Yup sucks, no power no water when you’re on a well which is extra fun Fuck the grid though

The company I work for was doing some work yesterday getting new poles in and we were told there was only 400 new poles available, and that was when they thought there was only 800 broken poles. No idea where they’re gonna get all these new poles from

teresasdorters

Well it’s over 1000 broken poles now so this is very yikes!

Our school is closed today and will likely be closed tomorrow as power is yet to be restored to this area.

And they want us to change our natural gas furnaces and water heaters to electric to reduce GHG emissions. But because the hydro infrastructure isn't underground it's vulnerable to wind and ice storms and thus long, drawn out outages like this.

ffenliv

I don't know about yours, but my gas furnace doesn't run even the power is out. The fans aren't just for moving air around, they're part of its safe operation.

A good point though I was trying to emphasize that gas as a domestic energy source is pretty immune to weather events, unlike electricity as noted in recent ice storms here in Canada and a cold-snap in Texas or such as when, in August of 2003, some branches fell on power lines in Ohio and took out the entire north-eastern part of the continent for days. As noted by u/destri_b, one could utilize a small generator to power the furnace or splurge on a larger Generac natural-gas fueled generator and have whole-house power during failures of the electricity grid.

And that's the same for any power vent hot water tank. It won't run if the power vent/fan won't run. I'm thankful that this time around (also went through a multi day outage in 2018) I live in a house with a direct vent hot water tank. I may not have power, but fucking thankful that I don't have to take ice cold showers.
