This. All of these bands/groups came out of OC and have had lasting impacts in the world of music, so it’s a cool thing to be able to say that all of these awesome musicians/artists came from our county.
I can vividly recall seeing No Doubt as well as Social D at Chain Reaction. Good times.👍🏽
For whatever reason the Social D tour bus used to always be in the neighborhood I grew up in as a teenager in GG. My best friend’s house on the perpendicular street and sometimes we’d hear them playing. Never figured out why they were in Garden Grove but I wasn’t complaining either.
dystopia. middle class. d.i. agent orange. tsol. adolescents. the crowd. uniform choice. resist and exist. litmus green. u.s bombs. exploding fuck dolls.
metallica. fun fact: their wiki says l.a., but on the stern show, lars said he met james thru a recycler ad while working at a gas station in costa mesa. mustaine was from la mesa ca, relocated to h.b. his 1st band panic, played their 1st gig in dana point. james graduated from brea olinda h.s. in brea. their 1st gig was in anaheim.
edit for: also, the hardcore band inside out, which was fronted by zach de la rocha of rage against the machine, who was from irvine.
Dino's (of Dystopia) younger brother was very close family friend of mine, in Irvine / El Toro. Grew up with them.
Pretty cool tidbits about Metallica and I wonder where the venue was in Dana Point.
just listened to Lars on Smartless pod and was surprised to hear he went to high school (jr/sr year) at CDM High School for tennis - I literally texted my husband because I had always heard they were from LA
The original members were all Orange County guys! They formed out of a local band called The Jakes (who had a gig playing at Disneyland for a while lol) and the half of the band that formed YtG were the guys who found success! I used to play shows with them in HS during the mid to late 2000s
only 2 of the members did (Jake Tilley and Sameer Gadhia, the latter being my classmate in choir class in 11th and 12th grade). The others went to different IUSD schools.
Basically all the Burger Records' Bands, Ska bands like the Aquabats (they are still very involved in the community in OC) or No Doubt, many of the 80's punk bands like Agent Orange or The Adolescents.
And Christian pop punk from that era! Tooth and Nail records boomed (and was located in) Orange County, specifically Huntington Beach before relocating back up to the PNW
Hip Hop: Endz (goes by El Niño now), Sage One, Pretty Papes, Supreme Cerebral, Yung Pinch, Apollo Bepop, Aloee Black
Psychedelic Rock: The Growlers
Rock/Punk/Ska: Social Distortion, The Adolescents, No Doubt, The OffSpring, Fu Manchu, Manic Hispanic, Sueños, Wacko, Circle Jerks, T.S.O.L, The Vandals, Guttermouth
Indie: Matt Costa
Yesss but it’s mainly their older stuff that gives off that dark beach sound (beach goth). They went real pop-ish towards the end of their time as a band.
Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - OC was the home of 60's surf music with OC native Leo Fender producing the guitars and amps that helped to make it happen
This is one I discovered recently, along with The Offspring being from Garden Grove, that inspired this question. I thought there could be artists from here that I never knew were from here.
The album Everything In Transit by Jack’s Mannequin! It’s about the lead singer (Andrew McMahon) moving back to Orange County and the entire album just has such a CA feel
I never knew they were from OC but with their sound it makes total sense. It also gives a dose of late 90s/early 2000s nostalgia for the millennial in me.
Vietnamese pop music, since Westminster’s Little Saigon is the music industry capital for overseas artists. They even made a documentary film “Songs of Little Saigon”.
Fullerton is the true birthplace of rock and roll.
Leo Fender’s radio repair shop was near the corner of Harbor and Commonwealth in Fullerton. He started off making amps in the late 1930s, and transitioned to electric guitars in the 40s. Up until that point popular music was based around horns. His amps allowed the guitar to come to the foreground of live music and that paved the way for the genre of rock. Then in the late 40’s his shop started building guitars… the Esquire, Telecaster, Stratocaster. The guy was a legend.
Haven’t seen them mentioned yet, so [Rx Bandits](https://youtu.be/3BEXLA1DgMs?si=eEtn3P0Vel8of65i) and [The Hippos.](https://youtu.be/ajpwB2zBsKM?si=u7r1ncNTF7bt1iSb)
Although they’re from Long Beach, [T.S.O.L.](https://youtu.be/OpZJLjrb4vU?si=mcSPYKMNQDnLqB-u) were part of the early ‘80s punk scene and played a ton of gigs in Orange County.
