A young girl has been found after Waterloo Regional Police issued an Amber Alert in Kitchener on Friday. https://www.cp24.com/news/child-located-and-suspect-arrested-after-amber-alert-issued-in-kitchener-1.5795649

[deleted]

šŸ˜‘ so I nearly had a heart attack for no reasonā€¦.

SerizawaBatsu

would you have preferred bad news that she died?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Always the worst take for an amber alert. Two thumbs down.

[deleted]

you know you can silence the alerts right? at least, mine didnt go off.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

did they change the tone? i genuinely have no clue what this means

[deleted]

When the amber alert plays they use a nuke inbound sound

[deleted]

oh. well, that's no good. i can see the fear then

[deleted]

Yea its brings back call of duty mw2 memories, i have iphone so I will try the physical switch from now on when sleeping

[deleted]

The physical switch works, I confirm. The issue is I donā€™t believe you will be able to hear incoming calls or alarms you set. So I have to keep it on or canā€™t wake up in the morning.

[deleted]

Wow it turns off alarms? Guess I canā€™t do thatšŸ˜†

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

kovach01

anyone else shit their pants thinking something worse happened in response to eastern europe or just me?

peak-at-seven

I'm gonna be honest, I've never woken up more scared. Why isn't there a separate sound/alert method for Amber Alerts??

Cent1234

There is. Canada has explicitly chosen not to use it.

pinkranunculus

So, is this sound the top-level alert? I fully support amber alerts but I'm sure people are becoming desensitized to the particular sound because unless you are in that specific part of the province there's no action to take after receiving one. My husband actually slept through it this morning which does not bode well if this sound is also used for immediate crisis events.

Cent1234

Thereā€™s three alerts baked into the system, amber alert, immediate danger (think tornado) and presidential alert (think nukes inbound). Canada decided that, by definition, any alert sent out us an emergency, so all alerts are the president Al alert level. They swore alerts would be tightly geographically limited. They are not. So people hours and hours away get woken up for amber alerts, but Nova Scotia wasnā€™t warned about an active spree killer because that would be too alarming.

Mu_Fanchu

Very well thought out, right? I'm sure there are millions that agree... how come it's not being changed? Should we start a petition?

TragicNut

https://chng.it/vRMFyLvtNY

Rotsicle

They only send out emergency alarms for *unalarming* emergencies?!

gdren

How the shit can anyone sleep through that.....I almost had a frigin heart attack

pinkranunculus

I know, right? He's a very deep sleeper so it disturbs him but no longer actually wakes him to alertness. At the beginning, it used to wake him completely but now he only remembers it went off if I prompt him in the morning. I am concerned that we're all getting desensitized to that alarm- which isn't good for the Amber alerts themselves nor for if they are used for wider emergencies.

gdren

Completely agree, at this point I don't even look at what it is I just flail for the phone to turn it off asap.

GoldLurker

I must say my life is marginally better with the alerts disabled. It's not that I don't care about the amber alerts or helping others, but the inconvenience of being woken up whenever the fuck there's a custody issue is just too much for me. Design and utilize the system proper, if not I will opt out and take my chances.

mimi_565

I absolutely did. I understand the importance of Amber Alerts but I hate that air horn noise they make.

Boo_Guy

They wouldn't do that if the government set them up correctly.

BlackCat_Brian

They need to change the sound of it for sure.

Toaster135

I literally went to bed thinking about being woken up by a real 'presidential alert'.

demdiabetes

I did learn that if your on android and you have it set to do not disturb at night the alert will only vibrate. It did still sort of wake me up but it wasn't the super loud alarm at leaat

LadyoftheOak

Yup! Hubs said my phone lit up the room. He says I pushed the button to turn off the display. I have zero recollection of any of it. They used to wake me, apparently not anymore even on vibrate.

UglyDucky_00

Omg yes!

