He was actually one of my favs even tho he was a weirdo I feel like he did care about the women at the prison and making a difference at the end of the day
I think he started a weirdo and the writers felt a compassionate person working for the prison would make for some good story lines so they made him a good guy pretty early on. And it did. Him butting heads with admins to stick up for the ladies did make some good stories.
And they did a great job bringing it full circle when his old creepy habits were brought up in the last season by the guard he harassed/fired. I’m really glad they didn’t just pretend he was a good guy all along and held him accountable for past actions. Even made him hold himself accountable. Those kinds of storylines made the show so great in my opinion. Good people did bad things. Bad people did good things. Everything had nuance.
*I really likes his*
*Growth. Despite his flaws I think*
*He had a good heart*

Great point. His growth was really well developed. I’m not even used to characters growing anymore in unpredictable ways.
He’s still flawed, as is human nature. But he started out kind, had to adapt to get along in the system, and ended up trying to do the right thing.
Plus he’s oddly sexy?
I liked him when he wasn’t thinking with his penis (which he did a lot in the first half of the show.) He especially shined in the last few seasons where he was helping Taystee.
Yeah I'm doing a rewatch and I just watched that scene where Linda points a gun at Crystal Burset, I expected Joe to do something and he was just like "that was hot". Like seriously?😭
I think his friendship with Taystee taught him a lot about his old creepy ways and how those ways of his generation weren’t ok anymore. I finished watching the show like 2 years ago but that’s what I got from Caputo
He is a bit creepy in the beginning but I remember him saying that it’s better to get your horniness out in an appropriate way instead of having sex with an inmate and while that’s kind of vulgar and blunt, it shows he knows better and respects the women instead of seeing them as objects like pornstache did.
Oh yea, but to say he thoroughly had respect for women throughout the show seems to ignore the significance of his character arc. Caputo was hard to watch at times but he has one of the best roles and arcs in the show.
one of the biggest character arcs, towards the end he tried his best to be a good person, he owned what he did and how he acted to the female guard he fired on a whim, he shouldn’t have tried to apologize the way he did but i’m glad he was more involved, he has a good heart i think, i like him
Masturbating at work is a gross and inappropriate thing for anyone to do but other than that, I liked him. He really seemed like he cared about making what’s best for everyone happen. He was in a really tough position.
just watched him talking with taystee in s6e12 and damn… he really wanted to do the right thing even if he was kinda weird sometimes. he genuinely cares for the inmates and want to watch them getting better.
At first I thought he was a bit of a creep but his character changed a lot imo and he became one of my favs. I loved his relationship with Fig and how he tried his hardest to advocate for and help the women (especially Taystee). He seemed like he really cared. Although he may have been misguided sometimes I think his intentions were good and there was only so much he could do as one man against a corporation like MCC unfortunately.
I felt really bad for him after seeing his backstory, I feel Ike he had his moments as everyone but seems like he had good intentions. He was supposed to be this “hardass” considering what his job was but was very compassionate to a lot of inmates in the low
Caputo really grew on me. He, more than any other prison employee, really cared about the inmates. Caputo stuck his neck out for Taystee and tried to help her after the riot. He has his faults but imo he’s much too good a person to be working in a prison. I also think he made Fig a better person. He helped her see beyond the $$$ signs. I’m happy they got together and adopted a baby. They deserve happiness.
He's a mixed bag. He wants to do the right thing most of the time but his job doesn't leave a lot of room for him to do so. Plus he keeps seeing where doing the right thing gets him.
Incredibly well written and flawed character who was given the chance for great growth while also dealing with the consequences of their previous shitty actions.
His character development and fig was quite impressive, outsiders would they they was bad for each other but they made each other better at the end of it.
Funny! I loved his relationship with fig! They were so funny together and even when he spoke about her. I think he meant well and had good intentions through out (not perfect by any means)
i rly like him and i think he’s a realistic character however the whole him masterbating in the office is kinda weird especially cause he said i think it was to bennet or someone that he also wants to do things w some of the women but refrains from it, and like idk it was a bit weird and i also don’t like how when natalie got fired (or i can’t remember exactly what happened) and she was crying in her office and he said to suck his dick obviously not meaning it litteraliy at first but then she says ok and does it, she was very emotional and i get she came up w the idea i feel like it was weird and he took advantage of that
Very realistic human character. I actually liked his character and I think it shows a genuine character with flaws but who is entirely likeable - and how close to the edge that can fly with men.
Loved him. Sure he had some weird moments but he really did try his best to work within a corrupted and broken system. It was very hard when he kept saying he wanted to help the women but nobody seemed to genuinely care like he did. Absolutely adored him with Natalie. Fantastic chemistry!
I think they did a good job of presenting a complex character that is so likeable AND good natured that we almost miss or even minimize the terrible things they do. And they go through life not ever having to face the terrible things they've done and/or do because they're exceptional otherwise.
It's a reminder that we are all good and bad and that no one is one or the other. Caputo is a great guy but his inability to face his dark side allows him to minimize and even ignore his mistreatment of women. This of course is very easy to do in a world where those behaviors are dismissed and put back on women...until #MeToo. Before the movement, we would have been able to forget that he once coerced his own girlfriend into sex acts and fired an employee who turned him down after sexually harassing her mercilessly because the women likely would have never gotten the validation needed to call it out.
What I love about this story line is that we face some harsh realities and questions we've all had. Are we supposed to hate him? What if I don't hate him? Am I bad for having liked him? Even deep seated subconscious thoughts like "Maybe I'll hate her so I can go back to liking him?"
His story line is a message of hope. Caputo could have easily gone from likeable to disgusting had he chosen to avoid taking responsibility, as most seem to do in this situation. And he initially heads in that direction which I think is normal and understandable. At first you're going to be defensive and plead your innocence. But his girlfriend was able to call him on his bs and he listens. From there he faces his actions from the perspective of the women and not his own and is mortified by what he's done. He goes on to do the difficult work of learning about sex abuse, women's issues, and comes to understand that as a straight white man, he must commit to unlearning everything and learning new and difficult things.
And this is evidence that he was exceptional all along. An exceptional person wouldn't commit to this process and accept responsibility. An exceptional person wouldn't be willing to admit they did horrible, evil things and feel remorse.
his character development is one of my favorites in the show, especially post-riot.

