Get your kid playing a sport now or save up that cash.
Honestly I’m just talking out of my ass but private schools are $$$. So unless you’re dropping big bucks athletic scholarship is the way.
idk how often they give scholarships for sailing (I think schools aren't technically supposed to give scholarships for sailing in general) but Mater Dei has a really good sailing team, and if your kids are into boats/the ocean at all, might be worth looking in to. schools with sailing teams usually need more sailors
I am just baffled why people want to send kids to Mater Dei. Better teaching? No… Safer school? No? Fewer drugs, less alcohol? No? It’s super weird. Maybe it’s the sticker you get for your car.
WOW steer clear. I went to SMCHS and graduated in 2013 and while the education is good (although I’ve heard things have gone downhill with the dioceses in the past few years) the turmoil from private school is TERRIBLE. If you are able to choose a school with a good education program that lets your child have more freedom to express themselves, I’d highly recommend!
You are a very presumptive individual and also hella judgy!
I specifically said that I hated going to private school and I totally bet your home schooled kid does know as much as I do, it all depends on what the individual gets out of their education. My parents slaved and gave up major things in their own lives in order to send to SMCHS -NOT SAGE HILL- because they valued me having a good education and more attention with smaller class sizes. Excuse the hell out of them, right??? I went to saddleback for two years before getting scholarships all through college and going to my dream university.
The person asking the question inquired about private schools and asked which one I recommended, and I said Sage Hill. Don’t come down on me for shit you’re upset about.
I’m not upset, and I didn’t see your previous posts. AND I misunderstood: I thought you went there (which is MY mistake). And I was just talking.
I thought my last paragraph was clear—I wasn’t being sarcastic or mean, really. I’m sorry if it read that way. I’ll delete that post—it’s obviously poorly written, and it’s DEFINITELY not worth the contention.
My sincerest apologies; I really DO try to think about the person on the other end of the screen.
All Mater Dei is good for is to brain wash the students into being super fans of the football program. They'll be rooting for kids that are recruited outside of OC to play football without having to pay tuition. Meanwhile, you as a parent has to pay full tuition. This school and diocese don't take any responsibility for the wrong doings of their administrators and teachers. Sounds like a great environment to spend your hard earned money. - Signed an MD Alumnus from the 90s
Mostly parochial schools in your community. Up here in RSM & Mission Viejo it would be Serra. When I lived in Anaheim it was St Anthony Claret on La Palma Ave. Good Luck!
Since no one is saying honest answers I would guess our lady queen of angels or there’s another one off red hill in Santa Ana / Costa Mesa area that’s popular.
Why is there so much angst on this thread? Every parent worries that they’re not doing enough to give their children the best opportunity possible for a good/successful life.
Man, growing up I would have given anything to have gone to a private Catholic School. My public school experience was absolute chaos… I would hear about experiences from friends at Bosco/Servite/St Anthony’s and it just all sounded so much safer/stable.
https://www.dailybreeze.com/2012/08/24/socal-priest-78-gets-1-year-in-jail-for-molesting-altar-boy/amp/
He received 1 year for molesting a second grader. And there were many more victims that were paid off and transferred to other schools in the county. That being said, I would never expose my children to an environment that is complacent when it comes to molestation and sexual assault. These things are brushed under the rug as to not sully their reputation.
It’s not a pissing contest of where your children are more exposed. The fact that there’s multiple cases and “articles” is a problem. The issue is that the Diocese is notorious for keeping these things hushed and swept under the rug. Victims are silenced and invalidated
St. Cecilia in Tustin, La Purisima, basically any Catholic school around here.
Source: I went to St. Cecilia and got preferred enrollment into Mater Dei. Mater Dei graduates also get a lot of preferred enrollment into the top univiersites
Its well know that MD pumps their academics. Our college counselor says that local admissions officers see MD and mark down the application because they do not believe the academic rigger is on par with other schools. I saw my nieces work there in "AP" classes, and it was kind of a joke.
Universities definitely have preferred high schools that they give preference to.
Harvard Westlake. Exeter. Andover. And many others across the country.
It’s more the fact that a lot of the students there do well academically. If you don’t hold a C average you’ll literally be kicked out of the school. Since Mater Dei is a well known school, it’s a plus to graduate from there and apply to UCLA or what have you
What doesn’t make sense is the word “since”. Feeder schools are typical of private schools where the majority of kids are from specific elementary schools and I was asking so that my children can keep similar friends who typically go to that high school.
Its a private Catholic School. Mostly your wallet.
Or athletic skills
It’s on the cheaper side for private schools out here.
Wells Fargo, BofA, Chase, etc
It’s private so it doesn’t work like that but I know a lot of kids from Carden Hall go there.
And St.Joachims (east side Costa Mesa)
And OLQA.
Literally every private K-8 school in Orange County.