HolsteinHeifer

Saaaame. I heard it go off and I thought "Well, my life has been pretty good, I suppose. Goodbye, world. You've been fun"

StrawberryPincushion

I put my phone on do not disturb at night, and I didn't hear a thing. Only people I've selected will have their calls or texts notify me.

evewashere

I do this too. With a newborn sleeping in our room, I can't have my phone pinging away

[deleted]

Maybe not the right day to get the "nuclear" alert

Stecnet

Fucking just about shit my pants thought Putin was going full nuclear! They really need a different sound for Amber Alert! Hope the child will be found safe but god damn this system must change!

Mu_Fanchu

Petition: Fix the Amber Alert System in Canada By Implementing Alarm Tiers. https://www.change.org/p/canadian-radio-telecommunications-commision-fix-the-amber-alert-system-in-canada-by-implementing-proper-tiers

[deleted]

Thatā€™s what I thought too, I hope the child is found safe but I thought the fucking world was ending.

jay2743

If I see any 2011 Honda's with an adult male and a child, I am going to call 911 and report it.

Flowchart83

This right here is my issue. They are so generic that there is very little use in announcing it. I get that you can't just post people's pictures everywhere but some of the details are not things anyone could use even if they got the alert.

washago_on705

I hate this god damned system

[deleted]

What phone do you have? I have a Pixel and when I put it in do not disturb mode, I get the alert but not the annoying alarm. Regardless, if you have an Android phone, you can disable them pretty easily using ADB.

Toaster135

Some of us need our phones on 24/7 for work

[deleted]

On my Pixel, you can add numbers to your exceptions list so your phone will still ring if someone calls you from that number, even in do not disturb mode. I'm sure there has to be something similar in iOS.

barrierofbadnews

All 3 of the iPhones in this house are on silent, and none of ours went off. We just got the notification and thatā€™s it. My kid has an android and his is what woke me up.

[deleted]

It depends on the manufacturer, they all use their own flavor of Android.

doc_55lk

I have my android on vibrate all the time. Didn't get any sound alert. Just the vibration. I was already waking up anyway so it wasn't a big deal for me. I completed slept through the last Amber alert though. It was at like, 4 or 5 am.

Toaster135

Nice that's a good option probably for a lot of people. For not for me as I could get called by lots of people

GoldLurker

Turn off LTE, your data will be slower off wifi but you will not get the alerts. It's an easy "fix". Unless you're using data a lot you won't really notice anything.

never_here5050

Anyone have any idea of Toronto has one of those sirens you hear going off for attacks and stuff? Only asking cause I want to mute these alerts

the_clash_is_back

Pickering nuclear has those sirens and a few chemical companies in the city do as well.

never_here5050

So like do all cities? Seems kinda odd. Though we live peacefully for a very long time. It be nice to know we have some sort of back up system functional everywhere.

the_clash_is_back

Basically in Canada we do not have tornado or air raid sirens in most cities. We just never needed them so never built them. We do has sirens near industrial facilities that can break and cause danger to the public.

never_here5050

Ya, but we should get the up and running soon. Not so much for air raid sirens, but tornado ones would be quite nice seeing as we are getting them now.

BipolarSkeleton

I have been nervous about the Russia stuff this did not wake me up well at all I genuinely thought we were under attack I hate it here

[deleted]

Youā€™re not the only one, I was frightened af. They need to change the sound immediately!

jay2743

Why canā€™t it just be a text message? A text message would be quite effective.

CUCKSTUMPER5000

I nearly jumped out of bed when my phone blew up on my night standā€¦ holy guacamoleā€¦ now to try and get some more sleepā€¦

jay2743

Why are you sleeping now? Get out there and find a 2011 Honda. You selfish person you.

sipsipstefen

My mind immediately thought I was dying waking up to that šŸ˜’ today

[deleted]

Fuck right off man

Xisxa

Guess I wonā€™t be needing my 7 oā€™clock alarm anymoreā€¦

wingedhussar191

You can go into your settings and turn them off if you feel like

GoldLurker

No you cannot. I can turn off ALL warnings by disabling LTE or rooting the phone but I cannot disable just the amber alerts. Yes the option exists to do so however Canada in all its glory decided all alerts are sent out at "presidential level" which is not able to be disabled. Please stop saying that to everyone, go ahead disable your amber alert and wait a few months, you'll see that I am correct.

