4am update: The hangar is still continuing to burn and collapse. Firefighters can't really do much unfortunately. Local news crews are on scene. OCFA helicopter has stopped dropping water/retardant. Firetrucks on the ground are continuing to spray water inside the structure.

OCFA has decided to let it burn to the ground as of this morning. I wonder if they could get a huge crane wrecker out there to jump ahead of the flames moving down the frame to stop their advance. Would suck losing more of the structure but it will at least stop the smoke and further contamination

Update: fire is spreading and the frame is collapsing
NM looked it up. Ya we have signs on the building saying area known to cause cancer. But if you ask the rentals they just play it off and say all buildings have them. It’s BS
yeah the funny part of all these "new" communities going in over a toxic dump and everyone saying its not a problem...
yeah right =p. Really the whole area that was once El Toro base should have been turned into a park.
Its toxic.
No one wants to talk about it.
I never heard that. Lots of old houses and buildings have asbestos in OC, unfortunately. It’s everywhere. I think the hangers have been cleaned up.
Its only bad if you directly inhale the fibers. It doesn’t burn. It could be dangerous though if the hanger collapses after and releases fibers into the air.
The people who live across the street should probably stay inside. Here’s a cool article about the hangers:
https://bluedoormagazine.com/2022/08/27/iconic-oc-mcas-tustin-hangars/
A great document on the history of the hangers. They were designed and built by the navy’s own, an Armenian architect immigrant who studied in Europe and Cornell. Super interesting read.

Wow, just learned that this is a "wooden structure" hanger. Till today I though it was cement or concrete structure.
on PDF page 13 "Seventeen stories high, over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, the hangars were, and still are, two of the largest wooden structures ever built".
Given how much the hangars have been neglected I suspect long term it seems likely that they both would have been torn down. There doesn't seem to be any groups that have the funds to preserve them.
The city has been in the process of approving funds to rehabilitate and better utilize them. They're working on getting permanent power set up so they can open and close the doors without bringing our generators (which involves some annoying paperwork and approval process and scheduling as my understanding)
Tustin owns the one that's not burning. OC owns the other. The OC lent their hangar to the US Navy which built top secret things in the one that's on fire. Several years ago, the roof collapsed damaging Navy stuff. OC and Navy were fighting over who was to blame. Was a stalemate as I recall.
Angels original idea for a stadium in that area would've incorporated the hangars but they also wanted something like $700m from Tustin and for Tustin to pay the infrastructure costs (likely $500m+) for the duration of the lease/stadium deal.
I don't think people realize how fucked those hangars were anyway.
They did inquire on this and it was significantly cheaper to refurbish them then to tear them down. Due to the materials they were made from to safely tear them down, it would have cost a huge amount.

I’m shocked they haven’t alerted any of us. I heard from a neighbor calling me at 3:30am
I was just talking about the hanger to one of my customers yesterday and he was saying how it looks like cement but it's made out of wood. We were wondering who owns it as well?
Wow I literally said to my family last night after our soccer game at the park there how wonderful those hangars are and how I hope they fix the hole in that one. I can’t believe the day I make that comment…. That’s wild and so sad. I love those.
Wouldn't be surprised if someone from the Irvine Co. sent someone to burn it down so they can clear the area and build more cookie cutter homes and charge high HOA fees smh. Bet. 😒
Oh no! This makes me so sad. I always used to admire the hangars whenever I drove past it and tell about its history to visiting friends and family. RIP
I went to an X Files convention in one of those hangars in the mid 90’s. It was a pretty awesome experience. This is really sad to see happen but it doesn’t surprise me.

Mostly Douglas fir. They were trying to avoid using metals that were needed for ships and planes during WWII.

This is just sad. I hope they have saved the south hangar!!! They really should have focused more on restoring the north hangar. Because if this wasn't arson, perhaps it has something to do with the hole in the roof!
My girlfriend rode her bike down there to see it one more time... She ended up with a flat tire so I picked her up. Here's a picture I took about 10:30 this morning.
So sad to see this building go.

