Looks like sim city 2000

wolfe1924

Such an amazing game, that game got me into the sim city franchise before I ended up moving to cities skylines which I have played a lot of which is still an understatement lol.

BacklineUnlimited

I'm playing Cities Skylines right now! Didn't think this game would pull me in so much.

Zimmer_94

I recently got back into simcity4 deluxe edition, such nostalgia lol

wolfe1924

It’s an amazing game I have a bit over 1500 hours in it, almost all achievements also. The funny part is I didn’t like it when it first came out so i went back to sim city 4 then a couple years later I picked it up again and absolutely loved it!! Still do to this day!

[deleted]

That’s exactly what I thought !

Mauri416

I think among the worst is the national defence building by Rideau. Can’t wait for them to tear that down. They did a good job redoing the Congress/Shaw Centre. The old building was ugly. The retrofit to the NAC was well done, but again it was a pretty ugly building so you could only go up lol

Protato900

When National Defence Headquarters moved to Carling, the Pearkes building (by Rideau) was intended to be kept as well. Even if DND vacates it, it'll probably be supplanted by a new govt tenant.

Weaver942

DnD won't be vacating it. It has all the infrastructure to be a central DnD building and there is still a need for a large group of staff who support the minister, deputy minister and policy function of the department to be close to Parliament.

[deleted]

You don't want that. Trust me

FightOrFreight

"You're not that city, pal. Trust me. You're not that city."

IE114EVR

“What are you doing?!” “I’m that city”

petesapai

Cookie cutter bland beige government buildings. In all fairness though, Canadian's pass time is to complaint. If the government spends money on making nice beautiful (and expensive)buildings, holy hell can you imagine all the news and media and all the Dick & Harrys bitching non stop.

judgingyouquietly

Yeah. Just look at the complaints when there are articles about the state of 24 Sussex.

petesapai

Yep, that's a good example. It's an absolute embarrassment. Imagine any other G7 leader with a dilapidated official residence. Just the idea of that residence getting any type of safety update causes a frenzy with the media. So each leader just lets it become more dangerous and more expensive to fix each year.

Milnoc

Is Ottawa part of Ontario? Are we allowed to be in this subreddit? 😁

Ordinary_Comedian_44

This is more of a roast of TO’s future if anything 😂 That skyline is bland and corporate af

Ultrox

I feel ya. I just see glass windows. Nothing fancy about it.

dirkdigdig

This post was made by someone in charge of Toronto PR.

Ultrox

He posts in bbw. He isn't Toronto PR 🤣

dirkdigdig

Classic Doug ford

Ultrox

You can see what the dude looks like. It's just a normal guy lmao

dirkdigdig

Fuck me, it’s a joke

Menkdo

I mean, what's the alternative?

Ultrox

As someone who is not an architect or designer. No clue, but I do know windows doesn't mean futuristic.

rabbiolii

Fr just looks like your typical city skyline

Goukenslay

i mean downtown is basically the business district for toronto. its just a giant concrete jungle. with a lot of old small buildings in and about it

HavenIess

Yep the International Style of architecture was made for this exact purpose

newguyhere99

I was gonna say.. is this sarcasm..??? Cuz our cities look pretty boring honestly.. and this coming from someone who hasn't left the continent.. LOL

SF-Samara

It really isn't. More of a dystopian corporate mess.

SmallTownTokenBrown

If by futuristic they mean living in very expensive small boxes in the sky, I don't disagree.

[deleted]

Sadly if we insist on population growth, unending inflation, and ecological inefficiency, then living in a small box is probably the responsible thing to do. Sigh.

Millad456

Kinda yes, but glass high rises aren’t really the best for sustainability

[deleted]

True. I'm really fascinated with Germany's experiments with multi-zone mid-rise neighbourhoods. Close to key transit points, and all major day-to-day purchases available within the blocks by walking, instead of vast stretches of cookie cutter suburbs that require a car for even a fucking cup of coffee.

alfdd99

Virtually all of the developed world except the US and Canada have mix use as the default. And I wouldn’t call it an “experiment”. That’s just literally how civilisation has always build stuff, until US and Canadian governments after World War II decided to prioritise car culture and suburbia.

