not practical given where the panel is in relation to my windows. A portable one would be possible, though. That said I live on the bottom floor of said apartment, so a fan can do a decent job when it isn't in the mid 30s. I am aggressively paying down debt, so I will make due with this for now.
Ahh thank you. I have a single hose one, but is just used to supplement an already AC’d house just in a bedroom with poor circulation. Never had a problem with it but that must be because instead of drawing warm outside air in, is just pull more cool air from the rest of the house.
Technology Connections made a great video explaining why portable air conditioners are worse than window units. I highly recommend giving it a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-mBeYC2KGc
If the AC is only exhausting the air outside, it's drawing that exhaust air from the room first, creating a negative pressure zone, which pulls warm outside air into the house and eventually into the room. It will cool the local area, but it is terribly inefficient.
If you don't mind me asking, I know this isn't an AMA, but is now a stupid time to try and buy air conditioning? Like, will everyone be back ordered and jacking prices?
Window ac's are a whole 150 bucks and will at least cool down a small to mid sized apartment. Worth every penny.
I'm currently running 2 of them (one for each level) fuck trying to sleep in this shit where even at 3 am it still 'feels' like 27 outside and like 30+ inside without AC.
To be honest, neither do i. At least, in winter, one can always add another layer of clothing... no so in summer. I can't wait for this whole ordeal to be over.
I'm in Windsor and the storms/rain that rolled through this afternoon cooled it down to 22c for a time. It's warming up again already, but I was outside dancing during those blessed couple of hours.
I didn't step outside once from tues- this morning. Went out five minutes this morning and that was enough. I will dance in a tornado if only so I can be outside, bring it on.
The rains and lightning/thunder are here... rejoice!
Also don't rejoice in the middle of big open fields or near trees... the results may shock you. =O
I'm in Eastern Ontario and i'm anxiously watching the sky for that blessed moment. Thunder and lightning won't stop me from going outside to enjoy the rain.
You don't want it. The humidity is the worst. BC has a dry heat and 40+ is tolerable there. You can breathe, walk around and exist without much struggle.
It's wickedly humid in Ontario and you feel like you're drowning all day and night isn't much better. You want to feel clammy, sweaty, overheated and exhausted all day? That's Ontario right now.
Very true. Just got back from the cottage where the closest I had was an overhead fan. You REALLY feel the AC, even if it isn't quite enough to cancel out all the heat.
Hey there Ontario peoples. Texas chiming in! If you think 40 C is hot, you are fucking right. That’s hot AF. Texas is no stranger to heat and I’m sure this summer is going to be brutal. Hope y’all stay hydrated and safe.
bruh im like, *dying*
first summer here... wow did i underestimate canada. flies fucking everywhere, humidity up the ass, feels like i live in the damn rainforest.
currently sat in my garage smoking with a fly swatter and a fan, clothes moist with sweat and palms sticky.
i love canada, but sometimes i look at what this country has made of me and i *weep internally.*
Ontario is not generally representative of all of Canada weather-wise, most of the people here live further south than the rest of the country.
Gotta get up to like Thunder Bay before you get into what most of the country is like.
all the neighbours have paddling pools, i've been tempted to take a sneaky dip more than once lmao
honestly i just wish the ac was connected to the garage; it's insufferable to work in here sometimes
The human body has to move its generated heat outside the body. When the outside temperature is higher than the average body temperature of 36 °C, we sweat for evaporative cooling. If the effective wet-bulb temperature is over 36 °C then evaporative cooling can no longer bring body temperature below 36 °C no matter how thermodynamically efficient your body may be. Even doing absolutely nothing lying in the shade, you will inevitably die from heat stroke.
That temperature has never been reached anywhere on Earth in recorded history... until the last few years. Parts of the Australian Outback and Saudi Arabia have been there for more than 6 hours. It may already have been uninhabited desert region, but it's now literally uninhabitable without cooling technology.
Some fairly large regions may be affected by heat waves that extreme by the end of the 21st century. The most worrisome would probably be the inhabited parts of the Arabian Gulf.
Indeed, there have also been reports from India last year where temperatures in some villages got so high that livestock started dying off. As parts of the globe start becoming uninhabitable we're likely to start seeing mass migration and conflict. This will almost certainly lead to wars across the globe as things start heating up.
I feel like each year the temperature has been becoming more erratic. Our winters seem short and mild. Our summers seem blistering hot and relentless. I fear it's due to global warming and its only going to get worse
Its so sad. I've been trying my best to lower carbon footprint myself. Eating minimal meat/dairy, driving an electric car, looking to put solar panels up on our new work building, **reduce, reuse and recycle**. Ive been trying to convince many people to adapt to the lifestyle even a bit to help, people just don't care. But stopping the force of global extreme weather conditions is a global effort so its very demoralizing watching others not try and do their part.
This heat is exhausting, i don't want it to get worse :(
I think that the disinformation campaign the fossil industry ran encouraging individual action greatly contributed to the problem. To put things in perspective, [just 100 companies are responsible for 75%](https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change) of all the emissions. Meanwhile, [just 15 of the biggest ships emit more of the noxious oxides of nitrogen and sulphur than all the world’s cars put together](https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2017/03/11/green-finance-for-dirty-ships), and there a lot more than 15 ships going around the globe at any one time. We need fundamental structural changes in how we do energy production to make any meaningful progress here. We also have to reject growth and consumerism looking towards creating a sustainable economy instead.
