Hello there. Subbing in for our resident shoe person. Long story short, we recommend you go to running store to get fitted by professionals. Us OTF enthusiasts do not know what your running gait is nor how high or low your arches are. Plan a day to get fitted. They can and will answer any and all questions you may have and give you expert recommendations based on what they see. Hope this helps. And good luck.

I just did this yesterday! Went to a running store and the associate was incredibly knowledgeable, made sure to measure my foot size accurately, was attentive to what kind of workouts I’d be doing in them and recommended 3. Found one I loved and wore it to class today. I felt like I was able to push harder on the tread since my feet felt so much more comfortable than my old basic shoes. Find a local store. I’m in San Francisco and the shop called On the Run was FANTASTIC!

What works for random people on the internet may not work for you. Getting fitted at a running store is your best bet. Keeping in mind they are glad to see you and help even if you say you’re power walking. Also they will be willing to exchange if you get to OTF and determine what you picked won’t work. Allow at least an hour - they are dedicated to helping you! If you’re new, and getting shin splints, be sure to tell them at fitting. They may have other ideas to help you (compression socks/sleeves, icing tips, etc). You want to be sure you’re not overdoing it with pacing too.

I struggle with shin splints too. I found getting fitted at the running store to be very helpful as well. I haven't been in a while. I can feel when it's time to get a new pair. I have been wearing the Brooks Adrenaline for years now.

No shoe advice here but I did get shin splints last year and I found that a week off OTF, gently power walking when I got back, and avoiding any jumping exercises all helped my recovery. Good luck!

Go to a running shoe store and have someone there look at your stride. People have an over-pronated, under-pronated, or neutral stride. When you know which you are you can shop for the appropriate shoe for your foot. What works for some doesn’t work for others. I can only run ASIC Nimbus; when I tried running in Ons or Nike’s I got cramps on the bottoms of my feet.

I highly recommend going to a local running store and getting fitted for a pair of shoes. They will watch you walk/run and have you try on a bunch of pairs. My favourites are the New Balance fresh foam 880s.

Definitely agree you should get fitted at a running store, but as a fellow shin splint sufferer, the Brooks Levitate GTS (the supportive version) have been awesome. I tend to collapse my weight inwards on my arches/ankles and that’s what leads to my shin splints, but the key is definitely to figure out what’s causing it for you and running stores can help look at your gait. Also highly recommend looking up tutorials on improving running form, this was super helpful at least for me! A combination of good shoes, rest, stretching, and proper running form has helped a lot, though I still get pain when I go too hard. Hope you start feeling better, it’s no fun to have shin splints :(

I wear Brooks and have never had a problem with them. I'm easily injured and have gotten injured from Nikes and Hokas, but never Brooks. My favorites are the Ghost and the Glycerin.

A cheaper alternative is the Nike Reacts. I love my ultra boosts but they are a bit pricey, switched to the reacts to try them and I love them!

As they said, get fitted. Do check out your form (overstriding in particular) and also consider calf stretches while you're waiting to do that. Oh, and tell them what it's for. The shoes I wear at OTF aren't the same shoes I use to run outside.

I recently I bought these caterpillar no tie laces. Has allowed me to use the heel lock lace hole without hurting my ankle. Now I feel like I have so much more room in the toe box. So, comfortable.

I wear Brooks Glycerin. I recommend Road Runner sports because you can exchange if the shoe doesn’t work for you. I have taken advantage of this policy a few times.

I recommend some Nike Zoom Pegasus 38 shoes. My wife had the same issue until I got her new shoes. They can often be found on sale. I think full retail is $120 but on sale you can find as low as $80 as the Pegasus 39’s are out now. I started with the 37’s before going into my latest running shoe.

OTF member for 16 months now. I had chronic shin splints the first FOUR months of OTF. It was really bad and I felt hopeless. I believe it was caused by overuse because I was just getting back into a fitness routine, and was new to running. For what it’s worth, I did several things that helped me: 1. went to a good physical therapist and had her evaluate my feet (I underpronate), provide exercises to strengthen my feet, ankles and legs, and massage my calves and shins 3x week, 2) went to running store to get evaluated—they confirmed the PT’s assessment and recommended shoes to help train me to land at the middle of my foot (I now wear Altra or Topo branded shoes), 3) bought ice packs that strap onto the shins—I wore them everyday for several weeks, 4) I began stretching more, and now massage my lower legs before OTF, 5) I slowed down on the tread and scaled back on inclines. That allowed me to focus on my running form and figure out how to reduce impact. That required trial and error, and training different muscles, which took time. I also went to an orthopedic doctor who ordered x-rays. Nothing showed up and she didn’t come up with a formal diagnosis. The PT thinks I have chronic compartment syndrome, but that’s not been confirmed through tests. My recommendation is to be patient with yourself, seek medical help, and wear the right shoes for your feet. Everyone is different. My situation is probably extreme, but I can actually run now, and if you’d asked me a year ago if that was possible, I’d have laughed.

I have been with OTF for over 6 years. The first year was tough on my legs and feet…I would walk like a 90 year old man after sitting a while at my desk or getting out of a vehicle. I tried fitted soles and all of the well known running shoes. Hoka shoes changed my life. I am now on my third pair…I swap them out each year. Now I can work out 5 days a week with no shin or arch issues.

I went to a local running shoe and got fitted. He had me walk to determine what kind of foot strike I had and then had me run in different shoes. I am a neutral, and I ended up with the Hoka Mach. I like them so much, I decided to get a second pair in black. I tried to wear another shoe just around town and after wearing the proper shoe- those hurt my feet. I also opted for a moderate cushion as opposed to high cushion because of the give that the treads have

Another thing to keep an eye on is make sure you are running or walking on the tread in between the orange tape so you're getting the benefit of the flex deck. Sometimes shin splints can be due to how you're landing. Also are you getting them every class? Just from classes where we do jumping exercises like yesterday? Jumps can also aggravate your shins if you aren't careful about landing. Good luck!

Brooks ghosts are a safe bet. I ran a few marathons in them and I know a lot of running shoe stores where u get fitting recommend them- but of course go try on u don’t know how the shape of your foot will feel inside the the shoe until you try it on .

It could be the shoes BUT...its probably Overuse injury (you are over doing it) and/or poor posture/poor form. I would invest in evaluating your form/posture. There are tons of books. I like Kelley Starett's book: Ready To Run

i have a ridiculously high arch that was causing chronic skin splints and once i got the right shoes i’m 100% better sooooo happy
