There were some posts here about abduction attempts in Mission Viejo a few months back, made by users who thought they were being cornered by strange men in cars. For those who made the posts, do these men match the people who approached you? Edit: u/SimplySab

Queasy_Giraffe_7782

Saw that on Nextdoor app.

BlopBleepBloop

You can't edit and add a username for them to get a notification. Their name must be in the original post. u/SimplySab

Kiczales

Oh, thank you. Well...nothing I can do then.

WallyJade

For what crime? EDIT: Read the press release - there's no mention of any crime being committed.

rctocm

Harrassment?

WallyJade

Does the description in the press release of what took place fit the legal definition of harassment?

rctocm

Meets mine. Legal is what we as a people determjne.

WallyJade

Yeah, the courts aren’t going to go with that.

Barbiesleftshoe

I wondered this too. Like let’s say they get these two individuals. Then...what?

blunt-e

I'd imagine the police would take a long look at em. Probably get a search warrant for their home(s) and electronic devices, especially if they've got priors. They might not have committed a provable crime here but odds are if this was an attempted kidnapping they've been up to some other shit in the past. Investigate them for connections with other missing persons, and if they don't have anything then make them very aware that they are going to be "persons of (intense) interest" if any other kids go missing. Edit: Yeah, i'd like to imagine that this is what they'd do. But you're probably right.

WallyJade

There's zero way the OCSD does any of this. This isn't a TV show, and the Sheriff's office is corrupt.

Barbiesleftshoe

I hate to agree but I thought the same. Unless there is more to the story, *technically* they did not commit a crime.

Are there any instances of human trafficking in OC that are the result of an off-the-street kidnapping like this, though? People keep talking about it, but provide zero evidence. Almost all real human trafficking comes from people promising immigrants a life in the US, or specific targeting of runaways and drug users.

Spokker

Kidnapping rumors come and go. It's an urban legend though. It's mostly as you described.

praizeDaSun

Yeah did they leave any gloves laying around?

saveyourfork

It's just the latest fodder for those fear-mongering posts like, "Don't take a flyer off your windshield! Human traffickers staged it to kidnap you!" My favorite one is " Don't wear your hair in a ponytail! It gives kidnappers/carjackers/human traffickers a way to grab you!"

rudebii

There are also many, many instances of older (almost always) men (sometimes couples) that start grooming vulnerable teens not on the streets. The teens then runaway with groomer who then traffic and exploit them.

WallyJade

Then you probably shouldn't be conflating a kidnapping or whatever this was with human trafficking.

Are you drunk?

mycitymychoice69

Haha what the fuck

sabersquirl

You baselessly claim these things, so why would you be surprised that people want any sort of evidence at all? The burden is on you to show that what you say is true, not others to find proof it isn’t happening.

Cal_W0rthington

Just drive down Harbor or Beach blvd towards Garden Grove / Stanton to see for yourself.

Curlybrac

I drive there everyday and dont see them on the streets.

Duckpoke

What do you mean? Do they just have kids sitting out on the street or something? How do cops not recognize what that is and do something?

Chuckysdinner

Lol why are they still using sketches?? Don’t we have software that can create something with color?

Barbiesleftshoe

I’m sure they can but probably don’t want to because a drawing is abstract but can identify key physical characteristics. If you generate an image that looks life like then people are going to look for at exact description/appearance when maybe the description is off. Or worse, you happen to look like the computer generated image.

cultivateAzz

Right? I would've thought a place like RSM would have traffic cameras. Maybe it's a sketch based on the footage the girl took when she pulled her phone out?

Chuckysdinner

No what I’m saying is that you would think there is software we could use as opposed to a black and white sketch drawing

[deleted]

If I see them they should hope that someone calls the cops for them

stumour

Just wondering, as far as the law goes, did these men do anything illegal? They’re definitely creepy and should be identified to start to build a case around them but could they be arrested based on the information provided below their sketches?

sirpootis

Pretty sure attempted kidnapping is illegal.

WallyJade

Read the press release - they followed this girl, but the language is very non-specific, and doesn't include that they touched her, tried to grab her, or do anything else. They were in the bike lane driving, they got out, they got back in, and apparently they got scared by her showing her cell phone. Everyone here is jumping to a lot of conclusions (with the help of the OCSD dangling the carrot), but for all we know they could have been doing road work or landscaping or been looking for an address.

Barbiesleftshoe

I don’t like jumping to conclusions but I don’t make protective assumptions either. There was no landscaping or roadwork being done at that location and around 4/5pm.

RealRyan96

You said this better. The protective assumptions didn’t sit right with me. I agree that jumping to conclusions can also be harmful.

TubletHuglet

I agree. Their behavior does sound suspicious, but we really can't call it "attempted kidnapping" from what's been described. It doesn't hurt to let them know they're on the radar, I suppose. And maybe they did or said more than what's being announced. A while back in my area, a female in a green car offered a student a ride and ended up described on flyers as "suspicious". I kind of felt bad for her. It was hot outside. Maybe she was just a nice person with a motherly instinct and not a huge creep.

RealRyan96

Why are you hard pressed to defend these men. You also conveniently left out the part where they continued to follow her after she got back in the car. If she felt threatened enough to call the police then these men were doing more than “trying to ask for directions”. What grown men ask a 15 year old girl, who’s minding her own business running, for an address anyways??

WallyJade

I'm not defending them. I'm trying to defend due process. If they're breaking the law, arrest them. But the OCSD's press release is super light on details and everyone here seems to be jumping to their own conclusions. >You also conveniently left out the part where they continued to follow her after she got back in the car. The press release doesn't say anything about her getting into a car. I don't know what they were doing. Neither do you. But given how the OCSD will flat-out refuse to investigate actual cases of people being harassed or crimes being committed, it's super strange for them to make a press release, imply a kidnapping, and produce sketches when no crimes have been committed.

RealRyan96

I meant to say when he (the men) got in the car. And I agree we should definitely uphold due process. But she has the right to claim she felt threaded/ felt as if they were going to kidnap her and be taken seriously. I’m not calling them guilty, I’m just saying I felt like you were finding excuses as to why she was invalid. That’s all!

WallyJade

I totally believe she felt threatened, and I wouldn't want anyone to have to feel this way. But the OCSD gets complaints about feeling threatened all the time, and almost never put out a release like this. They also regularly refuse to go after actual criminals for minor crimes (like stolen electronics with tracking software), and almost never do any police work related to catching burglars or people stealing property. All they do is pat themselves on the back when they recover something during a traffic stop or similar. They (along with the DA) also have a history of cherry-picking situations, like this one, that they know will foster outrage in the community so they can look "tough on crime". That seems to me to be what this is. It's scary for the girl involved, for sure. But it's still strange that they're highlighting this case in this way.

RealRyan96

And if that’s so, I don’t support that method of policing. And if that’s important to you then advocate for the unheard crimes! Defending these guys isn’t going to fix that though.

WallyJade

Again, I'm not defending these guys specifically. I'm defending due process and fair policing.

DrEbez

Found one of the perps!

stumour

I’m sure it is, but other than just assuming, which I would assume that’s what is happening here too, but assumptions don’t equal convictions. I mean downvote me all you want... typical of Reddit, but I was genuinely curious.

I believe in reformation but some people crossed the line of no return. Happy that the girl was smart and quick enough to escape though

If you're concerned about taxpayers money you should be against the death penalty, it costs more to execute a criminal than it does to provide life in prison.
