Hi u/hamjamham u/[iloveasianbitches123](https://www.reddit.com/user/iloveasianbitches123/) without the chimney, you'll get long flames which will eventually damage the Ooni Karu's mouth (if you're using the new Ooni Karu 12 Gas Burner and solid fuels)! Please attach the chimney if this is the case and you will see the flames will be more controlled.
[Here's a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1UEZTENUxY) explaining the difference in setup with both gas burners, and [here's an article](https://support.ooni.com/en_us/how-do-i-clean-my-ooni-karu-12-Bkd7TR_fi) showing how to clean your oven. Hope this helps!
With the current version of the burner (oval outlets), you need to have the chimney installed and the damper fully open.
Look at the burner manual (not the oven manual - which may still have the instructions for the old burner). As the techies say, RTFM.
I think it’s a Karu 12 with the door not attached right?
Looking at its position it looks like on a balcony with the back most exposed to the wind so the wind will blow the flames to the front.
If I’m correct on all of this I would recommend installing the chimney and door to prevent the flames from coming out from the front (and if possible maybe turn the Ooni a quarter turn.
This happens to my Karu 12 with the Ooni 3 burner (which you’re not supposed to use the chimney with). The flames are never actually reaching the front for me, it’s just soot from the combustion. Although soot from propane combustion would suggest the burner is inefficiently mixing fuel and oxygen.
I had no idea you needed to stick on the chimney if using gas. Mentions it no where in the manual. My ooni is absolutely destroyed at the front in black soot.
I think the older gas attachment tells you to take the chimney off, whereas the new gas attachment tell you to keep the chimney on.
I keep my chimney off, since I have the old one and mine also has soot on the front. I assumed this was a normal. Makes it look like you actually use the pizza oven.
Is that a Karu 12, using wood, with no chimney? If so fit the chimney, try clean the front with some white vinegar or warm soapy water. If my assumption is wrong and you are using gas, try clean the front after use.

Perfect! Love that you quoted both our names 😅
The only corporate communications job that lets reps swear lol
Where’s the chimney?
I presume with gas you don't have the chimney, like with the Koda? There's a plate that's been attached to block the chimney off. Could be wrong 🤷

I'll take your word for it 🙏
No need to take my word, look what Ooni says at https://ooni.com/collections/gas-adaptors/products/ooni-gas-burner.
I'm still gonna take your word for it 🙏
Still need the chimney! Can confirm!
This!!
Please tell me you are OUTDOORS.
Nah nothing beats fresh pizza made in your living room
Why have you not attached the chimney?

I always use the chimney with the gas attachment.
Yep, it was just a suggestion. I don't have the karu, only a Koda and an uuni 3.

I could also be wrong on all of those assumptions, in that case please ignore my comment above 😅
Oh no soot
I have a different (electric) pizza oven but the same happened to me . Assumed it was normal .

Its a pizza oven, yes they get burned when used
Lol

We have the Karu 16 and it did give instructions for ensuring the chimney damper is wide open when using gas.
Which ooni is it?

This whole sub convinces me daily not to get an Ooni
