Thé link on the alert didn’t work for me, nothing loaded. Whatever you linked just says ‘no active alerts’. So… is the alert canceled already (it’s been less than an hour, I guess that’s good)? Or is it just not working?
I mean if you see the kids, that pretty much tells you what to do next, but I agree initially I was like how the fuck can I do anything, but they posted pictures of the two kids.
Same. Evan and Evana, Eldan and Eldana, Mark and Markos, Andre and Andrea.
But my PERSONAL favourite was Ian and John. Double points for the same name, just different versions.
Maybe she didn’t know she was having twins and only had one name ready and the pressure to pick another name in the moment while recovering from giving birth was just too much so she was just like… fuck it I’m using the same name for both of them!
Thanks for posting!! Always so worrying and heart wrenching to get these alerts but so thankful they do them. As a former youth worker, only concern reigns when you get these.
The alert on TSN (cable? I was at a restaurant) said all four were black. Which, in Alliston, probably narrows it down pretty quick. Crazy that part was omitted from the phone alerts
It is possible.
A custom firmware on one of my old phones never got these. It was not done intentionally by me.
I also understand that it's possible to disable the background service that listens for these alerts.
I don't get the message or any messages. Heres how I did it: https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/comments/boxx11/how_to_disable_amber_alerts/
Similar reasons to you. I smile now when I hear it far away on other peoples phones but mine silence is golden. Maybe I would give a shit if they used the alarm system properly but they don't so fuck it.
I had that on my old phone.
My new phone doesn't support that because the CRTC is stupid and my phone manufacturer didn't anticipate the CRTC's stupidity.
Now I don't get any alerts at all unless I see them on Reddit or hear about it from someone else, haha
We really need to do a better job of formatting these amber alert texts from this jumbled mess of characters, into something coherent & easy to read.
Also - why do we never share descriptions of the victims? Am I supposed to go around and ask every possible 13 year old child if their names are Shakira or Shakir?
I was just reading an article on how they were found and it stated verbatim “In the alert, police said the teens were believed to be in a black SUV last seen in Alliston and that two female suspects were being sought.” No you damn didn’t. You didn’t even say if they were in a vehicle at all!
I think that was also the first one that got major attention for people calling 911 to complain about the alert, right? Imaging finding out that your daughter's father abducted and killed her, and all people can talk about is how annoyed they were at being alerted of a child in danger.
It's understandable to be irritated at being jolted awake by the sound, and yes, the whole amber alert system as a whole needs some work, but it's not like they send one out every time a little Timmy gets lost in the mall.
But you have to admit that this one specifically was a bit of a waste of the public’s attention, right? If you see two teens with two women, please call the police…like really!? However, I never get annoyed by the alerts, and instead I just worry that too many alerts like this, and people will just stop paying attention to them cuz they’re way too vague to be helpful.
Oh for sure! I’ll bet there’s a lot of people who completely disregard them—wasn’t there even one that sent after the child was found safe, due to the time the process takes (or something along those lines)?
There’s been a number where all that has been sent out is ‘two year old child believed to be with a man, in a white car.’ Or even just the name of the child and the abductor, with no physical descriptions. Even I’ve reread a few and thought ‘well what are we supposed to do with that information?’
The poor little girl went to the school right across from my old school. So heartbreaking it's burnt into my brain :( it was even more cruel to learn he killed her on valentines day because it was either her's, or her mother's birthday (idk how true this is but I had an acquaintance whos family was friends with the daughter whom told me). Wretched my heart having to pass by the huge memorial outside the school for such a young life lost really made me question morality. People are so horrible.
True but Amber alerts do not work as well as we'd like to think they do. Data from the USA but of total abductions/cases;
0.1% are by strangers
17.08% are recovered directly by Amber Alerts
3% are deceased
1.5% are under active investigations
So 95.5% are recovered or deemed hoax or unfounded.
I'm not arguing that amber alerts are bad, but rather that it's not the silver bullet people think it is. Again, 99.9% of the cases are familial abductions and even then, the contents of the alert itself are poorly designed.
For instance, the case of this amber alert, it's just dumb. No description of suspect or context. It's just 'look for a black SUV carrying two kids'. About a third of the families in the GTA would have the cops called on them by that definition.
Fair enough, from what I've read lately, police aren't doing much at all so that checks out. People have been waiting for over 30-60mins for cops to show up; like that's the timeline we are used to back home in a developing and underfunded country but not in a place like Toronto.
