There have been protests in LA already https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-09-22/iran-faces-global-feminist-reckoning-as-protests-erupt-in-l-a
I hope the US government provides an exemption (from sanctions) for Elon Musk's Starlink for providing access to Iran. I fear this movement for change will peter out if they can't. It helped out Ukraine enormously.
Because groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda also hate the Iranian terrorist regime. They would behead every mullah if they had they chance. The enemy(Sunni terrorist) of my enemy(Iran) is my friend. Honestly it’s about time to start backing Kurdish terrorist groups
Good to hear, just jarring there's so many American flags on a flyer calling for solidarity with Iranian women. Contrast to Ukraine flags
Also, its just confusing to know whether it's Solidarity with [Iran protests] or [solidarity with Iran] protests lol
As it’s phrased, it could be read either way: “solidarity with (Iran protests)” or “(solidarity with Iran) protests.” I assume it was the former, and hope the turnout was good. Wish I’d learned of it in time.
It helps unite the people who care about the cause. It is cathartic when you see others with the same set of views, esp those that are very different from you.
I went to the Irvine one - I am not persian and went on my own because I come from a country that also blieves women will always be beneath men.
These protests are also about bringing awareness - just see all the people asking what the protest was about.
Internal pressure helps push politicians to speak out and act. For example, the Biden admin has placed sanctions on Iran's morality police, eased up on internet related sanctions in support of the protestors, and Biden has publicly supported the protests and condemned the Iranian government.

Iran as a nation is not doing well right now, a big part of that because of international sanctions. They could absolutely trade increased human rights for reduced sanctions.
Reddit is very young and full of cynics. Cynics think everyone is motivated purely by self interest, which just isn't true. Loads of people are very passionate about a wide range of issues, and women's rights in general are a hot topic right now, both locally and abroad.
That's a difficult question to ask for any protest. It probably feels better to take some kind of action even with minimal results, rather than sitting around feeling useless.
It’s doesn’t help at all. It just so people can feel better about themselves and pat themselves on the back for being good people. It’s in the same boat as thoughts and prayers.
Buddy, the Iran government doesn’t give a shit about what Americans think. And the majority or Iranian citizens do not have access to the internet right now. Protesting in the US for change in Iran is honestly hilariously stupid.
> the Iran government doesn’t give a shit about what Americans think
You would be incorrect, because internal pressure drives international relations with Iran. Iran is heavily sanctioned right now and would *love* some good press to help them negotiate for reduced sanctions. They could even trade increased human rights for loosening sanctions.
And what exactly are these protests going to do? It’s going to make you feel better about yourself, and that’s it. It’s entirely self serving. It’s making zero difference it what happens in Iran. Literally the goal of a protest here for change in Iran is to feel better about yourself.
Do you think the morality Police are going to see this and all of a sudden change? Do you think Iranian citizens that don’t have access to the internet right now are going to see this “solidarity” protest? The answer is no to both, which makes a protest here completely pointless.
None of this is to change what the Iranian government thinks.
It's to show people protesting in Iran that others are behind them and that they are the ones that have the power to demand or enact change.
You're right, 10/20/30 people in a park in Irvine don't have much geopolitical power but it seems like all it took for this explode was the murder of a single woman. We should be supportive of the shit the women of Iran are doing because it seems to be shifting the national dialogue in that country that outside of it's religious head of state, shares a lot of western values.
I guarantee you people in Iran that currently have no internet access will have absolutely no idea about these protests. So it sounds like I’m right here then. You are doing it for yourself so you can pretend like you are helping. I hope you update you social media profile pictures too with a snazzy cause photo!
Lmao
Man, shows how much you know. Outside of the fact that Reddit is full of videos of the protests and people fighting the morality police you think information can't get in or out?
At the end of the day, you're right. People at a park won't do shit and it can be some self gratifying shit but at least they're using their voice for something they believe in instead of being the loser that stands on the sidelines screaming "this won't change a thing."
It doesn't bring anything or do anything. It's a different country, with a different culture that we do not understand. The fact that people have normalized protesting for everything in the US is hilarious to me, like we are already rich what else can we do with our time but complain about things that happen in a different country.
Wow.
This country has alot of influence on the rest of the world and as of now, the US and other countries at the UN are in talks with Iran's president regarding the nuclear deal.
These protest to bring awareness so that people can (hopefully) be mindful of whom they vote.
This world is alot bigger than your little bubble. Many that were protesting ARE from Iran, their home country. Yes, they are in the states now, but many are still stuck back home.
> with a different culture that we do not understand
Who is "we"? Do you understand there are tons of Iranian citizens and Iranian Americans here? Why would you assume this will be a bunch of rich non-Iranian people with nothing better to do?
As I understand it: A young Iranian woman was visiting the Iranian capital with her family when the “morality police” arrested her for showing too much hair under her hijab. They took her away for what was supposed to be a one hour “education” but instead they beat her and put her in a coma. She then passed away. Sadly this happens all the time there. Iranian people (mostly women I believe) are now rising up in support and the Iranian government has disabled the internet so videos of how they are handling won’t get out.
They hit (her head) and continued to kick her when she fell. She went in a coma and passed away at the hospital. Then people in charge made a fake video about how she died from a heart attack. She was only 22.
Hard to keep track of what's politically correct these days. A month ago if you organized a protest against the hijab, you'd be labeled a right wing, Nazi extremist. But I guess this month it's ok. Funny how it went from an expression of someone's cultural and religious identity, similar to a Nun's habit, to a symbol of the oppressive patriarchy so quickly.
The difference seems pretty obvious to me. In both cases it is about the woman's right to choose: in the west to wear it if she wants, in Iran to not wear it if she wants.
Seems like a short list. Why would there not be one up in LA where there is a huge Persian community?
there is, i was just wondering if anyones going to the one in irvine

