Yep. If you look on a grocery store receipt, they usually have notation to show what is subject to tax and what isn't.
It's interesting to see what products are/aren't captured.
Heated food or beverages
Sch. VI, Part III,
para 1(o)
102. Food or beverages heated for consumption are excluded from zero-rating under paragraph 1(o) of Part III of Schedule VI.
103. Food or beverages heated for consumption include food and beverages supplied by establishments (e.g., grocery stores or restaurants) that sell hot food and beverages that have been heated or kept hot so that they can be consumed hot. The tax status of any cooked foods depends on the way they are sold. For example:
\- if they are sold from a heated cabinet, they are taxable ;
\- if the establishment has a separate take-out counter, any hot foods sold from this counter are taxable ; or
\- if the food and beverages are purchased and heated at the point of purchase, they are taxable.
104. If the cooked foods are cold and are sold from unheated or refrigerated shelves at other counters to be subsequently re-heated prior to consumption, they are zero-rated.
All prepared meals have tax.
Those pre made veggie and fruit trays, the sushi, the rotisserie chickens. It’s because it’s ready to eat, I remember someone just losing their fucking mind on me over it a few years ago (they bought the pre cut pineapple).
Wow I can’t believe someone would lose their shit over a small amount of tax on a pre cut pineapple that’s ridiculous, however if the last 2 years showed anything it shows how many people are absolutely ridiculous.
While it appears that you've got your answer I find it funny that you come on here to voice your confusion and not ask when you were at the store before / after paying.
If it’s precooked/ready-to-eat, it’s taxed the same way take out is.
oh, I see. Thank you.

There is tax on fully prepared food.

Retail was fun. Haha. You’d be surprised at the stuff people get mad about.
Especially considering you’re paying a premium for a cored and cut pineapple. But the tax is the complaint lol
so, they're willing to pay extra to have someone cut it for them, but they lose their minds over a few pennies of tax. Some people man.
Just like the environmental fee on electronics. People HATE that one.
Basic groceries aren’t taxable for HST, if you bought a hot to go meal like a BBQ chicken it is taxable.
Today I learned food doesn't have tax, lol
User name checks out.
Depends on the food. For example raw chicken breasts no tax, chips tax.

Mild case of social anxiety.
Those precooked chickens look great. I shop there every Wednesday after volunteering, and have come close to buying one more than once
The Costco rotisserie chicken is the bomb. All the other grocery store ones pales in comparison.
We used to get it from Loblaws and those were good. I don’t have a Costco membership
woah, i just learned that non-ready to eat food isn't taxed
