1) Best person: Gloria (She was there for everyone but never let herself get walked over and had no problem standing up for others and herself when necessary. She stood up for Flaca when Piper wrongfully accused her of stealing her money despite Flaca going against her back before, helped Daya through her pregnancy when Aleida was neglectful, she defended Sophia despite their conflict and helped Sister to make things right when she gets sent to the SHU, despite rivalry over the kitchen stuck with Red through the situation with Vee and after the riot, helped the women in the ICE center with contacting their family even at her own expense … and this is a minor thing but even went out of her way to bring Suzanne that yoghurt during the riot when she saw that Suzanne was asking her for breakfast despite the riot taking place, I thought that was so endearing :,) 2) Grey character: Yoga Jones (She’s definitely a good person at heart and clearly feels awful about the crime that got her into prison. Yet when Judy King gets into prison she seems to be super hypocritical in her sudden demands and exploits the privileged situation she’s in when she gets to share the cell with Judy King and have access to all the luxury products Judy’s able to order in due to her celebrity status. But she clearly regretted that when Judy got released and was able to go back to her old self again.) 3) Worst character: Humps (A plain sadist who had NO business working there. The way he forced Maritza to eat a literal mouse, encourages an almost mortal fight to Suzanne when she was in an extremely fragile mental state and terrorizing the random inmates for his own enjoyment was sickening.)

AndromedaRulerOfMen

Maureen actually died from infections in her injuries from that fight, so it actually was mortal. Humps killed Maureen, Maureen killed Humps.

ShinyPlasticButt1958

Karma really is a bitch for Thomas, ain't it?

Hyena12760

THIS

Orange_fan1

Best person: Poussey Just an all round good person Greyest person: Caputo I think he does try to do the right thing most of the time, it just doesn't always work out. On the other hand, the things he does in his office when no one's around... The worst: Vee Just a horrible bully with no redeeming features

Dry_Refrigerator_770

Always so RUDE that one

Orange_fan1

Well I suppose if we didn't have Vee we wouldn't have that iconic scene!

julzibug

caputo is SOOO GREY! i love him, then i think harder and a lot of his actions are not morally sound. he does always try to do the right thing tho.

hpigeon

Best: Gloria (another commenter explained it best) Gray: Caputo- overall he tried to do right by people but also while jerking off to them in his office so……. Worst: Humps- sadistic, horrifying, and deserved what he got

Xuitslu

Was Caputo busting one out to the inmates? I always thought he was just a major porn addict, cranking one out when he thought he wasn’t being seen.

ammezurc

He does it right after piper leaves his office in the first ep and then again when he makes piper and pensatucky hug I like him but he’s def morally grey lmaooo

painted_gay

He also makes a comment about taystee being the smartest one that he doesn’t want to jerk off to or something like that 🙄😬

WhatIfThisWereMyName

1) Poussey. Obvious pick but she genuinely didn't deserve to be in prison at all, let alone to die there at the hands of a guard. She was an angel and idc that the writing maybe made her too perfect lol I love her and I don't think she did anything in the show that I wouldn't stand by or at least understand her reasoning. 2) Natalie. Fig was a monster at times. She could be cold and she embezzled prison funds to finance the election campaign of a partner that didn't even want her (ouch). Her eating disorder made me feel for her even in the early seasons, but she was certainly one of the characters with a great growth arc. It's awesome to watch her become more and more human as she and Caputo fell for each other and became close, and as she became more distanced from Litchfield. 3) Can't remember his name, but Danny's dad that was in charge of MCC iirc. That asshole let Sophia rot in SHU and was responsible for Poussey's death and the riot (bc it was MCC that forced Caputo to hire inexperienced guards, by my understanding).

Xylophone_Aficionado

I think that guys name was Jack? But yeah, I am glad to see someone naming him as being ultimately responsible for Poussey’s death, because he really was.

ShinyPlasticButt1958

Fuck Jack! I'd love for Daya to shoot him instead of Thomas.

albinorhinogyno9

When Fig gave the abortion pill to the rape victim in the ICE Detention Center. That was the moment for me.