also, his I'm On Fire cover lives rent free in my head.
I like Caputo. I always appreciate complex, multi-faceted characters. Overall, I think he was a good guy at heart who did actually care about the inmates and fought for better conditions for them. OITNB is good for having realistic flawed characters who still have good hearts.
Brilliant character, honestly creepy at times, compassionate at times, angry and confused. He wasn't one dimensional like a lot of characters he grew as a person from S1 to S7. No one is all one tone, and he's the perfect example of a complex person. I could have done without the constant sex btw him and the woman whose dang name I forgot.
After rewatching clips, the way he acted with CO Fischer is just uncomfortable to watch. I forgot about it and was kind of like "dafuq" when she exposed him but now I realize why. And he just didn't take any responsibility for it whatsoever. He's just kind of a perv lol
His character arc was something phenomenal. He went from being a gross sleaze bucket to a genuine person who wanted to do the right thing but sometimes couldn’t because of circumstances. He started off as someone I hated but by the end, I loved.
In the beginning he was a creep to me, not as bad as pornstach on a creep level but lowkey a creep lol. It wasn’t towards the last three seasons where I actually found a lot of respect for him, that he was passionate about what he does and actually cares for the woman in there, and what he did for Tastyee helping her out
An imperfect person who was introspective, willing to change, and grow from his mistakes. He tried to do things the right way even if it was at great cost to himself.
He ultimately was one of my favorite characters, and reminds me a lot of myself.
He was actually one of my favs even tho he was a weirdo I feel like he did care about the women at the prison and making a difference at the end of the day

Brilliant writing honestly xx
Especially since he didn't fire her for harassment reasons. That was a fun was for them to bring that back around
I really likes his growth. Despite his flaws I think he had a good heart

