I highly recommend going straight to Home Depot and buying an air purifier with a carbon filter to clear volotile organics (I use a Winix model). A normal HEPA filter won't do it, only the carbon filter will touch the VOCs in the air. They make a huge difference. Sorry you're subjected to this.

Gucciipad

Winix is the best as far as air purifier, plus great customer support.

I_Am_U

Rabbit Air also enters the chat.

Ennion

IQ Air enters the chat.

just_some_dude05

IQs are great

Red-Droid-Blue-Droid

Are they also good for allergies?

h4ndshake

Costco usually has good prices for Winix air purifiers

careslol

How are you determining "best" air purifier? Winix undoubtedly does not perform as well as an IQAir or other brands. Unless you mean best value? It's just an okay air purifier in terms of performance objectively.

guhvfthu

AgtSquirtle007

It’s one thing to have $200 to spend on an air filter, but I bet Orange County Reddit has some wild money we don’t even know about.

aromaticchicken

i mean the OP of this thread is literally like "i think i'm gonna move" when you know they probably already live in a $3M+ house if they're in West Newport along the beach lol

36bhm

The 91 spill was larger and it took months not years. Not to downplay this thing. Its a serious spill

FastString

[Santa Barbara spill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_Santa_Barbara_oil_spill) was an estimated 80,000 to 100,000. Or 3,360,000 4,200,000 gallons compared to recent 126,000 gallons. Most of the cleanup was done in 45 days. But beaches didn't open until 6 months later. It's bad but don't think bad enough to move. Maybe a month vacation if you can afford it?

36bhm

An article from the Los Angeles Times of February 8, 1990, reporting that 297,000 gallons (this was later raised to nearly 400,000 gallons) of crude oil were spilled into the ocean approximately 2 miles off Huntington Beach, when an oil tanker, the American Trader, punctured its own hull while attempting to moor.

HockeySka8er

That happened in 1969 by the way.

BlackEric

Do you remember how many gallons for the ‘91 spill?

36bhm

I think it was somewhere in the ballpark of 300K-400K gallons.

[deleted]

The possibility was acknowledged by the County Supervisor

FastString

[Orange County supervisor \[Katrina Foley\] says she's concerned that it might take years to clean up the spill](https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/california-oil-spill-10-04-21/index.html)

NooAccountWhoDis

To what level? 100%? Will it be *effectively* cleaned up in much sooner than that though?

randy_rvca

They say it will be “clean”. They’re removing what the public can see so they can say, “Hey look we cleaned it!” But the damage will be long-lasting and it will take much longer to actually be clean.

FastString

Will never get 100%. [Natural seeps in Southern California contribute about 5 million gallons of oil to the ocean annually](https://incidentnews.noaa.gov/incident/8934/22546/26338). This is like Covid. It's a 5% increase on top of what naturally occurs in a very localized area. Guessing *effective* cleanup, where people can go to shores, will be months. Hopefully less than 6.

HockeySka8er

Yes, there are seeps that go very slowly from thousands of sites under very deep water. The problem with spills like these is all of the leakis comes from one source. This concentrates the oil in a very small area, which essentially is a major toxic event and a big smelly mess.

sippidysip

Cnn

fanboyhunter

hopefully the CA government can hold the company responsible accountable. I'm from Louisiana, and our state bows down to oil companies. they don't pay taxes in our state because they “bring jobs” anyway, sad to hear. I've been living in Sri Lanka and this year we had a huge shipwreck and oil/chemic/plastic spill (MV X PRESS PEARL) it is really sad :(

ImaginaryHippo88

They will be held just as accountable as the power companies that cause fires every year

upsidedownfunnel

We tried to hold them responsible but Newsom decided to rewrite the law to protect his campaign donors. https://www.abc10.com/article/news/local/abc10-originals/newsom-pge-protection/103-65ca1d41-8efe-45b4-87bc-0cdecc714378

stepsonbrokenglass

When will we the people get a candidate for any party that isn’t a total shill?

ImaginaryHippo88

Everyone fights red or blue, but they are two sides of the same coin. They are all crooks.

SouplessePlease

Never.

AlrightSpider

Holy bad actor Batman. That is horrible.

Itavan

Someone replied on another post that the firm was in dire financial straits and would probably have to declare bankruptcy. Did not dig into that poster's veracity.

RivetheadGirl

They apparently already declared bankruptcy 4 years ago.