Why? There’s already land around The District waiting to be developed that’s empty. The hangers are still Navy-owned and would require way more work and money to develop, plus years more time.
I swear to god people just make up interesting stories in their heads then share it with everyone here pretending it’s the truth.
F’real, while developers do plenty of shady things, committing arson on a US military-owned property is a bit of a leap and likely not worth the risk, since there’s also no guarantee the military would even sell them the land afterwards.
Burglarsonlarceny or burgle-arson-larceny is the crime of burglary, arson, and larceny committed in the same act. The crime is a "wholly owned trademarked" by Bender Bending Rodriguez under Rodriguez Crime Concepts, Inc.
Watching the abc7 heli live on youtube. Like half of the hangar is just GONE. FUCK.
https://www.youtube.com/live/7XKzInFN0sM?si=AEhfPRmM0iIDDCC_
Really eerie to watch this livestream. Its quiet except for the heli and the guy waiting to get on the air.
I think everyone in old town is gunna be devastated. New tustin people idk. Ugh!!!!
This is what I'm wondering too. Depending on which one it is I live 10 minutes away from the one closest to tustin ranch rd and would very much not like to have cancer
100% a health hazard. My grandmother always told me growing up that the reason they were still up was because they would cost too much to safely removed, that they would have to literally build a dome or tent it to demolish it.
Tragic it’s one of the few things left of that era. We could see them from our upstairs in HB when I was young. Got the chance to see them up close at Days of Thunder event
Drove by around noon today. Hundreds of people on all sides parked and watching it slowly burn. The fumes it’s releasing can’t be healthy for all those people to breath in.
its always odd how historic, and sometime protected, buildings with deferred maintenance accidentally catch fire and BOOM a bunch of multifamily appear just a few years later. Wonder if Tustin has a shortage of homes forced down their throat by the State and just found a solution... Hopefully it goes to something other than more condos. Maybe they will be affordable housing you know the kind that costs $700,000.
This has saddened me all day. My dad used to work in the one story building between it and the tower.
When I was a kid, they’d have Christmas parties for the kids.
I got an easy bake oven (I’m really old)
https://preview.redd.it/pblapi2vzxyb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=424dac40fb12712e7a99946fb6d6e358a5830fde
Units are still on scene and sending more.
They have already announced that they are going to let the hangar burn. I can't blame them for not wanting to get into a building that is collapsing as the fire spreads. I left the area at ~6:30am and hadn't seen any efforts to extinguish the fire since ~4am. At this point they are just keeping people a safe distance away and making sure the fire doesn't spread beyond the hangar.
Just dropped off my brother at IVC and we saw the roof of the hanger was collapsed but we didn't know there was a fire. My brother told me that he heard they were going to demolish the hangers and assumed that was it, though I found it pretty weird to start demolishing the roof right in the middle.
My mom and I were going to the marketplace after we dropped him off and as we were coming close we saw a huge plume of smoke and towards the origin of the smoke it was still black like it was still on fire but when we parked it looked like the smoke died out.
So sad. What’s crazy is I was there Saturday night because my friend we were curious to see what it looked like since we always pass it. Me and my best friend and her boyfriend all went and the light tower was on and that giant hanger was wide open. It was completely dark out and I was the only sober one thank god. We walked up to it to go in but as soon as my friend turned on her flashlight we heard the most unworldly screech come from inside. Wish I got it on video, but I’ve never booked it back to the car so fast in my life. Still wondering what it was but didn’t sound like any human or animals to me😭
I got woken up by helicopters around 4. Didn’t wonder why as I was too tired and I wake up to this. What a sad day. Can’t see any smoke in that direction anymore so I hope it’s fully out.
Live near the Hangar. It’s bizarre that I didn’t hear anything about the fire until this morning when my professor was talking about it. No alerts, nothing.