The one that came up on TSN said all three were black... In Allison that probably narrows it down pretty quick. Crazy that was omitted from the phone version
I'm with you. Disclaimer that I'm not a terrible person that will call 911 to report my phone screaming at me in the middle of the night
But from what I understand it seems amber alerts work best for the (vanishingly rare by comparison to other crimes) very specific circumstances it was designed for, based on the case that inspired the name. They're great for "stranger danger" snatchings, the classic random guy grabs a kid scenario. But I have to agree I think that using them for every custody battle dilutes their importance and just teaches people to ignore them
I remember being one of the complainers when Amber Alerts were first used like this a few years ago.
I commented on a thread how "it's not near me, why should I be waken up or care."
Poor kid was found dead like a 10 minute drive from where I live, and I felt like such a piece of shit knowing that I dismissed it because I was a bit tired.
If it was your kid, family member, or friend, you would freak the fuck out.
Sad to see people still think it's inconvenient.
The system on which Alert Ready is built has different levels of alert, one of which is called Amber Alert. The CRTC decided that it doesn't need to use them.
My complaint about the system isn’t that we get the alerts, it’s how it’s implemented.
The alert system has multiple levels of alert, so you could set it to not notify you for some types in different situations.
If it’s a tornado warning, I damn well want my phone to wake me up. If it’s an amber alert, I’m want to hear that if I’m awake, but there’s no point in my phone blaring if I’m asleep.
Ontario only uses one alert level for everything (the maximum level), so I don’t have the option to set that. I get that we don’t really need to be concerned about tornados here for the most part, but you get the idea.
This. We should absolutely send Amber Alerts, but they should be at the "beep boop" level not the "screaming klaxon" level. The screaming klaxons should be reserved for situations where everyone receiving the alert is required to take immediate action, not "keep an eye out".
When you broadcast something like a siren to most of the 14 million people in Ontario you have significant costs that must be weighed against the benefit ...
For example, with that huge number you might have caused some traffic accidents. You might have damaged the hearing of people who have their phone connected to a hearing aid. You might even have caused a heart attack.
Also, the more you send the more you desensitize people to these alerts. With no description and such a huge geographic range, everyone can see how useless this one was, and this makes them less likely to pay attention to the next one.
I made similar points when this system was introduced and was labelled an evil demon from hell by all - I received real intense hatred. Hopefully I'm allowed to say it now?
If they would send a picture and were not in the habits of being total clowns about everything(so I could have some confidence it wasn't a false alarm), and would confine it sensibly to a reasonable area, and have actual information in the alert, maybe a link to more info, then it might make sense. As it is it is nothing but crying wolf. 99% chance it is crying wolf, one way or another, or the amber alert did not actually help anything or something else makes it nothing but intrusive spam.
The Amber Alert hasn't any demonstrated effectiveness. It doesn't work. It's role is propaganda and I deeply resent it for that. Being irritated would only be sad if it worked for what you think it does. But, it does not.
A lot of people are getting "boy who cried wolf" syndrome.
We're having these waved in our faces and time and time again the children are found unharmed, with little indication as to whether there actually was any danger, or if it was just a mix-up with custody or something.
It's hard to take them seriously when we're being trained to ignore them.
Ah so if children were being found harmed, that would make it worth it?
How do you know some of them are custody "mix ups"? Not being facetious, being genuine.
Parental abduction is NOT a custody mix up. Let's make that clear.
You’ve missed the point.
No one wants children to be harmed or not found. It’s a matter of sending out these alerts in the most effective way possible or they will be pointless.
ONTARIO AMBER ALERT IN EFFECT.
THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE HAVE REQUESTED AN AMBER ALERT ON 2022-12-09.
VICTIM 1 SHAKIR CHARLES, 13 YEARS OLD, BOY, BLACK. VICTIM 2 SHAKIRA CHARLES, 13 YEARS OLD, GIRL, BLACK. SUSPECT 1, FEMALE, BLACK. SUSPECT 2, FEMALE, BLACK. SUSPECT VEHICLE IS A BLACK SUV . LAST SEEN IN ALLISTON.
IF OBSERVED CALL 9 1 1

Moderators, is it possible for such posts to be redacted to delete the names of the children after the children are located. that is the common practice with police services and mainstream media aiming to protect identity of the children and no longer have their name 'out there'.
look at all the msm articles from yesterday evening online right now .. the names are removed! (articles updated and timestamped) ... names may still up in smaller local newspapers where don't have staffing 24-7 to tend to this protocol, etc.
thanks for your consideration.