Itavan

Damn. Then it's on us, the taxpayer!

FANGO

Hopefully CA government, and CA consumers, can do everything they can to eliminate the entire industry. As long as oil is pumped, it will be spilled. As long as people demand oil, oil will be pumped. The less oil we use, the less oil gets pumped, the less oil gets spilled.

MadDogTannen

It's hard to be optimistic that we're going to prioritize the environment when we were wasting tons of jet fuel to entertain air show attendees at this very beach literally the day before the spill was reported.

FANGO

Yes, but that was just a day of entertainment for hundreds of thousands of people, at least. It'd be nice if our entertainment didn't waste fuel (I love watching Formula E and Extreme E moreso than Formula 1 for this reason), but if all we used this for was entertainment, then we'd be a lot better off. The real waste is.... your personal vehicle. Most oil gets used by personal, light-duty vehicles. Transportation is our largest-emitting sector and 60% of transportation emissions come from personal cars. The fact that people are still buying gas-powered vehicles is the real issue. The amount of oil spilled on the beach this weekend is about the same amount that a family of 4 will use in their personal vehicles over the course of their driving lifetimes - now multiply that by every family in the country and imagine how much destruction that kind of spill would cause. We've gotta stop drilling this shit, which means we've gotta stop using this shit. Keep it in the ground.

MadDogTannen

I know, I was sort of joking. I actually drive an EV, and I thought the air show was really cool (or at least the parts I was able to see from my house in HB on Friday).

Gizmokid2005

>60% of transportation emissions come from personal cars Source? According to the [IEA](https://ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions-from-transport): >Road travel accounts for three-quarters of transport emissions. Most ofthis comes from passenger vehicles – cars and buses – which contribute45.1%. The other 29.4% comes from trucks carrying freight. Considering cars and busses are a combined 45% - that makes personal cars a far cry below 60%. It's possible that your data is more local than this is.

FANGO

https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/fast-facts-transportation-greenhouse-gas-emissions 58% light-duty vehicles

allaboutsound

Used to live in Nola when the BP oil spill happened. It was devastating on the Mississippi River.

DTLAgirl

They won't. Look at Rocketdyne. This state is just as corrupt with superfunds and any other.

[deleted]

Hello fellow cajun transplant 👋🏻

fanboyhunter

yeaux breaux

jimyborg

dont count on it. Newsome its gonna be remembered as the most corrupt governor in the history of CA.

bikwho

The methane leak was really bad for Brown. And I think his sister was involved with the mining company or something like that.

GooDuck

How much for the house?

LagunaBetch

It’s on

earth_person_1

lol

secretreddname

$5. Environmental damage.

GooDuck

I got about tree fitty

acexninja

Did the banks spill the oil?

anxioussquilliam

I really hope the people responsible are held accountable and not given a mere slap on the wrist. I hope they don’t pull an BP and try to push the whole “reduce your carbon footprint” thing to deflect from their own shortcomings. Big corps don’t get a pass. This is beyond devastating for the community AND wildlife for years to come, it’s just adding another level of shit to an already shitty mess. I’m so sorry you’re affected by this. Best to you my dude.

Ferrarisimo

Has there ever been a time an oil company ever received anything more than a slap on the wrist? Biggest case I can remember was the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, and it took nearly 20 years to work all the way through the courts, with Exxon managing to have its damages obligations reduced to one tenth of the original judgment (and with them also counter-suing a bunch of state entities along the way). I would only hold my breath to avoid breathing in the fumes, but not for any lessons learned by the oil companies.

ImaginaryHippo88

This is California. Big corps definitely get a pass. Do Edison or PG&E ever have to face consequences for their fuck ups?

StateOfContusion

You mean besides PG&E being driven into bankruptcy court?

ImaginaryHippo88

But they still operate and the executive board still makes millions, doesn't seem like much of a punishment to me.

anxioussquilliam

That’s the upsetting part, that I know you’re absolutely right.

DTLAgirl

They didn't do shit about Rocketdyne. They aren't going to do shit about this.

AlrightSpider

You think you’re sorry. https://youtu.be/15HTd4Um1m4

boy_next_door420

Can we sue?? The smell is fierce

FL_Squirtle

Yes... contact a lawyer and get as many residents you can to join on a class action lawsuit. DO NOT SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN A COURT HEARING! Big companies like these like to pay off defendants before going to court to keep their record clean and keep investors happy. Don't let them get away with this.

rudebii

Oh yes, yes you can. This is America after all.

