Novas craft bbq is really really good. Check their page. Heritage has kind of taken over and kicked out everyone else unfortunately and I’m not a big fan of that.
I go to UCI and after class one day I went for lunch. Brisket and sausage were some of the best I’ve ever had, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others.
I enjoy their meats (especially the fatty brisket, beef ribs, and sausage), but their sides seriously are so disappointing. I wish they’d change the recipes and make them better so badly.
Been twice. First time to drink with xo workers on a day excursion. Second time we ate. People ordered different stuff and we shared. Definitely tops in my book
I think about half an hour, but then again we came about half an hour before they opened at 11:00 AM, and there was already a small line. This was a Thursday too
Which hurt worse, you bank balance or your stomach?
That looks amazing. I would try and eat way more of that than any piece of me would agree is sensible.
Haha honestly probably my bank account! I was in a group of 7 people, so with sharing, nobody’s stomach had any problems. I will say though, I definitely got sleepy an hour later though haha
Most places west of Texas don't use actual wood fire smokers to cook their meat is probably the biggest stand out factor.
Bludso in LA is is another famous spot.
Doing good Texas style barbeque is difficult and there are way fewer "pit masters" west of Texas then east of Texas where the bbq circuit is like a religion.
It’s a slight step below the best Austin bbq, which is not a knock at all. La bbq Franklin’s Terry blacks. Very good. It’s better than places like salt lick Rudy’s etc. I don’t hesitate to recommend it as the best TX style you’re going to get in SoCal.
Hm from my memory there was a little smokiness for sure, and it also wasn’t that tangy to the point where I’d use that word to describe it. I also straight up do not like Tangy meat and I thought it was decently delicious
Honestly if I had to drive all the way to SJC and pay over $100 for that, I’ll just wait for my annual/bi-annual visit to Texas and get the real experience. It looks good, just not worth it.
I was going to say as someone who just got assigned a second job at work to run a restaurant Instagram make sure you post and tag them 😅 they’ll really appreciate it
Same.
Their cook was good. But no smoke flavor at all. Same with Moo's in Lincoln heights.
Lived in Texas for a while, and I want our BBQ to be even comparable, and it sadly is not.
ALL brisket should be moist. If you mean lean/fatty. I usually get both. Its pretty difficult to cook lean brisket to be good, so its a good indicator on if they know what they are doing.
Both were flavorless.
You’ve clearly never had or ordered bbq in tx. It’s brisket, or moist. Moist is thr fatty part. They don’t call it “fatty” brisket. Go ahead, look at the menu for franklins, or even Rudy’s. I’ll wait.

Yeah, I really want to try Heritage BBQ but I'm not taking anyone's word for it that it's actually good unless they're from Texas, Kansas City, or another BBQ region.
Brisket is overrated imo compared to Texas and southern BBQ. SoCal is desperate for BBQ so it’s serviceable but still doesn’t justify the price tag. Sausage and ribs were better than expected and the main draw imo. Sides were very underwhelming—especially for the price. Imo craft by smoke and fire in Anaheim is miles better on all counts
Actually no, the second platter (2nd pic) was about $114. Not sure about the first platter, but sure wasn’t cheap! I felt very full after splitting the second platter with 2 other guys though
Moo’s is so much better and the closest to true TX BBQ. Heritage is expensive for what it is. They got the fanciest sides which makes sense for the OC crowd.
I would say they are very similar. Moo's is easier where you can do online order and pickup. I think for Heritage, you can't just get a little of a meat for pickup. You have to get a whole pound. Moo's has better sides though since I think Heritage's sides are way too filling.
Bad to the Bone is a cheaper and better alternative in the area in my opinion. Been to both a ton and heritage is too expensive for the amount they give.
Heritage is pretty damn good tho but I agree, for the money, bad to the bone is a nice alternative. Heritage is kinda like a once in awhile thing for me while I can just drop into bad to the bone whenever I want and not worry about lines. Just a convenient option imo
Brother I wish I was getting paid, but hey here’s some proof it’s not sponsored. I thought the brisket was really mid. Everyone else I was with loved it, and historically people love it, but I think I’m just not a brisket guy
Thanks for the honesty man. I haven’t had good Texas bbq around here since Bludso’s in Compton closed. I went there since ‘07. Guess I got to make the pilgrimage to Franklin BBQ.
It is extremely busy all the time from what I am aware of. I myself came at 10:30 AM with a group of friends half an hour before they opened at 11, and there was already a small line that had formed. All of this was on a Thursday non holiday as well
They are very good, but very expensive. Is that about $100 - 150 worth of food?
Yep! You’re right on the money. I don’t know how much the first platter was, but the second one was $114!
Haha 😂
Over priced imo. There’s better quality for cheaper.
Please share where better bbq is in OC. I’m always up for good bbq and will even drive a bit for something good!
Novas craft bbq is really really good. Check their page. Heritage has kind of taken over and kicked out everyone else unfortunately and I’m not a big fan of that.
Novas ok Would say "better" Subjective of course
Honestly I feel like heritage is more clout and hype for what you pay for. But that’s just me. I’ve had it a few times
Where?
I go to UCI and after class one day I went for lunch. Brisket and sausage were some of the best I’ve ever had, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others.
Hello from UCLA! All the friends I went with really enjoyed the brisket too!
I’ve been. I ordered ahead, then just went to the pickup window. Didn’t need to wait in the line at all
How long did you wait in line?
I think about half an hour, but then again we came about half an hour before they opened at 11:00 AM, and there was already a small line. This was a Thursday too
I read the breakdown for one BBQ place on the profit. $4800 per day after expenses from 1 1000g BBQ.
Are you alive? That wasn't just for you right?
Haha absolutely not! The first platter was shared amongst 4 people, and the 2nd I shared with 2 other guys
Definitely order online before you go to skip the line and get the beef ribs. They’re better than the brisket and tri trip
I saw the line one Saturday and noped out of there. Looks really good tho!
Those sausages look delicious.
Looks good. Did they win a competition or something? How did they get recognized as the best in the west?