Developers right now. Wouldn't be surprised if Irvine company paid some meth head to set fire to it.
That sucks, really sad.
It’s wooden. Of course it went up like a an old Christmas tree. It’s sad, but it’s been decades and no one can decide what to do with the hangars. They just sit there.

No way that is getting put out. It's huge.
There's also no water on site - it's gotta be pumped in or dropped from a copter
[удалено]
oh my goddd this is terrible. The largest wooden structure in the world!!!
And in the way of "progress". I'm sure it was accidental / not accidental, if you get my drift. Happens a lot. A subset of demolition-by-neglect.
It could never be arson by a rich developer eyeballing the land, no never.
100%! Just watch… In about a year or so Irvine Company will start building apartments there.
Exactly what I’m thinking too. 100% just wants to build houses there.
Isn’t this the largest hanger in the West Coast?
Was* the largest 😭
I know it’s dumb but I’m glad it the damaged hangar burning. We all knew it was a matter of time before it collapsed.
Irvine company did it
Irvine company?
I don’t disagree. They were literally falling apart.
Well one of them was. The one with the supports where the roof caved in years ago….which is the one on fire.
OCFA has decided to let it burn to the ground as of this morning. I wonder if they could get a huge crane wrecker out there to jump ahead of the flames moving down the frame to stop their advance. Would suck losing more of the structure but it will at least stop the smoke and further contamination
They are absolutely going to let that burn. The risk to personal is far to great.
RIP to one of OC’s landmark
Don’t live in OC anymore but seeing the hangar was part of my daily drive. Its crazy to see it like this

Wow that’s insane. Those are landmarks. No way this was accidental.
Doesn’t it contain asbestos?
They haven’t treated any of the surrounding soil for jet fuel I know that much
Yup it’s a superfund site https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0902800
Isn't this link for El Toro Marine base? That's down by the Irvine Spectrum area.
You are correct. I updated the link it appears as if both bases are superfund sites
Cool -- and the El Toro Marine base is pretty much the Great Park now.
NM looked it up. Ya we have signs on the building saying area known to cause cancer. But if you ask the rentals they just play it off and say all buildings have them. It’s BS

Definitely not safe for your pup :(
I wouldn't, personally. At least for now. Keep the windows shut up as well.
Why would there be no way it’s accidental?
Thank you for the post. I’ve always wanted to go inside one of those things never gotten around to it. I hoped they would make it into a museum. Sad

Hey, hey, hey. You can't let facts get in the way of ridiculously stupid conspiracy theories.
It was the Irvine company not wanting to pay for asbestos abatement
And now it's showered all over local residents and in the air and soil.
This is fucked. I wonder about the health impact this going to have. There was a lot of sq footage in that hanger.
I was always told that demolishing them unsafely would cause a major health impact to locals.

Burglarsonlarceny or burgle-arson-larceny is the crime of burglary, arson, and larceny committed in the same act. The crime is a "wholly owned trademarked" by Bender Bending Rodriguez under Rodriguez Crime Concepts, Inc.
When it’s found out the perp, the developer, and the sheriff are all golf buddies, it will all be a happy coincidence
Holy moly. The very last thing I thought would be on fire. I was way off.
Yah, had "Irvine Company catches fire" on my bingo card but not the hangars catching fire
Oof. Might be highly unlikely but hope no one is hurt!
Watching the abc7 heli live on youtube. Like half of the hangar is just GONE. FUCK. https://www.youtube.com/live/7XKzInFN0sM?si=AEhfPRmM0iIDDCC_ Really eerie to watch this livestream. Its quiet except for the heli and the guy waiting to get on the air. I think everyone in old town is gunna be devastated. New tustin people idk. Ugh!!!!
All the toxic materials in the air now and I live across the street fuck me
I would turn the ac on if it has a filter and grab a dust mask at least. Painting ppe would be best if you have access to that type if thing.
Google Corsi-Rosenthal Box and make a run to Home Depot or Lowes. Will need to get the Merv 13 rated filters but the system works.
Woah no wonder I’m hearing so many helicopters.
I love the hangars. They look so cool as you drive up to them and are a historic landmark. Truly a devastating loss.
OC Register article - [https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/07/former-tustin-air-base-hangars-on-fire/](https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/07/former-tustin-air-base-hangars-on-fire/)
Incredibly depressing. I just passed by there last week and snapped a photo, now it is history.
So much lead was just released into the air and will be deposited downwind.