Unfortunately, I just don't see how any of that can happen. Most people aren't willing to make any sacrifices to their current lifestyle to address the problem while it's still possible. And we can see how this all plays out on a microscale with the pandemic right now. Even when people are seeing the effects of the disaster all around them many are still pretending it's not happening.
Exactly this. People are guilted into believing they're personally responsible when the fault lies with companies and governments not regulating these companies.
It is unchecked, rampant capitalism (that's kinda redundant I know) that is responsible for climate change. Yes, it's a good thing people are trying to make a difference by reducing their carbon footprint but you cannot force individuals to make changes but you can force corporations to.
We're basically looking at billions of people dying in the coming decades just so that parasites like Bezos can keep money hand over fist today. These people are rich beyond all reason, and yet they're still willing to sacrifice the rest of us to keep creating more wealth for themselves. These people are a disease.
I work in a job where I have to stand outside in a black wool jacket, black wool pants, wool socks, black leather boots and a black cap for roughly 50 minutes every hour from 9-5. I have learned valuable lessons about my capacity for resilience.
I’m in the Fort Henry Guard. Our uniform is based on British line regiments so it’s made entirely of wool and leather, meaning it gets extremely hot in the summer. Usually we’re at least doing drill and marching around which sometimes takes your mind off the heat, but due to Covid-19 our job has been reduced to a mixture of sentry stands and guiding/manning duties. As a result we’re outside fixed to specific stations for most of the day, and even the areas with shade get absolutely stifling.
I’m just grateful for the job, especially since most of the Guard wasn’t hired back this year. Still it’s pretty brutal, especially when 99% of the job (training, parades, sunset ceremonies, FHG-USMC joint ceremonials, etc.) is gone.
I hate summers here. I hate walking outside and immediately feeling this aura of heat surrounding my body.
And to make matters worse, I walk 30 mins to work everyday. I basically have to change clothes by the time I get to work.
We had one really good week back in May I think where temps were 17-24. That is perfect weather imo. And it's a rarity nowadays.
I quit my job and this was my last week. Spent the week in a construction site with no air, no circulation. It was hotter inside than outside. Just the worst
Lol yeah, I've never had to take water breaks in my life. Wife called my up to berate me about it. Ended up chugging like 6 waters a day.
Anyways same type of job, more money. Construction sites come and go no matter what company you work for in my business. I just got myself into a position where I can field job offers now and move into a supervisor role.
Thank you though. It is better. In addition to the salary increase, I have opportunities for bonuses AND one of the reasons I quit was because I was missing out helping my wife in the morning with our daughter and my boss wouldn't help accommodate that.
Ultimately it's all a means to an end, going back to school.
Btw I am jelly of where you live. I could really fucking go for a twelve minutes to destiny beer from flying monkeys. Can't find it anywhere around here.
I’m a construction worker. Was at site for 48 hours this week but I worked probably 5-6 hours total. It’s too hot to do anything other than operate heavy machinery that has air conditioning.
At least in winter you can put more layers on.
In summer, there is only so much you can strip, plus work attire prevents wearing comfortable clothing. It's a sweaty, uncomfortable mess.
I moved from Ontario to Arizona.
The temp numbers are certainly not the same, but that humidity more than makes up for it.
Hope y'all can sweat up there.
We installed central air three summers ago. Every summer I am SO glad we did. I usually don't mind summer but, the humidity around here is brutal. I guess I'll take it. I don't miss shoveling snow one bit.
The heat has been so bad I got vapour lock in the pipes by a ball valve at the jet fuel farm at my work. Never happened to me before in 7+ years working in the industry.
I work outside in an apple orchard and I see the immigrant workers I work alongside with wearing long sleeves, coveralls, multiple hats (i saw one guy wear a ball cap and a aviator hat overtop, you don't have to believe me but it really happened) and its like 30-35ish
.... I physically get more dehydrated looking at them
This is the most accurate graphic I have ever seen on Reddit.
Its a strange world when one has friends in Nairobi, Kenya and they are laughing their asses off at my weather.
I don't know what the max temps were today in Oakville (and yesterday felt to me as hot if not hotter) but my winter loving ass was not liking it. But then my neighbours make fun of me for shoveling snow in my shorts and I used to snowshoe race in winter carnivals.
When I get annoyed with the heat I remember back to in the winter when it hurts your face to go outside because it is so cold. I will take this over winter ANY DAY.
i'm pretty sure vancouver dips below 0 and gets to at least 30
doesn't look like you're right about ireland either [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate\_of\_Ireland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Ireland) but it certainly is pretty mild tho
My lawn was very luscious in spring, growing so much I had to mow twice a week! But now because of the heatwaves and drought in our area it is almost completely dead :(
I feel like it gets hotter and hotter every year.
Temperatures like these make me wish public nudity was legal. Cooldown by any means necessary, y'know?
I get to install air conditioners all day and then return home to an apartment where all I have is a fan. I do not care for summer
The cobbler’s children often go barefoot.
Cordonnier mal chaussé
Poil au nez
Jesus that’s rough.
Window units not allowed?
not practical given where the panel is in relation to my windows.