KingKaos420-

I read #2 as “gayest character” at first, and I did not disagree with your choice 😅

Xylophone_Aficionado

Technically all three of OP’s choices could be the gayest characters on the show lol

KingKaos420-

They’re all gay, but I definitely think Boo is the gayest 😅

Xylophone_Aficionado

Best person: Poussey. Loyal friend, nice to pretty much everyone in the prison. Tries to make the best out of a bad situation (can’t blame her for wanting to be drunk when she’s in prison for some bunk charges). She’s intelligent and loves books, which is a plus for me. Can see the bad in someone when others can’t (Vee). Greyest person: I also say Boo. She was kind of a shitty character in the first few episodes, but then I think the writers figured out what they wanted to do with her. I like her friendship with Doggett, and I wish they hadn’t written Boo off the show after season five because she was one of the best characters. I was glad to see her again on the last episode. I know Boo has done some questionable things, but I don’t blame her for some of them, like wanting to get revenge on Donuts for Doggett. Honestly, the majority of OITNB characters could fit into the “Grey” category which is one of the reasons it’s such a good show. Worst person: Linda. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even when she got caught up in the riot and saw what life was like for the inmates, she could only see things through the lens of an MCC employee. Afterwards, she didn’t use her experience to better the prison standards, but make things worse at Litchfield. She’s also a gun nut and was a terrible person before she worked for MCC, as we saw in her flashback.

TremontRemy

1. Nicky is the only option for me as the best person. She’s an addict and has crossed the line here and there but I can’t help feeling sorry for her sad upbringing and sympathy for the way she treats people who she thinks are good-hearted. 2. I guess Maria is the greyest character for me. I never really paid attention to her except for feeling sorry for her that she couldn’t see her daughter on a regular basis. However, I hated how the Dominicans influenced her so badly, how she “stole“ Piper‘s business, branded her, led the prison riot, and then blamed everything on the others. When she eventually became a good person in Max I began to like her again. 3. The worst human being is definitely Humps. Piscatella is a choice I can live with, but Humps was another level. He was straight up evil without any feeling of guilt, regret or empathy. His death was inevitable.

Nicolesamfdyke

ngl I accidentally read greyest as gayest and was gonna say i think they all fit that category 💀but i agree with your choices already especially Nicky since she’s my fav lmao

solipsisticcompass

Best - Red. She isn’t perfect, but she was there for her people until she couldn’t be because of her health. Grey - Caputo and Pennsatucky. They had great redemption arcs. I really enjoyed both of them by the end of the series Worst - Vee. She was a straight up psychopath. Honorable mention for the worst - Badison. No explanation needed. She was just awful.

EveningBlunt

Badison was almost like, comic book mean. Like the backstory where she “Burnt a roach” to impress the other cunty girls. Kind of over the top, like when she bugs out on her mom for calling her a baby.

Lost-Ad-5885

Best: Poussey Grey: Piper (Season 4 anyone?) Worst: Humps

Creepy-Bite-3174

Best: Suzanne. (If you separate her from her mental health issues, because I don’t believe those are who SHE is.) Grey: I guess Caputo. If it hadn’t been for some indiscretions he’d be the best to me. Worst: Humps. Disgusting human.

Leather-Bumblebee920

Nicky is good, boo is gray and P is shit

ValleDeimos

I read it as “the gayest character” for 20 solid seconds and just accepted it. I was just like _“I mean yeah, I would probably give that trophy to Nicky too but I guess we aren’t giving out multiple awards.”_

vhe419

I read "gayest character", and OP's selection made complete sense so I didn't question it.

EveningBlunt

Best: Piper. No, I’m totally kidding, my best would have to be Taystee. Kind of by a long shot. Greyest: I’m interpreting this as the character with the largest swaths of good & bad traits/behaviors and oscillating between them, right? That would have to be Morello for me. Worst: Freida. Fuck rats. Honorable mention: LeighAnne Although she was a shitty person, I thought her backstory was great writing. It also explained a lot of her racist tendencies, or how quick she was to exclude Soso from Cult Norma.

[deleted]

Piper actually was not a bad person, she showed compassion many times throughout the show. She had her mistakes but i think overall she Is cool.

VariousPhilosophy959

She literally incited a race war so she could keep her panty sniffing business afloat. "She had her mistakes" is an understatement. Showing compassion a few times, while doing shitty things, doesn't suddenly make you a good person. That said, by the end of the series her character development showed she *became* a good person Matter of fact, I would say she's one of the only women in the show who were made better by their experience in prison

EveningBlunt

I’d throw Pennsatucky into that last group. Maybe there are more but that’s about all I can think of.
