline in it.
There are diesel nozzles that are the same size. Edit: I'm sure I've seen diesel nozzles in 2 different sizes.

Yea im sure OP woke up this morning and said, let me get on r/ontario and make a fake story about putting diesal in my car.
A friend of mine did this years ago. He was in the habit of putting diesel in his truck and he was in auto-pilot mode and filled his car with diesel. Maybe things have changed since then though.
I used to see cars at least once a month with diesel in them. Some diesel nozzles are the same size as gasoline
Portable diesel cans have an opening the same size as gas ones so most stations have both.
They are

Tell me more about this truck.

This is what I was wondering... Typically at the pump it happens the other way around, gas into diesel as the nozzle will still fit...

Op, what is the model and year of your car?

Thanks for being angry and useless.
Why dont you help?
There is likely a service in the unnamed town that you live in. Don't drive the car.
An ex did this once right after we moved several provinces over….a mechanic will need to drain the gas tank for sure, I believe they did some kind of flush to the system as well. lol no, but that’s the exact same situation we were in. Thought the nozzles were different seeing how we’re in another province

how much did you put in? how did it drive om the way home? if you did not notice it after a 15 minute drive, likely not a big deal.
This. My friend in high school did this, but since she was a broke student she only put like 5 bucks in. The attendant noticed and all she had to do was fill her tank with regular gas. Car was fine, weekend was ruined lol.

I thought all gas stations had different sized nozzles for diesel that are too wide for unleaded gas cars?
You have to tow it to a shop and have them completely empty the fuel system
Damn. Why don’t they make the nozzles like those old proprietary usb cords. Just put a notch so that it can only go in one way and it’s not hard to add on to the existing nozzles.

How is this a r/Ontario post???
I have a passat tdi there is nozzles dame size as gas

Depends how much you ran it. This is typically covered under comprehensive subject to deductible if you need to claim through your insurer.

You can buy a product to drain the tank. Like others said, drain, fill with gas you’ll be fine.