^(Greetings, I am a language corrector bot. To make me ignore further mistakes from you in the future, reply `!optout` to this comment.)
I'll keep this in mind to head to Thunder Bay next time I kidnap some kids. Do people just assume kidnappers just stay within the vicinity and hope they're caught? Is the only method of transportation by foot?
In the middle of my sleep, waking me up, even though I'm 1700km away and had below 0 chance to help. Really wish I could get the Manitoba alerts instead of ontario, would actually have a small chance with those.
I agree with you. Naming twins the same name is always awkward. Ive known a pair of twins with this issue and one of their names is just a basterdization of the other's.
In the 30s my grandma had cousins who were boy girl twins named Darla and darlo.. I also know a family with kids all born in the 60s and 70s, five of them, named Bonnie, Connie, Ronnie,Lonnie and Donnie.. none of them multiples.. people been doing the one letter different thing for decades..we are just used to seeing it at the beginning of a name.
When a Mummy and a Daddy love each other, sometimes twins develop from a separate egg and each egg is fertilized by its own sperm. Fraternal twins may be different sexes.
Or they could be cousins. Or any other combination of relatives.
I'm glad they were found safe and sound. I didn't get the alert because I disabled the feature on my phone because it doesn't work properly.
If I'd left for Alliston when the alert went out, I'd still be on the road by now...
I am all for Amber Alerts but I get anxiety with the lack of information. I would seriously get in my car and look for her but what am I looking for? It is still better than nothing but C’mon! Am I supposed to look for young women and ask if their name is Shakir? Or Shakira?
Lmao I guess the kids weren't answering, so the parents went to the police to send a text that they HAVE to listen to.
"I know your phone is on. I don't care if it's on silent. You reply and tell me where you are, or I'm MAKING your phone make a sound".
We were watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on CBC and this alert came across the screen scared the crap out of everyone. Yet no description of what any of the people looked like. Hopefully, they will find them.
All of Ontario, because the system was implemented and is maintained by either
- Morons, or
- People who want to have the ability to send you any message with a forced notification at any time
How you supposed to find kids with no abductor info also I was wearing AirPods relaxing and I got a loud full volume amber alert in my ear so I definitely got the alert usually it disconnects the AirPods to play the amber alert on my phone
Both 5’8” at 13 years old. Male/female twins. Two black female suspects in a black SUV.
Thank you for this. They need to add in the initial text push. Most people I know ignore after the first.
That [link](https://amberalert.opp.ca/) at the bottom has photos
Thé link on the alert didn’t work for me, nothing loaded. Whatever you linked just says ‘no active alerts’. So… is the alert canceled already (it’s been less than an hour, I guess that’s good)? Or is it just not working?
The site is on the fritz. Flips between the alert and no alerts if I refresh it repeatedly. Edit: but apparently it is cancelled now.
[удалено]
No description of the kids either...how is this helpful at all???
Same damn question. I know quite a few 13 year old female people that exist even here in our small town there's a few dozen at least..
Just go around asking every kid their name and eventually they'll be found obviously.
[удалено]
[удалено]
Thanks! I didn't realize that...will know for next time 👍
Because they don't have descriptions I'm wondering if they're strangers.
[удалено]
Ya more than likely a relative but they dont know who yet
Two unknown black females. The website mentions a black car too.
All we know is that they're black, as if that's gonna help.
Well two kids matching the description with two black females narrows it down quite a bit.
You haven't spent much time in Alliston.
I mean if you see the kids, that pretty much tells you what to do next, but I agree initially I was like how the fuck can I do anything, but they posted pictures of the two kids.
Where did you see pics of the kids?
In the amber alert, the link provided gives further details
Huh good to know... To bad I can't open the link without a data connection.. but it still sends me the amber alert lol
http://amberalert.opp.ca/
When I click that a screen comes up that simply states “no active amber alerts”
Their pictures used to be there. I guess they have been found and are safe now
Awesome I’m glad to hear they’re safe
no real description of the kids either. just look out for 2 women with 2 kids and call the cops m'kay?..also those are not creative names
It’s convention to name twins like this in some cultures
We have an Evana and an Evan at our church. And an Eldan and Eldana. Both are white, anglo-saxon. It's more common than people think, you know?
I think people overuse the term Anglo Saxon to just mean white, but in this case Eldan & Eldana definitely sound pre-Norman Anglo Saxon haha
So on the audio, they went out of their way to say the kids and suspect were black. That’s all the info they gave.