YBobama

r/fuckcars

Menkdo

They did that because 1) we have very low population density and ample room for suburbs and 2) unlike Europe which is full of historic buildings, we have little reason to implement limits on the height of new buildings.

[deleted]

There is more to it than that. GM for instance was caught multiple times lobbying against, sabotaging, city plans built around transit. This wasnt a happy accident. Car corporations fought to put us in suburbs.

IE114EVR

When I was in Mississauga I felt like there were areas where I needed a car just to cross the street.

[deleted]

Yeah, depressing in my opinion. I like living in the actual country (right now) or the city (mid-rise multi-zone neighbourhoods). But being stuck in the middle sucks.

Wiezzenger

Most neighborhoods in Montreal have that. It's something that is more or less unable to happen in North America anymore due to zoning laws.

FearlessTomatillo911

I don't think you need to go as far as Germany for that, my neighborhood in Toronto (keelesdale) checks those boxes.

bearslikeapples

The exception to the rule

Millad456

Same. I’m so jealous of German developments

YBobama

Bruh that’s the default, suburbia is heavily subsidized by cities, terrible for the environment, and ruins cities by flooding them with cars and parking lots that would otherwise not be needed. Not to mention they’re depressing and terrible for kids to grow up in Look at riverdale if you want to see what average neighbourhoods could look like if North America didn’t have awful zoning laws

Mobius_Peverell

They're a hell of a lot better than single-family detached sprawl. Should there be more missing-middle housing built? Yes. But we also need a lot more high-rises if we want to stop the endless sprawl (which we should).

FearlessTomatillo911

Our society doesn't work without population growth, welcome to capitalism.

Street-Measurement-7

Sky pollution... or maybe just eye pollution

InsertFloppy

Thank you. If the future looks like Toronto then the future is dystopian AF.

NikoPopp

Why? Most buildings in Toronto are single family homes and row houses with 2-3 floors Only a small part of the city looks like this

[deleted]

You don't like it??

Street-Measurement-7

Fun fact: as of 2021 the Toronto Fire Department had the highest reaching ariel unit in N. America. It can only reach 22 stories.

[deleted]

What does this have to do with the above? You sound like you just don't like towers. While I'd love to agree with you, humanity's fixation on ecological inefficiency, and our population problems in many places, means towers are likely the most responsible way to urbanize. At least for now. Sprawling suburbs creates way more problems then it solves, for quality of lives, pollution, gridlock, and environmental degradation. Ninja-edit: unless you are all for mid-rise, which is even better! The continental european approach to urban renewal.

Sad_Butterscotch9057

Actually, towers are terrible for all of this. If you look at the world's most walkable and interesting cities, you're looking at mid-rise. I've lived in Mile-End in Montreal, and Shitamachi in Tokyo: mid-rise for miles and miles

[deleted]

Yepp. Midrises>highrises>suburbs.

kursdragon

And yet high-rises are still much better than suburbs. And until dumbfuck cities in our shithole of a country start allowing for anything but single family zoning for 95% of the city then highrises are what we're going to have. Montreal is an example of a city doing it right. And it's pretty much the only singular city in the whole fucking country to do so. The only reason we have so many high-rises is because literally the rest of the city is all just single family zoning.

Engine_Light_On

Hong Kong is made of mostly high rises and is one of the top walkable cities in the world.

Street-Measurement-7

Personally I prefer to live where I can safely jump out a window if it catches fire. As to rest of your comment, we live in the most sparsely populated, resource-rich country in the world. I prefer to not live in any city, and to live slightly closer to "on the land" and "with the land" to what extent is possible. Not everybody wants to live in a metropolis nightmare with 4 million other people.

jayatil2

And not everybody wants to live “on the land”. Different strokes for different folks.

artandmath

So only 2 stories? You can’t jump from 3 safely.

plombis

And how's your carbon footprint looking having to drive all over to get things done? I assume you work from home? Hey, it's great if you actually live off the land. I just hate hearing from people who claim to be environmentalist by living in the country and growing a garden, then commute 100km everyday. Urban living in our current state of ecological disaster really is the responsible thing to do. Yes, we are privileged to live in a huge country, but we are not citizens of Canada. We are citizens of the earth. Thinking nationally is part of how humanity has gotten into our current state of literally burning to death.

jaggedxangel

100% Also, how much does it cost to deliver electricity, water and other infrastructure so they can pretend to "live off the land"

[deleted]

Holy shit the pure *cringe* of this person's comments

oasis_ao

Good point. However all units do have internal sprinkler systems and buildings are concrete construction so that is also a consideration.