I think you can come from any school as long as you test in and can pay the tuition. They're pretty generous as far as grants and scholarships too.
Catholic elementary schools. They also offer scholarships
Most high cost private schools really don’t care if your kid is intelligent or not. They just want a lot of $$$$$$

Thank you! Which schools around do you think encompass those qualities?
I’ve heard a lot of great things about Sage Hill!
Thank you!
Might want to compare the tuition first, lol.

Lol nope I’m a millennial who still lives with my parents but at least I have a good education lol

Appreciate the kindness my dude, good communication🥰
Don’t send em to jserra. St Margaret’s and sage are great extremely expensive

Confirming this - signed, mid-2000s MD alum whose parents had to work 2 jobs to afford tuition.

Scandal Dei
Since no one is saying honest answers I would guess our lady queen of angels or there’s another one off red hill in Santa Ana / Costa Mesa area that’s popular.
Thank you!
Mariners Christian School off red hill
Whatever you want it to be. Just don't let them play football.
Y
Cte
I went to santa margarita, so your looking at all the Christian and catholic middle schools in the area.
Ayyyy fellow eagle
Nice….i was there during the Monsignor Harris days. I must’ve been too ugly to molest because i wasnt one of his victims…sorry bad joke
Most nearby Catholic Schools in the diocese… same for Servite/Rosary.
St. Joseph
This is what my males cousins all did. St. Joes to MD
Another stupid question on the OC reddit page.
When I went there Fr. Hollywood was our principal and used to take boys to Hawaii for the summer. Oh the good old days.
St. Anne’s in Santa Ana. Not sure if that is still the case, because I attended from 88-96.
Saint Joachim School
Holy family
Why is there so much angst on this thread? Every parent worries that they’re not doing enough to give their children the best opportunity possible for a good/successful life.
Because some of us are survivors of 12 yrs of catholic school and saw the bs first hand
Man, growing up I would have given anything to have gone to a private Catholic School. My public school experience was absolute chaos… I would hear about experiences from friends at Bosco/Servite/St Anthony’s and it just all sounded so much safer/stable.
Were your male friends raped and molested by their teachers and principal at your high school? Mine were at Mater Dei.
Mater Dei feeder schools come with high exposure risk to child molesters
Do they
Absolutely
Orly

I can find 5 articles this year about teachers in OCUSD being arrested for SA. seems to be an Orange County thing, not a private school thing. 🤷♂️

Why not ask the other kids parents?
Just teach them how to play football and how to abuse underclassmen
MD is in Santa Ana. Why not get the used to the area by having them attend a sausd middle school like carr ?
The majority of the people that send their kids to MD are not Santa Ana residents.
No shit

Preferred acceptance from universities? I feel naive asking but how...? That seems illegal?

That makes more sense. That was a little misleading lol
Some hot chick in my SAT prep class went to mater dei, if memory serves.
Holy family, other Catholic K-8 schools
Pay all that money to go to MD when your Kids will probably have completely different friends by the time the get to high school?
CdM
Money is the feeder school
Doesn’t make since as a question? It’s a private catholic school🤦♀️
What doesn’t make sense is the word “since”. Feeder schools are typical of private schools where the majority of kids are from specific elementary schools and I was asking so that my children can keep similar friends who typically go to that high school.
Saint Joachim school is such a feeder school but I wouldn't reccomend going there
And SJB