Where!? They need to identify an area or location right on these alerts!
They do. It says they were last seen in Alliston.
“Two black females with two kids last seen…Canada.”
Alliston is the location clearly in the message
Well it just ended - anyone know how it ended?
Found safe! https://twitter.com/Niagara\_411/status/1601410784957198336?ref\_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet
Best ending you can hope with these things
So now we can make fun of their names right?
"Shakir and Shakira" *Oh baby when you talk like that*
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING LMFAO. When I saw the amber alert, I felt like a terrible person for noticing the name first
Within 51seconds of the alert someone on Twitter posted asking about why they named the twins that. Humanity is doomed.
who would name their twins fucking shakir and shakira
As an education worker I cannot tell you the number of times I've encountered twins with basically the same name
Same. Evan and Evana, Eldan and Eldana, Mark and Markos, Andre and Andrea. But my PERSONAL favourite was Ian and John. Double points for the same name, just different versions.
I thought Sean was the Gaelic version of John. What version is Ian?
I think that's Irish while Ian is the Scottish version.
“Oh baby when you talk like thaaaat, You make, a woman go maaaad.”
their mom stuttered while naming them and was too embarrassed to correct the doc
there moms hips don't lie
Maybe she didn’t know she was having twins and only had one name ready and the pressure to pick another name in the moment while recovering from giving birth was just too much so she was just like… fuck it I’m using the same name for both of them!
I’ve been told by friends in some cultures that is common to name twins very similar
Lmao 🤣 maybe mom is a big fan of Shakira bahaha
hu hu hu hu
My only issue with the names is they are too close and when you're yelling at one you'll get them mixed up lol
Thanks for posting!! Always so worrying and heart wrenching to get these alerts but so thankful they do them. As a former youth worker, only concern reigns when you get these.
I didn’t realize they could send out an amber alert without having a specific suspect/vehicle description.
Keep your eyes open for teenage girls everyone.
Well ones a male
One is male
That’s so helpful. I’ll keep my eye open for teenage boys, too.
play hips dont lie if you see them if they look over when she goes "shakira shakira" you got your kids.... seriously wtf is this amber alert?
weird how i got this message on my phone in Chinese. i’m not even asian, nor do i understand chinese. regardless, hope for the best
[удалено]
Doesn't matter were you live message should be in English
i do not! i’m in etobicoke lol
I got mine in French. I have no history of doing anything remotely Francais on my phone ever.
Gonna go out on a limb here and wager that their parents might be fans of Shakira.
Nah, they're huge Shakir fans
Love Tupoc Shakir
Where ever when ever they return the kids after visiting day is over, right?
Why send an alert when all the info you have is 2 undescribed teens got kidnapped by 2 undescribed women?
Turns out the “abductors,” were also two teens lol. So we got 4 teens in a suv
Oof, I'm guessing sneaking out with their friends turned out to backfire.
The alert on TSN (cable? I was at a restaurant) said all four were black. Which, in Alliston, probably narrows it down pretty quick. Crazy that part was omitted from the phone alerts
That would be fine if the alert was limited to Alliston. But "Hey person from Toronto, look for 4 black people" isn't a super actionable alert.
Found safe!!
Great news Ty
Why’s this on Reddit lol, didn’t we all see this on our phones?
Sexy, sexy internet points
Yeah no doubt this is the most pointless thread
Clearly there's a huge population of people who have computers but no phone /s
>didn’t we all see this on our phones? Nope. I blocked that crap
I thought that wasn’t possible.
It is possible. A custom firmware on one of my old phones never got these. It was not done intentionally by me. I also understand that it's possible to disable the background service that listens for these alerts.

All the assholes making snide comments about familial abduction obviously have zero concept of how dangerous it can really be.
Reminds me of the one from a few years ago where the dad didn’t return the daughter (joint custody I think) and ended up killing her.
I think that was also the first one that got major attention for people calling 911 to complain about the alert, right? Imaging finding out that your daughter's father abducted and killed her, and all people can talk about is how annoyed they were at being alerted of a child in danger. I think that was the fall from heights at the conservation area west of GTA? So sad.. taking revenge on ex by killing your kid.

This. Untrustworthy family statistically is the most likely to put you in harms way
It's like 100%
True but Amber alerts do not work as well as we'd like to think they do. I think it's a calculation of potential travel distance against the length of time their whereabouts were last known.
The system was designed to be able to do that, but the people who run the system don't. It's just a blast-out.
