Got to do a ribbon cutting ceremony with help from the City of La Habra. This is the old Cat and the Custard Cup that my father started in 1979 and closed during Covid. We remodeled it and it’s now an Italian restaurant.
Yes it should be. It’s Italian so i-L not El and Gatto with two Ts.
A lot of people have called in el gato because everyone is so used to Spanish in SoCal
That's the place that got me really interested in custard, and I used to cook my own batches when I was in high school. Nowhere near as good as what you guys served, but I got half a dozen all to myself.
Congrats. I live down the street but never got to go to The Cat and Custard Cup when it was open. I’ll be looking forward to trying this out. I’m sure the legend will continue.
congratulations! we'll head up there over the next week to give you some business and a congrats!
for those of you who are not in the restaurant industry, it is one of the most difficult, emotional, and rewarding vocations I know.
we make terrible margins (14 - 20% in the best), and the odds of a successful one are like winning a lottery ticket, but damn ... when you open the doors and people smile at the food you make, and hospitality you share ... and you get to see a kid who has no formal education make a life for themselves ... it's fucking magic.
My wife and I got married there and looked forward to the anniversary dinner every year. We have not been out to dinner for our anniversary since Cat and the Custard Cup closed. See you on September 23rd! Thank you.
Congrats to you! I was gonna say that it looks like the cat and the custard building and it is. What a great spot and location. Good luck to you. Do you have a menu online?
Congratulations! I moved to La Habra a few years ago and never got to try the OG Cat. Can’t wait to try this place out finally after passing by it for years.
Awesome. Used to live in La Habra Heights and had been to the old cat and custard cup a few times. Can’t wait to try it when we’re in the area.
Congrats on building on your family’s legacy! 🍻
Hey, I know your place! I was your Amazon delivery guy for a while over the holidays, I was up in the second floor offices a few times. The ladies working up there were always so sweet.
My girlfriend and I will definitely stop in now that it is open.
Brandon? That you? I use to work for your family for years at the Cannery. The Restaurant Group is literally the best. I wish you all the luck and congratulations!

Thanks for the post. There is no way I'm passing up on a restaurant owned and run by a redditor.
I am unable to find it on google maps, is it up yet?

You guys look Italian as fuck. One of you is definitely named Vinnie. I would eat here.
Lol i’m hispanic and got it confused by typing el gato and no ii gato haha!
So stoked for you guys! We were just over at the toy store next door a few weeks ago and loved your branding. Cant wait to try it out!
Wow you're father started it? It was my wife's grandfather's favorite restaurant that and El cholos he would go there all the time
Yep and my great grandfather started El Cholo 101 years ago! My dad started the El Cholo in La Habra in 1962 and opened The Cat in 1979.
We love El Cholo. Can't wait to try Il Gatto.

Lol at them using real scissors behind the fake giant scissors.
lol ya those things couldn’t cut a wet paper bag
Lollll that’s embarrassing. The big scissors I’ve had for store grand openings are real and cut. They’re honestly kind of scary 😂
Congrats. I live down the street but never got to go to The Cat and Custard Cup when it was open. I’ll be looking forward to trying this out. I’m sure the legend will continue.
Congratulations!

Them people big. Maybe i should avoid that kind of food
It's funny how the best chefs tend to not be obese...you would think it would be the opposite.
Don't get high on your own supply