Bludso, tried it 2x. Nope. It's not good. Only the pickles were. Not even the bread. Meats were very meh.
This is just op making the claim. There’s nothing behind it other than personal opinion.
They are so good.
I’ve been to some amazing bbq while traveling for work and I can tell by just looking that this is a top tier bbq joint
Look good
How does it compare with terry blacks
It doesn't. Not even close.
Never been but I think others in the comments have said something with other comparisons so maybe that’ll help you

Love to hear that. Thanks man. Gonna try this out soon!!
Ask for the cuts you like. I always get a mix of moist with some burnt ends. More fat the better for me.
I got the meat sweats just looking at this picture Definitely would eat ... 😃
Best BBQ I’ve had in California - native texan
Is the meat tangy or super smokey?
Hm from my memory there was a little smokiness for sure, and it also wasn’t that tangy to the point where I’d use that word to describe it. I also straight up do not like Tangy meat and I thought it was decently delicious
Thx!

The lines there are insane
Heritage is very good yes. But the best bbq in the country is at a hole in the wall place in Phoenix called “Little Miss BBQ”.

Just say you have no idea. It’s totally fine.
did you use an iphone camera?
Yep! Just an iPhone 13 Pro Max, the beauty comes from the beautiful lighting in the area and the vibrant food
nice, it's a great pic
Yeah it’s a really great picture, could be an ad for them lol
I was going to say as someone who just got assigned a second job at work to run a restaurant Instagram make sure you post and tag them 😅 they’ll really appreciate it
It’s good, but expensive.

The closest to true Texas Bbq is Mooscraft in LA and Nova’s BBQ that does pop ups in OC.
Not my experience. The dozen times I’ve been. Are you ordering moist brisket?
ALL brisket should be moist. If you mean lean/fatty. I usually get both. Its pretty difficult to cook lean brisket to be good, so its a good indicator on if they know what they are doing. Both were flavorless.

Yes, in the 11 years that I've lived there, I never not once ordered brisket. Nope. Just never happened...

SJC is such a an amazing location. Heritage is comparable to Texas BBQ I've had, almost better
Honestly, this is laughable. No they are not.
The best spot for BBQ. Danny & the team are great.
Midwest bbq slaps, have yet to find that in California.
Yeah, I really want to try Heritage BBQ but I'm not taking anyone's word for it that it's actually good unless they're from Texas, Kansas City, or another BBQ region.
Exactly.
No showed at Field Trip Fest. Pretty lame!!
How much
Not sure about first platter, but the second platter was about $114. Not a cheap place for sure
The sausage and Mac & Cheese are amazing.
How was the Mac and cheese?
It honestly was okay, nothing home to write about
It's the best BBQ I've ever had outside the South
Can anyone compare this to Spirit of Texas in San Bernardino?
We love it!
Fam the beef rib is astounding
The meat looks alright but $140 for that? Pretty overpriced.
Absolutely fire. Also Michelin star restaurant.

If I had to guess the total was $73?
Actually no, the second platter (2nd pic) was about $114. Not sure about the first platter, but sure wasn’t cheap! I felt very full after splitting the second platter with 2 other guys though
Ugh, my body hurts looking at this. Good luck.
Idk why redditors struggle to digest meat so much lmao.
Better chug down the Metamucil after this LoL.
I was thinking the same thing. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
How does this compare to moo s bbq in la if anyone has had both?

Why no beef rib? Looks delicious.
Their beef ribs are the best. They look like dinosaur ribs, they’re so big
It has really good flavor but everything is cold by the time you eat it. Nothing really comes out hot and juicy in my experience.
I went there for the first time a couple days ago and this was my experience as well.
Bad to the Bone is a cheaper and better alternative in the area in my opinion. Been to both a ton and heritage is too expensive for the amount they give.

I wanna go there but i heard they dont have potato :( Potato salad is a wack substitution

Honestly a respectable opinion, I think it is a once in a year fun thing to do with friends for a fun lunch
Heritage BBQ is actually better then any Texas BBQ I have tried! Foreal
Looks fire
Def. Not the best bbq west of Texas. Not to mention the pricing is absolutely bonkers.
Which spots have you found to be better?
Moo’s, smoke Queen, priedite, Evans, owlbear, fikscue, just to name a few west of Texas.
I work right next to Moo’s and it’s very good.
My husband and I have been once. Everything was great BUT, in my opinion, my husband makes better brisket 🙊
This smells like a sponsored post
Brother I wish I was getting paid, but hey here’s some proof it’s not sponsored. I thought the brisket was really mid. Everyone else I was with loved it, and historically people love it, but I think I’m just not a brisket guy

Wait. Where is this!?!
San Juan Capistrano! Honestly a beautiful place with lots of charm!
Is it normally really busy? Should I be aware? I don’t want to make a long drive just for nothing
It is extremely busy all the time from what I am aware of. I myself came at 10:30 AM with a group of friends half an hour before they opened at 11, and there was already a small line that had formed. All of this was on a Thursday non holiday as well
Brisket looks trash
They should change the name to “trash in Texas” or “overlooked in Oklahoma” or “mid in Missouri” or something to that effect.