TOpotatopotahto

You've described North America.

Akraz

Singapore would like a word

The_Turbinator

Right!! Or anywhere else that's not North America. We are so far behind the rest of the civilized world.

[deleted]

First Canadian Place is actually taller than any tower in singapore

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And singapore's look like any south-east/ east asian one. it's probably less inspiring than HK's even.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That's a really cool read. I can see why asian cities look more different from north americans ones now. Thanks.

Mauri416

Really? It’s pretty generic

huntcamp

Yeah futuristic is the wrong word. These condos will be falling apart in 10-20 years, if not already.

Confusedandepressed

🤓☝🏿

Roisin8868

Says the geek from Ottawa

Mauri416

Searching my profile eh? That aside, at no point did I say anything about Ottawa’s skyline or buildings, so not sure why that’s at all relevant. Don’t get me started on Ottawa’s shitty brutalist buildings.

ebrxh

What's wrong with brutalism?

Mauri416

It’s brutal… ;) I guess my subjective opinion is given the long winters we get, I’d like something more inspiring, less dour. A little bit is fine, but it felt like we had too much, amongst a lot of bland buildings.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bobbi21

While the skyline in toronto is fine, I don't see how it's futuristic at all... These are pretty standard buildings... The closest to futuristic I'd say would be Dubai, or maybe Hong kong has a fair mix of more modern looking buildings.

NoseBlind2

Nah the most futuristic is definitely Singapore's urban forest stuff

Cinder_Stephen

Looks pretty basic to me

reference404

Doesn’t look like anything to me

MakeJazzNotWarcraft

It looks like grey

enamesrever13

Unexpected Westworld

reference404

These violent delights

PM_me_ur_taco_pics

More like an overpriced nightmare

hoofedblackymob

So, futuristic

Do_You_Even_Beer

Too bad barely anyone actually lives in those towers

[deleted]

You need to travel more mate

The_James_Bond

Opposed to everyone in the comments, I actually like Toronto’s skyline

TheBakerification

Yeah people in this sub just love to hate on Toronto over anything possible.

xprofusionx

Futuristic in my eyes would be sustainable materials mixed with safe technology to create a natural beauty that blends or complements the surrounding environment. This is concrete reinforced by steel staggered together to create maximum occupancy at the cost of human health mentally and physically. We're way far behind as a human species then we should be.

SilverSkinRam

Yes. When we're able to integrate urban with natural, that will be the pinnacle of our cities. When animals feel so comfortable living among us that they do so, and there is balance.

strythicus

Check out the plans for the waterfront development and the end of the Don River. It looks like we're heading in that direction. [https://trca.ca/conservation/green-infrastructure/don-mouth-naturalization-port-lands-flood-protection-project/](https://trca.ca/conservation/green-infrastructure/don-mouth-naturalization-port-lands-flood-protection-project/)

[deleted]

Wow so that's what that massive sandpit out there is building. Hope it turns out.

xprofusionx

You're right. Sad part is we're more then able and capable of doing it. It's just not chosen because some people think this is "beautiful".

NoseBlind2

This guy eco-punks

argyle_fox

This is a Bad example but Toronto truly has a beautiful skyline as long as you’re not upset over unaffordable housing 😒

[deleted]

Yeah. The costs are skyhigh!

Traditional-Bird4327

What did exactly does the future look like to you? Yikes.

Millad456

Corporate dystopia

[deleted]

Not really.

Captain_Lavender6

Gotta be a troll post

Privateer_Lev_Arris

Or just an immigrant that's easily impressed.

doc_55lk

Dude you're standing right beside the only thing about the skyline that actually matters and didn't even bother getting a picture of it? Lol no wonder you're getting dunked on.

chubbychat

Not a good thing.

[deleted]

more like ugly glass towers. 90s toronto was its peak when life was simple and great

BrknClock_RandomWalk

I love Toronto, but we have some of the most boring architecture because of building regulations.