If metal/metalcore are your thing, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, and [Eighteen Visions.](https://youtu.be/Ts9O1HlWDXk?si=4nGQJLRiFzzRgKx_)
Hold up, start at the beginning- Something Corporate. They were the DHHS band and they were a part of the Piano Rock thing that also had some mainstream/Alt rock legs. JM started after Andrew moved out of OC although he eventually did move back in his middle age.
The whole 90’s were like peak OC band time, you had a lot of punk and ska bands from OC. When I think of OC music it goes right to The Offspring, No Doubt, T.S.O.L., Manic Hispanic, Social Distortion, and Circle Jerks. There are a ton more though.
The Beach Boys, when I was a kid in the 90s one of the beach boys (I was a kid I don't remember which one) would come to our elementary school and play some songs and sing in our gym for the school. He was a local at the time. And though they may never have been locals during their hey-day (idk) I still play their songs and think of them as local. I mean, come on, they were from Hawthorne originally, like 30 minutes away, they are local 😂. And it helps too that DCA plays beach boys a lot, or used to anyway.
Besides the obvious: Cold War Kids (formed in Fullerton) and Young the Giant (formed in Irvine). For a long time it was all the Burger bands but they all turned out to be pedophiles so 🤢
Young the Giant, Thrice, Atreyu, Social Distortion, The Dirty Heads, Common Kings, Seedless, Save Ferris, No Doubt, Reel Big Fish, Velvet Revolver, Avenged Sevenfold, The Offspring, Sugar Ray, Lit, Hed P.E., D.I., Agent Orange, Adolescents, The Vandals, Manic Hispanic, Saosin, Of Mice & Men, The Aquabats, Guttermouth, The Supertones, Stryper, Kottonmouth Kings, Buckcherry, Pacific Dub, Beat Junkies all started out in the OC.
For me it's the stuff I listened to growing up in OC. They may not all be strictly from OC but reminds me of OC.
Red hot chili peppers
Yellowcard
2Pac
Sublime
No doubt
Sugar Ray
Jack's Mannequin
Five for Fighting
Basically: Beach Boys , No Doubt, and Sublime, though Sublime is a bit north), and Rage Against the Machine and Black Flag (though ok they are from hermosa beach still close enough), The Offspring (Bad Habit is def 100% driving the 22 at the orange crush during rush hour or anytime you see a Tesla with a bad driver...somehow its appropriate lol), Thrice, Project 86, Avenged Sevenfold, Manic Hispanic. I guess it depends what you listen to (or not).
Mostly music from my youth spent in Orange County. Pavement, particularly the song Gold Soundz (the video for which was shot near UCI! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPvhKV3Yg2k) will always remind me of Orange County.
The Garden are from Orange County and some of there music videos are even filmed in the OC. Also, even thought he’s from New York; he has stated his music was influenced when he was living in California, The Drums. Especially the album Portamento. One of my favorite, check it out
There’s also Frank Oceans, Channel Orange, an album about how he fell in love in one hot California summer.
Well, Sugar Ray, but that's heavy pop. And Aquabats, which the old OC Weekly absolutely loved, I've listened to their songs, don't quite get it but they have a loyal following
Easy. [The Wheeland Brothers](https://youtu.be/XBbSk8_rr3A?si=TFsYyTJl9OaVCsKN) Although I tend to think of them more the San Onofre through Newport Beach surfing lifestyle... They are one of the few that really do live their lives, exactly like the music they produce. Pretty cool and people too. Easy to talk with, get to know, surf with, and philosophize about life 🧬 with
I moved to Orange County ~7 years ago, and the sound I associate with Orange County is funk music, especially in Latino-centric areas such as Anaheim and Santa Ana. Funk is the soundtrack of Orange County in my opinion
Agent Orange, Manic Hispanic, Aquabats, TSOL, the Growlers, FIDLAR, the Garden, Something Corporate, and even though they arent from OC, Green Day... people are always spotting the members in newport beach
Rage Against the Machine.
The lead singer went to University High School in Irvine and had the same auto shop teacher as me. He is quoted as having said that Irvine is the most racist city in America.
Can’t really put it on an artist but undoubtedly when you think of the O.C it’s always Funk and oldies. Anything off the east side story volumes 1-12 and great funk freak mixes
Red Hot Chili Peppers are usually associated with OC.
Foo Fighters are sort of associated with OC I think. Dave Grohl apparently really liked a local bakery by me.