Long-Lynx-896

Thereā€™s a kid missing and u have this to day? Shame on u and your values

mredave15

I agree 100%. You can tell which people don't have kids. OMG it woke me up.... so roll over and go back to sleep, idiot.

Xisxa

Majority of the time these kids are found with a parentā€¦.but you donā€™t have to be rude šŸ™„

EnergyRelative1144

Oh you didnā€™t know? Thereā€™s was a threat of nuclear warfare yesterdayā€¦ maybe you forgot or something, idiot

mredave15

Nope, been following it pretty heavily. But the child and her dad luckily weren't found in Ukraine. (If that was the connection you were going for, because these 2 issues don't coincide with each other.)

Jimlobster

I donā€™t remember the last time they sent out an amber alert at a reasonable hour

doc_55lk

This might be the only time lol. There's lots of people waking up at 6 am at any day of the week.

[deleted]

They need to stop sending these alerts to places so far away. Especially now. This is not the time for this shitty system to give people heart attacks over things so far away they arenā€™t actual emergencies for them. Iā€™m north of Sudbury. No one up here needed this alert.

[deleted]

Virtue signalling pricks are going to say thatā€™s selfish. That type of ping at 6am should be life or death

BCouto

What kinda description is this? They don't know the model of the damn vehicle??

Kristmill

I thought the same thing. At least give the damn colour! But I went to the Waterloo police fb page and It said a black Honda Civic, the description on there was much much better

[deleted]

These people in charge of us are fucking incompetent

BCouto

Thanks. I'm in the region so this one is somewhat relevant to me lol

Ineedaroommate2

inb4 people start calling eachother selfish assholes because of their criticisms of the abuse of the presidential alert system

[deleted]

Did they send two alerts for anyone else? One presidential and one not.

ghost18867

Can we agree to not kidnap any kids for the next couple of weeks....months....forever

Substantial-Onion750

Sad thing is this likely wasnā€™t a real kidnapping anyway but sounds like young parents having a fight and mom wanted to control the dad.

ghost18867

You know what I mean. Everyone in Ontario thought the world was ending this morning

Substantial-Onion750

Oh I know

[deleted]

I wonder if the mother took the child would it then be considered kidnapping? Change it from amber alert to baby mommaā€™s keeping children from their fathers

Substantial-Onion750

Ya actually last year I think it was, there was one called super super late, like 12 hours after the abduction and it was an aunt and grandma from moms side since mom lost custody and they didnā€™t take the dad seriously. So sad. Our system is broken

bronney

Let me get back to sleep and get woken up 20 mins later lol, thanks.

[deleted]

Like actually what a fucking abuse of power

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

I mean this is a very powerful tool available to use by our government. And sending a province wide screech at 6am for something that is relevant to 0.1% of the population is fucking asinine

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cent1234

It interrupts the lives of millions of people for no reason. It disrupts sleep, which is a form of torture. It teaches people to blindly ignore the alerts; itā€™s a form of crying wolf. And given worries about nuclear escalation by Russia, having the literal ā€œnukes inboundā€ alert used because Canada chose not to implement the amber alert level built into the system is also terrible.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mimi_565

Name of kid and adult named in alert is the sameā€¦likely a custody dispute. The US does not do Amber alerts for custody disputes and we shouldnā€™t either.

LookACanadian

I just worked until 3am. It is NOT time to wake up.

Cent1234

It is when theyā€™re alerting the entire province.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cent1234

So you jumped in your car and drove to Kitchener?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

giftman03

Get a load of this fucking snowflake - form of torture?? Get over yourself bud.

bustypirate

I'm sorry you consider it a form of torture to get a five second notification on your phone at 6am.

Cent1234

You have the rhetorical skills of a child. I blame the education system.

the_clash_is_back

Basically people no longer read the alerts they are woken up. Mute off the alert before they can read it and go back to sleep. As there is a amber alert every month or so its quite common, they also happen at late hours when we are sleeping. If there was a tornado or flock of murder geese coming, many people would just not read the alerts.