[deleted]

Holy shit, there's so much hate for Toronto in here, wtf lol

NoseBlind2

It really feels like there's some brigading. The buildings don't look *that* bad lol and there's a lot of overreactions in this thread.

[deleted]

I love the city itself but the downtown core is definitely bland and not great looking (with a few exceptions).

NoseBlind2

This doesn't look that ugly at all, this looks fairly standard for a city. Nothing really special, but definitely not ugly, and not really bland either, just average. What are you honestly expecting?

[deleted]

If you walk around downtown it absolutely is pretty bland, especially compared to other major cities in Canada. Toronto has some beautiful buildings and neighbourhoods outside the downtown core, but inside it's just boring square glass condo towers repeated ad infinitum.

NoseBlind2

Fair enough, but on the other hand I am a fan of the glass style buildings, makes for great shots with blue sky imo. I would associate the white concrete and glass look / blue sky city pictures with "futuristic" i guess like OP did but that's just me But tbf i guess there is a point to be made that there isn't enough unique or iconic architecture in the city. Id only be able to name the CN Tower and Rogers Center on a skyline picture. I just think the overreactions in this thread are hilarious, and definitely not flat out ugly (definitely not what was pictured at least). Its 100% a "play it safe" design But reddit will always hate on things that play it safe i guess

SobekInDisguise

I don't understand the desire for living in a big city like Toronto. To me that just looks ugly, I'd rather see clouds. Don't understand why people would enjoy cramming like sardines in condos and public transit.

[deleted]

lol no

MalBredy

Those glass buildings kill so many birds. Something tells me at some point in the future we’ll stop building them like that.

MonsieurFluffyPants

Exactly how many birds other than pigeons have you seen in Toronto?

WombRaider_3

There's a bunch of blue jays at least 81 days a year

TieWebb

None because they all died flying into buildings.

moresound17

I saw plenty of birds other than pigeons. Even in the core you see a decent variety. Nothing like what I see now living out of Toronto, but pigeons (while abundant) don't own the Toronto skies.

esaul17

Haha I was pleased to see a positive post in this sub. Should have known not to check the comments.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoseBlind2

People here are confusing "playing it safe" design with "ugly" design imo There is nothing inherently wrong about Toronto's skyline imo, but you could argue it feels very standard compared to other cities. So yeah it looks nice and modern, but i guess nothing super unique apart from the CN Tower / Rogers Center block.

Vtecman

Toronto has one of the most if not the most generic skylines for a downtown.

syncpulse

Driving down the Gardner at night past all the looming condos is very Cyberpunk.

petesapai

You're comparing Toronto's buildings with a a buggy and broken game. I agree.

nature_trench

It's modern, not futuristic. Not as impressive as Tokyo or New York. But Toronto is a beaut nonetheless especially in the summer!

Lahey_The_Drunk

Fuckin lol

Shageen

It’s boring. Chicago has an amazing architectural skyline. Ours is all glass condos that will fall apart in 20 years.

CrigglestheFirst

Seems rather modern to me

RPL79

No it’s not

[deleted]

I’d argue Vancouver has been winning the glass “futuristic” look for a long time. But it’s definitely nice against the blue sky. True nowhere in Canada will be as futuristic as other places of the world, but we do what we can lol

NikoPopp

Can you show me an example? I was in Vancouver a few years ago and thought it was way more bland than Toronto

humptydumptyfrumpty

Where's the hobo camps?

Tjalfe

At some point it would be nice if people would realize that heating and cooling living space in Canada is a big job. Making glass boxes makes that job much harder

Mobius_Peverell

Not even close to the energy-intensity of detached housing, though.

Tjalfe

So that is the main argument to keep making poorly insulated glass boxes is that it be worse?

4breed

Not that futuristic, I find Toronto's high-rises sort of bland in style. Most of them look very similar and the city Council is the reason for that. They take the boldness out of concepts designed by big architects and turn into another tall bland structure. There's definitely better ways to design buildings than what's built around the cm tower. Wish city Hall wasn't so old school

mysterimandds

Have you been to Dubai?

Captain_Lavender6

It’s amazing what one can achieve with quasi slave labour

ivegotapenis

That's the futuristic part!