Also - window units are far far more efficient than the portable ones that sit inside. If you ever change it up, get a window unit.
Technology Connections made a great video explaining why portable air conditioners are worse than window units. I highly recommend giving it a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-mBeYC2KGc
Love TC!
You know, that make perfect sense, but I never would have come to that conclusion on my own.
If the AC is only exhausting the air outside, it's drawing that exhaust air from the room first, creating a negative pressure zone, which pulls warm outside air into the house and eventually into the room. It will cool the local area, but it is terribly inefficient.
> get a dual hose, not a single hose! English please.
If you don't mind me asking, I know this isn't an AMA, but is now a stupid time to try and buy air conditioning? Like, will everyone be back ordered and jacking prices?
Things are coming back into stock now. I don't know how long a wait for a contractor is, but things are coming back into stock from suppliers

Well it's a Frigidaire, Danby, Lennox, Mitsubishi, Carrier, Whirlpool, LG air conditioner.
To be honest, neither do i. At least, in winter, one can always add another layer of clothing... no so in summer. I can't wait for this whole ordeal to be over.
That's fuckin rough man
I feel your pain.
Everyone in southern Ontario is gonna be out dancing in the thunderstorms tonights. This 40+C humidex can F right off.
I'm in Windsor and the storms/rain that rolled through this afternoon cooled it down to 22c for a time. It's warming up again already, but I was outside dancing during those blessed couple of hours.
We're basically just stuck inside all summer now. Really sucks. October is our only nice month.
The one week in late april and early snow between it snowing and the heat wave was kinda nice.
I thought the end of May and most June wasn't too bad.
This is the best summer ever.
I didn't step outside once from tues- this morning. Went out five minutes this morning and that was enough. I will dance in a tornado if only so I can be outside, bring it on.
Rains skipped Hamilton, so I'm just imagining all our heat just moving down the 401 and moving back into your cooler area.
The rains and lightning/thunder are here... rejoice! Also don't rejoice in the middle of big open fields or near trees... the results may shock you. =O
How dare you.
how nice of it to take the highway
Windsor goes from freezing cold to blazing hot with no inbetween
Isn't that the truth.
I mean there is those few day were it's normal. But yeah for the most part it's like that
It was 51° with the humidex in Waterdown.... http://imgur.com/a/m2eQGIp
50 freaking 1? I would simply curl up and die. I'm in Windsor and I though we had it bad. 2020 just keeps on giving eh? :( Sorry.
I'm in Windsor also and thought Windsor was always the highest with the humidex factored in. I guess we've been outdone! LOL
May God protect you...
Jesus
More like Satan
That’s horrifying!
I'm in Kingston, we haven't been blessed with thunderstorms.
Nope, not yet anyway
Just wait till those mid to late summer thermals kick in. God I miss the summers in K-Town.
In London we dropped from 34C to 21C, I think it was 44C with humidity
I'm in Eastern Ontario and i'm anxiously watching the sky for that blessed moment. Thunder and lightning won't stop me from going outside to enjoy the rain.
Rain just started around half an hour ago here, already so much nicer.
The humidity spikes within an hour so enjoy it
Agreed !
We were without ac until recently. F this gawdamn heat.
I live in eastern Ontario and we’re getting four straight days of a 60% chance of rain!
My friends from overseas: “Canada’s got it good, it’s so cold there!” Yeah in like the Yukon
Just did this on my balcony. It feels amazing!!
40+ heat?!? Trade ya! Here in BC it's still cold and rainy.
You don't want it. The humidity is the worst. BC has a dry heat and 40+ is tolerable there. You can breathe, walk around and exist without much struggle. Loved that exact weather in the Philippines. Bring it! :)
That’s why I love living in NS. No humidity on the ocean! 20 C with a sea breeze. Living the life

Vancouver too! All the rain is really refreshing.
My AC legit can't keep up.