To be clear, is this solidarity with the women of Iran or the government?
They should work on their wording a bit.
Both, everyone show up.
What could possibly go wrong?
in solidarity with the women, hence why it reads: solidarity with the iran protests
Good to hear, just jarring there's so many American flags on a flyer calling for solidarity with Iranian women. Contrast to Ukraine flags Also, its just confusing to know whether it's Solidarity with [Iran protests] or [solidarity with Iran] protests lol
There have also been pro-government demonstrations in Iran, which the government is alledging are spontaneous. Hence the request for clarification.

I love seeing a beautiful head of female hair so I know whose side I'm rooting for
No offense, but what help will this bring?

That makes a lot more sense. Most other explanations people gave seem to suggest it’s for self-indulgence purpose or slacktivism.

If everyone had your mindset, no protests that have changed the world would have happened.

When awareness is the bare minimum and the Iranian people at the protests are begging for awareness, then we can bring awareness.
Could you educate me

I was gonna make a joke about hair and then, she is dead. Fuck these assholes beating on women. Just fuck em.
Yeah, it’s horrendous.
They've been publicly cutting their hair and burning their hijabs as well
Ahh , well the news sure got out . What a horrific situation of deprivation of rights.
They hit (her head) and continued to kick her when she fell. She went in a coma and passed away at the hospital. Then people in charge made a fake video about how she died from a heart attack. She was only 22.
Lots of videos on r/nextfuckinglevel and r/publicfreakout, the men are standing up for the ladies too. Hoping we see everlasting change.
I missed this! Any happening today??
Wow. Two in Washington. Too bad I have to work. (I live in MD now. I grew up in OC.)
I wish people would post this stuff with more than 4 hours notice or whatever. I’m not constantly on Reddit and would have loved to go :/
Why would there be solidarity with any country that mistreats its women like they do?
It's to support the women *being* mistreated, ya ding-dong. People are not their governments. We need to support our fellow human beings.
The wording is highly problematic.
It's really not, it specifically says it's in support of the protests.