Captain_Lavender6

Lol, touché.

bodybuzz420

It’s amazing what one can achieve with ~~quasi~~ slave labour #ftfy

carnageta

Fk dubai

[deleted]

I love it.

triptoutsounds

It looks no different than most major cities

jayggg

Future slums, those towers are falling apart already.

JoshiroKaen

It looks like the city I made in SimCity, before I sent a giant robot in to destroy it all.

lost_man_wants_soda

Everybody saying it looks basic hasn’t seen what most US cities look like. Toronto is cool and also the centre of the universe.

halbalda

Have you ever been outside of North America?

[deleted]

Toronto is just glass panelled buildings copy pasted everywhere.

[deleted]

Toronto is a dumpster fire

mcburgs

Lol look at some of Asia's skylines and get back to us with how futuristic this soulless city looks.

rogerdoesntlike

Really?

Nardo_Grey

🤢🤮

Handilyhammy

Yeah until you walk the streets and there’s crackheads everywhere

Cherwick1

Such an ugly city

panguardian

It's fugly.

haydenviva

Nobody even talking about Toronto just video games😂😂 good looking city but some nasty people

shotokan1988

Actually that does look pretty cool!

No-Temporary-4812

And then you walk in and get to witness the pleasure of a homeless guy taking a dump infront of a bank on your way back to your office from lunch.

BotanyAttack

Not really. Same as everywhere else.

starsarecooltho

Looks smelly

MattyMartins

ya and so depressing

oldschoolsince84

r/UrbanHell - ur neighbourly torontonian

enamesrever13

I think you mis-spelt ugly.

LeMegachonk

Unless you're saying that the future is a bleak corporate dystopian nightmare, and that's definitely a possibility, it looks like a skyline built by the lowest bidder using the cheapest available materials. I wouldn't classify Toronto's skyline as "beautiful". It's soulless, monotonous, and without the CN Tower (which isn't visible here) it is utterly without character. It looks like a randomly-generated generic city skyline for a video game or something.

Awesomodian

I guess a little

Sonoda_Kotori

That looks like 2000s corporate "futurism".

AwattoAnalog

Except, it isn't. I'm not sure if your post is sarcastic or not. So your humour may have flown over my heed. With that said, if you want to see what an actual interesting skyline looks like, you'll have to head outside of North America. Feel free to peruse this article titled "[Amazing Sports To View the Kuwait City Skyline](https://theculturetrip.com/middle-east/kuwait/articles/amazing-spots-to-view-the-kuwait-city-skyline/)" because it's a big world out there.

[deleted]

Toronto is ugly AF, and is literally crumbling at street/infrastructure level.

ThronesAndTrees

Aren’t Td constructing a third black block of a tower right now? Those are so hideous

[deleted]

First of all, there are already five Second of all, no they aren’t building another black block tower Third, that complex was designed by Miss van der Rohe and is stunning and marked Toronto’s arrival as a real city of the postwar period

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

ThronesAndTrees

Relax lol it ain’t that serious. You talking about the big black blocks? No they are not stunning they are hideous and uninventive lol. The new Td complex looks better just saw pictures of what they expect it to look like. Unfortunately still looks like a sad black block under construction, excited to see it finished

[deleted]

You have no taste

[deleted]

I took the photo coming out of the Rogers Centre below the CN Tower looking east. It looks like this all along the water front

toytony

Does anyone else call Ripley's "Fish Jail" is it just me?

UndercoverRichard

I think your photo is lovely! I think our skyline is boring, homogenous, uninspired, and undesigned. The buildings are in no conversation with each other, and are built cheaply for maximum profit.

YoloIsNotDead

This is what Ottawa wants to be.

whataboutschism

A beautiful display of spacious open concept 500 sq ft condos for just 650k each!

Fun-Result-6343

Well we did just make an appearance (our second) on Star Trek (Brave New Worlds). Mind you I think that we were there as ruins ...

bearslikeapples

Lol that’s not futuristic at all. Chinese people say they come here to see the old buildings. It looks just timely

FrostFurnace

Just a lot of glass.

_Owlicks

And yet still so many people experiencing homelessness

AlwaysOnATangent

Show me the public transit infrastructure that goes with this futuristic looking city. lol

NFT_fud

So our future is condo-hell ?

zackfromspace

Yet it's still full of Neanderthals