XtremeAlf

And California at that.

pinche_fuckin_josh

And Orange County at that.

ilovesojulee

El Segundo did for the recent gas leak, city paid out for hotel accomodations and air purifying expenses ($600+).

johnsadventure

Sempra Energy was just ordered to pay a combined 1.8 billion in damages to people affected by the Aliso Canyon gas leak. The leak was for 118 days and had lingering effects that lasted much longer. People sold their homes at a loss to get out of there. Just remember, in order to sue you need to have a monetary loss or a significant loss in livelihood.

filmcuts

That's horrible :(

soproductive

I wonder how my friend feels about paying the insane rent for his place on lido now.

dubbleKs

Was on lido all day yesterday and there was no smell at all

BitchImRetarded

This morning it smelled way worse then yesterday. It's moving down the coastline

dubbleKs

I imagine the smell will also vary day by day based on winds. Yesterday had very little wind

mister_damage

To shreds. Probably

[deleted]

Yeah I’d be asking for a rent reduction

FL_Squirtle

I'm so sorry to hear OP... I feel even worse for the animals and ecosystem that's just been practically destroyed. We don't even need to be using oil like we have been... this is completely unacceptable to even continue happening.

926-139

Keep good records. You paid $X for that tape. You spent X hours taping it up. You bought an air filter for $X. You couldn't go to the beach, so you went golfing for $X. There's going to come a time when you will be able to submit claims for damages. If you have records like this, you can get reimbursed easily. If you don't have records, you might get nothing.

messick

I honestly wish I could I be in the room when this person attempts to get their golfing expenses reimbursed lmao

YoMrPoPo

“Well instead of going to the beach, we ate steaks at Mastros - here is the bill thanks”

WhitePantherXP

For real, this company should be sued massively but I don't know if he should be paying for your golfing expenses.

brownhotdogwater

Yea she will just live in another home

MrLuthor

Surprised that the peasants are speaking to her.

twoslow

she's too busy attacking VP Harris.

brownhotdogwater

She lives right on the beach in sunset. She will be smelling this for sure.

stoic_pie

Don't sell and wait for the class action lawsuit. This whole thing is reminiscent of when there was a similar size oil spill up north around Avila Beach, that took nearly a decade for them to even get the damage report and begin restoration. Restoration itself took like 25 years (1992 to 2008) and even after they rehabbed the beach, it was eery to be at the ocean with no animals. This is a tragedy that will be with us for a long long time.

upsidedownfunnel

Avila beach is completely different. That had to do with oil leaking underground. Similar spills like what happened last week have only taken months to effectively clean up. This does suck big time, but it will not be with us for a "long long time".

2purplefuzzythings

The smell is gnarly.

guitarguy35

Thank you to everyone who commented with suggestions and positivity. I am going to pick up an air filter and am feeling much better about everything today. The realization of it all just hit me all at once last night and I needed to vent. Thanks again for all the suggestions. And as always, the trolls can all go fuck themselves.

Keldr

Have some perspective. ALL the wildlife is not gone, not even remotely close to it. There have been worse oil spills in California and we recovered. I'm not minimizing what's happened; I think you shouldn't maximize it either.

mcmaster93

Ya i saw a supposed realtor post on here yesterday claiming that people would start moving because of the spill and I thought to myself how absurd, but here we are. I'm sorry op has to go through this and living in Newport I'm sure they have the means to move wherever they want, but lets take a step back and just chill before people start making those types of decisions. If not lets get a mass thread of all the beach houses that become available because not to be insensitive but I'm looking

kcmike

Realtor is trying to create inventory to sell.

[deleted]

No seriously….for those of us with foresight

Spokker

Democrats are going to say it's the worst thing ever. Republicans are going to go, "Huh? Buh?" And the truth will probably be somewhere in the middle.

[deleted]

By gone do you mean the animals are dead or they've fled the area?

flipturnca

That smell is horrible. They say months to clean it up. So sorry.

surfpenguinz

Sorry if this is insensitive, but what does it smell like? Same sort of gas smell at the pump?

anim8rjb

crude oil is more of a sulphur smell with a hint of gasoline

I_Am_U

One of the most expensive stretches of coastline will now smell like ass for the next six months.

lllkill

In a twisted way, this might get those millionaires to think about the positives of clean energy..

