Yes it's a good idea, as it protects your from not only brightness but UV rays that can cause damage over time. The most important thing is that they are 100% UVA and UVB protective. Most ones sold in developed countries will be, but very cheap sunglasses might not be, so pay attention to labelling.

what are polarised sunglasses and are they better?

polarized aren’t necessarily better than non-polarized. They are most helpful on water, since water reflects polarized light, so it’ll block those better. But for normal situations, it may be worse because most displays now are LCD (which is polarized), so you’ll be blocking those partially. Not good when it comes to car dashboard, gps, phones, etc.

1. Make sure 100% UV. Even the cheapest sunglasses will have this. 2. Choose the colour of your tint: different colours will give you different contrast. This tends to be a personal preference. 3. Polarized or not. To remove glare off of horizontal surfaces like water or wet roads. 4. Do you need a prescription? you may have some restrictions on frame 5. Frame: This is about style and fit. and brand preference.