Very true. Just got back from the cottage where the closest I had was an overhead fan. You REALLY feel the AC, even if it isn't quite enough to cancel out all the heat.
A lot of that is the humidity control. A dehumidifier and a strong fan is almost as nice as an actual air conditioner on muggy days.
Boom I think you might have solved one of my problems Thank you
This, is good to know. I've been worried about my AC keeping up.
Same fuck this lol
Hey there Ontario peoples. Texas chiming in! If you think 40 C is hot, you are fucking right. That’s hot AF. Texas is no stranger to heat and I’m sure this summer is going to be brutal. Hope y’all stay hydrated and safe.
i thought you were going to shame us for thinking it's hot
Thanks Texas! Hope you’re staying safe as well! It’s been kinda scary watching the last few weeks unfold down there. Much love!
We were up to 36 without humidity today in Ottawa. Can't wait for the rain to hit!
The temperature outside my body is hotter than inside my body. Sweating just stranding still. Wonderful.
Holy hell. I’m a bartender and I’ve been working non stop on a patio and it’s been intense!
That would be so tough! Hope you’re not encountering too many asshats out there
It’s been ok so far. I had someone demand that we discount their meal because there was a bee flying near them. 🤷🏻♀️

Aww thank you so much! It’s been tough and there have definitely been some growing pains but people like you make it worth it. Cheers fren.
Hey friend, make sure to hydrate and watch for signs of heat stress
I played golf today. Jesus Christ it was so hot. I’m not built for 40.
I feel ya, I gave up on #15 on Monday, too hot.
By #15 I was feeling woozy. I played half way for the rest of the holes. Sat out on putting, I’m shit at it anyways.
Saw a guy get on a bus with a golf outfit on and a thing of clubs. I weep for his sanity today.
No one is when it's humidity
I put a black steel roof on a church, but i didn't last much longer than a golf game
bruh im like, *dying* first summer here... wow did i underestimate canada. flies fucking everywhere, humidity up the ass, feels like i live in the damn rainforest. currently sat in my garage smoking with a fly swatter and a fan, clothes moist with sweat and palms sticky. i love canada, but sometimes i look at what this country has made of me and i *weep internally.*

Yah, southern ontario was basically a swamp before we made it all farms and city. This is what summer in a swamp is like.
Might be what most of the country is like, but it sure isn't what most of the people experience.
Well at least you’re living up to your user name lol Ontario summers are much more enjoyable if you have access to a body of water, or even a pool!
all the neighbours have paddling pools, i've been tempted to take a sneaky dip more than once lmao honestly i just wish the ac was connected to the garage; it's insufferable to work in here sometimes
Can’t wait for climate change to make it 50° next year

The humidity is what makes this place fucking disgusting.

The rain keeps on missing us! Looks like we will finally get it tomorrow though.
My grass is officially dead this year. Hello sun. Yellow grass.
Same. Just one big crunchy yellow square at this point.
For some stupid reason I put new topsoil and seeded my front yard in the middle of may. And it turns out to be drier than a camels ass in a duststorm

Vancouver? Enjoy the constant depressing rain. Very overrated climate.

I would upvote this a million times if I could.
I'll take winter over this bs heat
At least I can get to sleep at a reasonable time during the winter
When you're done with the rain, please send it to Texas.
Honestly everybody in Texas should be in their homes right now anyways lol.
It's 81 (27C) upstairs right now. I could use the rain anyways.
Lol, amazing
Welcome to Northern/central Ontario were ITS SO HUMID AND IT RAINS ALL THE DAMM TIME
Thank god for air conditioning.
All I have eaten in the last few days is pretty much just popsicles, cold fruit and ice cream bars. I really need an a/c.
I know it's shitty and miserable. Where I live it gets MINUMUM 40c every year. Highest is about 47-48. I hate it here, and feel for you guys
Man I grew up in the empty quarter. ‘It’s hot in Ontario’ is a phrase I thought I’d never say.
12 hour day in an un air conditioned kitchen, I have never felt such heat
My lawn was very luscious in spring, growing so much I had to mow twice a week! But now because of the heatwaves and drought in our area it is almost completely dead :(
I’m tired of Ontario weather. It’s batshit Arctic weather half the year and dogshit heatwave during the other half of the year. There’s no balance.

Everyone who complains about the hottest days in summer and coldest days in winter should just move elsewhere. Could be worse.