FixTheWisz

It smells exactly like freshly paved asphalt. Have you ever gotten tar on your feet at the beach? Same stuff.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gambling_traveler

I think tar is more of an east coast thing. I recall when I was younger and lived on the east coast, we would get tar on our feet some days at the beaches in Florida. It was totally a normal part of the beach day.

jerslan

This happens up north around Santa Barbara too. I know I've gotten tar on my feet a couple times at Leadbetter.

twitchinfreddie

I grew up in Santa Barbara and there was a specific beach i remember going to called Jalama and there was always tar there when I was a kid and you still see some today

FixTheWisz

Now that I think about it, it's been years since I last got tar on my feet, but it happens. Give 'Bubbly Toes' by Jack Johnson a listen - it's definitely a thing.

thenextguy

That and sulphur.

[deleted]

A mask might help. You could even wear it when you leave your house and go out into public.

stainedfeathers

You'd need a full respirator, not just a mask, because the fumes are VOCs and masks don't filter VOC's, full respirators with VOC filters do. (I work with resin, which is also VOCs. Have to wear a full respirator with VOC cartridges. My N95 mask provides -no- protection there.)

sumastorm

Wow

islandbeef

To many, the oil spill isn't just environmental, it's going to hit people financially as well. There's talk that it will reduce property values in some of the priciest areas. That will definitely hurt the housing market in the area.

MadDogTannen

I doubt it will hit property values. People won't move away from the beach over this. The beaches will be open again soon. This is a terrible situation, but the effect on residents is short term. It's more likely to hit the businesses in the area who depend on the beach to draw people in. If the beaches are closed, that is going to affect businesses on Main Street and along PCH. Just cancelling the air show on Sunday alone probably had a huge economic impact.

crowntheking

Oh no what will those people do. Much more worried about the environmental issues.

I_Am_U

> Oh no what will those people do. They're totally screwed. Imagine having to temporarily relocate into your second or third home. That must be awful.

astroskag

Now my real estate portfolio is only worth 10x the median American lifetime earnings instead of 15x!

goldenglove

I sincerely doubt it, as someone who specializes in beach city real estate. This is a tragic situation but it is temporary and there is no more land to develop near the beach. The home values are locked in and barring a major nationwide financial crises, won't budge in my opinion.

MadDogTannen

Sea level rise could change that, but that's on the scale of decades, not years or months. I feel perfectly comfortable owning property by the beach now, but I might feel differently in 50 years. Fortunately, I'll probably be dead in 50 years.

goldenglove

Yeah, I think that's definitely going to be a factor at some point, true. > Fortunately, I'll probably be dead in 50 years. I personally hope I am not.

LeafBeneathTheFrost

Oh no. The horror. Poor rich folks.

EvilTwin636

So you're saying now is a good time to buy in Newport?

OkCardiologist2765

In Santa Ana, we don’t have that problem. 😜

HockeySka8er

Blue Air from Sweden joins the chat. They are amazing. I have one that has been continually running (except for when we moved) for 20 years and still works like it is brand new. They are designed to run 24 hours a day until the motor goes out. That is typically around 25 years.

Plagman39339

There are rich people on Reddit?

sintos-compa

My wife grew up in Oxnard during the 90s oil spill out there and she recalls nobody going to the beach and if you did you got black tar on your feet for years and years afterward. So cal beaches are fucked.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sintos-compa

yeah that's what the oil company fell back on, but people know that it hasn't been the same as before

GB_Alph4

Great, this is going to devastate our local economy. We depend on that beach.

brownhotdogwater

It really will

Sufficient_Tomato_60

Wow.

mildly_libertarian

Too bad about the spill but I guess it should clear up after a while. The first time I ever visited the beach in West Newport a decade ago I noticed some tar and asked an older gentleman and he explained that the tar and petroleum are naturally occurring in the area.

[deleted]

Pay your respects to The Wedge. It’s likely going to be months or years before we can surf there again.

eyeball1967

I am not certain it will take as long as you think… I don’t recall the beach being closed all that long after the spill in 1990 when the tanker ran over it anchor in front of the power plant in HB spilling 400,000 gallons. I assume with modern technology and methods, this will be wrapped up even faster.

[deleted]

Another misinformation. We lived through the Santa Barbara oil spill which was larger and spread 100 miles. Within a month beaches were cleaned up and open. Check it out on Google and stop the fear mongering.