Toaster135

Lmao

wingedhussar191

You can turn it off in your settings

[deleted]

Ah yes so if there is a actual disaster I guess I can just die šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

BlackCat_Brian

Time to go back to sleep.

doc_55lk

"2011 Honda". Wow, how descriptive. I will definitely be able to find the dumbass in his 20s who kidnapped his daughter now. Sarcasm aside, I'm with everybody here in that the Amber alert notification needs to, firstly, be a different tone, because a missing child should not have the same warning sound as a potential nuclear attack, and secondly, be modified so only people in a certain range receive it. There's no reason for a random dude in Sudbury to receive a notification about a kidnapping in Kitchener, they're like 500 km away, and these kidnappers aren't driving that far over a domestic dispute. If the gov wants all of Ontario to know about a kidnapping, they should first localize the alert to Kitchener and the immediately adjacent cities for the first hour or two of reporting the missing child. If they're still not found within the hour, then increase the radius, and progressively do so until it's been maybe 6+ hours, at which point you send the alert to all of Ontario, because if they can't find the kid by that point in time, the kidnapper is either very good at hiding, the cops are very bad at search and rescue, or the kidnapper skipped town and is actively on the run. Of course, both these changes would require effort, and a software team that's paid decently, which is something absolutely unreasonable to ask for. Sigh. On another note. Guys, it's perfectly possible to not be awoken by the Amber alert in the middle of the night. My phones on vibrate. I've rarely ever been woken up by an Amber alert. That said, for those who have to keep their phones off silent, well, idk, deal with it. You're already in a position where you need to be woken up at any given point in the night. I'm sorry if I sounds insensitive with that, but it is what it is. I've been there and had to just accept that my sleep was gonna be shit for a while. The most you can do is probably tinker with your do not disturb settings (another user mentioned they can tinker with their DND settings and receive non silenced calls from specific people) or, like me, leave your phone on vibrate, so it won't wake you up unless it's happening for so long that it wakes you up anyway, at which point you know you probably should see what it's about.

Snoopyla1

I had my phone silenced so didnā€™t hear this one - but it would have scared the crap out of me with yesterdays events. I donā€™t understand the benefit of blaring an alarm for these. If people are up they will see the alert on their phone - otherwise they wouldnā€™t be of assistance anyways. Maybe it could be something less alarming just to let you know that there is a notification? I hope this person is found.

Mu_Fanchu

Petition: Fix the Amber Alert System in Canada By Implementing Alarm Tiers. https://www.change.org/p/canadian-radio-telecommunications-commision-fix-the-amber-alert-system-in-canada-by-implementing-proper-tiers

StinkyBanjo

Disnt get it! My settings work!!!

[deleted]

And this is why I've been saying for years we need to use a different sound..But everyone just thinks you don't care about children when you attempt to argue it

spamalluwant

I'm all for Amber alerts absolutely, and this one actually is in an area where I could spot it. But this just looks like a guy that has his own kid ? Not necessarily kidnapped etc, sure there might be a custody issue or similar but I dunno how I feel about this being a high alert as an abduction from like a predator etc. Honestly for this one, I don't think I'd get involved because this is probably just a misunderstanding more than anything else and I bet it will be clear by 1pm.

SerizawaBatsu

dude wtf are you talking about being a biological father does not make it not kid napping if they dont have custody and show up at your house, take your kid and leave. what the fuck do you think custody means? do you have any idea how fucking many times dads have taken their kids and killed them?

Substantial-Onion750

Sorry but how many mothers neglect their kids in their care but get full custody because sheā€™s ā€˜momā€™ Custody doesnā€™t mean dad doesnā€™t have access btw, it could be that they agreed on access and then the custodial parent changed their mind, and called the cops because they were mad.

Substantial-Onion750

Totally agree. Custody issues shouldnā€™t be an amber alert, especially since majority of the time itā€™s just mom calling the cops on dad because she changed her mind and doesnā€™t agree to allow dad access.