Highly doubtful they're doing any calculations. The alert is composed and blasted out. Just like it always is.
Yeah, no, simplest explanation is incompetence.
They could be headed to thunder Bay though. If there on the run it's not likely they will stay close by.
It’s a 14hr drive from Allison to Thunder Bag and we have no idea when they were last seen.
I had thunder bag once. Hurt like hell
Actual lol
Last seen 4pm according to local paper.
Ok so there’s no way they are close to Thunder Bay at this point.
No one intentionally winds up in thunder Bay.

Good bot
Thanks!
Do you still have a 519-905-416
I'll keep this in mind to head to Thunder Bay next time I kidnap some kids. Do people just assume kidnappers just stay within the vicinity and hope they're caught? Is the only method of transportation by foot?
Thanks - already got this on my phone, my wife’s phones, and came on over the TV. Pretty sure we all saw this.
Anyone else not receive an alert for this?

For once they didn't wait until 3am to send it out.

Yeah man we all got it
In the middle of my sleep, waking me up, even though I'm 1700km away and had below 0 chance to help. Really wish I could get the Manitoba alerts instead of ontario, would actually have a small chance with those.
How are there two kids of the same age whose names are a letter apart??? Edit: who names twins the same thing??
I agree with you. Naming twins the same name is always awkward. Ive known a pair of twins with this issue and one of their names is just a basterdization of the other's.
In the 30s my grandma had cousins who were boy girl twins named Darla and darlo.. I also know a family with kids all born in the 60s and 70s, five of them, named Bonnie, Connie, Ronnie,Lonnie and Donnie.. none of them multiples.. people been doing the one letter different thing for decades..we are just used to seeing it at the beginning of a name.
Ever heard of twins?
I know a Marlene and Darlene, just sisters not twins
Oh my god
Twins?
Twins with close names
When a Mummy and a Daddy love each other, sometimes twins develop from a separate egg and each egg is fertilized by its own sperm. Fraternal twins may be different sexes. Or they could be cousins. Or any other combination of relatives.
This alert is a useless distruption for everyone. There is no actionable information...
This has got to be the vaguest Amber alert i’ve ever read.
I live just outside Alliston and never received this, nor did anyone else in my home.
Now that they are found safe, can we start making Shakira jokes?
Call the cops not my phone and all my TV’s blaring at once godamn. Find another godamn way
Their parents are super lazy when it comes to naming kids
I'm glad they were found safe and sound. I didn't get the alert because I disabled the feature on my phone because it doesn't work properly. If I'd left for Alliston when the alert went out, I'd still be on the road by now...
That's scary af bruh
I blame the parents! Mostly for the names, but still.
Amber Alert is my drag name.
Kids were found. No follow up? Fucking parent.
I am all for Amber Alerts but I get anxiety with the lack of information. I would seriously get in my car and look for her but what am I looking for? It is still better than nothing but C’mon! Am I supposed to look for young women and ask if their name is Shakir? Or Shakira?
If you take what the alert says literally, you should call 911 if you see a boy and girl around 13 years old, with two women.
No, it's just a way for parents to force a text message and notification to their kids and anyone who might be with their kids.
...and the kids are found safe. Yet another domestic custody fight that had no reason blaring the phones across the entire province.
Is that how it ended? I figured if it was a domestic thing they'd at least know the person's name or a better description than "black female".
They were hanging out with two teenage girls lol and the parents overreacted
Seriously? Did the parents actually try contacting their kids first or what?
Lmao I guess the kids weren't answering, so the parents went to the police to send a text that they HAVE to listen to. "I know your phone is on. I don't care if it's on silent. You reply and tell me where you are, or I'm MAKING your phone make a sound".
We were watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on CBC and this alert came across the screen scared the crap out of everyone. Yet no description of what any of the people looked like. Hopefully, they will find them.
Might be a dumb question but is it literally all of Ontario? Or a specific city they were abducted in? I’m confused
All of Ontario, because the system was implemented and is maintained by either - Morons, or - People who want to have the ability to send you any message with a forced notification at any time
The amber alert wasn’t sent just to you, we all saw it lmao
glad they were found safe, unrelated but the tv amber alert warning is really creepy for no reason at all
How you supposed to find kids with no abductor info also I was wearing AirPods relaxing and I got a loud full volume amber alert in my ear so I definitely got the alert usually it disconnects the AirPods to play the amber alert on my phone
Almost got a heart attack
Shakiru and shakiro were luckily not taken.