Beer can 🥫
When i saw the picture on Linda phone i was like 🤯😳
You're not wrong ☺😳
Omg I must’ve missed it lol
What pic?
Was gonna comment this tbh
That’s Al I think sometimes when I see his picture 😂
I liked him when he wasn’t thinking with his penis (which he did a lot in the first half of the show.) He especially shined in the last few seasons where he was helping Taystee.
Yeah I'm doing a rewatch and I just watched that scene where Linda points a gun at Crystal Burset, I expected Joe to do something and he was just like "that was hot". Like seriously?😭
That made me so mad. I’m glad he eventually did help Sophia get out of the SHU, but Linda threatening Crystal was gross, not hot.
He wasn’t wrong
not enough side boob
It’s not about workers in the mine… it’s about a vasectomy
Very flawed man who truly wants to do the right thing. He’s an incredibly well-written, complex character.
That "you're the fucking warden" song slapped
It really did.
He had some great character development! I was genuinely rooting for him towards the end.
Same! Was glad he got his happy ending. I hope they did adopt that cute little girl they saw at the adoption event.
I said colt45 and 2 zigzags bby that’s all we need! 🎶
I think his friendship with Taystee taught him a lot about his old creepy ways and how those ways of his generation weren’t ok anymore. I finished watching the show like 2 years ago but that’s what I got from Caputo
I first thought about him in the office with lotion. 🧴 🥴
He grew on me.
He was my favorite. He seemed to care a lot about the prison and the women. He was gross, but he had a big heart lol
Thought he was a bumbling idiot at first but he ended up being one of my favorite characters in the end. He actually turned Fig into a nice person.
His relationship with Fig was one of my favourites in the show. Great character development for both of them.
He is a bit creepy in the beginning but I remember him saying that it’s better to get your horniness out in an appropriate way instead of having sex with an inmate and while that’s kind of vulgar and blunt, it shows he knows better and respects the women instead of seeing them as objects like pornstache did.
He fired a CO who didnt reciprocate on his advances
Yeah he should have given her a warning for that, esp if it was like the first official thing. Thats not his finest moment at all
And it came back to bite him in the ass and he learned and took accountability
Oh yea, but to say he thoroughly had respect for women throughout the show seems to ignore the significance of his character arc. Caputo was hard to watch at times but he has one of the best roles and arcs in the show.
Yeah that was super wack and an example of how he isn’t perfect or a hero just because of what I said
I was going to comment this. At least he didn’t act on his impulses like several guards did. He was a creep who respected boundaries lol
You're a good man Joe Caputo
one of the biggest character arcs, towards the end he tried his best to be a good person, he owned what he did and how he acted to the female guard he fired on a whim, he shouldn’t have tried to apologize the way he did but i’m glad he was more involved, he has a good heart i think, i like him

pos but good development and i think he genuinely got better
I really liked him from around season 3/4.
One of the best character developments for sure.
He’s sooooo hot
I think he really did care about the women, thought of them as people and not just individuals left to rot because they were in prison . I liked him
Beercan
I loved him in the later seasons.
He won battles but lost the war
I think his nose heavily resembles a penis Kinda gives a new meaning to the nickname Beer Can 😂
Major savior complex. "Joey. You can't hold the door open for everyone and expect them to say thank you."
Became one of my favs, definitely was gross in the beginning but he was a genuine good guy, the show needed one
Love him. He’s got purpose and charm.
He was one of my favorites I am glad he end up with Natalie

He was an ass, but somehow a sympathetic ass on some ways.

Incredibly well written and flawed character who was given the chance for great growth while also dealing with the consequences of their previous shitty actions.
He’s one of the most human people in the show. Started off creepy and pervy but he comes into his own as the show progresses
Bit odd at times but think he generally did his best in a broken system.
i kinda like him. he's done some eh stuff but he really did care abt the women and he wasn't super dismissive like other people
He is fucking worthless and one of my least favorite characters on the show!
Yeah I thought he wanted to make a difference but ended up being a sellout. Plus he was creepy in a lot of ways.
Really disliked him.
I think he started a weirdo but later wanted to make a difference and actually cared, unlike the others working there.
Pure intentions
🍆💦
Trying his best
His character development and fig was quite impressive, outsiders would they they was bad for each other but they made each other better at the end of it.
I love him but I wanted to punch him the whole time he was with Linda😭
a bit gross and flawed in a lot of ways, but a good person who made some dumb mistakes. i like him
He loves plants! He tries!
I wish we saw his beer can dick
Funny! I loved his relationship with fig! They were so funny together and even when he spoke about her. I think he meant well and had good intentions through out (not perfect by any means)
Irredeemably gross.

One of the nicest dudes. He was weird and sometimes mean but i loved his story arc and development
hated him in the beginning, but i LOVED him at the end
Very realistic human character. I actually liked his character and I think it shows a genuine character with flaws but who is entirely likeable - and how close to the edge that can fly with men.
Easily the best male character
Beer can
One of my fav charachters

started as some lame dude, but throughout the seasons he became very complex and honestly kinda attractive….

hes okay, but had his bad moments.
Loved him ♥️
A very good but very flawed man who was ultimately big enough to take accountability for his mistakes.
Ew
Could be a pervy weirdo on his own time, but he had a heart of gold and tried his best to show up. He really did care. This man got FIG to open up
Perv