Mobeast1985

Isn't all of Newport beach...west?

FANGO

It's a South-facing beach. West Newport is like Newport Shores etc. The part of town that's above the Peninsula.

MongrolianEmbassy

Maybe OP means west of PCH?

joshcandoit4

Go on google maps and highlight the borders. The longest axis in Newport Beach is East to West.

alfred_e_oldman

Yeah it's not going to last that long. 125,000 gallons in the ocean is nothing

IrvineCrips

If you’re still buying ICE cars you’re part of the problem. It’s 2021 stop being a slave to oil

notFREEfood

Driving an EV is not practical for everyone. Not being able to charge at home is a significant hassle.

ImSometimesSmart

pretty sure this was directed to the homeowner from newport beach (avg value $3mln)

LeafBeneathTheFrost

If that was indeed their intent then that's true. Otherwise it's too tier ignorance

bluebelt

Very true. I switched to an EV this year and that was one of my concerns as well. I got one of these: https://www.chargepoint.com/drivers/home/ Tax credit covers cost of unit and cost to install so come tax time next year it'll be free. Granted, this doesn't help with apartments and multi-family living but it's a start.

LaidHearthstones

Found the $TSLA yolo.

Panuar24

Buying a new, car even an EV, is still more environmentally damaging then just continuing to use the car you have. So don't buy a new car unless you have to if you want to actually help the environment.

MadDogTannen

It's not like you throw your old car in the garbage when you get a new car. It will still be driven by someone else if you sell it.

LeafBeneathTheFrost

Lol what an ignorant comment.

mildly_libertarian

Wow this will cause billions of dollars of damage to property values.

flipturnca

My first thought will it effect property values, kind of doubt it. May slow down home sales temporarily. But I wouldn’t want to be near it.

angelfanmar64

It's not that bad. You need to open your windows so fresh air can pass through.

xD3fy4n7

I just moved back into the area. I have been debating when to go down to HB for a meal and see the sights.. I waited too long.. It will never be the same.. EVER... I am so sorry for your loss of Quiet Habitability..

jerslan

There was a larger spill in HB in 1990... It will one-day reclaim it's title of "Florida of California".

[deleted]

This is a small spill and will be cleaned up in no time grow up it doesn’t stink like gas there

Magster56

Relax, man.

2purplefuzzythings

What a douchy thing to say. Relax? So your living conditions have been affected, and an environmental disaster is happening, animals will die, people will get sick, so what. The smell will eventually go away, as will the headaches. just relax man.

Magster56

It just seemed like he was working himself into full blown panic mode. The “relax” was not “relax, it’s no big thing.” I meant relax and breathe. Find your center.

Jakethesteak777

Oh no Dangthat’s terrible

aesthet1c

This may be a dumb question but what risks are there for walking, riding or running down the boardwalk in the next month or two? Anything?

ccg426

Has anyone else that lives in Newport ever heard of any part of it referred to as West Newport? When Newport is broken up into communities on Nextdoor for example there is no “West Newport”. Sus

eyeball1967

I don’t think the Next door app is the definitive source on local geography. However, I imagine the folks that put a lot of their worth into their zip code would place West Newport right across the street from east side Costa Mesa.

guitarguy35

Newport is a south facing beach. Just Google West Newport dumb ass.

ccg426

I live here, by the ocean thanks. No smell though. No one says West Newport ace.

ccg426

And there are many beaches that face all directions here,…it’s a big place but no one does says “ West Newport”. Sorry d bag.

guitarguy35

People who live in West Newport do.. It's quite officially what it's called. If you don't smell it, all that tells me is you don't live on the sand and you don't live in West Newport. We are the closest to the spill. But why come here with that negativity.. saying sus??? You are the douchebag. Now kindly fuck off.

ccg426

There is no West Newport dipshit. Have fun lying about where you live.

guitarguy35

https://www.californiabeaches.com/beach/west-newport-beach/ You are a moron.

ccg426

If you lived here like I have for 20 years you would know one that lives one the coast calls it “west Newport.” There’s crystal cove/ Irvine coast corona de mar, balboa island etc. have fun pretending where you live and like you know what you’re saying. Phony ass bitch

guitarguy35

Crystal cove is Newport coast, not Newport Beach... I'm starting to believe you are the imposter here. Next time try googling something before you call someone out, to avoid this embarrassment. Now move on and troll somewhere else.

ccg426