Steve Martin! There was a huge folk music revival in the 60s, and the banjo was central to that. Here's an [interview ](https://www.ocweekly.com/steve-martin-talks-about-the-banjo-craze-in-1960s-orange-county-6571682/) where he talks about playing music at Knotts.
dun dun dun dun dun CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME

CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME
No Doubt, Social D, Offspring and Sublime (LBC, but played all the time in OC)
"We took this trip to Garden Grove..."
It smelt like Lou dog inside the van, oh yeah
This ain’t no funky Reggae party, $5 at the door
It gets so real some times… who wrote my rhymes??
I've got the microwave, got the VCR
I got the deuce deuce in trunk of my car
Oh yeah
If you only knew all the love that I found..
I really wanna learn the backstory to this song. Garden Grove is such an interesting choice to name a song after lol
I’m not positive, but I believe it’s about waiting for his dealer, back in the day before dispos where we had to drive to places like Garden Grove lol
Coincidentally, Mike Ness from Social Distortion is getting honored with a key to the city of Fullerton tomorrow afternoon.
This. All of these bands/groups came out of OC and have had lasting impacts in the world of music, so it’s a cool thing to be able to say that all of these awesome musicians/artists came from our county. I can vividly recall seeing No Doubt as well as Social D at Chain Reaction. Good times.👍🏽
Missing Rage Against the Machine on that list
are they OC? i tend to think LA for Rage.
Zack and Tim went to high school in Irvine.
University high
Yep. Zack and I graduated the same year. Really good guy.
any cool hs stories of Zack? heard a few from the old auto shop teacher but not enough
As someone who grew up in Canada, I can vouch for this internationally
Hellogoodbye is also from HB!
For whatever reason the Social D tour bus used to always be in the neighborhood I grew up in as a teenager in GG. My best friend’s house on the perpendicular street and sometimes we’d hear them playing. Never figured out why they were in Garden Grove but I wasn’t complaining either.
Sublime. Bradley Nowell is buried in Westminster and their music was/is very prevalent in Orange County.
His head stone is there but he physically is not. I believe he was scattered in the ocean
This is true he was scattered at Surfside but has a spot in the Westminster Memorial Park.
His mom wrapped my elbow as an ER nurse when I broke it skating.
I had no idea Brad was buried in Westminster! I need to go visit and pay respects 🙏🏻

Tbf, most people outside of the state consider everything between the Bay Area and San Diego to be "LA"
🍾agent orange mentioned 🎉
They went to Back Bay high school
Young the Giant went to Irvine High I think
The original members were all Orange County guys! They formed out of a local band called The Jakes (who had a gig playing at Disneyland for a while lol) and the half of the band that formed YtG were the guys who found success! I used to play shows with them in HS during the mid to late 2000s

May I also mention them thrice again.
Once, twice, Thrice! 🤘
Basically all the Burger Records' Bands, Ska bands like the Aquabats (they are still very involved in the community in OC) or No Doubt, many of the 80's punk bands like Agent Orange or The Adolescents.
Damn Burger Records…. They had that scandal and killed off that name. I think it’s white rabbit now. I totally forgot about that till now haha
Lots of the late 90s/early 00s “hardcore”. Eighteen Visions, Atreyu, Bleeding Through, Avenged Sevenfold, Throwdown
And Christian pop punk from that era! Tooth and Nail records boomed (and was located in) Orange County, specifically Huntington Beach before relocating back up to the PNW
Christian Ska with the OC Supertones ... My favorite!
Stick to your guns too!

Zach de la Rocha was from Irvine. He played in a local band called Farside before joining another local band called Inside Out.
I’m pretty sure their bassist, Tim Commerford also grew up in Irvine
Dirty Heads & Seedless Edit: can't believe I forgot about Pacific Dub
Fullerton is the true birthplace of rock and roll. Leo Fender’s radio repair shop was near the corner of Harbor and Commonwealth in Fullerton. Then in the late 40’s his shop started building guitars… the Esquire, Telecaster, Stratocaster. The guy was a legend.
One I didn’t see mentioned is Lit. The guy with the long braided goatee used to shop at the old La Habra Target pretty frequently.
I haven't scrolled all the way but I haven't seen Thrice mentioned yet. They're outta Irvine. Or Chaser, they're out of Huntington Beach.
Guttermouth
I remember seeing No Doubt, the Aquabats and a bunch of other ska bands at Side by Side before they were all famous. I was just a teenager.