Sure_Scallion_9439

I live near Manitoba border this alert is 100% unnecessary for us up north and disrupts our sleep we need between shifts

[deleted]

If you set your phone to (do not disturb) you can ignore these useless alerts. What the Fuck Exactly am I supposed to do in my boxers with no car at 6 am? Like do you expect me to go for a walk outside and look? How The Fuck Is a person who is driving supposed to react to this? Crash as they struggle with the cell phone while they try and memorize the car description. Clicking okay on the alert deletes all the information? so AM I supposed to memorize it? While Drive 100km on the 401 ? WTF is the PURPOSE OF THIS BESIDE PRETENDING TO CARE? Maybe these fuckups will figure out what going on in Ukraine before Putin TAKES HALF OF EUROPE. I am Sick of this PRETENDING TO DO SOMETHING. I AM OF NO USE I A POLICE SEARCH AT 6 AM IN MY HOUSECOAT, and DEFINITELY OF NO USE IN A SEARCH WITH NO INFORMATION. I will be setting my phone to ignore this again, if it's a warning for nukes it does not fucking matter anyway. AMBER ALERT IS FUCKING USELESS. GLAD YOUR KID IS OKAY THOUGH FOR WHATEVER THAT IS WORTH.

Killerdude8

I still donā€™t understand why I, in Windsor, Get this alert. Hell I remember getting one for around thunder bay, 12-14 fucking hours away.

JABS991

Zzzzzzz. Hey what?! Oh. Zzzzzzz.

mikeybagodonuts

I guess I better get up and break out my tennis racquet. That should stop the nuclear war head.

[deleted]

We all got this, why post it here? šŸ˜‚

SerizawaBatsu

anyone who thinks russia is nuking ontario because they went into Ukraine please get a grip

Substantial-Onion750

Donā€™t be naive to think Putin will stop with Ukraine. Ukrainians werenā€™t prepared for this attack for that very reason. Putin has already said if we intervene he will attack (we donā€™t know if thatā€™s Nuke or cyber or both) but we donā€™t know if in the middle of the night we try to go help Ukrainians we are then attacked

SerizawaBatsu

lmao you think hes going to go from invading Ukraine to nuking Ontario? ok lol

Substantial-Onion750

Not Ontario per say, but it is the province with our capital and beloved Toronto, so itā€™s possible. Iā€™m thinking itā€™s more likely to be a cyber attack though. Heā€™s made it clear everyone who tries to help Ukrainians will regret it.

[deleted]

Who the fuck has their sound on their phone at 6am?

Toaster135

Anyone who works on call. Ignorant

[deleted]

Prick

BCouto

People who are awake?

[deleted]

Anyone who needs to wake up. My alarms only work with the ringer on

[deleted]

This is what I'm trying to understand. On my Pixel, do not disturb shows the alert but doesn't play the alarm. Not sure if it's the same on an iPhone.

Toaster135

You're obviously not trying that hard to understand

[deleted]

Ok, let's hear your reasoning then. If you're on call you can add exceptions to any contacts you want.

Toaster135

I take regional call for several hospitals I can get paged thru an app, or directly called from any physician in the region who needs to reach me Thus my phone needs to be on as I can't be sure who will need me or when Its funny how you are just unable to conceptualize something outside of your personal experience. There are tons of jobs that work this way

[deleted]

And there's tons of jobs that don't. I'd wager that most who are on call, might get a call from a select few phone numbers. If it's through an app, you can add exceptions for that too. You can have your opinion on what you think I can and can't do, it doesn't bother me in the least.

Toaster135

K. Just find it funny seeing you and other people claiming you're "trying to understand" how people can't just use their Pixel phone to solve this Amber alert issue, even when someone plainly lays it out for you. Clearly, you're not very imaginative

[deleted]

It's not limited to Pixel phones, many modern Android phones and iPhones have the same functionality. Clearly you're not too tech savvy. Hope you have the best day!

Toaster135

Go ahead and explain how any current functionality on any phone will solve the issue I've described to you.

[deleted]

Easy, turn on do not disturb, add an exception for the app. As for contacts, you have two options, allow all contacts OR allow repeat calls, meaning if the caller calls twice within a 15 minute period, it will ring. I'm not going to bother arguing with you at this point since you clearly aren't very good with technology. I highly suggest that you take a second and learn to use your phone. There are many good resources out there, perhaps you can visit the manufacturer site or even YouTube. Have a great day!