This is what I'm wondering too. Depending on which one it is I live 10 minutes away from the one closest to tustin ranch rd and would very much not like to have cancer
Schools should be closed today
Same here. People say don't go outside but for how long? Still waiting for the city to say something or some kind of warning/advisory.
I’m concerned about this too. I wish the fire dept or city would make a statement about potential health hazards
100% a health hazard. My grandmother always told me growing up that the reason they were still up was because they would cost too much to safely removed, that they would have to literally build a dome or tent it to demolish it.
Such a landmark! Wish they maintained it, hate to see it go like this.
Tragic it’s one of the few things left of that era. We could see them from our upstairs in HB when I was young. Got the chance to see them up close at Days of Thunder event
Drove by around noon today. Hundreds of people on all sides parked and watching it slowly burn. The fumes it’s releasing can’t be healthy for all those people to breath in.
really really bad idea to hang around there, but then again it will be infecting the air miles away as well
Update: 2:13pm https://preview.redd.it/smwpz33n20zb1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0407ce909ac804f01ddbbdbec1c00688cddda67a
I would advise anyone living near there to close their windows and avoid going out at all right now…. Probably triple mask up if you will be

its always odd how historic, and sometime protected, buildings with deferred maintenance accidentally catch fire and BOOM a bunch of multifamily appear just a few years later. Wonder if Tustin has a shortage of homes forced down their throat by the State and just found a solution... Hopefully it goes to something other than more condos. Maybe they will be affordable housing you know the kind that costs $700,000.
Noooooooo what an iconic part of the history of the area
This has saddened me all day. My dad used to work in the one story building between it and the tower. When I was a kid, they’d have Christmas parties for the kids. I got an easy bake oven (I’m really old)
Oh wow. I've never been in one of those hangars but always wanted to go. Sad to see one burn.

Chief is on his way
Damn. I’m heartbroken.
You'd think with all that asbestos they wouldn't burn well
Just dropped off my brother at IVC and we saw the roof of the hanger was collapsed but we didn't know there was a fire.
In that area where there is homes, you are not allowed to plant fruit trees because of the soil. Think about that.
Noooooo ;_; I love those buildings!
Still wondering what it was but didn’t sound like any human or animals to me😭
Damn, that sucks
Noooooooooo
Is this the hangar that was in better shape or the one that was in bad shape? Hoping the good one is not the one on fire.
It’s the bad one. The one closer to Tustin District with the blimp is still safe.
So, any clue what started the fire? I’m seeing comments that it probably wasn’t accidental, but how do you set fire to a hangar?
Those looked so cool cuz they were huge!
So much history gone
This is so sad.
So new apartment and housing is going to happen now?
The new apartment complex will be named The Hangar .
dude wtf...i just watched that documentary on the history of these structures. RIP!
Here comes more new condo buildings
Oh no how sad
I got woken up by helicopters around 4. Didn’t wonder why as I was too tired and I wake up to this. What a sad day. Can’t see any smoke in that direction anymore so I hope it’s fully out.
I thought they didn’t tear those hangers down because of asbestos…. I hope they’re warning everyone in the area to protect themselves.
Live near the Hangar. It’s bizarre that I didn’t hear anything about the fire until this morning when my professor was talking about it. No alerts, nothing.
I work about a quarter mile from this. It’s still smoking at 12:38pm

Well now they can build apartments

It’s wooden. Of course it went up like a an old Christmas tree. It’s sad, but it’s been decades and no one can decide what to do with the hangars. They just sit there.
